An excellent read for those interested in naval warfare is Baron von Mullenheim Reckbergs "Battleship Bismarck". He was the rear fire control director for either Caesar or Dora turret,one of the big 15 inch turrets. Adelbert Schneider was the commanding officer of all fire control. Von Reckberg speaks at length how accurate Bismarcks fire was. What was heart felt was after Bismarck sank the Hood and POW retreated that while they were elated to achieve such a victory over a legendary ship,remorse soon set in as they realized with the explosion and breaking in two,there couldn't have been many survivors. All seamen consider this anytime any ships sink. There will be men/boys trapped below decks when the ship capsizes.
Remarkable footage. I wonder if the film maker had any idea history they were recording. A great loss of life on both sides, but brave men all of them.

Gotta hv lots of guts to be there to record it as it happens amidst all the chaos of the battles! with bullets wizzing inches from their heads with rockets, shells, bombs n what not exploding all around but still! these guys in there somewhere with their cameras!! I dont know about u guys..but im sure i dont hv dat kind of guts! They say dat diz kind of people are very rare n a bit crazy adreanline junkies too! Honestly, these guys are the bravest of the bravest of them all! These camera guys as u mention, men or women deserved lots of respects and the highest medals for their hard work. WAR IS HELL!! And not just soldiers,many of these brave camera guys/ladies died and injured on the battlefield too... My condolences,pray and respects to all war correspondents and soldiers of every war known in history and their loving families who died or injured in their line of duty.. I do have to say, not to be beligerent, those aircrews didn't set out in life to murder civilians. I'm sure they were convicted for it the rest of their lives. God, I get absolute chills looking at these videos and then watching videos of it in diving adventures in the Pacific ocean modern day. A ww2 legend that sailed with one of the strongest European ships ever, now a passive behemoth. It is like a Grandma telling the stories of her greatest feats in life, ready to tell you a tale of what she once accomplished
A very interesting film I relate to the Prinz Eugan as my father was on the old light cruiser HMS Diomede he told me that the captain told the crew after the Bismarck was sunk that they were tasked to find and sink her. The crew realised that they were no match but still tried to locate her. Luckily for my dad and me Diomede did not find her as most probably I would not be adding this comment. As mentioned she was a target for atom bomb tests by the Americans and can be seen upside down in Kwajalein atol as a scuba diver it would interesting to dive the wreck.
There are a couple of flashes at 6:49 after the Hood exploded, it could be the two forward turrets firing the last salvo as she was broken and sinking. Survivors have confirmed this. If that what it is, it is a incredible scene to capture. Sobering.
Pretty sure that is Prince of Wales firing a full broadside: two clues, 1. “Queen Ann’s Mansion” type superstructure is visible if you look close 2. If you look to the right of that ship, you’ll a massive smoke cloud, I think that’s (or was before kaboom) Hood
@@geoffbarney5914 If that is "(or was before kaboom) Hood", the great smoke cloud would be from the great fire aboard Hood caused by the hits from Prinz Eugen.
Yeah looks to me like the Prince of Wales getting straddled by a lot of German salvos (white spray towers on either side), and then firing one or two turrets back at 'em. Certainly not Hood, which is gone.

Upon sighting his enemy, Admiral Holland closed the range towards the German ships. This was an error since it invited plunging shellfire from Prinz Eugen which had shorter range than Bismarck. As a result Prinz Eugen hit the Hood early in the engagement causing a massive fire which spread rapidly amidships. In one account I read it was described as an "amazing conflagration like the setting sun aboard ship." I imagine that this fire has been censored from the reel.
I find these two ships pre-eminent in naval architecture. Their lines were superb. I notice that the normal naval salute is the order of the day as opposed to the Nazi salute.
The Prinz Eugen was deemed to complicated for allied sailors to operate, so a crew was formed from German sailors in the POW camps to sail her to the atom bomb test at Bikini...
Nonsense. Just compare Prinz Eugen to any of the later US heavy cruisers. Even some of the improved British Counties, although 4,000 tons less in displacement, were likely to have proved her equal.

9:12 Could it really be THAT hot so close to GREENLAND soon before or after 24th May 1941? They are not far away from the geographic area where icebergs start their journey from. Greenlanders have difficult, harsh lives due to very arctic climate. Also, about 5:43 that was astonishingly poor performance from the gunners of HMS Hood or HMS Prince of Wales. With accuracy like that, they were lucky to cause some damage on Bismarck.
@Jonah Whale And your astonishingly poor comment seems to show a lack of understanding film cameras in 1941 were way bigger, heavier and more cumbersome than smartphones of today so he almost certainly did not carry it on him all the time and he likely sometimes fumbled while getting it ready. Therefore how can you be so sure it was the first shot?
@Jonah Whale Some of those shots were still stunningly inaccurate if you ask me. Someone told me somewhere else that Princes guns were malfunctioning so bad they had to retreat from battle. It may have something to do with the inaccuracy. Still in spite of everything, it was good enough work from the gunners because Bismarck was damaged so bad they started leaking oil and taking in seawater so they had to abandon their original mission and start trying to make a run for Brest.....which as we know failed.
@Jonah Whale It could well be that even naturally, British gunners did not have range and accuracy measurements equipment better than that (in that case I understand your view and I may have not been correct). All I know is Germans had them pretty good. Another thing that almost flabbergasts me is that the German sailors felt like not needing their shirts....and I am almost convinced that was the end of May 1941 near GREENLAND. That place is so cold and desolate you don't want to live there unless some pandemic, such as coronavirus makes you change your mind. Oh well, maybe even that land sometimes has a hot day or two.
Bismarck was scuttled by her own crew to not give England the self satisfaction of destroying her.It probably would have gone down eventually but the crew gave it the " coup de grace. "

@shaun king - The fact that the Bismarck crew scuttled their ship has been confirmed several times by Cameron's underwater inspections...Not a trace of doubt about it...the Bismarck was unsinkable...the Brits couldn't just send her down in spite of the many torpedoes launched against her and the terrible gunfire from all the big RN ships...the Bismarck men didn't want the enemy to capture such a magnificent piece of naval engineering and they scuttled her themselves. Shame on the RN. !

The Prinz - as well as all of her sister ships - could easily reach 34 knots....the same goes for the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, in spite of their 32.000 tons...!
You can see why the RN targeted Bismarck’s superstructure, there is so much of it! Also examination of the wreck shows they took out each of the gun positions with aimed shots.
Pedro Lista Carey it had a lot of smaller guns as well, and those who have surveyed the wreck report exactly what I have said, you have to presume that they would target the larger guns first so whether or not the main turrets fell off in the sinking is irrelevant to their having been targeted!

You aim to them, all right...but you can miss the shots by inches, you know...so the heavy turrets fell off by their own weight when the ship capsized. Now, that having been said, let's agree on one final conclusion: it wasn't exactly a fair battle... a lonely ship (and crippled, as it couldn't move) against a massive fleet...That's why the world remembers the Bismarck but no one remembers those who tried to sink her and didn't succeed.
Pedro Lista Carey a relative of mine was lost on Good Hope (Coronel), that was not a ‘fair fight’. The purpose of having a navy is to defeat the opposition, at Coronel the German fleet did just that, and nobody is complaining. What those who surveyed the wreck of Bismarck say is that the secondary armament was struck by what seem to be aimed shots, you would have to assume that the gunners on the British ships at least tried to do that to the main armament. Good Hope caught fire and blew up before she was able to get close enough to use the bulk of her guns, unlike Bismarck there were no survivors (she was a big ship), Together with Monmouth it is reckoned about 1700 were lost (Monmouth sank with her entire complement as well)
@@pcka12 - Horrible loss of lives, but not long after that near the Falklands a larger and stronger Brit fleet sank most of the German warships, with an even higher loss of lives.
German Surface Vessels were beautiful - but all that Steel, Equipment, and Manpower would have made instead more than enough U-Boats to totally blockade England, prevent the D-Day build-up, and destroy all the Russian Material Convoys - perhaps winning the War for Germany.
If you are speaking about mass production, germany never laid worth in that like the Americans did. They researched such modern vehicles/models, that mass production (at least for germany) simply wasnt possible. Thats what Ive been told.
That would assume the UK would carry on in the same vein. In reality without German surface forces the UK would have also be able to deploy men and resources to other tasks, like escorts, escort carriers or long range aircraft. Either way the U-Boats get defeated in 43. Once the Allies closed the air gap and finally had sufficient escorts the U boats didn't stand a chance.
A remarkably lucky ship considering the fate of Kriegsmarine surface vessels. Fated to be turned into radioactive scrap. After Hood blew up, it almost seemed that Bismark paused in awe of what occured, before resuming fire on KGV. The Germans did build beautiful ships, combining form and function. The lucky Swordfish hit on the rudder of Bismark, prevented the sortie from being one of the most successful in naval warfare. Gott mit Uns was not apparent for Bismark's crew.
Both ships were remarkable and among the best of their types ever built. However, despite the success of sinking the Hood, the outcome proofed they were not the ships the Germans actually had needed to bring down Britain before the Americans got involved. With the money, material and staff needed to build, maintain and operate these ships, Germany easily could have had at least another 100 submarines. And that would have made a real difference, in 1941. But truely they were beautiful ships and it's easy to understand why the German admirality, officers coming from the Emperial Navy of WW1, fell for these ships. In the end, it was just Lütjens' senseless radio chatter, which gave up his position to the British. The rest is history.

Die Mission stand unter viel Druck Erfolge zu operieren und da Bismarck sowieso Brest anlaufen wollte, dachte man es wäre besser - wenn die Schiffe ja schon durchgebrochen sind, dass Prinz Eugen die Mission alleine weiterführen sollte. Ausserdem war Lütjens klar, dass die Engländer sich auf Bismarck konzentrieren würden. Im Nachhinein kann man sagen, dass es wohl ein Fehler war. Aber den Torpedotreffer am Ruder - soweit ich weiß das einzige Mal, dass ein Schlachtschiff dort getroffen wurde - konnte da auch niemand vorhersehen.

Die Briten hätten sich bei erneuten Aufeinandertreffen auf Bismarck konzentriert, weil die ihnen hat richtig Schaden zufügen können, die 20.3cm des hätten zwar auch Schaden verursacht, aber nichts Wichtiges zerstören können, die Brücke mal ausgenommen... Und nachdem Bismarck kampfunfähig gemacht worden ist, hätten man den Prinzen zu Klump geschossen.... 😳😕

Honest question, is this actual footage of the explosion itself which sunk the Hood? Not trying to be disrespectful at all but to me it doesn’t seem as she was filmed being hit. It looks as if those are the turrets firing or am I confusing that footage? The initial hit that caused a reactive explosion was thought to have been in the rear of the ship setting off the battery and releasing a huge fire wall up the main corridor of the center of the ship to the front battery causing another explosion clearly that brought her down. Not sure if the videos I’ve already watched have misinformed me either. I haven’t been able to find that exact footage either unless it’s been removed from the internet out of respect to those noble men aboard her when she met her demise.
Grimstad fjord is where the RAF recon Spitfire spotted them. Flying Officer Suckling flew back to England, ran out of gas near his home town, woke up a friend who had a car and they drove the film into London to the Admiralty, if I recall. Good story in "Pursuit", by Ludovic Kennedy.

Ganz nüchtern betrachtet ,hatte die Hood keine Chance gegen die Bismarck zu bestehen.Dazu war der Kasten zu alt und zu schlecht gebaut/gepanzert. Das traf auf die britischen Schlachtschiffe allgemein zu,bei diesen wurde der Wert auf eine starke Hauptartillerie gelegt.Die Briten waren der Meinung,das reicht aus,wer sollte mit ihnen denn gross um die Seeherrschaft ringen wollen? Und grosse,dicke Kanonrohre machten nunmal wesentlich mehr Eindruck als eine gute,starke Panzerung,die man zudem noch nicht mal sehen konnte ,bzw.damit Eindruck schinden.
Sorry, aber das ist aus mehreren Gründen ...öhm... ich nenne es mal "Unsinn". Zunächst: Das hier sind zwei Schlachtschiffe gegen eines. Ein Schwerer Kreuzer kann mit seinen Kanönchen eigentlich nichts gegen Hood oder Prince of Wales ausrichten. Die Hood hatte vergleichbare Artillerie wie die Bismarck und vergleichbare Geschwindigkeit, dabei aber immernoch ein moderneres Panzerungsschema als die Bismarck (Stichwort: alles-oder-nichts-Schema); faktisch war das gesamte Panzerungs- und Bewaffnungsschema der Bismarck nicht auf dem Stand der Zeit, was an der großen Lücke der Schiffsbauerfahrung deutscher Werften nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg lag (besonders deutlich zu sehen bei der "Graf Zeppelin"). Jedenfalls war deswegen die Bismarck viel größer als vergleichbare Schiffe anderer Nationen, auch der Italiener, eben weil sie nicht so effizient geplant war. Schau Dir alleine mal die Türme an, die viel größer sind als bei der Hood, damit auch viel mehr wiegen, aber trotzdem völlig vergleichbare Kanonen tragen. Der Treffer auf der Hood kann ähnlich wie der Torpedotreffer gegen die Bismarck als 1:1000 Glückstreffer gesehen werden, erwartbar war das nicht. Allerdings auch hier nicht ganz vergleichbar, denn dass nicht ein einziger Swordfish-Torpedobomber abgeschossen werden konnte lag u.a. am ineffizienten Flak-Layout der Bismarck, und dass der Treffer überhaupt das Schiff unsteuerbar machte, wäre bei einem britischen Schiff sehr wahrscheinlich nicht passiert - denn die hatten vier individuell schaltbare Schrauben, nicht drei wie die Bismarck (von denen dann nur zwei seitlich des Ruders lagen und jeweils nicht genug Kraft hatten um das Schiff per Schraubenkraft zu steuern). Unabhängig davon wurde die Bismarck dann am Ende von einem einzigen, 15 Jahre älteren Schlachtschiff kampfunfähig geschossen, der HMS Rodney (als die Prince of Wales hinzukam waren bereits drei der vier Türme der Bismarck, sowie die Hauptfeuerleitanlage außer Gefecht), und die Bismarck landete hier nichtmal einen einzigen Treffer. Man muss halt auch einfach sagen: irgendwie logisch, die Briten hatten sehr viel mehr Erfahrung im Kriegsschiffbau, sehr viel mehr Erfahrung bzgl.Seekriegstaktik, und dazu noch sehr erfahrene und fähige Kommandanten.

Das einzige , was zutrifft, ist der der saublöde Zufallstreffer in die Ruderanlage der Bismarck , als sie im Kurswechsel war.Und das die Fla- Granaten durch die Segeltuchbespannung der Swordfishs durchging ohne Schaden anzurichten. Was die Konstruktion der Bismarck anging, so war sie um Längen den britischen Schiffen, selbst sogar den neuen modernen Schlachtschiffe der King George V- Klasse überlegen. Die Hood war Baujahr 1916 und hatte von Anfang keine Chance gegen ein modernes Schlachtschiff zu bestehen, da sie vollkommen übetaltert war und keinen ausreichenden Panzerschutz besass um in einem Gefecht mit modernen Schiffen zu überleben. Die Prince of Wales traf zusammen mit der Hood auf die Bismarck und eröffnete dad Feuer auf den vorne fahrenden Prinzen,da die beiden Schiffe sich sehr ähnlich sahen. Aufgrund der kleinetenEinschlgssäulen der Artillerie bemerkten die Briten den Fehler und korrigierten ihre Zielansprache. Nach der vierten Salve der Bismarck flog die Hood in die Luft. Und die Prince of Wales wurde zisammengeschossen und entkam durch künstlichen Nebel der Bismarck. Aber nur, weil Lütjens den Befehl hatte, dem Kampf mit schweren Einheiten des Gegners zu vermeidenSonst wäre die Prince of Wales der Hood auf den Meeresboden gefolgt. Nicht nachzuvollziehen, da die 35,6cm komplett ausgefallen waren. Bevor du solchen Müll schreibst, solltest du dich richtig informieren. Ansonsten machst du dich, wie geschehen . zum Witzbold.Gelinde ausgedrückt.

Da ist Sachlichkeit natürlich vergeblich; ich kann Sie nur ermuntern, neutralen Abstand zu wahren und sich mal neutrale Quellen zu suchen - ich habe nämlch keine Ahnung wieso Sie unbedingt daran glauben wollen dass die Bismarck so überlegen gewesen sei. Vergelichen Sie einfach mal die Rahmendaten und fragen sich: wieso hat die Bismarck nicht mehr Panzerung, keine größeren Geschützem sogar nur 8 davon, ist nicht schneller, aber ist trotzdem immens viel größer als z.B. die Littorio? Übrigens haben die Dinge, die sie schreiben (falsches Ziel, etc.) nichts mit dem zu tun, was ich schrieb.
@@Rauschgenerator Nur weil ich mich wesentlich besser auskenne wie sie ,bin ich noch lange kein Verehrer des dritten Reiches. Die Bismarck war seinerzeit das mächtigste Schlachtschiff mit einer sehr starken Panzerung. Die italienischen Schiffe hatten eine schwächere Panzerung,da sie drei Drillingstürme als Hauptgewaffnung hatten. Sie sollten sich wirklich neutrale Informationsquellen zum informieren besorgen,da mir ihre Informationen als ,sagen wir mal,nicht gerade deutschfreundlich,vorkommen. Meine Informationsquellen sind von ausländischen Quellen.Nur mal zur Info.Weil von deutscher Seite wird alles verteufelt,was deutsch ist. Im übrigen gibt es ein Buch und Filmaufnahmen,die Tauchfahrten zum Wrack der Bismarck zeigen.Und dort wurde festgestellt,dass die Panzerung der Bismarck trotz der vielen tausend Granaten,die auf sie abgefeuert wurden,die lebenswichtigen Teile des Schiffes gut geschützt haben. Auch wurden keine Torpedotreffer der Briten festgestellt,die die Bismarck versenkt haben könnten. Und sie haben sehr wohl die Artillerie der beiden Gegner erwähnt.Die Bismarck konnte nur deswegen zusammengeschossen werden,da sie ,bedingt durch den Torpedotreffer,immer nur quasi im Kreis fahren konnte. Und gegen drei oder vier Schlachtschiffe,die ihre schwere Artillerie gezielt auf den Gegner wirken lassen könnten,wäre sogar die japanische Yamato relativ chancenlos gewesen. Die Bismarck wurde mit mehrfach elektrisch gehärteten Stahlplatten gebaut,eine absolute Neuheit damals. Wenn die Bismarck so schlecht konstruiert und gebaut worden wäre,wie sie das Schiff darstellen,so hätte Churchill nicht alles daran gesetzt,die Tirpitz zu versenken. Wegen diesem einen deutschem Schlachschiff waren immer drei,vier britischeSchlachtschiffe im Nordmeer unterwegs. Und mal ehrlich: Ob 38cm oder 40,6cm,das ist relativ gleich von der Wirkung im Ziel. Nur waren die deutschen 38cm den britischen 40,6 cm überlegen,da sie in der Zeit,die die Briten für eine Salve der 40,6cm abzufeuern brauchten,zwei Salven der 38cm abfeuern konnten. Das Panzerungsschema der Bismarck war veraltet und stammt aus einer Zeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg; die Briten hatten dieses zu Zeiten des 1.WK aufgegeben und Rumpfpanzerung zugunsten der Panzerung der Aufbauten und Türme minimiert, da es nicht so wichtig ist ob Schotten unter Wasser stehen, wie wenn Brücke oder Türme zerstört werden. Dass die Bismarck sehr schnell erhebliche Zerstörungen der Aufbauten erlitt und sehr schnell wehrlos war findet seinen Grund hierin. 2. Daher nochmal: nein, es war ein einzelnes Schiff, die HMS Rodney, die im Alleingang die Bismarck wehrlos schoss; einer der ersten Treffer zerstörte bereits die Hauptfeuerleitanlage, die King George V. kam erst später hinzu und steuerlos zu sein führt nicht dazu, dass man wehrlos ist, erst recht nicht dazu dass man keine Treffer setzen kann. Speziell hinsichtlich Ihrer eigenen Argumentation nach, wonach die Geschütze der Bismarck ja so viel besser waren... 3. Die Bismarck war ein ineffizient geplantes und gebautes Schlachtschiff. Durch Verzicht auf Multifunktionsartillerie mussten Sekundärbewaffnung und schwere Flak extra ausgeführt werden, was nichts als Gewicht und Platz kostete; die Anordnunge der Ladevorrichtungen in den Kanonen in den Türmen verlangte auch größere Türme, die damit ebenfalls schwerer waren als bei anderen Schiffen. Es gab weitere ineffiziente Lösungen, die alle dazu beitrugen, dass die Bismarck größer und schwerer war als vergleichbare Schiffe. 4. Die italienischen Schiffe waren besser gepanzert als die Bismarck; die Littorio hatte eine durchgängig dickere Gürtelpanzerung, war schneller und hatte darüberhinaus eine Kanone mehr. Es ist ganz logisch einfach festzustellen dass hier die größere Erfahrung im Kriegsschiffbau, den die Italiener hatten, sich natürlich auch auswirkt. 5. Der Rumpf der Bismarck liegt metertief im Schlick begraben, eine Aussage über Treffer am Rumpf ist abschließend gar nicht möglich; aufgrund der Tatsache dass sie sank und aufgrund eines Treffers den halben Atlantik hindurch eine Ölspur gezogen hatte ist Ihre Behauptung, es hätte gar keine Treffer gegeben schlicht abenteuerlich. 6. Die Tirpitz war nicht eine Gefahr weil sie die Tirpitz war, sondern weil an dieser wichtigen Stelle überhaupt ein Schlachtschiff lag. Auch wenn das nur eine Scharnhorst gewesen wäre, hätte man die dreifache Übermacht parat gehalten (und hatte es auch als die Scharnhorst und Gneisenau dort lagen!), es ging schließlich darum die Konvois dort abzusichern, da ist völlig egal ob da ein größeres oder kleineres Schlachtschiff liegt. Ich sehe durchaus das Problem, dass Sie sich nicht mit kritischen Quellen auseinandersetzen und Dinge, die Ihrer Meinung zuwiderlaufen direkt als "deutschfeindlich" bewerten. Ich habe die Bismarck auch nicht als schlecht bezeichnet, wie Sie es behaupten, sondern als teilweise veraltet und ineffizient. Und das habe ich soweit belegt.
With small portable 16 mm or 8 mm film cameras you could not make any sound recordings at the time. They usually ran with spring gear motors and not yet electrically. Only in the early 1950s was this possible .... there was the Prince Eugen but already 5 years on the bottom of the Kwajalein Atoll.
Both of these ships were beautifully designed and its great to see some footage of them at sea.

Adelbert Schneider was the commanding officer of all fire control.
Von Reckberg speaks at length how accurate Bismarcks fire was.
What was heart felt was after Bismarck sank the Hood and POW retreated that while they were elated to achieve such a victory over a legendary ship,remorse soon set in as they realized with the explosion and breaking in two,there couldn't have been many survivors.
All seamen consider this anytime any ships sink.
There will be men/boys trapped below decks when the ship capsizes.

God, I get absolute chills looking at these videos and then watching videos of it in diving adventures in the Pacific ocean modern day. A ww2 legend that sailed with one of the strongest European ships ever, now a passive behemoth. It is like a Grandma telling the stories of her greatest feats in life, ready to tell you a tale of what she once accomplished

A very interesting film I relate to the Prinz Eugan as my father was on the old light cruiser HMS Diomede he told me that the captain told the crew after the Bismarck was sunk that they were tasked to find and sink her. The crew realised that they were no match but still tried to locate her. Luckily for my dad and me Diomede did not find her as most probably I would not be adding this comment. As mentioned she was a target for atom bomb tests by the Americans and can be seen upside down in Kwajalein atol as a scuba diver it would interesting to dive the wreck.
The battle of denmark strait of Prinz eugen with Bismark is one of the great german historical memory.

There are a couple of flashes at 6:49 after the Hood exploded, it could be the two forward turrets firing the last salvo as she was broken and sinking. Survivors have confirmed this. If that what it is, it is a incredible scene to capture. Sobering.

@@geoffbarney5914 If that is "(or was before kaboom) Hood", the great smoke cloud would be from the great fire aboard Hood caused by the hits from Prinz Eugen.
Yeah looks to me like the Prince of Wales getting straddled by a lot of German salvos (white spray towers on either side), and then firing one or two turrets back at 'em. Certainly not Hood, which is gone.

Upon sighting his enemy, Admiral Holland closed the range towards the German ships. This was an error since it invited plunging shellfire from Prinz Eugen which had shorter range than Bismarck. As a result Prinz Eugen hit the Hood early in the engagement causing a massive fire which spread rapidly amidships. In one account I read it was described as an "amazing conflagration like the setting sun aboard ship." I imagine that this fire has been censored from the reel.
I highly doubt the film was censored unless there were PC Karen’s back then.
it was standard practise for the royal navy to close-in at any surface engagements including capital ships.

I find these two ships pre-eminent in naval architecture. Their lines were superb. I notice that the normal naval salute is the order of the day as opposed to the Nazi salute.
The DKM and the NS Party admired and respected, and even loved each other with the same mutual and reciprocated enthusiasm!

The Prinz Eugen was deemed to complicated for allied sailors to operate, so a crew was formed from German sailors in the POW camps to sail her to the atom bomb test at Bikini...
Nonsense. Just compare Prinz Eugen to any of the later US heavy cruisers. Even some of the improved British Counties, although 4,000 tons less in displacement, were likely to have proved her equal.

9:12 Could it really be THAT hot so close to GREENLAND soon before or after 24th May 1941? They are not far away from the geographic area where icebergs start their journey from. Greenlanders have difficult, harsh lives due to very arctic climate. Also, about 5:43 that was astonishingly poor performance from the gunners of HMS Hood or HMS Prince of Wales. With accuracy like that, they were lucky to cause some damage on Bismarck.

@Jonah Whale And your astonishingly poor comment seems to show a lack of understanding film cameras in 1941 were way bigger, heavier and more cumbersome than smartphones of today so he almost certainly did not carry it on him all the time and he likely sometimes fumbled while getting it ready. Therefore how can you be so sure it was the first shot?
@Jonah Whale Some of those shots were still stunningly inaccurate if you ask me. Someone told me somewhere else that Princes guns were malfunctioning so bad they had to retreat from battle. It may have something to do with the inaccuracy. Still in spite of everything, it was good enough work from the gunners because Bismarck was damaged so bad they started leaking oil and taking in seawater so they had to abandon their original mission and start trying to make a run for Brest.....which as we know failed.
@Jonah Whale It could well be that even naturally, British gunners did not have range and accuracy measurements equipment better than that (in that case I understand your view and I may have not been correct). All I know is Germans had them pretty good. Another thing that almost flabbergasts me is that the German sailors felt like not needing their shirts....and I am almost convinced that was the end of May 1941 near GREENLAND. That place is so cold and desolate you don't want to live there unless some pandemic, such as coronavirus makes you change your mind. Oh well, maybe even that land sometimes has a hot day or two.

@shaun king - The fact that the Bismarck crew scuttled their ship has been confirmed several times by Cameron's underwater inspections...Not a trace of doubt about it...the Bismarck was unsinkable...the Brits couldn't just send her down in spite of the many torpedoes launched against her and the terrible gunfire from all the big RN ships...the Bismarck men didn't want the enemy to capture such a magnificent piece of naval engineering and they scuttled her themselves. Shame on the RN. !

Also examination of the wreck shows they took out each of the gun positions with aimed shots.
No, they didn't...the main guns turrets got disengaged from their mountings when the ship rolled over as it went down...
Pedro Lista Carey it had a lot of smaller guns as well, and those who have surveyed the wreck report exactly what I have said, you have to presume that they would target the larger guns first so whether or not the main turrets fell off in the sinking is irrelevant to their having been targeted!

Pedro Lista Carey a relative of mine was lost on Good Hope (Coronel), that was not a ‘fair fight’.
The purpose of having a navy is to defeat the opposition, at Coronel the German fleet did just that, and nobody is complaining.
What those who surveyed the wreck of Bismarck say is that the secondary armament was struck by what seem to be aimed shots, you would have to assume that the gunners on the British ships at least tried to do that to the main armament.
Good Hope caught fire and blew up before she was able to get close enough to use the bulk of her guns, unlike Bismarck there were no survivors (she was a big ship), Together with Monmouth it is reckoned about 1700 were lost (Monmouth sank with her entire complement as well)

German Surface Vessels were beautiful - but all that Steel, Equipment, and Manpower would have made instead more than enough U-Boats to totally blockade England, prevent the D-Day build-up, and destroy all the Russian Material Convoys - perhaps winning the War for Germany.
If you are speaking about mass production, germany never laid worth in that like the Americans did. They researched such modern vehicles/models, that mass production (at least for germany) simply wasnt possible. Thats what Ive been told.
That would assume the UK would carry on in the same vein. In reality without German surface forces the UK would have also be able to deploy men and resources to other tasks, like escorts, escort carriers or long range aircraft. Either way the U-Boats get defeated in 43. Once the Allies closed the air gap and finally had sufficient escorts the U boats didn't stand a chance.
German would not win the war anyway because his territory sooner or later would receive an atomic atack...
Then the first nuke would have hit Berlin and not Hiroshima. Winning this war was not possible.
A remarkably lucky ship considering the fate of Kriegsmarine surface vessels. Fated to be turned into radioactive scrap. After Hood blew up, it almost seemed that Bismark paused in awe of what occured, before resuming fire on KGV. The Germans did build beautiful ships, combining form and function. The lucky Swordfish hit on the rudder of Bismark, prevented the sortie from being one of the most successful in naval warfare. Gott mit Uns was not apparent for Bismark's crew.

Both ships were remarkable and among the best of their types ever built. However, despite the success of sinking the Hood, the outcome proofed they were not the ships the Germans actually had needed to bring down Britain before the Americans got involved. With the money, material and staff needed to build, maintain and operate these ships, Germany easily could have had at least another 100 submarines. And that would have made a real difference, in 1941. But truely they were beautiful ships and it's easy to understand why the German admirality, officers coming from the Emperial Navy of WW1, fell for these ships. In the end, it was just Lütjens' senseless radio chatter, which gave up his position to the British. The rest is history.

weil nach der Beschädigung der Bismarck entschieden wurde, dass das Schiff nach St. Nazaire zur Reparatur sollte, während Prinz Eugen die Mission weiterführen sollte.

Die Mission stand unter viel Druck Erfolge zu operieren und da Bismarck sowieso Brest anlaufen wollte, dachte man es wäre besser - wenn die Schiffe ja schon durchgebrochen sind, dass Prinz Eugen die Mission alleine weiterführen sollte. Ausserdem war Lütjens klar, dass die Engländer sich auf Bismarck konzentrieren würden. Im Nachhinein kann man sagen, dass es wohl ein Fehler war. Aber den Torpedotreffer am Ruder - soweit ich weiß das einzige Mal, dass ein Schlachtschiff dort getroffen wurde - konnte da auch niemand vorhersehen.

5:43 Maybe i am wrong, but i think this is the Bismarck fireing at the Hood.
Honest question, is this actual footage of the explosion itself which sunk the Hood? Not trying to be disrespectful at all but to me it doesn’t seem as she was filmed being hit. It looks as if those are the turrets firing or am I confusing that footage? The initial hit that caused a reactive explosion was thought to have been in the rear of the ship setting off the battery and releasing a huge fire wall up the main corridor of the center of the ship to the front battery causing another explosion clearly that brought her down. Not sure if the videos I’ve already watched have misinformed me either. I haven’t been able to find that exact footage either unless it’s been removed from the internet out of respect to those noble men aboard her when she met her demise.

Grimstad fjord is where the RAF recon Spitfire spotted them. Flying Officer Suckling flew back to England, ran out of gas near his home town, woke up a friend who had a car and they drove the film into London to the Admiralty, if I recall. Good story in "Pursuit", by Ludovic Kennedy.

Le Rafale aujourd'hui est un très bel avion, seulement son but ultime est de lancer des missiles nucléaires vers un autre pays.
Dans certain commentaires l'admiration tend à effacer la mémoire de cette horrible histoire.

Ganz nüchtern betrachtet ,hatte die Hood keine Chance gegen die Bismarck zu bestehen.Dazu war der Kasten zu alt und zu schlecht gebaut/gepanzert.
Das traf auf die britischen Schlachtschiffe allgemein zu,bei diesen wurde der Wert auf eine starke Hauptartillerie gelegt.Die Briten waren der Meinung,das reicht aus,wer sollte mit ihnen denn gross um die Seeherrschaft ringen wollen?
Und grosse,dicke Kanonrohre machten nunmal wesentlich mehr Eindruck als eine gute,starke Panzerung,die man zudem noch nicht mal sehen konnte ,bzw.damit Eindruck schinden.
Sorry, aber das ist aus mehreren Gründen ...öhm... ich nenne es mal "Unsinn".
Zunächst: Das hier sind zwei Schlachtschiffe gegen eines. Ein Schwerer Kreuzer kann mit seinen Kanönchen eigentlich nichts gegen Hood oder Prince of Wales ausrichten.
Die Hood hatte vergleichbare Artillerie wie die Bismarck und vergleichbare Geschwindigkeit, dabei aber immernoch ein moderneres Panzerungsschema als die Bismarck (Stichwort: alles-oder-nichts-Schema); faktisch war das gesamte Panzerungs- und Bewaffnungsschema der Bismarck nicht auf dem Stand der Zeit, was an der großen Lücke der Schiffsbauerfahrung deutscher Werften nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg lag (besonders deutlich zu sehen bei der "Graf Zeppelin"). Jedenfalls war deswegen die Bismarck viel größer als vergleichbare Schiffe anderer Nationen, auch der Italiener, eben weil sie nicht so effizient geplant war. Schau Dir alleine mal die Türme an, die viel größer sind als bei der Hood, damit auch viel mehr wiegen, aber trotzdem völlig vergleichbare Kanonen tragen.
Der Treffer auf der Hood kann ähnlich wie der Torpedotreffer gegen die Bismarck als 1:1000 Glückstreffer gesehen werden, erwartbar war das nicht.
Allerdings auch hier nicht ganz vergleichbar, denn dass nicht ein einziger Swordfish-Torpedobomber abgeschossen werden konnte lag u.a. am ineffizienten Flak-Layout der Bismarck, und dass der Treffer überhaupt das Schiff unsteuerbar machte, wäre bei einem britischen Schiff sehr wahrscheinlich nicht passiert - denn die hatten vier individuell schaltbare Schrauben, nicht drei wie die Bismarck (von denen dann nur zwei seitlich des Ruders lagen und jeweils nicht genug Kraft hatten um das Schiff per Schraubenkraft zu steuern).
Unabhängig davon wurde die Bismarck dann am Ende von einem einzigen, 15 Jahre älteren Schlachtschiff kampfunfähig geschossen, der HMS Rodney (als die Prince of Wales hinzukam waren bereits drei der vier Türme der Bismarck, sowie die Hauptfeuerleitanlage außer Gefecht), und die Bismarck landete hier nichtmal einen einzigen Treffer.
Man muss halt auch einfach sagen: irgendwie logisch, die Briten hatten sehr viel mehr Erfahrung im Kriegsschiffbau, sehr viel mehr Erfahrung bzgl.Seekriegstaktik, und dazu noch sehr erfahrene und fähige Kommandanten.

Das einzige , was zutrifft, ist der der saublöde Zufallstreffer in die Ruderanlage der Bismarck , als sie im Kurswechsel war.Und das die Fla- Granaten durch die Segeltuchbespannung der Swordfishs durchging ohne Schaden anzurichten.
Was die Konstruktion der Bismarck anging, so war sie um Längen den britischen Schiffen, selbst sogar den neuen modernen Schlachtschiffe der King George V- Klasse überlegen.
Die Hood war Baujahr 1916 und hatte von Anfang keine Chance gegen ein modernes Schlachtschiff zu bestehen, da sie vollkommen übetaltert war und keinen ausreichenden Panzerschutz besass um in einem Gefecht mit modernen Schiffen zu überleben.
Die Prince of Wales traf zusammen mit der Hood auf die Bismarck und eröffnete dad Feuer auf den vorne fahrenden Prinzen,da die beiden Schiffe sich sehr ähnlich sahen.
Aufgrund der kleinetenEinschlgssäulen der Artillerie bemerkten die Briten den Fehler und korrigierten ihre Zielansprache.
Nach der vierten Salve der Bismarck flog die Hood in die Luft.
Und die Prince of Wales wurde zisammengeschossen und entkam durch künstlichen Nebel der Bismarck.
Aber nur, weil Lütjens den Befehl hatte, dem Kampf mit schweren Einheiten des Gegners zu vermeidenSonst wäre die Prince of Wales der Hood auf den Meeresboden gefolgt.
Nicht nachzuvollziehen, da die 35,6cm komplett ausgefallen waren.
Bevor du solchen Müll schreibst, solltest du dich richtig informieren.
Ansonsten machst du dich, wie geschehen . zum Witzbold.Gelinde ausgedrückt.

Da ist Sachlichkeit natürlich vergeblich; ich kann Sie nur ermuntern, neutralen Abstand zu wahren und sich mal neutrale Quellen zu suchen - ich habe nämlch keine Ahnung wieso Sie unbedingt daran glauben wollen dass die Bismarck so überlegen gewesen sei.
Vergelichen Sie einfach mal die Rahmendaten und fragen sich: wieso hat die Bismarck nicht mehr Panzerung, keine größeren Geschützem sogar nur 8 davon, ist nicht schneller, aber ist trotzdem immens viel größer als z.B. die Littorio?
Übrigens haben die Dinge, die sie schreiben (falsches Ziel, etc.) nichts mit dem zu tun, was ich schrieb.

Die Bismarck war seinerzeit das mächtigste Schlachtschiff mit einer sehr starken Panzerung.
Die italienischen Schiffe hatten eine schwächere Panzerung,da sie drei Drillingstürme als Hauptgewaffnung hatten.
Sie sollten sich wirklich neutrale Informationsquellen zum informieren besorgen,da mir ihre Informationen als ,sagen wir mal,nicht gerade deutschfreundlich,vorkommen.
Meine Informationsquellen sind von ausländischen Quellen.Nur mal zur Info.Weil von deutscher Seite wird alles verteufelt,was deutsch ist.
Im übrigen gibt es ein Buch und Filmaufnahmen,die Tauchfahrten zum Wrack der Bismarck zeigen.Und dort wurde festgestellt,dass die Panzerung der Bismarck trotz der vielen tausend Granaten,die auf sie abgefeuert wurden,die lebenswichtigen Teile des Schiffes gut geschützt haben.
Auch wurden keine Torpedotreffer der Briten festgestellt,die die Bismarck versenkt haben könnten.
Und sie haben sehr wohl die Artillerie der beiden Gegner erwähnt.Die Bismarck konnte nur deswegen zusammengeschossen werden,da sie ,bedingt durch den Torpedotreffer,immer nur quasi im Kreis fahren konnte.
Und gegen drei oder vier Schlachtschiffe,die ihre schwere Artillerie gezielt auf den Gegner wirken lassen könnten,wäre sogar die japanische Yamato relativ chancenlos gewesen.
Die Bismarck wurde mit mehrfach elektrisch gehärteten Stahlplatten gebaut,eine absolute Neuheit damals.
Wenn die Bismarck so schlecht konstruiert und gebaut worden wäre,wie sie das Schiff darstellen,so hätte Churchill nicht alles daran gesetzt,die Tirpitz zu versenken.
Wegen diesem einen deutschem Schlachschiff waren immer drei,vier britischeSchlachtschiffe im Nordmeer unterwegs.
Und mal ehrlich: Ob 38cm oder 40,6cm,das ist relativ gleich von der Wirkung im Ziel.
Nur waren die deutschen 38cm den britischen 40,6 cm überlegen,da sie in der Zeit,die die Briten für eine Salve der 40,6cm abzufeuern brauchten,zwei Salven der 38cm abfeuern konnten.
Wie schon erwähnt,SIE sollten sich genau informieren,bevor sie hier nur Spekulationen und britische Meinungen zum Thema" Schlachschiff Bismarck" versuchen unter die Leute zu bringen.

Es ist überdies völlig egal woher Informationen stammen, sie müssen nur faktisch überprüfbar sein und ein Satz wie "war das stärkste Schlachtschiff" ist weder objektiv bewertbar noch hat es irgendeinen historischen Wert.
Erstmal: für mich sind das damals einfach alles fremde Menschen, ob es Deutsche oder Briten waren. Ich kenne niemanden davon.
Dann mal zum Schiff selbst und ich würde Sie bitten endlich mal auf die Dinge einzugehen, die ich schrieb:
1. Das Panzerungsschema der Bismarck war veraltet und stammt aus einer Zeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg; die Briten hatten dieses zu Zeiten des 1.WK aufgegeben und Rumpfpanzerung zugunsten der Panzerung der Aufbauten und Türme minimiert, da es nicht so wichtig ist ob Schotten unter Wasser stehen, wie wenn Brücke oder Türme zerstört werden. Dass die Bismarck sehr schnell erhebliche Zerstörungen der Aufbauten erlitt und sehr schnell wehrlos war findet seinen Grund hierin.
2. Daher nochmal: nein, es war ein einzelnes Schiff, die HMS Rodney, die im Alleingang die Bismarck wehrlos schoss; einer der ersten Treffer zerstörte bereits die Hauptfeuerleitanlage, die King George V. kam erst später hinzu und steuerlos zu sein führt nicht dazu, dass man wehrlos ist, erst recht nicht dazu dass man keine Treffer setzen kann. Speziell hinsichtlich Ihrer eigenen Argumentation nach, wonach die Geschütze der Bismarck ja so viel besser waren...
3. Die Bismarck war ein ineffizient geplantes und gebautes Schlachtschiff. Durch Verzicht auf Multifunktionsartillerie mussten Sekundärbewaffnung und schwere Flak extra ausgeführt werden, was nichts als Gewicht und Platz kostete; die Anordnunge der Ladevorrichtungen in den Kanonen in den Türmen verlangte auch größere Türme, die damit ebenfalls schwerer waren als bei anderen Schiffen. Es gab weitere ineffiziente Lösungen, die alle dazu beitrugen, dass die Bismarck größer und schwerer war als vergleichbare Schiffe.
4. Die italienischen Schiffe waren besser gepanzert als die Bismarck; die Littorio hatte eine durchgängig dickere Gürtelpanzerung, war schneller und hatte darüberhinaus eine Kanone mehr. Es ist ganz logisch einfach festzustellen dass hier die größere Erfahrung im Kriegsschiffbau, den die Italiener hatten, sich natürlich auch auswirkt.
5. Der Rumpf der Bismarck liegt metertief im Schlick begraben, eine Aussage über Treffer am Rumpf ist abschließend gar nicht möglich; aufgrund der Tatsache dass sie sank und aufgrund eines Treffers den halben Atlantik hindurch eine Ölspur gezogen hatte ist Ihre Behauptung, es hätte gar keine Treffer gegeben schlicht abenteuerlich.
6. Die Tirpitz war nicht eine Gefahr weil sie die Tirpitz war, sondern weil an dieser wichtigen Stelle überhaupt ein Schlachtschiff lag. Auch wenn das nur eine Scharnhorst gewesen wäre, hätte man die dreifache Übermacht parat gehalten (und hatte es auch als die Scharnhorst und Gneisenau dort lagen!), es ging schließlich darum die Konvois dort abzusichern, da ist völlig egal ob da ein größeres oder kleineres Schlachtschiff liegt.
Ich sehe durchaus das Problem, dass Sie sich nicht mit kritischen Quellen auseinandersetzen und Dinge, die Ihrer Meinung zuwiderlaufen direkt als "deutschfeindlich" bewerten.
Ich habe die Bismarck auch nicht als schlecht bezeichnet, wie Sie es behaupten, sondern als teilweise veraltet und ineffizient. Und das habe ich soweit belegt.

Sound films first appeared in 1921. It may be that the crew were simply shooting silent film. expecting sound to be added later.
With small portable 16 mm or 8 mm film cameras you could not make any sound recordings at the time. They usually ran with spring gear motors and not yet electrically. Only in the early 1950s was this possible .... there was the Prince Eugen but already 5 years on the bottom of the Kwajalein Atoll.
