    This is a text book dog training lesson with Roux the border collie puppy! Roux listens pretty well, but at 5 months old, she’s still inconsistent when it comes to listening in distracting situations.
    If you want your dog to listen to you in situations they find distracting you have to prepare them for these occasions. I’ll show you two easy training exercises you can do to start building solid communication between you and your dog.
    Videos I reference in this video:
    How to teach your dog to listen around anything, even vacuum cleaners: • How to Get Your Dog to...
    How to teach your dog to fetch perfectly: • Everything YOU NEED to...
    The "Leave it/Look at me" combo: • How to Get Your UNFOCU...

    I'm so thankful for these videos. I just adopted my first dog. She's 9 months old and grew up in a shelter. Because of these videos she now knows: her name, sit, lay, stay, and come! We're still working on keeping these up when we're on walks, and perfecting her leash walking. But I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. They've helped me tremendously!

    yeah that is my dog, she is now 7 months and still does the same thing, she will play for a while and then go eat grass and dig dirt. We call her Fernanda like Ferdinand the Bull, she prefers staring at the bees and birds flying by. Once in a while she gets it together. I get when a dog gets bored this one is just goofy. Half the time when she comes back from a walk she is worse than when she left no matter how long or short it was. We keep trying but we feel like there is not winning with her. She was bred for herding, but honestly she think she is one of the cows. The worst part is when she just zones out so bad and for her safety's sake we actually end up having to pick her up and move her at times. We persist just gets really tiring, my husband's joke has become "that's why she was the last puppy left in the barn", we love her just not sure what's us with her.

    Well, you asked.... I'm becoming an R+ trainer due to growing up with a dog aggressive dog. A punitive/abusive home environment did no good for either of us. Thankfully, he never got into a scrap with another dog; we were vigilant about monitoring his behavior while he was out and managing his contact with other animals. Had my parents bothered to neuter him, his attitude toward other male dogs may have been different; but, times were different then, and he never got the chance to really be a "good boy" in all the ways he could have.
    So, thanks for what you do. :) We're the humans; it's up to us to make the decisions that will keep our pets safe and happy. Your videos make that easier for a lot of people. Keep up the good work.

    I have 5 dogs.....1 healer pit mix (shay louise) that is the aunt to the 3 puppies(Loki,Toby, & Haus. they are healer, aussie mini, with a small touch of pit. just turned 1 year old on april 1st.)
    We have been beating our heads against the wall trying to train them to not poop/pee in the house, they chase cars, they bark at and kinda half assed chase anybody that walks by our house. When we open the door they bolt out the door and run off into the woods which we don't want them to do. When we call them to come, they ignore us and our demands. I've set up and built an ample outdoor "kennel" they seem to enjoy it, but when we go to let them out into the kennel, they take off like a bat outa hell for the woods and don't listen to us, they blatantly ignore us as we're telling them no and to come and stay in the yard. I'm at my wits end. I've spent a small fortune in shoes and phone chargers. I've tried everything short of putting them in a school. We don't know what else to do but we love our doggies and won't give up. Any advise?? Please?

    I'm kind of biased to seeing a Border Collie in a training video. I've had mine for a month now and she's out performing any of my other dogs (she's like a machine, built to learn). So when I see this, I think to myself that using a Border Collie is like using a pro athlete to train a basic sport activity. (super easy mode)
    I really like the videos. I'm really encouraged to pursue more advanced things with my dogs now that you've taught me how to use good motivation to tune them in. After watching about 25 of your videos in a row, I see a lot of things I can improve on. You've given me much awareness on the behaviors used in training.

      Carol Bashour hmm shes quite young i wouldnt panic! You still got time to make her kick the habits. Watching these vids will help you alot! As the guy mentioned in the vids. The dog has to understand you first before yoi can start teaching it stuff.

    • @BS-fg7lf
      @BS-fg7lf 6 років тому

      Carol Bashour about the play biting there are a few ways to teach her to quit. One is emmiting a loud yelp and let your bitten hand go limp. This may kind of scare the dog for a second cause it thinks it just hurt you and will less likely do it again. The other is perhaps putting alot of quarters in a tin can and shake it wildly when it does something you dont like. It will suprise the dog and discourage it from doing the wrong thing again. But again. This is something that takes time and you have to stay on top of it

      I have an Australian Cattle Dog who is exactly the same. What we've found works best is just making sure he's had plenty of exercise 😊 Pretty much all of his behavioural issues disappear as soon as he's been on a run (we have a minimum of two per day, occasionally three. Even just a 15 minute walk or a game of fetch in the yard works absolute wonders).

  • @rubymimosa

    Only rescues. My bigs (rot mix, pit mix) are house trained, but it's proving beyond me to do the same for my littles, 4 dog chi-pack. Even the previously trained first chi lost it when 3 adult chi's came into the family over a 3 day period. They have a dog door they happily use but have 'accidents' multiple times a day. Can you point me in the right direction? To train multiple at once?
    We've rescued, rehabbed, & rehomed hundreds of rescues. I always specialized in fear aggressive dogs and always big. A 60lb dog was 'small' to me. Our family now includes a chi-pack and we're lost.
    After a brain tumor I'm disabled and my boys (husband, son) brought home a puppy (both for our 18 yr old dobi/lab mix as she was leaving us; and as therapy. I thought he was a ferret kit when they presented him!) Couple yrs later a rescue asked us to pull a chi-mix out of a high kill shelter. We ended up pulling 3 (all on the red list). Ack!

    Zak, when training, I have been told in the past not to repeat the command or else the dog will think that you have to repeat any command more than once in order for them to obey. Do you agree or is this something that eventually will be outgrown with continuous training? (Love all your videos so far and really find them so effective!)

    • @kineiya
      @kineiya 6 років тому +8

      Monica W. It's true. You only want to use the command like sit once instead of sit sit sit in rapid succession because sit then becomes sitsitsit. I believe he has a video where me mentions this.

    • @coloringroxs
      @coloringroxs 6 років тому +7

      That and saying it once and waiting for a response and you don’t get one in about 7 seconds then saying it once again instead of repeating it will keep your dog calmer instead of over excitement that you would be giving off and having the dog become over excited

    Could you make a video on teaching a dog how to play? My dog is a stray from spain, and have never gotten the concept, or seemed intrested. She's a mutt with racinghound genes, and I really need to tire her out before taking walks...

    My dog barks his little head off when guests come over and leave. Once guests settle down, he may do as well, he'll come over and check them out, but god forbid anyone touching him. He'll likely go to his spot after that, but will react badly to any sudden moves. He listens to me perfectly at pretty much anytime except when guests are either arriving or leaving, at that time, not even his currency, food, works.

    My dog does not ignore me when we are out, in fact he is amazing, he is such a chilled dog, in fact soooo chilled that if I leave the house and come home 5 hours later he just stays where he is, lying on the bed or the couch and I have to look for him to say hi and then all he does is wag his tail!!! The most independent dog ever but it leaves me feeling unloved when there is no excitement when I come home! Must I leave him outside when I go out? What can I do to get a reaction? Believe me when I tell you we are CLOSE!

      I had to erase my reply 3x because you deserve civility. You have an amazing dog that does love you, he hasn't destroyed things while you're gone, he greets you with a tail wag.
      My dog literally won't look at me. I have done nothing but pour gentle training into him since 6 weeks old and he's pulling me down and ran away this morning (he has returned). YOU don't have a dog training problem, you have a dog that cares about you. If you can't see that maybe we should trade dogs for a day.

      @@bethc8809 Hi Beth, I have done some more research on this subject only to find out that because he is so stable, happy and content and above all so confident that I will return home there is no need to make a big show of it! So I am content that my dog is so happy. I have accepted that it is what it is. I know he loves me, believe me I know he shows me in a million ways I just wanted the excitement that most owners have from their dogs when they come home and after my poodle died I missed it.
