I watch his show every saturday and bought the book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGQVgV21bQ7B9b9duQ1ByImyT9xHbjOKq because i like his method. He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.

The random reward system works on dogs the same way it does on people, rats, etc. A study done with rats showed that when they were given a feeder bar that when tapped, would produce food every time, the rats would tap and eat until they were full. When the bar released food only on random presses, the rats would keep tapping until it was clear that no more food would come out. This behavior translates directly into human gambling. Casinos are designed around this concept. The random, tiny win is enough to keep most people playing until they're out of money.

5 years old, but I wanted to add: the draw of intermittent (positive) reinforcement also applies to even subtle things like phone addiction, social media addiction, and app functionality. You chase the dopamine hit from random "likes," notifications, and etc. Doesn't have to happen each time you check (social media, phone, app) - you just have to get that reward every so often...

As a new owner of a 1.5 year old pit bull/boxer mix, i LOVE that you used one in a video like this! As a rescue dog, I immediately wanted to get a prong collar to begin her training, but seeing YOU train her with basic skills that she already understands and getting quick results has completely changed my mind. Thank you!

Zak you never fail me!!!! So Jaxson naturally “settles” but he just recently started this begging stuff!!! So I need to connect a command to his “settling” stage and use it when we are eating. The only thing we will need to work on with settling is not following me when I move from room to room lol THANK YOU!!!!!

A "place" que may work for you if you would like them to settle in a specific place such as a bed or open crate but you probably figured this out in the two years since you wrote this comment. lol.

I just got my mature rescue dog today. He has come from a very bad background. Whilst he has some of the basics I was struggling to figure out whether I'd be able to actually help him or if he'd be too much. I have to say that after watching 1 of Zak's videos I have managed to my dog to settle. So whilst he's snoring beside me Ive been bing watching all of the other videos. This one in particular is going to be one of the most important ones for us. THANK YOU so much

Zak George I actually use a bit different teaching with regards to stop begging. I use the keywords No Dont be Rude at first and as soon as my dog looks away I give her the positive Marker I use. Basically doing the exact opposite of what you want to do for training for other things. I dont know if you use negative markers or not but i do and that is why the word No is in front of the command of Dont Be Rude. But as soon as they stop the undesired action its important to give that positive marker. The dog will look back at you again with the use of the positive marker but that is fine as soon as they look away again give that positive marker again and repeat till dog loses interest and do this each time at meal time.
This teaches the dog to ignore people while eating. And when I use the negative marker its in a positive calm soothing voice. The positive marker i use that same voice as well. Dont wanna create any more excitement at your meal time. Make your meal time boring as hell for a dog despite smells.
Eventually i can just say Dont Be Rude in a whisper and they will go do something else while we eat that is if they beg at all after doing this. But as soon as im done eating they get rewarded with maybe treats but definitely lots of good attention like a good game of tug or fetch. That is very very very very important to make sure to give your dog attention after you have eatin peacefully. Plus its good to get a bit of exercise after you eat anyways so this is also a major health benefit for the human.
I never feed from the plate im eating from even left over scraps. Left over scraps get placed in her food bowl or used for training treats after she has let me ate without being bothered. This has worked like a dream on all the dogs i have tried this on so far. I have done this with about 20 dogs so far and all of them stopped begging at meal time within a week. Most stopped begging at meal time within 3 days.
Whats funny my current dog used to be a super beggar. She cried barked anything to try to get some food even tried to steal from my plate a couple times. Now i can leave her alone in a room with my plate of food and she wont touch it. And most of the time when i am eating she will go eat her own food or go laydown on her bed. But as soon as she hears me put my plate aside she perks up and comes sees me for her playtime.

After watching this video I got my dog to capture Settle eventually. I would say settle whenever he was calm or about to fall asleep. I did this at random times for months (if I remembered). Then one day I used it as a command and it worked ! I was in awe and shock. Greatest achievement thus far. Thanks for the video!

  • @yummymummy1981
    @yummymummy1981 9 років тому

Definitely going to try this with my dog.
She isn't a beggar (I always tell her to go and lay down when we eat, so nine times out of ten, she automatically does it when food is served, she may have a sniff of the air, just to see what it is we are having, but that's its) but teaching her to settle might help when I have friends round.
She has a few nerves, and will submissively pee, especially if there is more than one person in the house, or if that person has a loud voice, or a dominant personality. Teaching her to settle, instead of greeting submissively might help her a lot, she used to pee any time ANYONE, including me, came in, it's taken months of work, but this week she is now greeting me at the door instead of hiding in her crate, and no peeing. She will still go into her crate when me AND my son come home, but the second I sit down she comes out and says hello. It's a shame, she is such a sweet dog, just a little nervous.

I've found that using a clicker and a small food reward at the same time when initially teaching our dog something new really helps; then, when I see that she understands what I'm asking of her, I remove both the clicker and the food from the equation - because I want her to execute the command for me, not for food - and just give her a quick but gentle pat on her head and tell her she's a good girl. It's nice to see that you do the same thing. ::thumbs up::

Thank you for this video! My first dog wasn't a problem with begging after I taught her lay down with her head down and she soon caught on and would just take a nap when I was eating automatically.lol. my dog now tho is the very opposite and this video has gave solution to her 2 main problems. I tried training her like I did my old dog, but then had to up it to actually teaching her the command "head down" and then later "turn" to make her turn away from me in a 180 turn. But she still bothers me coz she tries to loop hole Everything. And she is also incredibly clingy. She doesn't get separation anxiety anymore (unless we're not at home and I go to the bathroom or something). And she's relatively calm when it's just me, she knows "go away" "buzz off" and "get the fuck away from me" as a cue to get out of my face and go somewhere else.lol. and then she goes to play with her toys or go lay down to nap. But she is extremely clingy. And when there is company, she is the worst. She is a huge attention hog, she demands it. This video will help TONS. She is also very intelligent so sometimes when training, it'll start to work, but she'll figure something out and it no longer works.lol

Zak and Bri these are great. Would love more detail on how long you take with each of these dogs in the descriptions and how long a novice trainer should expect to spend with each concept. It would really help with setting expectations because these videos make it look almost too easy sometimes and I feel like some would be tempted to revert to old bad techniques if they don't have instantaneous zak-like success. Good Job Jacob! In all honesty, huge help. I have my first puppy right now Bella, German Shepard mix and really struggling with the excitement that comes with meal time for adults. Such a helpful video and can’t wait to put to practice.

I am definitely trying my best to make Tyson's training more consistent because he is definitely a ball of energy that gets very out of hand and frustrating!

Awesome concept and I'm working on this with Oaklynn. She's a lot like Jacob so this tutorial helps me with the same issues. Thanks again.

I love these videos with Jacob! He reminds me so much of my dog. These videos are really great for people with hyper dogs.

Thank you for this! I’m going to try this with my dog. She didn’t used to beg but my mom started feeding her human food. It got so bad that I had to threaten my mom to not come over to her house anymore if she kept a feeding my dog. Now my dog begs all the time and it sucks. But hopefully we will get her out of that habit soon!

Wow! My dog looks almost identical to Jacob! Except she’s brindle and white with multicoloured eyes. :) but she’s so similar to Jacob all the way down to how she behaves. I’m hoping I can implement the training shown here because it would be awesome for her to settle when needed.
