    Former Boeing Everett Commercial Division here... I have been up close and personal with the GE 90 Turbofan Engine used on the Triple Seven (777). I tell people the letters and numbers on Engine have a special meaning: G = Gigantic E = Engine 9 = 9 feet diameter Front Fan. I have stood inside main inlet and GE 90 with cowling is so big it wouldn't fit inside my house. It would be sticking up through attic and past roof.
    The 2 Engines used on 777 have a much power as the 4 engines on the 747. That translates to exceptional performance when needed. In case of engine failure, a 777 can fly across the ocean on a single engine safely. The Engines are the most expensive single part of aircraft. That is why Boeing uses 'Just In Time' inventory control. If Engines are needed on Wednesday, they arrive on Tuesday and are staged to be installed on Wednesday. No use having expensive engines sitting around a month before needed. They cost millions of dollars and Boeing uses lots of engines.

      @@WhiskeyGulf71 I think that is when the burners are lit and pressure is built inside the combustion chamber, maybe the high/low pressure turbines? I've been also looking for the proper term, if there is.

      @@WhiskeyGulf71 the low pitched sound is the ignition of the fuel when the engine igniters are lit.
      When a jet engine starts, there's a sequence to its operation. First there's an air starter that forces air through the combustion chamber to help spool the engine up to its required RPM. Another device that helps is the accessory gearbox that makes the blades spin right as the air starter engages. Then once the engine is up to speed, the fuel injectors start putting fuel into the engine and the igniters are lit, then there's fuel ignition. And then you have a running jet engine.

    It's only 15,000ft lbs more than a Trent XWB 97 so what's the big deal here? May aswell strap a JT3D to a Trent XWB because that's all you get over it, literally.

    • @Amehdion
      @Amehdion 4 роки тому +1

      Price of a GE90-115B = $27.5 million USD... Cost of a RR Trent XWB-97 = $35 million USD + the cost of strapping a P&W JT3D-1 to it... So yeah, you could do that if you didn't care about money.

    • @lukekeylock2935
      @lukekeylock2935 4 роки тому

      @@Amehdion Price and application vary Trent XWB is far newer and lighter and uses more advanced materials and triple shaft architecture unlike the GE-90 which is a giant CF-6 with more stages.

    • @Amehdion
      @Amehdion 4 роки тому +6

      @@lukekeylock2935 ehh, sorta. weight difference is 3,000 lbs and the GE90 ends up with a higher TWR. The "more advanced materials" thing is a moot point, the GE90 is packed with advanced composites even being the first engine to have composite primary fan blades. In the end, I'm not here to argue about which engine is better, they are both pretty impressive. I was just saying that there are reasons why you might choose one over the other, cost being a big one.
