- Mark heads into the public lands of Arkansas with Clay Newcomb to learn the backwoods approach to deer hunting of working saddles and still-hunting. He’ll get one day to study under Clay and then he’ll set out on his own to kill a backcountry buck himself.

I came for the hunting but stayed for the Newcomb! Absolutely the best guy meat eater has
He’s solid. Took a shine to him first time he was on.
Spot on!
That’s entirely based on what specific criteria. How much they do for conservation and hunting education? That’s Steve-o and Cal. Best to listen to while trying to sleep? That’s Clay. Also best stache. Best hunter? That’s Remi Warren (though he isn’t technically part of the crew). Examples go on and on, ad infinitum.
That old guy is awesome, so humble and wise. God bless the old timers
James’ reactions to the success is genuinely heartwarming
Lol I got the same reply to my comment from 2 days ago about winning a prize must be bots!!!!
The family moment at the end was precious.
Clay is definitely one of my favorites. I can appreciate that old school way.
This is my favorite of these so far. That man's reaction to another man's success was genuine as hell and i felt that warmth immediately. Needs some camp cooking. Only remarks.
This was one of the best deer hunting videos on this channel in a long time. Clay Newcomb is a big reason, keep them coming. Loved the visits and dialog with James.
As a native Arkansan, I've been waiting for this episode. That terrain looks really familiar!
Where is this at?
@@majordudley35 I'm from Pennsylvania, but I've been to Arkansas. I can't say the exact location but those are the Ouachita Mountains. Clay has also previously said that the Ouachitas are where James Lawrence grew up and still lives. I believe the exact location is in a national forest somewhere.
Same here!! Im in Mt Ida!
It does look like around Mt. Ida haha. But honestly it’s funny because Arkansas to me is swampy river bottoms with ridges and hills. South Central Arkansas here haha. We really do have it all in Arkansas as far as terrain goes.
How you know Clay is that guy you want in your camp, every time. "I was gonna wait for you, but I didn't."
That's me 1 minute late to bad to sad. Lol
Can't let others get in the way of your perfect day
Yep
As an Arkansan, that is quite a feat to take a buck like that in the mountain country in as short of time as you had. Great series of vids
This is what it’s all about, James is the kind of guy who should all aspire to be. His happiness for mark is the spirit the woods needs more of! Well done guys!
I'm 61 years old from Idaho been hunting that country elk antelope
dear my whole wife but I love clay this guy is channeling old school all the time
Mark is great, I been listing to him for years. He has a great positive attitude and not afraid to talk about trials and tribulations.
Also Clay is literally what I imagine as an actual hunter. I love the rest of the crew but Clay is a page from the past.
I love everything about MeatEater but Clay is the best.
Same, when it comes to being an outdoorsman... I want to be more like Clay.
Clay and Randy
@dargie12317 so weird sometimes when you post a comment a year ago and a year later someone comments on it.
Such a good episode! Love the dynamic of Mark and Clay. Also love how stoked James was about the buck too!
been hunting this way all my life . its the only way i know .. never could understand the modern drive to spend thousands and thousands of dollars chasing antler sizes, sitting in funished towers over baited plots ... always felt like they were missing the whole point of the experence .
Hunting antler sizes is what saved deer
Really pumped for the rest of this series. Think it’ll be one of my favorites.
I’ve hunted Francis Marion National Forest in SC for 20 years. I’ve got a good collection of mature bucks I’ve taken from this not target rich environment. I am so proud of those 14” 15” 8 points and one 10pt. I actually hunted those deer. We walk in with climbing stands and climb high up to see over the coastal scrub. This is for real hunting. I love love this content! Thanks for sharing a true experience!
There is nothing like talking/listening to someone like James that has hunted their entire life. I don't care how much you know or think you do....you can always learn from experience like that.
No question, unequivocally, most definitely clay Newcomb is my favorite meat eater crew member. I'd love to shake his hand!!! Maaaan what a beautiful buck!!! Great job Mr Mark 🤘🤘💪💪🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
He is legitimately the same in person. Met him a couple of times here in Arkansas and he is always friendly
Clay is my favorite Meateater team member! Love the bear grease podcast!
Very well done clay.
I love seeing home get some love thanks to Clay being on the team. Loved the episode.
Clay makes every episode just that much better. Great series guys absolutely love it
As an Arkansan myself, (northeast) this is awesome. It is awesome to see you branching out and hunting here, because it is not the easiest state to hunt in with monsters everywhere…. Clay is the best!!
Men at their finest! The meat eater crew does amazing work!
On the ground public land hunting is the real deal. Respect to people who hunt the way I learned growing up. And I still hunt that way
Listened to this podcast a while back and I’ve been anticipating this episode. Well done, Mark. It’s good to get back to the basics every now and then.
Keep the Clay Newcomb content comin!
Love this episode. This is the way we do it in western montana. Somehow find a solitary whitetail buck in the middle of a massive national forest
There is this interesting dynamic that happens with older hunters and anglers. They feel more emotion and value out of seeing the younger generation carry on their tradition. Even to the point where it trumps their own personal hunting and angling endeavors. I see this in my father every time me or my brother gets a buck of any size. The same when he helps one of his 8 grand children catch a fish. He's more happy in those moments than when I saw him get a 140 inch black-tail, or his 9lb large-mouth. The same thing can be seen and reflected in James's whole reaction in Mark's success, even to the point of helping him skin the buck and quarter it up, all with a huge smile on his face. James had just met Mark as well, it shows that synergistic woodsman kinship fueled the comradery. There is something within the mind, heart, or soul that provokes the older generation to feed off and ultimately relish the success of the next vanguards.
Weather you believe in creation or evolution, that's a beautiful trait we have woven into our DNA and it's quite admirable.
I have so much admiration for Clay !! Such a down to earth guy
Always love to hear the wisdom and knowledge James and Clay share on these videos. Look forward to the next one.
I wish these were longer since we have to wait for em now. Bring back the binge!!
Beautiful to see the respect for the animal after the shot.
Love the style of wearing mixed cover camo as your everyday garb.
Fantastic episode. One of my top five Meateater productions/episodes/videos and I have watched them all. Clay and Mark are both good men and class acts!👍👍👍
That looks like the quachita National Forest. My lease is 1/2 mile from land that looks just like that. Unfortunately no mule. I am going to try it this year.
This is close to how my grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncles hunted in the Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania. I always love a good old back country public lands video as a Pennsylvanian.
It’s good to see the struggle. Especially as a new hunter. Makes it feel like hunting at a level of success that most of the MeatEater personalities hunt at is achievable.
I just struggled through 5 days of unsuccessful elk hunting here in Idaho and I have to keep reminding myself that success rates are realistically in the 15% range and that this was only my 2nd season elk hunting and 4th season hunting overall. Gotta work through the struggles and keep soaking up all the knowledge and information I can. One day it’ll come together and I’ll be packing a big bull out of the mountains and even then I’ll still have a lifetime of struggle and learning ahead of me.
I grew up hunting this same kind of ground in SE Oklahoma. Really pumped to see someone like Mark come down to this region and make it work. Great episode. I loved the insights of channeling his dad and just slowing down to enjoy the process.
Hunted Searcy and Newton County Arkansas my whole life and I love to see a video about what REAL deer hunting is like! We work for em around here! Great video! Need to do one on the Buffalo river.
Another quality video from MeatEater and Clay Newcomb. Keep up the good work!
Good vibes. The best bit. " i was gonna wait for ya, but I didnt" lol
Way to go guys 👍 hunting the way it should be done. Very nice mature buck.
BEAUTIFUL buck and a great episode. That deer is picture perfect to the point that it made me misty just looking at his beauty. Awesome, dude.
Empathy.......has a pic of Mr. Lawrence next to it in the dictionary. What a great man and mentor. Good hunt Mark! 👏
I love clay and marks interactions with each other, I always find myself laughing at something they said. “I was gonna wait for you, but I didn’t” 😂
What true hunters are right there! Those are the guys we need to idolize them!
Awesome work by the cameraman and hunter. Excellent footage. So much to be learned from this video.
Been waiting to watch this! Did not disappoint! Beautiful
As a fellow Michigander, I'm pretty sure my Uncles and your Dad are programmed exactly alike. They've hunted northern Michigan deer for 40 years and usually come back with talk about how beautiful the woods were, not about all the deer encounters they had. Their walls have a few repectable 8 pointers, but mostly are filled with smaller 4s and 6s, but they are great story tellers and the tales behind those 4s and 6s are priceless. Great series Mark! I look forward to seeing the rest.
That's pure Michigan bud. I myself am a michigander. Started hunting deer 3 years ago. I've been successful every year and I proudly keep every skull. Doe or Buck
Well boys, this was a good one. Love the simplicity of it. Thanks again.
LOVE, LOVE, love, this episode!
2 days to opening day getting me jacked up with this series
Sadly I had to come back to work and will miss it. Good luck buddy
Premieres in 23hrs!? I can't wait 23hrs, I need it now!
We need more newcomb deer hunts
Love still hunting.
I could watch these 2 guys for hours. Hope they do a Chasing November 2022
I loved the video and agreed with all of it , I have 50 years hunting white tails and would like to share information with all of you, remember this the big bucks sleep on the top of a ridge or on the edge of water, so you can’t sneak up on them easily, when you are walking hunting ( still hunting) take two or 3 steps then stop and glass , always watching your wind , i could go on for hours lol the only thing I seen you do wrong was grunt while walking, you while chase away does and if the big boy comes to you it will be down wind and you will never see it , ❤️everyone good luck hunting, if anyone has questions I’ll try to help ✌🏻
Clay might be my favorite guy on MeatEater.
So cool seeing them hunt a place I'm familiar with and have hunted.
Great episode of a great series
Damn, what a good hunt. What a beautiful deer.
You can literally see the excitement in James's face when he saw the deer his eyes were smiling
this is one of the best gun hunts ive ever seen
Wonderful video and genuine mentality
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
Seeing that landscape reminds me of where I grew up in NYS. The deer are bigger but it's the same style of hunting.
8:43, best scene of the video no doubt 😂
👍🤣👍
Great episode! Really hit home for me as 90% of my deer killed have been spot and stalk and looking for sign. Also just enjoying the woods and what my dad taught me. Again great episode and can't wait to my hunting buddies again. Cheers
Great video! Clay is awesome and his hunting technique and attitude is spot on. This video reminds me of hunting public land in Oregon, now days you better take the first legal buck you see, because it may be the only one.
The most impressive Arkansan detail in this video 🕷👀
Great video...I really enjoyed this one....especially the call home to your family.!! That's always the BEST part for me. Keep it up
Loving this series.
100%! Love my midwest whitetail hunting, but the grind of Wyoming Antilope with a bow is sole cleansing.
These are usually scams.
Excellent episode!! Great job Mark
This series is awesome! Another killer idea from MeatEater
Beautiful buck man . Congratulations
This is how I grew up hunting in Oklahoma smaller properties over the last 55 yrs of my life I've learned a lot about deer and have a fairly impressive wall myself nothing I'd call monster deer but lots of respectable 8 and 10 points with a lot of sixs and fork horns mixed in to fill the freezer was my goal great video!!! Brought back a lot of memories with bow season only 3 weeks away I'm chomping at the bit to add a couple more to that wall this yr got some good prospects lol happy hunting!!!!!
Really enjoying these series keep it up
Pride, on top of pride! James is my kind of fella, he is so damn tickled at the Rookie's success. Clay is as solid as they come. At least he kept the campfire burning after he ate, lol
Nice one Mark!
Arkansas may be a poorer state, but we certainly have a much higher quality of life here than places like california and new york. In Arkansas, you are allowed to live and breathe without being crammed together like a can of sardines. You are allowed to actually have a life here rather than spending all your time struggling to pay the costs of living that other places have. It is cheaper to buy a house in Arkansas and pay it off over a few years than it costs to rent a small apartment in los angeles. Arkansas is a generally pleasant place to be and live, where many states and most cities are miserable.
I certainly like the look of it, and the folks seem wonderful. Sure it would beat my current abode: London, UK.
Thanks for sharing.
Love Clay!!!!
The biggest buck I ever saw was while I was still hunting up in North Dakota with my compound. He was every bit of 140 inches and 220 pounds.
First saw him at 40 yards but he was moving quick thru the timber.... Ended up getting busted of course, but it's one of my favorite hunting memories for sure
Clay is the man
I remember listening to podcast episode when they’re talking about this hunt.
No, Akern! Love it
This was an excellent episode!
Now that is my kind of hunting!
Now as an Australian hunter.
That type of country looks amazing.
Text book American hunting in my mind.
It’s on my bucket list to come to your country and hunt a deer like that in terrain like that. Then to sit down a night or two afterwards and eat that animal with friends.
If you come to Arkansas I'll take you around and hopefully get you on some deer
Always welcome in my home in the ozarks
I watched it on big screen tv. But couldn't comment there. As a trad bow hunter I love this video. Technology is getting so advanced it maybe soon it won't be hunting anymore. You will know exactly what time they will show up and you kill your animal. The spot and stalk sun to your back wind to your face walking like a deer would few steps constantly scanning for deer plaid fleece shirt fleece pants ( makes no noise when brushing against brush. ) Use of baking soda to kill the smell in swirling winds. I don't see this type of hunting really much anymore. Where you rely on yourself as a hunter and leave technology out of it.
I trad hunt these mountains and it is something special. The sites and sounds are thebest out there
Lived in Midwest but grew up in the south. Completely different worlds. Live in Arkansas where they just don't make them "big" by most standards. Through my life I have hunted with dogs, still hunted, trophy deer stand hunted, hunted public, hunted hi end private, hunted my own land, hunted mountains. All is a different experience and should be relished particularly with those you enjoy it WITH. Used to be a loner but am wiser and frankly not physically able to do that smart anymore. As long as you are an ethical hunter and focus on a clean and quick kill I applaud you. Pass it on.
Damn, I love, love, love the old ways. I would pay good money, or provide free labor to learn from Clay and his friends and family. I have always believed, the way you do something speaks about you as a person. Tragically I lost my father and grandfather early, and have had to teach myself.
That’s real hunting in my book!!
Such a cool hunt! I hunt whitetails with a muzzleloader in my home state of Oregon and I do much the same style of hunting. My bucks aren't trophies when it comes to scoring but they are hard earned just like this one.
Still hunting is my preferred way of hunting whitetails because I do not have the patience to sit in one spot all day. There is definitely a skill to it. It is best after or during a rainfall so the ground is less noisy, but it can work out in any conditions.
Making me get excited for opening day!
I completely agree when he said you can’t go into a guys trophy room and start adding inches and know the world, and how good of a hunter he is. Great understanding what a real hunter is. It’s not about inches in a rack. It’s about providing food for there family, respecting that animal, and having fun while doing it.
Nice Buck Mark
I hope to go on my first deer hunt I’m not expecting anything like this big boy but I’m so excited
