@Doey Jiaz, I also watched that epie, could feel the emotion almost hey. Dougie is a real old soul and i think could'nt have taken a better buddy to hunt with for that epie!!
Just got my first deer ever. Was bow hunting in southern Minnesota. Was a nice 6 point I've been excited all day to sit down and watch this while I taste my first deer heart. Steve and this show is probably the biggest influence of why I've become passionate about hunting and conservation. Thank you.
19:44 This moment, this kid, mouth dirty with food, and a happy moment with everyone together. This is the moment that shows the importance of this group of people work. Keeping a work, preserving a species, and cultivating this knowledge about hunting. Great show.
I love this episode, how you caught Doug's passion for land management, and how you then took action with the Back 40 series. I have huge respect for what y'all are doing for hunting.
It’s interesting how hunting philosophies manifest differently. My grandfather always taught us that if guys at camp were busting their butts, driving deer to you, being picky was not an option. You were to shoot.
Different goals. Doug is managing for big bucks. Your grandfather was trying to fill bellies (I’m guessing this was during/after the Depression and WWII, when seeing a deer was like seeing a snow leopard in the wild?)
Not really, it was more about respect for the guys crawling through the briers and brush trying to get you a deer. I once passed a scrubby 6ish point on a drive. It was frowned on, haha. I’m not saying either way is right or wrong, it’s just interesting, that’s all.

My first deer was killed on a drive, the guys wanted me to get another one. But I passed on a small doe and all the guys was pissed at me. They told me it was disrespectful to the driver to pass on deer.
