Ok this man ain’t lying. I just looked at over 50 decoys and they all look like deer caught in a spotlight. After my professional opinion I came to the conclusion that all decoys suck but this one. Never hunted with a decoy for deer but I might try it next year
This is the best RoughCuts so far. I've had to stop the video every 2-3 minutes, rewind, and have my wife watch because it's something so insightful, funny, or just downright cool. Cannot begin to express how happy I am about the transition from the "Meateater" format to the "Rough Cuts" format.
Back in the 80s we would marvel at the big antlered Texas Bucks featured in the deer hunting magazine’s. Back then in Illinois we considered any buck to be a trophy. Amazing how the modern Whitetail has evolved. Love this format. Thanks.
That Dave guy is badass, you should take him on a couple hunts. The way he thinks outside the box and his attention to detail it’s admirable. I hunt mule deer so I don’t have a need for a deer decoy but if I hunted whitetail I would definitely be using one of those
This vid has some of the best footage I’d ever seen. That clip when that deer cuts between Steve and the camera man. Then the focus shift from the buck approaching the decoy to Steve connecting his release. Gah. Too good.
Come to Ontario … iv hunted for whole life .. get a deer every year but usually go a whole season and see a handful of deer.. hunt good properly too. Sucks up here unless you got large groups for drives which is lame
Really enjoying the new rough cut series Steve and crew 😊 loving those decoys I want one I have a blast each Fall using decoys but I've never had one that realistic 😊
If a deer is going to take a shot at it, that's a solid decoy! - Also, this is a special place in Texas, don't go thinking we have bucks like this all over 😅
As a hunter in central Texas I definitely think I want to try out one of Dave's decoys for deer and Turkey. Also, seems like just a very real dude following his passion. Great episode!
Meateater is a podcast I love and hate at the same time. The arrow shot was really nice. I had to watch it twice because I thought you hit in the neck and dropped it where it stood. You definitely pierced the wind organs.
More of a fisherman than a hunter. Been deer hunting once maybe when I was like 10. So my expertise should definitely be headed to… Pretty sure when the wild deer charges the decoy like a raging bull then the decoy is pretty good.
The decoys look great The posturing buck is spot on The neighsayers haven’t got a clue and should just keep scrolling through tic tok Keep up the good work
Dave came out to hunt geese on my farm in Oregon back when he had first started making his decoys, I think he was still making them one at a time in his garage 😅 He and his buddy left to early because he had somewhere to be, a thousand geese came in an hour after they left as they always did on that particular farm . Even back then he didn’t think he’d ever sell but a few decoys to friends.. Hey it only took 30 yrs Dave and now your a celebrity 😅
Dudes, Dave Smith is real as fuck savant level understanding of game. Also, the coolest dude you will ever know. Does what Dave wants to do. ❤ you Mother River DS.
Why don't you rub the decoy on the first deer you harvested to transfer the smell and potentially remove any unfamiliar odor? Could be effective to attract other bucks? By the way, as many mentioned here - Rough Cuts are an awesome series. Thank you so much.
I got a bit of a rush watching that last setup, just waiting for Steve to arrow that big ol' boy. As I watched it posture, before they cut to Steve, the voice in my head was just screaming, shoot it, shoot it, do it now! Kinda how Steve whisper yells at his kids to shoot things.
Rinella's right about rattling. Bucks come and go fast...they also come in from all directions (come close to shooting one in self defense before). Decisions are snap and they're not always the right one, especially in the thick stuff where we hunt. I really like the idea of decoys but carrying all that stuff around by yourself gets pretty cumbersome.
Loved the discussion about interviewing a buck. By the way, if you don't want him to bullshit you, you have to buy him a beer before the interview. It's a fact.
Love it. Would love to hunt there though. I definitely want to decoy some next year. If anyone has any good recommendations on how to do it please help.
I live in Ontario Canada, and there are plenty of big bucks in my area. I have unfortunately, never had any luck rattling in a deer. Been hunting deer since 1974, and have taken quite a few deer, but when it comes to rattling, I'm a failure.
these rough cuts are beginning to be my new favorite from meat eater
More Steve!!… That’s all I want!!
The heart and star of this story was Dave. Beautiful decoys with great attention to detail. Loved the story behind it all.
THANKYOU! ; I just try to get through these things lol
@@dsddavesmithyour jokes were hilarious!
one of my favorite videos from meat eater ever. probably the quickest bow kill i have seen on video.
I love the “I saw kickers”, that’s all it would’ve taken for me too 😂. These really are good episodes, hope they continue!
What are kickers?
@@itsflymyguy to put it simple, points on points lol
@@nickhartwig950 got it

Awesome and thank you so much !
Love the Rough Cuts series!
Steve’s favorite word and shirt worthy:
LUXURIATE!!!!
Great episode
a) This is genuinely really great content.
b) More Dave Smith please.
c) That arrow literally dropped that buck, that was neat to see.

Rinella is give the fans what they want. Upvote this so he sees!
What a cool video and hunts! I've know and seen DSD decoys over the years but seeing an interview with Dave makes me want to go out and buy one now!
Sir! You are the decoy god! They are so incredibly lifelike. I admire your vision and the talent of those who work for you!
Wow thank you so much ! Honestly, that means a ton to me
Where do I buy a decoy from you sir
Those decoys must be expensive
man that was some of the best whitetail footage ive ever seen. what an episode, now i gotta start saving for one of those decoys lol

what a shot steve!
Those are amazing decoys. Dave is amazingly humble. Very refreshing. 👍👍
Thank you so much !
@@dsddavesmith Very impressive, Dave. Have you ever considered a decoy bedded down?
That decoy buck and the setups for using are fantastic. Hreat workmanship, Dave. Awesome video Steve thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much David !
Mr. Smith is an artist.
Thank you so much !

Michigan hunter myself. It’s a really good thing I like sitting in the woods alone because that’s the only thing you do 85% of the time.
Come to

I bet Steve loves talking to that guy. Highly skilled - maybe even savant level attention to detail. Much like Steve’s writing style. Perfect combo :)
Imagine getting to pick and choose bucks at your leisure! Hahaha! Bravo! Another outstanding episode, Steven.
If a deer is going to take a shot at it, that's a solid decoy! - Also, this is a special place in Texas, don't go thinking we have bucks like this all over 😅
I’ve read some of Steve’s books, I just want to say he is one of the best nature writers ever.
Great episode! As a guy in his 40s trying to get into hunting it's cool to see how the decoy can be set up and used. I appreciate the info.
I love your intimate description and books, thank you for what you do, I’d love to hunt with you.
That was a really cool episode. I think that's about as much fun as you could possibly have in the whitetail woods.
Love the rough cuts!!
Mr Dave Smith just became my favorite person hahaha. Freakin awesome dude
You just became mine; thank you so much! I hate doing things like this, but I got through it and thanks to people like you
As a hunter in central Texas I definitely think I want to try out one of Dave's decoys for deer and Turkey. Also, seems like just a very real dude following his passion. Great episode!
I live in central Texas and never know anyone to hunt with. Where u located. I'm south from Dallas .like near ferris
I goose hunted with a guide that used DSD goose decoys 4 or 5 years ago.. They are hands down the best decoys I've ever laid eyes on.
⚠️🔥🔥🔥🔥🦌💪🏽🤙🏽
Pure MeatEater Gold!!!
Congratulations on a very nice white tail buck!
Great camera angles great show
Sick decoys bro
Great episode
Really enjoy the rough cuts!
Meateater is a podcast I love and hate at the same time.

great episode the deer graphic's were amazing,
These are so great. I think Dave is funny!1
In one moment I thought the decoy was the real buck. Amazing detail
19:24 Camelbak chute mag. Hands down the best water bottle and lid combo on the market bar none.
What a shot💪🏻

Pretty sure when the wild deer charges the decoy like a raging bull then the decoy is pretty good.
I used to make my own Canadian geese decoy's and they worked great for me and my friends
Great video!
That's awesome stuff.. one day I'll go south
Pennsylvania native 🙋🏼♂️ that’s like a dream buck in my area 😂
Probably one of the harder things to film epic job guys
Merry Christmas to you and your family. May your troubles be less and your blessings be more and nothing but happiness come through your door. 😊
We need more meat eating for a show called Meateater. Like Steve said, “Knife skills are life skills.” I miss the kitchen episodes.
That’s an incredible decoy. I’ve yet to find one that I trust, so I rarely use them. This one would be 30 yards from my tree every day if I had it.
The decoys look great
The posturing buck is spot on
The neighsayers haven’t got a clue and should just keep scrolling through tic tok
Keep up the good work
Thank you so much !
What rifle is that? Beautiful rifle
I was searching the comments, hoping to find that out!
I love rough cuts better than the produced show!
Nice buck for sure. I like your ."akern" call! I have one and used it all.season!
I hope Dave Smith reads all the comments saying how cool he is
I hope you realize how cool you are for saying such a nice thing; God Bless you and your family
The O’Reilly’s Auto parts soundtrack hits different here.

Ha! That's the story of my life; either a little too early or a little too late lol. But thank you for allowing me to hunt !
Next Podcast Steve is going to have to have a rutting buck in the studio. We need answers!!
Another hreat show, very educational.
Awesome buck special rack with them kickers !!
i dont understand how where I hunt there will be 2 mature bucks for 5 square miles but they have a spot that has 15 in 100 square yards
its a ranch with feeders
Deer farms breed specifically for game farms.
Don’t think you have hunted a big Texas ranch.
Maybe try different spots, who knows where you are but there is some amazing public land in Colorado if you look hard for elk, or mule deer
You don’t have a show that pays for you to go to the best spots
Dudes, Dave Smith is real as fuck savant level understanding of game. Also, the coolest dude you will ever know. Does what Dave wants to do. ❤ you Mother River DS.
Yer awesome
Killer bow shot. Wow.
Why don't you rub the decoy on the first deer you harvested to transfer the smell and potentially remove any unfamiliar odor? Could be effective to attract other bucks? By the way, as many mentioned here - Rough Cuts are an awesome series. Thank you so much.
I like the way you think !
Charles Beauty was a master at rattling up south texas bucks
I miss steve cooking at the end of the episodes
They thought they were slick remixing the home depot music and thought we wouldn't notice at 19:00
I think more content with Dave Smith should be in the works.
Ahh you're too kind!

I will take one for Christmas
The light coloured buck that charged the decoy might not have been the biggest but looked very cool.
Target rich environment right there.
Hahaha "why are its ears back it looks like a donkey". ? Cuz you've never seen bucks interact with each other apparently. Haha
Exactly ! (fist bump)
man these little bucks have great genetics.
Being a SWPA hunter, you are right about the rarity of bucks like that. Have you ever handgun hunted? That was a good environment for it.
Around 19:45 that bucks nose looked like it had been broken at some point.
Loved the discussion about interviewing a buck. By the way, if you don't want him to bullshit you, you have to buy him a beer before the interview. It's a fact.
The music choice gives Home Depot vibes lol
I thought the same haha
Sounds like the title to my butchery book, "Rough Cuts"
Love it. Would love to hunt there though. I definitely want to decoy some next year. If anyone has any good recommendations on how to do it please help.
17:47 deer has some good looking war wounds
Mr. Smith should look into doing stand up. Laughing my ass off !! Thank you sir!!! 😂
LOL! Thank you
🔥
What rifle was Seth using? That stock is sweet!
That's a beautiful rifle that Seth has. What type is that?
Yo is that buck still kicking right at the end looks like it to me
I like this better. Hunting mixed with a backstory.
Beauty
South Texas is a special place! If you have enough money. Lol
what broadeads are these guys using? This buck and the one mark Kenyon shot were almost immediate kills.
It was spined-that drop is due to paralysis.
Yeah Texas can spoil a man fast. We are definitely blessed here with good quality, and quantity.
I live in Ontario Canada, and there are plenty of big bucks in my area. I have unfortunately, never had any luck rattling in a deer. Been hunting deer since 1974, and have taken quite a few deer, but when it comes to rattling, I'm a failure.
What Make and model rifle is Seth shooting and what seat is Steve carrying?
What kind of rifle is Seth using in this episode?
17:48 typical Texas Stud…all you gotta do is find his Bench Press Brother
Where was this hunt again? Which ranch?
