Thank You Gowlian Janice I am a 62 year old grandpa and very unfit but I have Taken up Shaolin Kung Fu to help my grandson who is 5 we are both enjoying it and this Video you have shared is an excellent tutorial on the Five stances thanks for sharing
Can’t believe just doing these exercises lost weight!! Always wanted to learn Kung fu. Your teaching step by step is awesome never thought I would learn. It’s like a whole new language. Love your videos.
The stances look so easy when you do them. When I tried, it wasn't as easy as I thought. The last demo was so awesome though. I will be watching this again and again to practice some more. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills!
I’m also from the Philippines 🇵🇭 where I was born in Quezon City in the year 1971 and I was raised in the US since I was 2 years old in 1973. And I’ve been practicing Hung-ga Kung-fu for more than 11 years since February 2009 and I should be getting close to the black belt. Salamat po Janice Hung. Muah 💋
I've always wanted to learn kung fu or wushu and this is exactly as I requested. I love it! Thank you for sharing these kung fu stances. Looking forward for more videos!
Thank you! My 6 year old son is learning wu bu quan at his school once every 4 weeks and this will help him remember some of his parts, postures and transitions. I can't wait to show him this video tomorrow.
4:44 I remember my trainer forcing me to stay still in that stance for long time. I always thought it was something a punishment of some sort. and every objection you do against him 20 pushups penalty.
Ugh never realised how weak my legs are until i started trying these stances 🥺 but i will keep trying. Thank you for the tutorial! I hope i will be able to master these.
Wow! You really taught me how to enhance my way of "actively" resting without having to horse stance or being forced to slouch down like a regular person does! Prior to this, I exclusively did a Horse Stance (Ma Bu) whenever I'm crouching down to wash my hands or to look down at a 3rd floor mall balcony with only a glass barrier due to my paranoia of getting attacked, pushed over or getting my head unexpectedly bashed into a wall by someone! The problem with that is, people will look at me as a weirdo and/or perceive me as wanting to defecate. I currently fancy Tai Chi a lot and has really helped me in my daily environmental awareness. Thanks to you! The Cat Stance (Xu Bu) and the Rest Stance (Xie Bu) have became my standard resting stances that are less conspicuous to others. I hope these poor kids and people who simply slouch their upper backs down with legs completely straight looking down a dangerous balcony will at least gain awareness for their safety through martial arts and at least reap some fitness and cognizant benefits from performing these movements.

Janice..it's wonderful to see you place yourself perfectly in these stances.. ma bu very impressive and pu bu and of course xu bu with your hips lower than knees.. You are amazing!! I notice that most Taoist kung fu is also very low in the stances as well as with the basic Wushu postures. In Northern Shaolin we are actually taught to do these stances higher, and you can test the stance for power when hitting or kicking sandbags, or resisting force from various directions while maintaining the stance. Take gong bu for example.. If the stance is too low, there is a loss in striking power.. and also if the stance is too high there is also a loss of striking power. So you have to test the height of the stance while striking or kicking to see where the grounding gives way to more or less power or the grounding is unstable. Most of the super low stances within modern Wushu unfortunately hold little or no power for actual defense or attack though, but of course they are excellent for training flexibility and knee, calf, thigh, spine and overall body strength. And of course these low stances look amazing in traditional taolu. From practicing Shaolin stances it also gives me much better grounding while using Wing Chun stances which are higher and taller.. sometimes when sparring with other Wing Chun students I am not out of breath and its actually from doing the lower stances and deep breathing of the Shaolin Taolu, which gives me an edge over them. I would spar a marathon runner in class and often he would also be out of breath, so there is something to be said for the low stances and deep breathing, a form of yoga that traditional kung fu trains your body as you practice. Why anyone would give this vid a thumbs down is unbelievable.. they must not understand Chinese Wushu..You do a wonderful job showing these postures and describing what it takes to achieve them.
Sifu Hung, when going for a black sash of 2nd or 3rd degree, how long must you stay in the Cat Stance? I used to take My Jhong Law Horn, and to go to yellow sash we had to hold the Horse Stance for 2 minutes. Thank you for this tutorial. 😊
Fantastic stances tutorial. I might practice those stances even though am nowhere near as good as you. I wish you were my real life coach/instructor. It would be awesome to see video tutorials of you doing the Jumping Splits Kick, 720/900 degree Front leg sweep, and your signature 180 Stance.
Hi Josh Ideally knees shouldn’t go past over our toes but when we do mabu or any kinds of squats, our knees naturally extend out so just make sure you’re not extending it too much and you’re doing your best to sit back on your heels as if you were sitting down into a chair.
Love your video! It helped me a lot. I struggle with the drop pstance, any tips for that? I'm flexible but I don't have the strenght to get up from the stance haha. Lots of love x
Thank You Gowlian Janice

When you put all of the moves together at the end it makes a lot of sense. I can really see the defense aspect of Wushu.

Hi Janice when you go into Ma Bu where should your knees be? Should you make sure they don’t go over your toes like a proper squat?
