I use a G5 in my inner coat pocket for the same. It's receive capabilities on P25 are great like a dedicated commercial handheld but also the audio is nice and loud too so it's easier to hear off the speaker when needed, even on analog.
I *almost* got the G5, but almost everything I monitor around here is P25/800mhz, so I saved a few bucks I guess. It's the best handheld scanner I have, absolutely carry it in the truck all the time to monitor PD and Fire.
I have the G5 which includes VHF. Love them. Traded the SDS200 for it and only because I could use a base unit more then a portable I will find another SDS200 some day. But for a single system the G5 beats the SDS line of scanner
Freddie - The scanner (pager) doesn't affilate with a system. As long as the system of interest is not encrypted, it will receive just fine. For example, here the county sherriff and fire are not encrypted, so I can monitor (even though I'm out of the game). What I couldn't do (AFAIK) is buy a used P25 P2 radio, and monitor with it, because it will have to be affiliated to the system, meaning The Man has to approve it. What county are you in?
I don't know - the software is available at unication's web site for free. I suspect if your agency used these, your radio shop would program it, because it might need to be affiliated or a key installed.
Hey Don! - Radioreference.com. They are pretty much the authoritative database for this stuff. Back in the day it was the radio shack scanner books. There is much you can get free from them, with a sub, i can parse and pull state/county/city data in a very targeted manner.
Been wanting to get one to add to my scanner shack but I'm not proficient with computers,so setting it up for where i am (Los Angeles) would be extremely difficult for me. I'd love to see them come out with something like my SDS100.
Nice pager looks nice Thanks for the video for me it still doesn’t do everything a uniden sds 100 can do as far as customizing it and just more function but that’s just me
I have an SDS-100 and a 200. I like 'em all, but this one stays clipped on my sun visor in the truck, and won't kill my when it falls off. The SDS-100 has terrible battery life, and the G4 seems to have much better lifetime. Plus, the CPS is a lot more, sensible?, than the Uniden software. They're both great scanners.
Ok, in spite of having kc2wvb as an amateur license I am a casual amateur & I was under the impression that first responder networks were largely encrypted for obvious reasons. So, why were you so easily able to pick up clear audio messages being transmitted in the network? Just lucky in that your area is still using unencrypted data transmissions?
It just depends on the locality. Some are, some are not. Here, the sherriff and county fire are completely unencrypted. City PD is partial, and actually city fire is transitioning back to completely in the clear. The easiest way to determine what is listenable in your area is to look on radioreference.com.
I want one. When will Baofeng introduce their $25 version? Seriously though, these look pretty cool.
Never which is why I went to P25 HAME. Not compatible with CCRs so keeps the ghetto trash off.
Waiting for a P25 Baofeng radio that will cost like $30.00 LOL!! You know they will at some point.

Yes indeed, it's an awesome device. Mine stays with me in the truck.
I have a G5 and love it. I use it at work a lot because I can customize my scan list and I can't on my issued radio lol

Yup I got the unication g5 with vhf love them the best radio then any scanner out there
Great video Jeem!
Lol, Shane got me too, I just picked up a G5.

I'm probably going to sell my SDS-100. My 996P2 works fine at the house, and the size of the G4 is beyond perfect.
Thanks Jim, GREAT VIDEO!!! It's about time, Maybe Oklahoma will allow it on their system now.

Where do you get all the data you are filling in to those fields? Good video Jim. Thanks.

Oh, were you alerting Randy with the 3-2-1 before you started talking?🤔🤔🤔
Apparently, I missed that in post! And yes...I am my own Randy. You know how sketchy he is...
Will it receive further with a tiger tail?
🤣🤣🤣 technically yes it should if it’s the right length for the frequency.
@@JamesHannibalKH2SR I don’t know, JEEM says they’re a waste of time. 🤣
These things are awesome i own two versions
Will that radio receive encrypted comms?
It will - if you have the encryption key for whatever service you're wanting to monitor.

Setting this up is basically the same as the SDS-100. With a link to Radioreference, it's really straightforward.

Does it work with Win7?
OS/2
Windows 95
So can this be used as a police scanner ?
Pretty much yes. The model you get depends on your local system. And. hopefully it's not encrypted.
But, will it interface with a Flex Radio?
Nah, but it might work with Node Red!
Yep arrest them now
