Treedix Cable Tester - See inside that old USB cable!
Does the diamond 3000 have any downside compared to the 130?
That "I don't know what it is" is a capacitor. A.1mfd, 400 volt one according to 1 schematic I looked at. You'll need to see if you can find what series the meter is to get the exact manual and schematic.
Nice… but no anti-parallax mirror? Deal-breaker.
There are a few of these at the R&D Lab I used to work at. Didn't use them much, as we didn't keep them calibrated to standard, but they were good for some leakage current testing.
<worked for Rockwell International in Richardson Texas, Micro wave repair and cal department 1978. I've repaired a couple hundred of these. They would adopt Fluke DVM's during this time. And yes some high tech eq Scopes, Spectrum analyzers.. Micro wave link analyzers... All for production of a 1600 channel microwave system sold to Saudi Arabia. Old man now 72 Retired to Cambodia. What you have in your hand is indeed bakelite... and the meter is 1K ohm input impedance.
If I had room I would have a 260 on the shelf. I loved using one long ago but for my bench I opted for a Eico kit VTVM for the 11 MegOhm input impedance for better accuracy.
So cool retro old school meter.
The batteries are for the resistance ranges, the 9V for the high range and the other for the lower ranges. The output is for blocking DC in mixed voltage measurements i think. In my work I never used the meter that way for that purpose. The 500mA range is also labeled "transit" which puts a resistive load on the meter to help dampen the movement of the meter when transported, just for added protection. I had one of these meters for 32 years at my last job, even though I had newer meters, sometimes the non digital meter movement is very handy to have. I think you got a nice meter that will last you a long time!
Good to see that old girl in a video. It is the industry standard for analog meters. Probe Masters is the place to find probes. If the Ape is a real technician. He is probably sporting wood watching this. Hollywood is correct. That was a great buy. Lots of info on the net and UA-cam. That one is a keeper.
An analog VOM is indispensable in my book. The Simpson 260 is a classic! It is still in production!
I remember years ago when both Icom and Yaesu got bad batches of mic cables that eventually looked like the one in your video. The same thing happened to my FT-2800 mic cable. Since I now use it for packet/VARA I don't use the microphone anymore. 73 KD5YOU
Good find. Several of my fellow repeater techs are collectors, I'll share your video with them. Thanks and 73, Bill.
I scored one of these in great condition at an estate sale several months ago for the princely sum of $5. However, it doesn't appear to be working at all even with fresh batteries. I'm hoping I can get it going again but haven't yet made any attempts at it.
Probe Master for the probes. Not cheap but excellent probes. Which Series Simpson did you get. I think they go to 8. I like the ones with the mirror behind the scale to prevent parallex error. A good trick to check a meter at a sale to see if it works is to plug the positive probe into current socket and you should get a reading. Oh yea I have 2 of them. I also have a couple of Tripplet analog meters. Thanks for the video. 73
that screen needs dark mode 😃
I love the old tech (since I'm old) as well as the new stuff. That big thing is a capacitor because it's rated at 450VDC. Resistors power is listed as Watts, not voltage. Another great find!
👍👋
One of the BEST VOM's ever made! Every tech that ever had one, still uses it. (That includes me too!) I have 3 of them.
Hollywood got that 3 piece set!
I like it 👍
We need more digipeaters in AL. Good find
Hello, Astro is failing to read my XTS3000. im using an FTDI cable to convert 9pin to USB on win XP. Astro is recognizing the com port but is failing to read the radio. Any help would be much appreciated.
mini-DIN DATA Jack ... for ASFK
Yep - I haven't gotten to this yet, but I think I have the right cable.
@FEPLabsRadio , This measurement is not good done ... you cant measure such antenna when it is just 10 cm's parallel (horizontal) above a table ... cause that influences it , you basicly coupling it to the table (workbench) ... if you think but table is made of wood ... think again and understand that it is one big capacitor even while it's made of wood ... so you will get loses, reflections, capacity, detuning ...etc ... antenna is ment to be vertical , with a certain (much larger) distance to nearby objects in it's plane ... you have to measure it in the position it is ment to be used (vertical above a small metal case) ... one thing you could do is turn your analyzer screen facing to the ceiling (upwards) .. my verdict for this video ... not so good ... you never measure antennas when the are close and parallel to very nearby objects ... lets say you want to measure a 1/4 wave antenna ... have you ever seen they do that while the antenna is laying on the floor ?
Very nice find.
I thought the mic was toast when we tried it on my dummy load. Glad it all works. You scored some good stuff on that trip.
I don't know that it still isn't sketchy - it looks terrible, but I was able to key up, and I moved it around while testing - it never dropped.
Make a great APRS Digi/iGate rig!
The FT-1500 is a workhorse! You can't go wrong with that radio, especially for $20! Nice pickup. 73, KF4LMZ
Nice need to go to more ham fests
Score!👍
I need to get to a bigger hamfest!
I feel your pain. Montgomery's hamfest is small, and only about 6 hours on one day. I'll be going back to GA next year for sure.
Love that radio! Great price for it too! Easy to connect to digital, and really built well. I paid a lot more than $20 for mine, just a little TLC and you'll enjoy your workhouse too!
Great find Jim. I got mine for free. Did you get the mounting pieces? That's what the 2 holes in the the radio.
No mounts - just the radio/mic. I'll be putting it on the bench as a digipeater, I'm going to try and 3d print a mount to hook it on the pegboard.
Great find!
Nice find 👍
Well Jim at least you didn’t get the SHAFT 😂👋How you doing today 😎
Hanging in there like a hair on a biscuit!
You can get replacement cords for the microphone. I didn't find it hard to change mine.
Good to know. I’ve got a few of these kicking around - I’ll keep that in mind if I need one. This is destined to be a digipeater, so I'm not going to need a mic cable right now.
I love the FT-1500M (in fact I made a video a few years ago about why!). I have two of them. Done pretty much everything with 'em. Digipeater? Yes. APRS tracker in the car? You bet. FM simplex? Of course. Currently I have one as the TRX of my AllStarLink node. It is just unstoppable!
Dang, that's a cool idea - I hadn't thought about putting my Allstar node on it. Hmmmm....
@ it works great. It runs 5W all day and just does the job. (And wouldn’t need a VFO knob 😉)
Cool little radio!
Why get a new knob? You can use it now like when you used to use a pair of pliers to start your car. 😉
Well, duh! I got pliers!
I could Bluetooth it to my dash radio !
I might get one today from a guy here in MD but from doing research i thought they are receive ONLY so how can it affiliate if it can't transmit ?
I must be doing something wrong, but my ysf mode goes green when I boot up then goes back to red. Also didn’t work on pi-star so maybe something is wrong with my modem selection, using a Shari pi hat on a pi4 b if that helps.
there’s no way i’ve been watching reviews on the k5 pro and they ALL have the “exit” misspelled lol what were they doing
Do you know why the SWR appears low? They put a 52 ohm resistor in parallel at the feed point. Two parallel resistors will always read lower than the lowest resistance.
Looks pretty good to me. I ordered one the other day. Glad to see a clean Chinese HT. Third order harmonics are great. I tested one Chinese HT and the third order harmonic was only down 20 db. FAIL and yet still being sold in the US. WHY? Barry, KU3X
Right? Not like any of the vendors would actually check the products, or the FCC/FTC enforce any of their own regulations.
I got one just like this, I think got this and another one for like $5-$10 at a garage sale. They knew nothing about them, one the transistor on the back was blown, the other me and a friend troubleshooted and it had a fried regulator IC and that was tripping the crowbar circuit.
They are legion. I've seen them plenty at hamfests, yard sales, etc. If I can get one cheap (you scored!) repairing them is not usually too complicated.
Do you know how they accomplish this? There is a 52 ohm resistor in parallel at the input. Two resistors in parallel will always be lower than the lowest resistance. You could accomplish the same readings but putting a resistor in parallel with the Tram. SWR is no indication of efficiency, angle or much of anything else. A dummy load will give you a nearly perfect set from DC, well into the microwave band, but it's definitely not a good radiator. The same is true with this antenna. The 52 ohm resistor fools your meter into seeing a good match while the actual SWR may be higher than Willie Nelson on April 20th.
Thank you for this video. The company suggested this radio for my use when I reached out to them. Hoping you can help, I need a radio that is ip67, has usb C, DMR, encryption capable, multi-radio charge capable for “fleet” like usage, and GPS. Trying to find radios for a church security team and personal use. Currently we use Motorolas with two prong headsets so if possible would be nice if the headsets worked on the new radios but we can always switch to new wires if the radios can run to a listen only headset key up. Finally won’t break the bank since it’s for the church and for some of the guys who want their own. Appreciate your help.
Nice Power supply ! I have fixed many of them. Mostly Pyramid ones. Astron is higher quality. That one is quite old. They use good caps and still look good. Behind the pass transistor and before the transformer that is a Stud mount SCR . That is not ground on underside . That has a Mica washer under it. Ground is that little screw and connected to ground on power cord. you can test for that . Between the transformer the PC board. Their is a black pot with a wight wheel you can turn. That sets voltage . It is buy the LM723 reg IC. The 2 diodes for that supply are on PCB at end after transformer wires. They PC mount. On the transformer primary their is a RED MOV. That not a cap. It is a surge protector. MOV like GE V150LA20 or something like that. Sometimes V130LA10 or LA20 is used. To read the part number on MOV RED ones. IS V is max voltage. 130/150 volts. AFTER the LA is ebergany level in Jules . 1 to 20 in disk type. They only go bad if hit with a voltage spike. May diss color or test short but remove 1 lead from transformer to test . Them screws on main cap. The biggest one. Sometimes they come loose. just check them. Normally #10-32 fine screw with star washer . That like a 3 AMP SB fuse or so. it is 1/4 in dia glass type bot can use cerminac 3AB type they just 250VAC . Just do not use 32V fuse. 125VAC 3AG type. That metal on transistor 2N3771 is the collector and input voltage to reg. You can put fan on heat sink if using heavy loads . LOL 7A I have the RS 50A and a RS 70M and has BIG heatsinks . I put 120VAC 120MM fans on them. Nice to have to power small stuff. It has current limit. No melting wire . 73
Hey Robert, yeah after I recorded that, i realized what that was. Mouth was moving faster than the brain.
Good video Jim! I was at the Stone Mountain Hamfest on Saturday for the 50th consecutive time! I bought a similar TrippLite power supply about a decade ago in the bone yard there which I used for my VHF/UHF rigs in the shack for most of that time. It died recently and I have to get it on the bench this winter and see if I can fix it. Thanks for coming to the Hamfest. I have been a Ham since a Novice at 14 and am now 77 years old. Greatest Hobby in the world. Hope to see you again next year there. 73
I take a couple where do I order from.
