ICOM M17 Radio - wait what??
In this video, let's put together the M17 Module board, and connect up an old ICOM IC-5061D radio, so we can do M17 digital voice over a hotspot. The radio originally did NXDN(IDAS/NexEdge), and still will, but we're gonna hot wire up some new capability! I got this board from Doc Brad, and I want to put it to good use!

I was one of the testers that contacted Retevis and they told me to send the prototype to them and they would send me a working model. Guess what they never sent me anything back after I paid to send the testing model back to them. How dirty of a company.
Amazing how your review is much different than what is produced by the pay-for-review youtubers. Thank you for having integrity and actually knowing what you are talking about.
I would like to see the ipad version. This looks awesome to play with.
Can this thing affiliate and get bricked ?
I need one of those pagers I Also live in Montgomery county MD lol
So can this be used as a police scanner ?
Dang, that's just weird. I haven't used mobile AM CB since the mid 80's so I had no idea also. Lol I have a number of FM HT CB's though. 477MHz and want an external antenna on my SUV. Fun times ahead. :)
Nice Jeem, but I can't keep up with all the HAM rabbit holes. Lol
Late view of this one. When looking at the trunked systems and you see all the site frequencies in red, indicating a control channel, that indicates this is not a Motorola system, but a Harris system. The older Harris EDACS systems required all frequencies for a site, in proper order (referred to as logical channel number, or LCN). Radio Reference used to put a tiny number in the corner of each cell in the frequency table indicating the LCN, but I don’t think they do that anymore unless it’s required. Anyway, this is a direct result of migration of EDACS technology to P25 and having to use all channel frequencies has stuck around. No Harris systems in my area so I can’t confirm this, but I believe that having the frequencies in the correct LCN is no longer required. Hope that helps!
I can confirm, RR doesn't mention any specific order for P25 (at least my local systems). They basically mark every channel as the control channel.
I am a student pilot and I need an inexpensive radio to listen to the airband, is the Talkpod A36 Plus a good option for me? Thank you.
Hey Jose! I am actually a pilot myself. IMO, no. For several reasons. Most importantly, it's not tied in to your headset, so it will be very hard to hear. I also think (IMO) that you have better situational awareness while flying. If you're talkin about on the ground, then if it recieves air band, sure it will be fine. Depending on where you live, it will be hard to scan tower, approach(es), ground, and/or clearance delivery. Just kind of depends on how big your local airport is. Good luck getting your ticket!
Is it a cost problem for those companies to fix it, or why are those radios always failing the FCC test? This is not the first time somebody noticed this issue with Chinese radios.
Roger, IMO, because the companies don't care, the FCC doesn't care, and honestly, a lot of hams just don't care. That's the short version.
You can actually use that cable but you need to update the port settings on Windows 11.
Secret feature ??, Hidden, not a word about anything like that......
So what does it all mean? Im just getting in to it
Nice video! M17 is definitely gaining traction especially in the digital world!
I don't like that long wires that can pick up rf. I will put clip chokes. I also try to use analog instruments
Vk3jed is tony, who operates one of the reflectors for m17.
Yes! I actually have seen his call and talked to Tony in the M17 discord. We debugged that issue the other night, he was unaware of it. I say we debugged...he debugged, I just told him and showed him what was happening. He's way smarter than me.
@@FEPLabsRadio Tony is absolutely everywhere haha, from Linux development to M17 to the repeaters in Bendigo, Australia 😂
Wait till we release Micro17 running OpenRTX :)
ME WANT!
Fine business, Jim.
There's a VK3JED youtube video on M17. Maybe that will explain why he keeps coming up.
You can type "clear" to clear the screen in Linux. Just FYI, great channel.
Yes , but I can also just whack enter without moving my fingers around....
My only issue with this M17 board is that it's essentially just an analogue bridge. Think of it like allstar, so on the M17 side of things there's a high chance of distorted analogue audio, and when that then gets transcoded into M17 it's going to sound awful. A similar approach to using Tetra has been used for svxlink, and it suffers badly from distorted analogue input... Just my 2 cents...
It's a modem - what else should it do? Or what/how it could do better?
I'm pretty sure most of my audio issues is with the 3$ baofeng squeaker mic. I need to add a speaker jack to the board for full frontal clarity.
@@batoniarz OK out of the other digital voice modes that have been adopted into amateur radio... dstar, c4fm, nxdn, p25, dmr of those what one do you access them natively with FM? None, so that's what I mean. Yes doing it this way makes it quicker to access the M17 network, but M17 is claiming to be a opensource digital mode but due to the lack of a physical radio that can transmit the digital M17 (yes I'm aware of the mods to MD-380 dmr radios) Now do I have the solution to what I mentioned, no I don't. The only way I can access M17 is via droidstar and audio on that can be pretty dodgy at times too! I'm not saying that M17 is a waste of time, no absolutely not, as I run a M17 reflector!
@@ScottEvans-vk7hse but the modem makes the radio transmit and receive M17 over RF.
Thank you Jim. Have have the M17 board and using the FTM-6000, just like TO used on the live stream. My BER was zero, but I am using a UHF frequency, and turned the radio to 5 watts. I agree, the Baofeng Speaker/Mic is a limitation. I had very low audio. I am happy to have the M17 board, and make it all work, but I find that MVoice on a PI or running on Linux Mint to be better, at the moment. It is fun to play and experiment, and I look forward to growing with this protocol as they progress, 73,
Still some room for improvement :)
Mvoice is definitely a better solution imo, at least until the board becomes more mature.
My theory on the poor BER is that your TX level from the module (adjustable by the multi-turn trimmer pot) is too hot, and clipping the baseband input of the radio. But until you throw that signal onto a scope, it's hard to tell. Plus the level the radio wants to see might be a challenge to find - not all radios like 1Vp-p levels. But it'd be interesting to see the radio-in and radio-out signals on a scope anyway - and since they're on your DE-9 connector - they're super easy to get to.
That sounds like a follow up video! It's reliably tripping the hotspot, and I have not messed with the trimmers on the board, so that might be it.
Thanks Jim, great job.
Jim, looks like the M17 signal is a little "hot" compared to the NXDN signal. Might be causing the BER. Was this testing done thru some attenuators, or can you somehow dial down the RF output power. :)
The antenna for the Icom was outside, and it's set on 1W (It only goes to 5W). Maybe if I moved the hotspot to the other end of the house.
Way to Go Big Jeem !! -Doc Brad
You definitely have more patients than I do. I would have either walked away or opened the door and airmailed the radio and M-17 board into the pasture behind my house.
It became a serious challenge. I think that at this point the radio is still tooo hot for the M17 board/vice versa. On NXDN mode, it does work fine at 1W with the exact same hotspot hardware.
🍺🍺😎👋Jim , how’s it keeping
Awesome video... Thank you!
Hi , I'm Taner Schenker (DB1NTO, founder of PicoAPRS). The TX audio should be also very clear! Maybe you have a faulty unit!
Hey Taner! First of all, thanks for watching, and secondly, the Pico is freakin awesome! Probably overdriven a bit as I was testing in the house, using an FT5D on low power, so I wasn't completely surprised. Also, what came out on the video audio was most likely just the way the mic picked up the recieved audio. I'll revisit that and let you know. I found mine on ebay, and other than possible rx audio issues, I have no complaints. I didn't buy it to be a tiny HT, I bought it for the APRS functionality, so in the end - very satisfied! I will try and hit a local repeater and see if that makes a difference.
@@FEPLabsRadio Hi, maybe your speaker is broken! Can you please contact Wimo support and DXE to see if they can send you a new speaker? DXE should already have some replacement speakers from Wimo. If you have any problems with this, please let me know! I will help you get a new speaker (free of charge).
Gee, why does it use pi-star and raspberry as the default user name and password? Just like Pi-Star?
So people have one less username and password to remember.
@FEPLabsRadio yea it builds off the back of Pi-Star and if you ask any questions his accolights don't like they boot you. Anything they think hints about Pi-star they boot you. I won't use it again.
thx, its really cool, when you can see GHz.
The thought of getting a cordless screwdriver crossed my mind but I've been using a DeWalt impact driver as an electric screwdriver, and for the size of screws I'm working with it's very effective. It can thread in a small screw gently (I like to hand torque everything), and it has massive power for removing even the most stubborn screws. The downside is it's pretty big if all you want is a screwdriver. A little driver like the Kaiweets is probably intended for working on phones, not carburetors and stuff like I work on.
Does it do a good job of determining a gas station usb cable? Cheap device for all the functionality it has. Thanks for the video Jim! 73
HA! It will tell you that gas station cable ain't got no data line. That's a win, son!
I wonder if they have a set of grinder bits to clear plastic holes…
I think it's a standard size shank - probably can find one. None came with it.
I have a set similar. The screwdriver doesn't have a lot of torque. I keep a dremel electric screw driver around when I need some extended torque. Thanks for the video! 73
Yeah, that's the only downside to the kit - but it's handy to keep in a desk drawer for electronic fiddling. It ain't gonna help drop a tranny out of a 69 Camaro.
I'm more triggered by YT channels that get cats sent to them free for review.... LOL!
That must be interesting!🤣🤣🤣

Tommy, low power is all you need to hit the hotspot in the house.
Thank you UA-cam algorithm! Immediately bought this to test my box of cables.... (~100) Do you happen to know of a DP or HDMI testers as well??
No, I don't, that might be a handy thing for sure. I have so many usb cables, it NEVER fails, I'll grab one that is power only, then I spend time trying to figure out why my gadget won't gadget...I'm planning on sitting in front of the TV with the old lady, and going thru every USB cable I have, and chucking out the power only ones. Or, at least sticking them in a separate box at the back of the closet... Thanks for watching!
Does anyone know when this radio will be back in stock? I passed my Technician exam a little over a month ago and got in on the jumpstart thing too. The radio wasn’t free, but it was a significant discount. I believe it’s a bundle package with the data cable, software, and I think I added an external mic and my call sign. Anyway, I’ve emailed and called, no word on when they’ll be back in stock. I believe I was told “Hopefully in the next 30 days” both times.

I'm curious how gas station USB cables would do with this tester.
Did you take this down to the gas station to test their cables?
Hell yes, Before I spend 1.99 on "HI PWOER UBS CABLE"

I don't know - I've not had the 1701. It should be in the neighborhood. Most of these things are pretty close in the way they set up, so on any of my videos, the same pieces are there, just not specifically in the same place.
