There is a book by Daniel Kahneman called thinking fast and slow. There are some really interesting takeways directly applicable to improvisation. Basically the analytical part of our brains can't really be engaged while improvising. The intuitive part (what he calls system1) needs to be engaged which allows us to be in what he calls "flow state". Ofcourse this means that, in order to practice improvisation itself, we need to train that intuitive part which means slowing things down and practicing isolated parts (technique, fretboard vis, harmony etc) within constraints and engaging the slow but more analytical part of the brain until it becomes second nature. I highly recommend reading that book.
i've been playing timed chess to improve my mental speed, but now when i play guitar i just keep getting distracted by visualising a beautifully set up fork attack to take their queen while putting them in check... people often don't seem to effectively take note of all the possible spaces a knight can attack a move or two ahead!
That's why they got a knighthood, from the Queen, or these days, the King. Recognition of their bad ass L-shape hipness.

In order to improvise you need to have burnt in your head how certain intervals sound in relation to your chord/root.
It basically eliminates preprocessing and you can go straight to scales/sonorities because you have them in your head. Not in your hands and this is a massive difference

Outside of the deliberate mistakes, the second solo sounded good because of the breathing room. The first solo had good note choice, and solid licks, but literally zero space.

I love improving myself but when I do get stuck ill do one of 2 things either find a way to end the solo or I just bend out a note or hammer a note to death until I figure out what I wanna do next usually it works haha
