I've wanted to get a tortoise for years now, and I'm finally looking at my options. I currently live in Utah where it is very dry and goes from 100 degree weather to below freezing throughout the year. This video was really helpful!!

Thank you so much for your videos I’m always learning something new from them. I live in England and have a female Mediterranean spur and a male Herman’s tortoise. I have had them both for 50 years. The female pretty much does her own thing but the male is the sweetest little animal I have ever owned.He will come and sit on my foot and in his own wayask to be plcked up by raising one leg in the air, he likes nothing more than cuddling into the side of my neck and going to sleep.I’m sure this isn’t normal tortoise behaviour but he enjoys it,and I’m a soft touch and can’t refuse him !!

The other am I woke up to a large box turtle climbing across my back..first I thought it was Rodger, my rabbit thinks he’s a dog, but when I reached back to pet him and felt the leg I wasn’t even scared. One had gotten out of his box. I tell people don’t b alarmed in here bc I have a coon that comes in every afternoon to get cat food. I saw one baby. She snatched him up so fast and shoved him above the carport ceiling. Ramona is very smart.

I'm the dad of a juvenile marginated (only about 3-4 inches long right now) and he really is a treat. Confident, sociable, and fast! When i take him to the park he runs and eats like there's no tomorrow. He's a real treat

The Russian tortoises also have quite a personalty. Had 4 of them and they all had a different personalty type😊 Also had one Herman tortoise (the first in this video), thought it was a marginated as well, but I can see you say it’s different in this video, but it was so sweet with a personalty as well😊 Finally found your site, maybe you should list it under the description. Is there a point on Russians tortoises (would be so nice, because I can’t find it), even though I can see, you note them under Herman’s in the video😊 It’s sometimes hard to find ecsactly something on them, and it’s acsurely kind of weird, because so many of us have them in captivity. As for substrate and lightning in captivity, hope you would maybe make a video about maybe each of them in captivity, and also how to make sure there doesn’t come all different kind of bugs in the substrate, if it is possible to do that. That is the reason why, when I tried it, I took it away, because if you don’t have a big room for that alone like yours, then how to do this? Thank you for making video’s on Russians as well, because have followed many of your other video’s😊👏

I had a Texas Gopher tortoise for 20 years. Easiest animal I ever kept. She roamed the house in winter, and the garden in summer. Would eat almost anything, including Xmas tree tinsel. Sometimes I would not see her for a couple weeks, then she would crawl out from under the sofa or refrigerator to get some food. Loved having her neck and chin rubbed.
Hi Chris! Thank you for making this video! I did not know a lot of this info. I hope you can make a video that speaks about five advanced tortoise to have. I got an Indian star for my first tortoise and it is definitely a challenge because it does not grow fast, its good at hiding and it cannot be out doors un supervised but I pay attention to it every day. How do you manage your dogs with your tortoises?
Thanks Max! We will definitely do that, although we do keep our Indian stars outside here as well. The dogs are trained from the second they arrive to love and protect the tortoises. It’s all about desensitizing them as young as 8 weeks of age. The only time we ever had an issue with a dog was one we rescued 15 or so years ago. He was already 2 years old and had no clue what they were and didn’t understand.

Some winters we get -15 which I have often thought might be too cold for them. Are you saying that those are acceptable winter temps? I have a large pen outdoors planned and it would be great to house them all year outside.

I currently have a female Russian and she has such a personality and us shockingly smart for a little tort. I used to work with both a redfoot tortoise and a Greek tortoise for my educational program and I honestly prefer my Russians personality.
I have a Hermann's tortoise two years old ..thing is I live in the UK so don't feel safe to keep him outside all year round but he has a six foot enclosure outside for warmer days . I'm looking into cold frames as I know he loves being out in the fresh air and we do get some nice summers

Chris, I was just talking to someone yesterday about Russian tortoises and Western Hermanns tortoises. I have never kept tortoises in my years of turtle keeping but I have been highly drawn into starting up and getting some western Hermanns tortoises. I would love to be able to see a video of the care for the hatchlings. Do you think even in winters here in Minnesota they would fair?
If I get a baby leopard tortoise how long would it be before they get too big for those 3 room enclosures? I would want him or her to have more space than they need so I’m wondering if I should start off with a very big enclosure or if I should start them with one of the 3 room enclosures and work on something bigger over time. Any tips would be very appreciated!
Crazy that america still imports some of these. Here in germany where I live, they are highly regulated. You only can buy captive bred ones which are kinda expensive (honestly, with animals thats kinda a good thing cause it prevents spontanious buying). And when you buy a bred one, it has to have documents which involves pictures of the shell markings (each has different markings like a fingerprint) so you cant slap the documents onto a different tortoise.
My dog found a tortoise in our backyard while we were gardening. My dog kept barking and barking, I just thought he wanted to go inside. I think its a Texas tortoise or so the neighbor told me. By the way your little girl is adorable.

I had gopher tortoises when I lived in the Mohave desert. I would release them as fall, what there was of it, came upon Us. My largest “Cactus” actually returned after winters. This was in the 60’s and I was young. I would release them from their enclosure just by opening the door. They usually headed for the marigold beds to eat. They also were given fresh veggies too. Cactus would head for the front door which would be opened so Cactus could come in and eat wet and dry cat food. They allowed Our chuckwalla’s to sun themselves on their backs and were very docile and even friendly. Cactus would follow You around when they ate all they wanted. I guess they knew they had it good because they didn’t try to leave. I was sad to leave them when We moved but it was best for them. I still love tortoises.

They definitely should do well. It’s all about protecting them from dangerous dry temps in winter and that’s where the cold frames come in handy.

I had gopher tortoises when I lived in the Mohave desert. I would release them as fall, what there was of it, came upon Us. My largest “Cactus” actually returned after winters. This was in the 60’s and I was young. I would release them from their enclosure just by opening the door. They usually headed for the marigold beds to eat. They also were given fresh veggies too. Cactus would head for the front door which would be opened so Cactus could come in and eat wet and dry cat food. They allowed Our chuckwalla’s to sun themselves on their backs and were very docile and even friendly. Cactus would follow You around when they ate all they wanted. I guess they knew they had it good because they didn’t try to leave. I was sad to leave them when We moved but it was best for them. I still love tortoises.
