Last year I visited the Butterfly Garden on Vancouver Island, and in an enclosure was a group of red footed tortoises. I sat down on the edge of their enclosure and they all ambled over to say “hello!” I stroked and scratched their shells, and some even stretched out their necks and accepted neck “rubs.” They were curious and friendly and never tried to bite.
They are an extension of your legacy. It is cool to own one. Especially if it’s a Galapagos Tortoise. Smaller fellas are too adorable to not care for. If you’re worried about longevity then a a yellow chicken turtle would be a nice choice since their lifespan is usually 30yrs.
Love my Redfoot and Cherry head, they do great outside in the summer.(Also in NJ) They love occasional meat treats chicken and even fish they go crazy for it. Can you make a video on building or getting indoor enclosures for bigger Redfoots ? One of mine has outgrown his old tortoise house he uses for the winter. Thanks for the video
Love this! Great video! I'd love to see more species specific videos on the more common/popular tortoises. I get asked a lot what species are easiest to keep and are also very interactive. This will be a great reference video to send people to. (Side note - Casey, buy Chris more teal shirts! His eyes looked great with the teal indoors!)
It's interesting how the red foot's act more like predators in movement. What pretty hatchling's they are! I liked the shot where the little one was really thinking about climbing the tree bark. Such ambition! Someday, someday. Great video as always.
Red-footed tortoises are my favorite. 🥰 I never thought I'd get a turtle or tortoise, because of how long-lived they are. I didn't want something I'd have to put in my will. But then I watched a pair of hatchling red-foots for a week, and fell in love. A few months later I got one of my own, and she (I think it's a she) is the best! She's a little over a year old and very personable. Always comes to the front of the enclosure when I come in the room.
Your videos are always so entertaining and informative. I would love to see another video on the Greek Spur Thigh. I am a senior who took over his care from my Grandaughter, and I am obsessed with him. We live in IL and I am worried he won't get enough exercise in the winter. He is so used to crawling over large areas in the summer months.
Great video on red footed tortoises. I rescued a young male red footed tortoise back in 2008 from a terrible living situation. They do require a lot of space and are a fairly active tortoise.
Great video as always! Love Redfoots! We currently have 5 and they are all very personable. How about a video on Softshell Turtles we currently have 2 Florida softies and occassionally work with native eastern spiny. Thanks again for all the work you and Casey do! Also, great seeing you two on the wild times podcast!🐢🔥
He's like "why is this bloody camera following me everywhere?" 😂 I hadn't seen or heard of the red-footed tortoise before, truly remarkable. Thanks for the great insight GST. Curious, why do they bop their heads like that? Looks like they're dancing to music only they can hear
I like the species-specific information! Redfoots look like very interesting tortoises. I hope you will make more videos about Egyptian tortoises in the future, as they are less common, and there are not so many videos about them. I have one and he is amazing!
I'd love all the species specific videos. Maybe do a series about all of your 'most endangered' or most popular pet series. Interesting to know what other turtles and tortoises are alike and how they differ.
I LOVE turtles and my daughter surprised me last fall with a small red eared slider! I love watching him and enjoy feeding him ..he eats right outta my hand. Hes so alert and active and enjoys climbing the little tree in his aquarium.. I let him out of his aquarium to walk freely a few times a week. A wonderful creature reminding me of how awesome all living creatures are!!!!
I've had a slider for going on twenty years now. She is always begging for food lol. It is a pain to keep her tank clean though and I need to upgrade her to a bigger one again. She's in a 75 gal atm but she's about 11in long. It's recommended to be about 10 gallons per 1 inch of turtle.

I have yo say that Red Foot are native in Venezuela. You name Guyana that is actually part still of Venezuela but it’s more in the country. I have a beach house full of red foot tortoise ❤❤❤
I have a 23 yr old Red foot who during the summer lives in a large 12 ‘ x 40 ‘ fenced in enclosure - I would love some ideas on how to build a soak pond for her . at the moment I use a tray that was the bottom peice of a bird cage but its not ideal . My concern about the soak pond is how do I clean it so that mosquitoes dont breed in it ?
What about getting a small "fish" pond from Lowes or home depot ? I've seen 2ft in size at the store. I don't have outdoor Enclosure or I'd get one. . Cleaning it though would be hard.
@@itsmelili326 I have thought of that but the slope is too steep . There has to be a gentle slope for her to climb down - like a beach not a cliff . Thanks for the suggestion though and if you can think of any other ideas let me know .
One way to prevent mosquitoes is to put a little fountain pump in it. They can't lay in moving water. There are inexpensive solar powered ones made for birdbaths that can stick to the bottom or float.
i love my redfoot so much!! she is so small but mighty! thanks for the spotlight on her species. She actually carried eggs and I tried to make an environment for her to lay. Instead of laying them she absorbed them!! they were present on the ultrasound and I came back after a month and in the xray they were gone!! I am going to try again next time around for a comfortable play to lay.
Hi, our red foot is about a year and a half. She won't eat worms, slugs, bugs but she loves chicken, mango, shrimp and bananas. Why do her front legs seem to move when she's just sitting there, almost like she's heavy breathing? Especially when we start talking to her in her tank? Are there behavior traits or communication signals anyone has picked up from theirs?
That’s just how they pump air to breathe with their legs. And when you come close they do it faster since they smell you. Just like how you would when you smell a scent you breathe in heavier to smell what it is. Hope that made sense
I love my little red foot, he’s a yr old now and the best purchase I’ve ever made. I would love to get one from garden state tortoises one day if they ever have any available. Been watching the Chanel for years now.
I shifted to taking care of Redfoots and Cherryheads during the pandemic. I love them to bits! 😍 Can you do a more detailed video of the different locales of Redfoots? Thanks so much! Great job! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Don’t forget to always use turtle safe water conditioner to treat your water before adding to your turtle and tortoise enclosure. For humidity and for drinking.
Currently raising a 1 year old Redfoot, and gosh, this little one really had a brave character! So easy to take care of! I also agree with some in the comments that asking for a softshell turtle video? I know you mostly nurture tortoises, but.. yeah, maybe? Thank you!
We have had a red-foot tortoise for about a year. She just walked in our front yard and we found her under a pile of leaves. We thought it was a snake but it was a red foot so you can imagine our surprise when we saw her. Somebody probably abandoned her. I calculated that she is around 3 1/2 to 4 years of age. She is medium-sized but still very manageable. I keep her indoors at night in a reptile tank with mulch substrate, a shelter to sleep, and a clay plate of water. I keep it warm all night with a thermic device I put under the tank. During the day (especially now in spring and summer) she spends all day in an outdoor encasement I made for her where she can walk, rummage, and go into a big clay plate with water. We live in San Antonio Texas so it can get pretty hot during the summer and sometimes we have sub-zero temps during the winter. I'm not sure if I can leave her outdoors all night. I'm concerned about the wildlife we have here. Raccoons, possums, sometimes foxes, deer, and stray cats. Could they harm her? Can a tortoise of that age (3-4 y/o) stay outdoors permanently if weather permits? Should I put her inside if it gets hotter than 95F? I'm putting more plants inside her encasement to provide her with more shade and I try to keep the encasement wet with the water hose a few times a day. She is very pretty and a great eater. Sincerely I'm learning how to take care of a tortoise because she just got into our lives out of the blue and probably will outlive us all😁🐢
A few years ago, a red footed tortoise just showed up in our south Jersey backyard, we found him eating cat food we leave out for a feral. I thought he was some huge mutant box turtle - who would think an exotic species would just wander into your yard? Either someone dumped him, or he escaped from an outside enclosure. He ate all the cat food, and we put out some more, which he also ate, then he spent the night in our flower bed. The next day I showed a picture of him to my brother, who identified him as a red foot, and I rushed home, hoping he was still snoozing in the garden, and thank goodness he was. I called a few turtle people in the area, but got the impression from some that if they took him, he might then get sold. I contacted Garden State Tortoise and Chris agreed to give him a home. My niece and I took the 40 minute drive to drop him off and asked Chris if we could see a little of the place when we got there. I don’t think it is open to the public, but Chris was so nice and so gracious and showed us around. It was such a relief to know the tortoise would be living in what is pretty much tortoise heaven, and that he would have other tortoises of his species around, and someone knowledgeable, and responsible, to look out for him. I hope he is doing well. Thanks so much, Chris, for all you do!

What about air holes?
If I have a yard, absolutely I adopt red foot.
Humidity DOESN'T cause the shell to go like lego, that's a lack of calcium and vitamin D 😅
Umm no buddy, as we’ve stated in countless videos, what your claiming is completely outdated, inaccurate information. Sorry! 👍🏻

Hi Chris, do you use the same tote setup for Hermann’s?
How much of the year can these guys live outside in central Florida? I feel like you are more measured in tortoises' ability to bury themselves and survive some cold, while everything I see says to pull them inside if it is under 50-60. Here in FL we only get a few cold snaps but I would like a tortoise that can live outside year round unless it is a highly unusual freeze.
