    Would had been so much more appropriate if they made the mod button the "FUN" button. :)

    After changing the frequency range were you able to program through the software. Did the radio then have GMRS freq, 2m and 70cm?

      YES!!! I use it for GMRS now but it does do 2meter and 70cm Band

    Doesn't work *until* you access the firmware in two places. If you miss the second one it will tune to GMRS frequencies but refuse to transmit. I have gone over the CPS with a fine tooth comb, there is no setting to release TX inhibit on GMRS channels.
    I just saved a little of my money on two of these, we'll see how 18 watts runs in my vehicle when the antennas come in from BTech.

      @@HamRadioCrusader Firmware is 3.00.
      I did some digging around on the web and couldn't find any way to downgrade it. I looked through the software to no avail. I tried several key combos to maybe find another hidden startup menu. When I held down mon + fun and turned on the radio, the screen and keys flashed instead of the red light flashing. The firmware updater said it couldn't find the radio. I still have the VHF and UHF capability plus RX only on GMRS.
      It's very possible there's a workaround I haven't found. If there is, I'm more than happy to try it.
      The second one has not arrived yet, it may have an earlier firmware (I hope so!). At the very least they can be saved for when I build a shack at home.

      @@HamRadioCrusader I've found the issue and also how dealers get around the GMRS rule regarding VFO mode. There's another program I call Set O floating around. I couldn't find it online but I had it lying around from some 868 series radios I hacked the sense out of (they're all on par with the 878UV2 now except a 6x2 classic that can hold its own).

      @@noname47032 So if the radio is firmware 3.00 it can't be mod to tx on frs/gmrs? I am interested in getting one of these AT-779uv's if it can work on the 22 frs/gmrs channels. How can I tell the firmware version before buying it? Thanks for the info. This gmrs mod stuff is all new to me.

    • @noname47032
      @noname47032 3 місяці тому +1

      It can be modded even on 3.0, there's just an extra step in there. You have to access another menu through Windows and uncheck the "Frequency Set" box, then write that to the radio. It locks up the on screen menu on the radio to whatever frequencies are set in the Windows program. You can change both from GMRS to ham and back, thus locking out VFO mode and the boot up menu for legal GMRS use. There are other options in there, too. You may well find what you need.
      The program is called SetO and includes the model number if the radio.
      I just got two brand new ham units, both were on firmware 3.0. I needed GMRS radios and they work for that, plus with non GMRS frequencies blocked from the CPS and the front panel during conversion to GMRS the Part 95e certification is valid.
      There is no way to lower the output power to less than 4 watts, though, which means staying on channels 1-7 and 15-22 or using it with a repeater.
      I can't answer to question of "can it be set up on GMRS and ham at the same time". Just keep in mind this isn't the only way one can set the AT-779UV up, there are several choices in the boot up menu and in the Set O program, based on what I saw, though, you will find the setup you need.

    It's not really a "mod" if you're just accessing a hidden menu...
