To quote from the Forgotten Realms fandom page for Lamia: "Most lamias appeared to be beautiful women from the waist up but had the bodies of powerful lions from the waist down. However, these were the weakest forms of lamia. Lamia nobles had the lower bodies of serpents, which often led to them being confused with naga or medusas. The most powerful of lamias could change their lower bodies as easily as a mortal being changed their clothes."

Actually though most commonly _lamiai_ are shown with snake bodies, it's not uncommon (specially in Medieval art) to have them have many others creatures as their bodies. The DND version follows the lion ones.

D&D already has snake people in the Yuan-Ti. Sphinxes also exist in the form they are classically depicted. My guess the lion-centaur lamias are there to avoid confusion for theater-of-the-mind (no figures) play when describing them.

drakelord56 I presume that is also the reason why “Medusa” is a species, while “Gorgon” is a type of living iron bull.

@@chrisschoenthaler5184 Wait, what? Why the heck is that a Gorgon? I just looked it up. Seriously, what the heck? Just why? There's already a name for the species they call Medusa, it's "Gorgon" and "Medusa" was the name of an individual. Why don't they make up a name for the Iron Bull thing. Why call it a Gorgon?
The Lamia thing was already weird, but at least it was still a beast-hybrid with the upper body of a woman. The Gorgon being an Iron Bull however just confuses me.

Most of Acererak's dungeons contain traps to punish overly curious/reckless players. This is a good example. Same with the mouth of the original tomb of horrors. Just don't stick your head in it and you're fine. But no, people are curious, jump through it and vanish (partly), dying instantly.

Long story short, there was an old English manual of myths that mixed up the names of snake women and a lion woman. Ever since then, D&D has kept the weird names since the first edition.

The lamia was originally described a beastly creature that was once a beautiful women loved by zeus. Later depictions described her as snake like, some described as dragon like, and some made her an amalgamation of various creatures. But the original writer of the first mentioning of her never really specified what she looked like beyond being beastly. It’s just that the snake form is the most common. But the one in this is also a form described by some, but very rarely. It is distinctly different from a sphinx in that Lamia’s always are bloodthirsty, beastly in appearance, and lustful, where as the sphinx is described as fearsomely regal, wise, and dangerous.

(So basically Egypt, India, and China mostly.)

Someone already mentioned it, but Lamia, at least in D&D, have the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a lion, though older editions did have greater lamia with the lower body of a snake.
Also of note, they are actually one of four pin based creatures. Lamia are basically lion centaur. A sphinx has the body of a winged lion and the head of a man, though female versions are not unheard of. This is the typical puzzle loving mythological creature you have heard of.
Next is the manticore, which is lion-like with a human-like face and a spiked tale and hat-like wings. Very ferocious.
Finally there is the Lammasu, with the body of a lion and the face of a human. These are lawful good creatures that love nothing more than gaining knowledge and conversing with good creatures.

In earlier editions it was a monster/npc exclusive spell for the DM to give the party a chance to be evil/be (hopefully softly) railroaded.

3:21 Let it never be stated that some of the people Puffin play with are any smarter then him.
3:55 Well no, there are two types of Lamia. One is the snake body and the other has a lion. Unfortunately off the top of my head I can't remember which is the Sumerian Lamia and which is the Hebrew Lamia. It's been years since I handled those mythologies.
I just want to point out that the Tomb of the Nine Gods part of the video is the 'meat grinder' style of D&D i was talking about in a previous video. It can be fun, but just don't get attached to characters or builds.
24:12 It's not really a waste depending on the player's point of view. Don't forget this is advancing a D&D character one whole level without any risk of losing them. So while yes they could spend that down time to learn some additional skill or something like that. However levelling up will get them access to abilities, spells or states they really want. Which in some cases can drastically change their style of play. Take a Paladin for example. Getting to level 5 means they can find a steed. This drastically changes their play style and can be greatly beneficial depending on how they want to play the class.
24:36 No its not useless. This is another case of Puffin being oblivious to something and thus acting like its trash. Although I'm not going to explain its benefits like I usually would. Instead I'm going to twist your arm a bit and point you in the direction of Zee Bashew's UA-cam channel. I've mentioned him in the past, but I'll state again that he does better animated D&D content. Mostly the animated spell book series that breaks down abilities, spells, skills and even items from the game. However he also does odd videos on other topics. Like the Honour score system. (Which is interchangeable with Renown). Here is the link to that video. - ua-cam.com/video/Wjbna_5eL6s/v-deo.html
