@@kristend344You seem confused. The lawsuit isn't going to about about how she could've avoided injury. The problem here is that the hospital was negligent in performing proper assessment to determine the best course of treatment (anyone with common sense would've recommended a CT scan). That is absolutely grounds for a lawsuit.

It took me 11 visits to Kaiser Urgent Care before they did a CT Scan and diagnosed me with colitis. I kept getting doctors that weren't taking me seriously. Finally on the last day I was there during the shift change. Explained everything to the new doctor and he put in the order. Came back with the results and said "I'm glad we did that ct scan". I was like "FINALLY!"

Are there better hospitals in your area you could be going to? Sounds like you need to change it up. I can tell you my husband passed last April after 10 years with congestive heart failure. From August of 2022 to April 2023 when he passed he had 6 different hospitalizations at different hospitals. We knew there were certain hospitals that are terrible, especially the one in the town I live in, and others that are better. The best one is an hour away that had a palliative care team talk to him in October of last year. They told him he had years to months to live. He lived another 5 months. If you are not getting appropriate medical care, do some research and seek out another hospital or doctor. Whatever the case might be. It just might save your life. Kinda like wearing that seat belt.

My mom had hers removed at Kaiser. When she woke up from surgery the first thing she heard was "oh shit! Take her back in I forgot"
Apparently they stitched her back up externally but didn't stop the bleeding internally 1st. I didn't even think twice before the surgery because it wasn't a major operation. But the instant I saw her after surgery I broke down crying because she looked so bad.
My dad needed a heart and lung transplant from the time I turned 11 until he died. So at this point I was used to spending the entire holiday season and about 1 week a month for the past 6-7 years in the hospital watching a parent fighting for their life. I wasn't the type to cry just cause someone is in the hospital, but she was more pale than most if not all of the dead people I had seen. Luckily she survived and didn't have any more issues from it.

Adrenaline does a lot. I had a car accident where I ended up "kissing" the air bag. It was my fault. I was terrified. Someone got me out of the car and as I was sitting on the ground waiting for an ambulance a lady brings a cold cloth up to me and tells me to put it on my face. I had no clue why. Get to the hospital, turns out I was bordering on 3rd degree burns on my face. It was charred in some places (I was wearing a seat belt).

I had Kaiser when I was still on my mom's health insurance. My experience is they seem to try to do the least amount possible/take the cheapest way out of any & EVERY situation. Not to mention the fact that pretty much every time I've gone in there, they've totally judged & looked down on me, given me attitude/poor service or "bedside manner" (to the point where my mom, who's an RN, filed a complaint to HR once after sitting in the room seeing how I was being treated. And many times they've nearly made some serious errors where I'm grateful Im mentally competent enough to catch & call them on it beforehand. Though it makes me concerned for other patients who might not be as cognitively capable.

When I was either 10 or 11, I waited in a Kaiser ER for over an hour and a half before being seen by a doctor, and that might seem like a small amount of time, but I had a gaping wound in my left calf from an ice skating accident. I fell wrong, one of my skates punctured the leg, and I because I didn’t have a phone and it was a skate rink at a shopping mall it took over 20 minutes for my mom to get back and realize something very bad had happened. She yelled at the staff for awhile, drove us back home, and then finally drove us to Kaiser.
The total time between getting injured to seeing a doctor was at the MINIMUM 2 hours.
I didn’t know this at the time, but after going through first aid training later in life, I know that what I saw in that wound was subcutaneous fat. Looking back on it from the very graphic image that is still seared into my brain a decade later, i know for a fact that it was very obvious and visible. And yet when the doctor finally came in to see me, he suggested to my mother that we simply “let the wound close on its own” and that “stitches in that shape would be more of a nuisance than anything else”. I’m very lucky that my godfather (my mom’s best friend) was a surgeon, so she knew those doctor was bullshitting, and got close to yelling at him before he agreed to just stitch it up.
Ultimately, I got 13 stitches, and watched an episode of iCarly on the TV in my hospital room while the numbing agent took affect. As it was happening my mom distracted me by having me practice texting on her old flip phone, and i texted my godfather about the entire thing.
The next day we went to my godparents’ house for breakfast, and when we opened the door he immediately said “let me see, i need to know if the guy did a bad job”
ultimately he decided that he didn’t do too bad given the irregular shape of the injury, but he kept saying “i wish you had just brought her over here, I could’ve done this same job in less than half an hour and it would’ve been free of charge”
And while i appreciate the sentiment, I don’t think it would’ve been easy getting my leg stitched up in the same house where I’d get breakfast every weekend.

I sure have. A couple weeks ago actually. Most of this story was told to me after the fact since I can’t remember it.
I was having some routine dental work done with local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. Towards the end of the appointment, the dentist asked me if everything felt okay, but I didn’t respond. They asked again, thinking I’d fallen asleep, but still nothing. They tried to wake me up, sternum rubs, trap squeezes, oxygen, shaking me, but I didn’t respond at all. They called other people over to help and ended up calling 911. I started to come to a little in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, but I was altered. I was panicking, repeating thing, taking monitors and O2 masks off, and trying to get off the stretcher. It only got worse when I got to the ER. I wouldn’t stop trying to “escape.” There was a team of about 8 people trying to assess me. It took 5-6 of them to hold me down at any given point. SpO2 of 89% (I was hyperventilating), HR of 190 BPM, BP of 180/140. I was febrile and cyanotic. I kept fainting from the low O2 level. The doc very quickly said I needed to be sedated, but the problem was holding me still. They tried to establish IVs but I was fighting so hard I was too tensed up for them to work. They tried IM versed and Ativan but apparently I have a wicked high tolerance. It took 6 mg of versed and 2 mg Ativan to get me still enough to be stable and fully evaluated. The problem was it kept wearing off and I’d go right back to how I was. I even pulled out multiple IVs. They were considering intubation given my vitals and resistance to the meds, and I ended up in the ICU. Countless tests and drugs later, it was determined I suffered from Acute Toxic Metabolic Encephalopathy brought on from a rare drug reaction.
All I really remember is checking in at the dentist’s office and then waking up in the ICU. I have brief like, flashes of memory from the times in between but nothing concrete.

The best nurse experience I ever had was my male nurse at Kaiser in Irvine CA. I swear to God he was psychic. All I had to do was think about him and he was in the room a few seconds later holding whatever I was about to ask him for. He was legitimately MAGIC. The worse experience I ever had was at Fountain Valley hospital, CA. I had four different stays in one year. They were all uniformly appalling. They used to be the best hospital in our area, and now they are without question the worst. Absolute worst. The food service was so bad that out of 139 meals in the hospital, they did not get ONE, not ONE, correct. I spoke to every person in charge they could locate, I spoke to everyone down in the cafeteria, from people in charge to people bringing the meals, it didn't matter. All they had to do was bring me an ensure. That was all. They could not do it, they were incapable. The head nurse finally out of sheer desperation went and bought me ensure with her own money and gave one to me every meal herself. This was 2019. I will stay anywhere other than this hospital ever again.

A Kaiser HMO doctor once changed my birth control prescription to a totally different brand & dose. Told me they were the same. Two months later I was seriously depressed and actually having an aversion to taking it every morning.
Finally got someone to listen and they said they put in a prescription for my old BCPs-except I’d been taking the monophasic version, and I specifically told them that, but they put it in for the very popularly advertised tri-phasic version. I had to wait in the HMO pharmacy line for probably an hour, told them the rx I was there to pick up, by name, and that’s when I found out it had been filled incorrectly. I actually burst into tears on the spot. I told them, again, what I needed. I begged them to fix it. I probably didn’t realize at the time that they couldn’t just swap between versions like I asked them to. I did finally convince them to get in touch with the doctor to have it redone right. And then, dear reader, I stayed in that pharmacy with the stupid long line until it was ready. I was NOT going home until I had the prescription that was NOT going to send me into another depressive spiral, TYVM.
I have never used Kaiser, or another other HMO, since then.

I'M WEARING MY MuFKR HOODIE rn watching this 😁 it's my fave, the best hoodie I've ever gotten. 3yrs and it's still in one piece, and I wear the shit out of this thing. Constantly in the winter and inside in the summer 😂
Ps: I miss the cooking/drinking lives. Those were so fun! Lol- the cookies was the best bc everyone does them differently. And I still remember the enchilada episode bc that's when I got my hoodie and my name was said.
Steve is 100% ER. He said my whole name right the first time without a problem. NOBODY can do that 😂

My friend dislocated his pinky toe and went to Kaiser. He got x rays or some scan and the Dr said "it looks like it might be dislocated but I don't think it is" and sent him home. A month later he had an appointment where he was told they were going to try 1 option but if that didn't work because it's been dislocated for a month we might have to do surgery and put you in a hard cast for 6 months.
Luckily they didn't have to do surgery but after a month with a dislocated pinky toe he had to spend another 4-6 weeks in a boot once they put it back in place. All because they called the injury but sent him home without treating it.
A couple months later he got poison ivy and after his 1st appointment it didn't get better so he got a virtual appointment and they told him to give it another week or 2. After like 2-3 weeks he sees a different Dr that took one look at it, knew it was definitely poison ivy then looked at his prescription and said that it was the right treatment for a 100 lb kid but he was 240lbs so the dr tripled the strength and it was gone in 3 days.
How can an organization be that big of a name in healthcare yet consistently determine what's wrong with the patient and just send them home without the necessary treatment?
"Alright sir it looks like you were stabbed with the knife sticking out of you head. Fuck off and go home but in 3 weeks if you haven't died or gotten medical treatment we can bill insurance for another appointment and I will decide if I feel like dealing with it that day. 🤷
    🧑‍⚕️NEXT!"

Ah, completely in line with the good ol' Kaiser motto, "if we don't find it then we don't have to treat it!"
Step 2: assume you either won't know to sue, or if you do, they can use all the money they saved to outlast you in court.
Kaiser sucks. Except maybe in California where they apparently had to improve after getting sued into oblivion by the state.

When i was rear ended i thought i was fine. It took the police a good hour or so to get to us because there was s more serious wreck ahead of us (that caused the traffic jam that caused my wreck, also fun fact the traffic jam also caused a wreck behind us).
My car had been picked up on its side and i know ihit my head on the side window but i don't really remember it. It's hard to explain.
So i was able to leave, my car looked drivable (it actually was almost totaled, so we were both in worse shape than we thought).
Anyway. I'm driving away and all of a sudden i realize that i can't think the way i think i should be able to. So i get myself to the closest hospital i can. I had s pretty serious concussion. And some other injuries too.
It was kind we were there just long enough for my adrenaline to be up.

I had a stupid accident where my foot caught on a broom left on the floor. We were moving and cleaning.
I tripped and fell on the broom and broke my arm.
Went to emergency as the pain was too great to move. Ok if I didn't move.
The first thing they asked was did you hit your head. Had my hand to catch my head but no not really.
They took a CT anyway just to be sure.
I felt better that they did.
I don't like unnecessary tests but any that can prevent or see a future problem is necessary.

Kaiser is interesting. I have had good and bad service at Kaiser during the same trip.
I had a scan done on one of my saliva glands (which is still blocked) the same day I saw the doctor for this. The recommendation blew as massage the blockage away wasn't a stellar recommendation as this gland is located in the corner where my jaw meets my neck. Kinda HARD to get at this gland in the f'n corner dummy.
Transition care there is damn good. (Plenty of friends used them for their transitions. They even cover electro through outside providers.)
My only colonoscopy was good there and the doc that did this remembered me a year and a half later. (Coverage lapse.)
I saw urgent care easy enough for rubbing my eye too much.
My kidney stone story is good and bad. The ER trip was a bad pain trip including the ultrasound of one of my testicles before pain med. (I threw up once I was back in the ER room.) I did get imaged correctly and x-rayed a couple of days later for confirmation. The urologist I had for this got confused about medication between Flonase and Flomax. I couldn't reorder Flonase until he fixed this.

Baltimore in August? I gotta go! Or you need to add a show in Pittsburgh.
We have two major health systems in town, one has its own health insurance plan, and they will not accept BCBS unless you can prove the other hospital system can’t help you. They practically got divorced a decade ago. You could probably have a field day roasting the Big Name in town.

    1. It is so on brand that ED nurses first assumption of cracking a windshield with your head is that you were comin from the outside in.
    2. Don't make assumptions, mostly they just ain't wearing their seat belt and are the normal kind of stupid, so at least when you get report it's like "ooooooh okay so this is like nature/nature/natural selection vs MH cracked your head. Got it"
    3. You should do a show in Ontario Canada so me and my ED can come have a laugh in Toronto
