Watch this work performed by the Asian Youth Orchestra under the baton of James Judd: • Mahler - Symphony No. ...
Whenever Claudio Abbado conducts the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, music lovers are in for a very special event. Such was the case in the summer of 2009 when the charismatic Italian conductor opened Lucerne's tradition-rich Festival with a concert featuring Mahler's First Symphony and Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In 2003 Abbado, together with Artistic and Executive Director Michael Haefliger, founded the orchestra, which consists of internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians - just as did its model, the elite body of musicians that Arturo Toscanini gathered around hirn at the Festival's founding in 1938. lt was with this first-class ensemble that Abbado offered a vividly inspired interpretation of the Mahler. In truth - as the audience's response demonstrated - it left nothing to be desired. The twenty-two-year-old Chinese Pianist Yuja Wang likewise earned enthusiastic applause for her account of the Prokofiev Concerto, which she played with character and nuanced expression.
The theme of nature served es the guiding thread for all the programming choices during the summer of 2009 - a theme with obvious relevance for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, which is held amid one of the most beautitul landscapes of Europe: its concerts incIude unforgettable views of Lake Lucerne and Alpine panoramas. This theme, es it happens, has eminent musical significance es well: 'Like a sound of nature' is the direction Mahler inscribed at the very beginning of the First Symphony.

Most right comment!!
I listened to Mahler daily for about a year--in fact, I only listened to classical because other music just got boring. There's too much music for it to have stayed that way though. I feel bad for anyone who just listens to one type of music.

As long as Abbado is piloting!
Mahler, Wagner, Strauss, Brukcner is real origin of cinematic music. They's music have real beauty and harmony.
Abbado is probably one of the best Mahler interpreters of his time and now

Its a really good music but i mean, is it really worth all the suffering just to listen to this music?
@@thegameranch5935 Yes.
The youth orchestra of Suncheon, a small city in Korea, is supposed to perform this beautiful music this coming June. Happily, my two sons are in the orchestra. This music might be beyond them. Still, it's just adorable to see them practice over and over again, and listen to it even while they're sleeping every single day. The conductor of the youth orchestra is Mr.Seo Kyeong-wook, a genuine artist. All the members really respect him and so do their parents. We are so grateful to him. I wish the city officials would think this way.

I love how Abbado is exhausted after the Symphonie but devoted to do it !!!!! pure enthusiasm!!!!!!!!
Brought tears to my eyes.... RIP Maestro Abbado...!
Amazing to see Sir Simon Rattle sitting in the audience. I've always loved Mahler 1. After not listening to it for a while it moves me so much again
I once was speaking to John Williams & he referred to his Star Wars movies soundtracks as "My little compositions" compared to Mahlers "Full & complete symphonies". John is always humble but as a musician, the genius to write a symphony that goes for about a hour is pure musical genius, in my opinion.
RIP Maestro Abbado - you’re music making has brought me much joy !
Maestro Abbado, marvelous humanity in Mahler's Symphony.

I salute Claudio Abbado, may he rest in peace. Also, Sir Simon Rattle in the audience!
Rattle in the audience!!!! Get real! there to see what he can learn! NO comparison to the late Abbado a conductor in name only, an insult to Abbado to even mention Rattle.
What a ridiculous statement to contrive.
The second sentence is nothing but a shame.
Cool linguistic maneuver but nothing but a shame.
at 0:01 is it rattle?
c c yes
Imagine playing the second symphony right after this one. First, you hear the most triumphant ending, and then, BAM. The most keyed up, ominous beginning.
To think that Mahler was shunned by his friends after the first performance! They wouldn't look him in the eye! He knew then that his music would not be his living. He'd have to conduct. Oh how amazed he would be to see how he is embraced by the world today. Such a sad and great story.
True! But do remember, the version Mahler's friends heard did not resemble the Symphony No. 1 we know today by any means. It was revised extensively. I wonder where we can hear the original Mahler 1...maybe it's not even in existence anymore.
They probably heard a disastrous performance. I remember buying a version of this on cassette way back when, by some unknown conductor and orchestra. It was noise. It was horrible! I can't imagine how it must feel for a composer to have his/her work destroyed in performance. I'm lucky I'm a poet (unknown/Ignotus). Nobody can wreck my stuff ! :)
+Zachary Larson But he did conduct and it's well known that the irony of the third movement was just incomprehensible to the audiennce. They weren't used to expressions of this sort. emotionalism. Plus other of his works were equally dismissed. He had a hard time of it. Not uncommon with such originality.
Yes, true!
The same applies to Beethoven, his original works were truly a mess, and it took years for him to be properly recognized after his death, it also took much revision, reworking and refining of his pieces that allowed for proper hearing.
Le percussioni sull'ultimo movimento, anche se non autografe, devo dire che coronano una esecuzione magistrale. Questa performance è veramente un manuale di come si concerta.

Sure - but Abbadio is NOTHING without an orchestra......... Just a single conductor......
@@udok8046 so...? His work demands him to work with an orchestra, and the orchestra would not play like that if it wasn't for him. Yet nothing of this would be possible without Mahler.

¡MAHLER, MAHLER, MAHLER..!

I would have loved to hear Mahler's own performance of this titan of a work. But if Mahler had been in the audience he would have been the first to his feet at the end. Stunning, breathtaking... lost for words...

i find Mahler's music rich in musical ideas..beautiful gems that you can spend hours agonisingly recalling (agonising because you cannot whistle them or hum them really, because of the contrasting tones, u simply have to endure them since they don't leave ur head the whole day!)...and the atmosphere! Something like deep-forest gnomes, nymphs, satyrs or whatever doing their stuff contentedly, undisturbed..
Deep forest gnomes ....? I was deep in the ocean getting ready to jump out and see a beautiful island full of coconuts,
Agree
The volume is TOO low. ☹

What better commendation than to have Simon Rattle in the audience!
No pressure, Simon Rattle's in the audience
The most beautiful thing in Mahler's music and in particular in his first symphony is this kind of mistic tension that hides in apparent simplictiy, both melodically and armonically speaking, that leads, usually in an unexpected way, to the main themes (the real proof of his genius) of the symphony itself. Mahler's first is made up of gems floating in a deep, misterious ocean. And of course that's the reason for wich listening to Mahler requires so much concentration and passion. Mahler's music is expression of life in all its reality and in all its cruelty and in that sense this symphony is a real manifesto of the revolution carried out by Mahler and Mahler alone.
A big bravo to Claudio Abbado wich, as usual, is able to capture the composer's intentions with absolute sensibility. Thank you for everything Maestro.
+Andrea Iudica The expressions of joy from the musician are unmistakable: tangible connections in the earthy Ländler. Mahler touches our true nature, perhaps the essence of Abbado's gift. This performance should be widely known in civilised culture.
(I enjoyed your comment so much I made one of my own.)
+Andrea Iudica Thank you for a wonderful comment. Having performed this First Sym from a young age, I am just beginning to see what it means. " Mahler's music is expression of life in all its reality and in all its cruelty". Yes. The cruelty is there like salt in chocolate. But bitter still.
Andrea Iudica
Wow, thanks everyone, i'm glad that you appreciate my compositions!
Tweet from the dead!:)
this piece just makes me smile
I am wondering how ignorant to be in order to dislike such a concert!
How ignorant can be the silliest person?
almost cries when the horns start to stand up :') purely majestic piece
What's so cool with this is that it's beginning is so similar to that of Beethoven's 9th, the symphony that really began the romantic era.
It's almost like Mahler in his first symphony is aiming to say "This was the man who started it all, I'm going to finish it". And he did.
Yes, I noticed that too… He liked to copy ideas😅, the fifth movement (considering that the third movement has cut by Mahler’s publisher) has several themes that sound too familiar. For example, the last phrase at 56:06 is similar to Schubert’s famous Allegretto in C minor for piano (middle section).
But even Chopin’s Butterfly Etude is an almost literal copy of the third movement of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 25, so I guess they all did it. That’s shocking for all those Chopin lovers out there haha
@@rodrigolandaromero Immediately putting a negative spin on it, great...
@@rodrigolandaromero "All artists borrow, great artists steal"
@@cristoforomaragni890 That’s like the cheapest phrase ever: but in any case, Mahler “borrowed” the ideas (if he had in fact “stolen” them, would we be able to notice?)
Wow it’s funny how people can just hear sayings and repeat them like parrots without even knowing their meaning😂 Hilarious and sad at the same time🤔
remarkable observation, noel, it really seems that is what mahler infers here
There are few things that sound as good as a great orchestra playing Mahler round midnight - and this one, well I'm not an expert but you don't have to be one to see that they've NAILED IT !!
Of course they're all elite musicians, but the "Maestro" has them all on a string!!
Claudio Abbado became a very charismatic conductor in the later stages of his career. And he knows his Mahler.
Bravissimo!!!
When you're studying with this in the background and suddenly 36:27 comes on.
I jumped a few inches off of my seat.😂😂
I just went to see Montreal symphony orchestra play this yesterday. I'm still hooked. When the horns stood up I simply couldn't hold back my tears.
Excelente! Gran Director su eminencia! Claudio Abbado..Gran Orquesta del Festival De Lucerna..Obra preciosa! sinfonia del genial compositor Gustav Mahler..
When I was a student of the double bassist Alois Posch I had the pleasure of hearing him perform this symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic. I remember his 3rd movement bass solo as the best interpretation of that solo I have ever heard. What a wonderful surprise to find this performance and see his remarkable solo (25:05) again. Such amazing artistry and control of phrasing.
Astonishingly fine music making. RIP Abbado.
Abbado, the best ever
Bloody superb. Abbado's tempos are virtually spot on ... far too many conductors rush Mahler. Listen to the love for Abbado in that audience!
For my grandparents, Mahler must have been like prog rock for me (in the 70s).
The master Claudio Abbado in Mahlers first symphony (one of my favorites). This is a masterpiece. A crown among symphonies! One can return over and over again to this clip. Amazing and brilliant performance indeed!
This is one of those times I wish I could give more than just one thumbs up.
Great to see (Sir) Simon Rattle in the audience for such a great piece played so well
The first time I saw this live and the horns stood up at the end I died of bliss.

Wonderful really how it seems all about nature and its spirit specially in march tempo. It seems the snow falling down softly
funerale grave, senza straschichi, solennemente gioioso: danza della vita e della luce. Grazie Maestro Abbado!

This performance is so subtle and of wonderfull humanity....the musicians seem to enjoy it so much themselves, and what a fantastic orchestra !
Glad to see Mr Abbado in picture so much! He is of course conducting without notes...
The opening movement of ONE I must have listened to more than 100 times. I still get different readings from it, every time I hear it. That's how rich is Mahler's music - he had so much to say about humans in nature. I need to get back to listening.
Patrick Cardiff didnt know Mahlers Music was this profound. I just listen to it because i rlly enjoy it
Without wishing to sound trivial especially as a person who has been devoted to Mahler for 40 years and who hopes to leave this world to the Chorus Mysticus from the 8th Symphony, the opening bars of this Symphony always seem to take me out of this world and I almost say "Space, the final frontier....". Mahler's music for me encompasses the whole world and changes me every time I listen to it. This is an excellent performance. I am not always of fan of Abbado as a conductor of Mahler (Solti is among my favourites)but here he really is outstanding. I noticed Simon Rattle in the audience which says something (he's another great conductor of Mahler).
Wow - what an orchestra ! I have seldom seen such physicality. Deep commitment and love of the music, each other and Abbado. A tremendous performance. It should have been at the Proms - then I could have been there.
