The almost 40 seconds of silence at the end of the Symphony are sublime. Every performance should end like this, to allow us to fully digest the last notes, before starting to replace it with the clapping noise. Only Abbado was able to achieve it. I miss you so much Maestro.

I so enjoyed that you pointed that out. As a musician myself, I love how he almost seems not to stop directing until he has also digested the music & processed his emotions. He does not simply wave a wand at the end of a piece to bring it to an abrupt end. What a joy it must have been to play for him!

The playing throughout is sublime--despite the histrionics. I don't doubt that the orchestra loved him, too, but I doubt even more that the contrived turbulence and gyrations for the camera have anything to do with that. (Look, for example at 24:09. Good thing we can see both of his hands!) There are some videos I watch with the sound muted. This one, I listen to with the screen minimized. To each his own. And yes, I love the music Claudio Abbado made.

206dvr There’s nothing wrong with an orchestra getting jazzed up for a great conductor. Bernstein had the same effect I’m sure, to name just one. Unlike some other legendary conductors who were capable of inspiring terror.

@@206dvr Obviously your choice to feel this way. Abbado is the ONLY composer I've ever watched who elicited a smile from a musician playing a complex part of a symphony. For the type of music he helps create I find his gestures endearing and loads of fun to watch. If he didn't adore his orchestras he was the best actor in the history of classical music.

  • @jrthiker9908

Abbado always got the most flexible phrasing and rubato out of his orchestras without over-conducting, over-controlling. Always organic. He trusted the musicians and they trusted him. He's one of the few conductors who could get a non-Italian orchestra to play with the sunny affekt and rhythmic flexibility that are hallmarks of Italian musicians. His Rossini is unmatched for finding the right balance of speed, poise, lightness, and a singing quality at all times.

Mahler had a deeper, more ethereal and visceral understanding of the absolute POWER of the double basses in symphonic music than any other composer in history: That incredible despairing passage in the “Ruhevoll” (Peaceful) third movement - beginning at 38:47 - with downward orchestral glissandos... ending with double bass glissandos (at 39:22)... revealing Mahler’s "Demons moving ominously, just beyond the veil of vision"... is one of the most astonishing and thrilling moments in ALL Mahler... and then, almost imperceptibly, we're back in the thoroughly “Viennese” key of G major (39:48)... chills & thrills aplenty! Such a deceptively dark, unsettling work. The third movement is magnificently expressive, with the lush, elegiac opening leading to disturbing visions of the abyss ( 39:10 ) juxtaposed against Loony Tunes ( 41:35 ). And the finale. There’s more to this than the innocent ramblings of a child. More like a starving child dreaming of plenty, leading to the muted, nihilistic final harp notes. The soloist’s sometimes blank, sometimes intense expressions are fitting.

I love the way he 'sucks the air out of the room' withe violins after the big oboe solo in the slow movement. My impression of any recording of this symphony is what the conductor does with with that 5 minute or so section from the oboe solo to the end of the second descent into hell. I could listen to this section of this recording forever and never get enough.

The very first classical music i was ever introduced to was Mahler's 4th. It, and now all of the Great maestro's symphonies music are religion to me. He now plays for the heavens.
My hats off to the happy conductor and musicians, this was a 10. Blessings

Congratulations, Robert. You are now directly connected to the Heavens. I especially enjoyed the singing of Magdalena Kožená. I think this piece suits a Mezzo Soprano much better than a Soprano. It needs that mezzo power. I first heard it 40-50 years ago, and Frederica von Stade, the great Mezzo Soprano of the 80s (and, even today here in Alameda, CA), sang it, under Maestro Abbado with the Wiener Philharmoniker. We lost that great Mahler interpreter 4 years ago.

You are right, except for one another performance by Claudio Abbado, the one he did with the Vienna Philarmonic together with the soprano Frederica von Stade around 1978. This rendition is the perfect expression of Mahler's symphonic art, specially the interpretation of the sublime third movement's ending.

Genius is a small word to describe Maestro Abbado. What kind of brain made him able to memorize the
nine big and complicated Mahler's symphonies and conduct them (without score) with such brilliancy ? I think Mahler himself couldn’t do it. RIP Great Maestro Abbado.

The works of a composers lives from the gaze that is given to it. It is not limited to what it is, nor to the one who produced it, it is also made by the one who hears it. Music, painting are a space of questioning and meditation where the senses that we attribute to it can come and be done and be undone at any time
