    Spectacular. No matter how many times I hear this symphony, I still get chills when the horn players stand "so as to drown out everything…even the trumpets."

    This is great!! I love Fabio Luisi's interpretation is fantastic! As a horn player, I enjoy seeing the climax of the Finale being played by the 7/8 horns without support from a trumpet and trombone as Mahler himself placed in the score as an option. I often wonder why Mahler did not utilize 7-8 Wagner tubas instead of standard horns in this passage. Anyone who has heard the Universal Studios fanfare cannot tell the difference between the horn and the tuben until they know exactly where one ends and the other begins and even then it is not so obvious except the tuben project more. My graduate horn professor often referred to these tuben as 'horns on steroids'. I would love to see a performance of this Symphony where the horn players would put down the horns and take up the tuben for these last several minutes of this work. I really do believe Mahler would approve.

I just wanted to check some parts of the symphony and ended in listening to almost everything. And everything was done with precision and perfect expression. So, the applause at the end was very well earned.

    Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und melodisch komponierten Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der zweite Satz klingt echt kräftig und auch beweglich. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik, als wäre er ein zweiter Mahler. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

    Fabio Luisi is currently the chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, so I have listened to his performances many times. And I can hear all of his performances sound like opera. Even Brahms and Beethoven. But this performance sounds like a symphony.

    Like most conductors he slows down at (in this performance) 44:46-45:03 even though the score is marked "a tempo." This destroys the contrast with the later recurrences of the motif, when the score does indicate a change in tempo. Jascha Horenstein is one of the few who follows the score at this point, and the movement benefits tremendously.

    • @KevinVanOrd
      @KevinVanOrd 2 роки тому +2

      I find the termpi in this performance often inexplicable. He slows and speeds the scherzo very oddly, bringing it almost to a halt and then zooming back at breakneck speed. In the third movement when the clarinets break into the 'parodie', the score is marked 'nicht schleppen', which Maestro Luisi interprets as 'race away so fast it's like a new piece of music has begun'. This performance has lovely moments, but the symphony's shape is lost with all the odd tempi.

    • @ALEXANDRZ1961

      @@KevinVanOrd Mahler's tempos are very important. And you're right, these slowdowns are terrible. Mahler's music turns into provincial dances (((

I enjoy the variety of comments of the conductors and orchestras noted below. I would be pleased to listen to, and see many of the conductors and orchestras not on you tube who are/were the 'greats' of their time if they did Mahler. I wonder what Mahler would say in this and other postings if he were able to comment.

The great music of Mahler's Symphony is alive. And this performance by Fabio Luisi with terrible tempos is dead. (((

    The tempo changes in the second movement are very abrupt which I haven't heard in other interpretations! I actually like it, it really adds a layer of confusion and chaos!
