"Blissful trust"
Those who were able to be there in person are unlikely ever to forget the occasion. Whenever Claudia Abbado conducts Mahler, especially when he is at the head of his own Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the whole is more than just the sum of its parts thanks to a process that one is tempted to call magical. The present live recording of an acclaimed performance of Mahler's Third Symphony at Lucerne's Culture and Convention Centre on 19 August 2007 provides lasting proof of this and allows us to see that with Abbado ecstasy is never achieved at the expense of musical and rhetorical clarity: a powerful emotional charge is held in check by calm contemplation. Never for a moment does Abbado give undue emphasis to subjective mawkishness or an overtly theatrical sense of worldweariness: Abbado's Mahler is precisely calculated and at the same time intuitively felt.
The musicians of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra were meeting for the Orth time when they assembled in Lucerne in the summer of 2007. Among them were not only a number of distinguished soloists but also experienced principals from the world's foremost orchestras: the leaders were Kolja Blacher and Sebastian Breuninger, while the rank-and-file violin sec-tion behind them included players of the eminence of Mirijam Contzen and llya Gringolts. The cellos ware led by Jens Peter Maintz and Natalia Gutman sitting alongside Valentin Erben of the Alban Berg Quartett and Clemens Hagen, whose sister, Veronika, was a member of the viola section under Wolfram Christ and Diemut Poppen. The woodwind section in-cluded the flautist Jacques Zoon and the ciarinettist Sabine Meyer, while prominent among the brass was the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich.
All the plavers are friendly with one another es weil as sharing a special affinity for chamber music, which famously makes the greatest demands in terms ofthe need to listen closely to one's colleagues. And it is here thatthis orchestra is unique, a uniqueness clear from the present performance. The large concert hell seerned literally to vibrate with psychic energy, and the intensity with which the musicians responded to even the tiniest fluctuations in the music reached the point where all the players seemed to surpass themselves. "The goal is clear and is shared by all the participants," wrote the critic ofthe Neue ZürcherZeitung; "it seems that in advancing towards this goal, the players achieve a high degree of individual responsibility, while the conductor encourages each and every one ofthem ... to realize his or her potential in orderto benefitthe collective- an example of successful leadership in a highly specialized context. As such, this is more or less the opposite of what people normally assume to be the job of a conductor. What we saw here was emphatically not self-promotion ata stroke butthe experience that something special arises only when people have space in which to develop."
Abbado first recorded Mahler's Third Symphony in 1980, following it up with a second recording in 1999, both of them demonstrating the conductor's particular affinity with the work. His unerring feel tor the narrative structures of this rich and varied score finds expression in an extraordinary sensitivity, aliowing hirn to respond with particular vividnessto a workthat deals with nothing lass than the origins ofthe universe. Once you really get the taste of Mahler there is no going back. Proud to be addicted to his music 🎶
As I know all Mahlers works Im trying to find a new favourite composer. I tried Bethoven, Bruckner, but noone can really compare to Mahler :( Any thoughts?
@@krzem3532 From my experience of listening to wide range of symphonies from different composers, mahler is still number one for me. But my sympathies definetly go to Sibelius, Bruckner (especially his 7th), Brahms, Shostakovich,Schubert,Schumann,Rachmanjnoff and to delightful Tchaikovsky. His 6th symphony, especially the final movement of it, is the tragedic masterpiece itself. Definetly recommend symphonies of above-mentioned composers. Henrik Gorecki is also someone i am really fond of. If you are interested, i could point out favourite symphonies of those composers.
@@krzem3532 Try also Stravinsky. His firebrid and the rite of spring are of utmost sophistication. Saint-Saens's so called Organ Symphony is also highly enjoyable.

I have sung there, I was in the choir (Arnold Schönberg Chor)! RIP Maestro Abado..❤
What a privilege to have been there and to have felt everything that this symphony brings. You are a lucky person, like everyone who was in that auditorium that day.
@@gustavooliveros9553 thank you, I was really happy back then..
Congrats, the chor was magnificent! It took some smiles from Abbado, beautiful.

Felicitări Gabriela !
I have loved this work for 45 years- I spent my pocket money on the full score when I was 16 years old- so I thought I knew this wondrous symphony inside out, but Abbado's performance here is a revelation to me. I am stunned that he and the marvellous players make me hear every bar of this great score as if for the first time. There is the deepest level of understanding and internal relaxation here that eludes many performances. The sprawling first movement can feel so fragmented and episodic unless there is a master in control who has a long- range sense of the structure. I salute the late, great Claudio Abbado and the superb soloists known collectively as The Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
+Paul Barrett I couldn't agree more. A wonderful performance. I only wish I had been there
+Paul Barrett I applaud your understanding of this piece, you explained it far better than I could. Mahler 3 is glorious.
+Paul Barrett I think I bought the score when I was a little older than 16, but it took me many years to fully appreciate it. I got the box recording of Mahler's symphonies by Solti and the CSO, and honestly I think it disappoints. As some people/critics have said, he makes it sound too much like Beethoven.
Quote: "... that eludes most conductors, who often make the score sound frequently brash and tense, especially in the sprawling first movement, which can feel so fragmented and episode unless there is a master in control who has a long- range sense of the structure."
I couldn't agree more, that is a perfect description of how Solti took it in my estimation. I have mixed feelings on Bernstein's performances as well.
I've only heard the first 9 minutes of this video, but so far it is absolutely fantastic. As you say, Abbado has a very deep understanding of the work, well except for the harsh and blaring trombones just after the opening fanfare, I think the sound should be softer and more rounded like Bernard Haitink takes it. But with the recapitulation at 25 minutes in it is perfect, the sound of the trombones, not too harsh, but still with an edge and some bite to it, a perfectly brazen tone. Listening to the horn(or was it the trombone solo) it's just beautiful. I cannot wait to hear the grand and rousing finale of the first movement.
This is indeed a great performance, and I have no further criticisms as of 16 minutes in, except that it may be a bit too deliberate for me in some places, but this is rather minor nitpicking on my part, and overall the performance is very good. The dynamics are wonderful, the "lyrical" tunes are played with wonder and delicately but not too sweetly, with just the right amount of accent and emphasis on certain notes, and there is still good driving energy and tension to be heard as well.
At this point all I can say is that it's truly a great performance, one of the best I have had the privilege of hearing.
+Paul Barrett I agree in full
+Paul Barrett Couldn't agree more! I wonder why I can't buy all those on CD...
Incredible performance by Abbado… It’srevealing that the audience shares the emotion, as it lets a few seconds of silence, in communion with the conductor, after the symphony ends. It feels so right. Many times you wish that the applause wouldn’t start so soon… As it is so true that for Mozart, Mahler and many others, the silence that follows still belongs to them.
Totally! 💯 I don’t know why there is such a hurry to be first to applaud or even most gastly, to shout “bravo” first while the music is still ringing. Plenty of time to scream, shout and applaud after a beautiful moment of silence.
His majesty Claudio Abbado memorized entire notes of this extra vanganza work for 100minutes and conducted every note in right ways for melody, tempo, size, rythm, volume, articulations, and ways of expression in complete ways. Maybe he was a music God of old Greek and revived in this world, I hope he should come back again and again many times to give happiness to many of music lovers. Warm with humanity!!!
In the third movement, post horn and other isntruments were exceptionally well communicated, harmonized, and phrased with musical essence. Especially I love this interpretaion.
jae nah l
Abbado had an extraordinary musical memory. He was of those very rare people who could remember scores in full. It is very hard for anyone to perform this symphony for how long it is.

Tempo in performing Mahler is very important. Too slow or too fast can wreck the whole thing. Not so with the high priest of Mahler, Claudio Abbado. The tempos always feel spot on. Forever my favorite Mahler conductor, RIP dear maestro. This performance of the 3rd is the best on UA-cam. Watch, listen and enjoy.
Dear Walter, I am familiar with Mahler's outstanding works, but new to watching live recorded performances, especially from Conductor Claudio Abbado - I am HOOKED.
Abbado is absolutely stupendous. A true legend!
You know that an audience has experienced an awe almost divine when a piece ends and for twenty seconds there isn't a sound. And as with the second symphony (which I watched just before this), Abbado doesn't turn first to the audience, but brings his fellow performers to their feet to accept the accolades of the audience.
Late to the party, but if you haven't seen the 9th of this Abbado cycle yet, go watch it now!
The trombone solo by Jörgen van Rijen is incredibly well played

Abbado successfully interpreted Mahler's Symphony No.3 in a passionate yet tranquil way. Especially in the 6th movement, he totally led the orchestra to an unknown heaven, making us touched and refreshed. This is without doubt my favourite version of Mahler No.3!!!
Mine too! The spirituality of this performance is overwhelming

1:30:05 One of the best brass chorale ever composed, so fragile yet beautiful and ultimately brings us to the "answer" to whatever question we're asking while listening to this symphony.
The look on his face between end of piece and applause is priceless. Looks to be on the verge of tears. As if he knew he didn't have much time left and may not have many more Mahler symphonies to conduct.
Watch his performance of Mahler's 9th. Especially the last 10 minutes.
the one with the Mahler Youth Orchestra is still up. Almost as powerful. the lights gradually dim as the symphony starts its ending phase, and the stage is almost totally dark by the end.
The "life" theme at 6:35 is just so beautiful
What is remarkable is that Abbado knows this entire score by heart, while his musicians frequently require sheet music for their own parts.
?? Not remarkable at all. All orchestral players play from the score. This is not sight-reading, it is score-reading. Maestros often memorize the score; they conduct the piece many times more than the players play it, and this Festival orchestra is no exception. Yes, it's a great performance, but not because Abbado memorizes and the players don't.
Best perrformance of this symphony!
I absolutely love that little smile the maestro gives us at the end of the 3rd mvt. at 59:35. Brings me to tears. He smiles, I smile.
Haha, delightful. The smile reflects the preceding modulations.
Maestro Claudio Abbado owns all the symphonies by Mahler. He's truly a Genius.
My first introduction to Mahler was Abbado's 2nd with Lucerne Festival. At 16 it was already my favorite piece of classical music. I'm 31 now, and for years, I've been trying to get into Mahler, listening mainly to Bernstein and Fischer. I knew Mahler was supposed to be full of marvels for the patient listener... but I was desperate, not able to touch his secrets.
Since last week, I've been listening to Abbado's performances, beginning with the 5th, than the 1st, 2nd and so on! And it has been a revelation!!! I can't say nothing wrong about Bernstein and others, but Abbado is the one opening Mahler to me!
The final movement (along with the entire work) always moves me deeply, but the other day, whilst walking around in a shopping mall, I was listening to the final movement, and it suddenly hit me as never before.
I felt weak and wanted to cry. Music had never moved me like that. ❤️
There are times your state of mind is more vulnerable or amenable ...I want to be in that state if I listen to Mahler and it makes me more so....
Mahler 3 and shopping - a potent mix!
Even if a year, 10 years, or 20 years pass, his music will forever make me cry. Miss you maestro
Meisterstueck ! Love G.Mahler and C.Abbado ! R.I.P Maestro and Danke fuer all das Schoenste ! 👏👏👏❤️🎼❤️💚🎼💚🌹🌷🙏🙏🙏
I thought I had heard the finest performance of Mahler Symphony No 3 when I was present to hear Abbado conduct it with London Symphony Orchestra and Jessye Norman in 1985 but this performance surpasses every other performance I have ever heard. It is the finest performance performance of one of the great works it will ever be my privilege to hear
Claudio Abbado il più grande.Grazie dal profondo dell'anima.
Claudio Abbado, aqui, supera-se a si próprio. Bravo, Maestro!
One thing I have reflected on when listening to Mahlers music. You can never, absolutely never, have Mahler as background music. It affects you too much, it requires your attention. I also adore Haydn but for other reasons. You can play Haydn as background music but for sure not Mahler. Thanks for uploading, a master-piece of music, performance and recording!
I'm going to see an orchestra performance in Bangkok on December 2nd, and they will play this masterpiece! I can't wait anymore.
I think that 1:27:54 is one of the most beautiful moments in music.
What gets me with this searingly honest and clear rendering of the third symphony by Abbado is the way that the audience are rendered completely silent well after the closing bars have passed.
Please, take for you just a moment to realise that M° Abbado learnt all the Mahler's symphonies by heart!!
that was before Netflicks....
This is a remarkable performance. This is an orchestra put together from some of the greatest soloists and chamber music players in the world. And they play like a chamber ensemble of 108 players, intensely listening to each other. They play with an intense commitment to Mahler's music as if that composer's music were, in the words of Norman Lebrecht, "a matter of life and death." Add to that what appears to be a great affection and even love for the renowned Mahler conductor Claudio Abbado on the part of the orchestra, and you have what I think is the best performance of this epic work ever.
That a truly great soloist like the cello virtuoso Natalia Gutman would unfailingly turn up to play in the LFO, often for no pay, says a lot for Claudio Abbado and the love and esteem in which he was held. Also, she appears to be sight-reading, which I for one wouldn't attempt in a work like this!
As someone said, it's not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that!
Well you better not be in a hurry if you wanna listen to this symphony
+Maestro Prodigy You listen to symphonies when you are in a hurry?
Che emozione Maestro Abbado, che emozione!!!
I did not get Mahler at first (bought a Kubelik box set but not very impressed and found it a bit boring). One day i decided to pick up Mahler from Bruno Walter's box and listen to it actively....WOW. This person must have suffered the hardest things in life. I like the darkness, the love stories and the enlightened moments in Mahler's music.
Beside Abbado as everyone else has mentioned, I think the musicians in this orchestra are truely amazing, especially the brass. I thank all musicians and the channel to share this beautiful music with us.
I was privileged to hear the same team perform the symphony a few days later at the Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall in a concert which many critics described as the best they'd ever attended. I, for one, will never forget it.
So little said of Anna Larsson's spectacular performance. Mahler must have known she would turn up one day.
If this is not the most beautiful music it must be close.
The horn section is absolutely superb here!
God! I feel overwhelmed with the unrealistically wide range of expression in this work. Mahler Is perhaps one of the greatest organisms that have ever existed in the universe.
Fantastisch Alessio Allegrini, der Solo Hornist!
G. Mahler's music always has something deep and dramatic. Love it !
Malher e Claudio Abbado ,accoppiata vincente in tutti i sensi !!!!!!!!!
Maestro Abbado was one of the foremost interpreters of Mahler’d music. In my humble opinion, this rendition of one of the greatest symphonies is simply magnificent difficult to surpass. Thrilling.
The concertmaster in this performance sounds absolutely amazing.

Grazie Maestro, grazie Mahler.
This is my most favourite video on youtube. I listen to it usually when I feel any long-lasting strong emotion, positive or negative. Not just this symphony, but this particular recording is very dear to me.
Gustau Mahler , Symphony , trois , it was very beautiful and inspiring Thank you Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Claudio Abbado ❤
I have explored the joys of Mahler, Abbado and the Lucerne Orchestra endlessly. Over a lifetime of listening to music, of every genre, I come to the realisation that Mahler speaks to very depths of what it is to be human. Abbado and the Lucerne Orchestra and its soloists and choirs reach as close to perfection as is possible: I have not heard better. Thank you. Only Bach compares.
Try Bernstein’s London Phil recording. Trust me, it’s better (somehow!)

An unbelievable spiritual experience if you just give yourself to this music. Overwhelming in every respect. Abbado is priceless.

A Musical encyclopedia of space and the diversity of life on our Planet the Earth. And human person is the highest level, BUT part of this ecosystem. Every human person has the ability to feel and enjoy. What brings pleasure and joy? Of course it's some beauty. The world around us is created so wonderful and beautiful! And a person’s duty is to live through himself everything that he sees around him. And talk about your experiences and to share them through the realization of your talents. BUT there is a great temptation to imagine yourself as omnipotent. And then instead of creative power and beauty comes anger, aggression and death… A human person MUST conquer this within himself! In my opinion, Mahler spoke about this in his Third Symphony. Thanks for your attention and I would appreciate if someone could reply about that😊
I have this symphony on CD but it helps so much to appreciate it being able to see which parts of the orchestra are playing and how it all fits together. it means I listen to the music on a whole different level. I am not an expert in classical music but this performance seems to me especially fine. I feel an enormous sense of privelege listening to this and feeling Mahler's links to composers in the past. Especially in my opinion Beethoven though I suspect many others feel this link too.
58:10 Now that's what I call a Big Moment!
Thank you for posting this masterpiece in terms of composition and execution
