    Someone's first introduction to Opeth being Sorceress and then jumping into this beast is kind of funny, now I feel like everyone should first see a clean vocals only song and then get hit by Mikael's demon side

    It seems like no matter how many times I've heard any particular Opeth song, I always find another nugget I missed in previous listenings. You honestly can't go wrong with any song by them. However, if you like bass heavy proggy stuff I highly suggest checking out a band called Beyond Creation. A personal favorite of mine by them is "Earthborn Evolution." Keep doing what you do man.

    This was Martin Mendez first time to shine. He joined during MAYH but the bass parts were already recorded by Mikael. Still life was Martin Mendez doing his thing.
    Imo one of the best metal bassist because he does a lot for the songs without being super flashy but his accents and flairs from time to time stands out and he has a killer tone with usually great bass lines. This came out what around 98, 99? Totally ahead of their time.
    One thing about Opeth, at least from my experience, the first time I would hear a song I would think to myself that’s a lot to take in. Usually after about the 4th-5th listen I would suddenly “get it”and fall in love with the song. Opeth and late era Death were the bands that popped my Death vocal style metal cherry.
    We use to call it Cookie Monster vocals and make fun of it, but now I can listen to certain bands that use growls and have no issue. But not all growls are created equal and the reason Mikael was so good (and bands like jinjer) is that it’s not monotone and adds to the song. When done artistically and in good taste it can definitely elevate a song.

    This album is like Pink Floyd's Wall album: listening to this and that track is great, but sitting down and listening to the entire thing with the lyrics from start to finish is a completely different experience.
    P.s. same goes for Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche. 😇

    Still Life is a highly rated album of theirs. All the songs are brilliant even though I'm not a big fan of blackened death metal. Their run from this album (1998) to 2008 was by far their prime era. Opeth is just built different from the rest.

    If you're gonna react to Opeth - Ghost of Perdition song, the live version at Red Rocks is usually the preferred one: it really shows their craftsmanship in action, unadultered by studio effects, and it's glorious. I went to two Opeth concerts and they blew me alway.

    I heard you say "the Jinjer influence" and I laughed my ass off. If there was any influence going on, it was the other way around. Opeth predates that crappy band Jinjer. Jinjer cannot carry Opeth's dirty toilet water.

    • @JON.HOUSE24
      @JON.HOUSE24  Рік тому +1

      I guess I just figured everyone knew Opeth is one of Jinjer's biggest influences so I wasn't super attentive to my phrasing.
      Also, wholeheartedly disagree. Jinjer is an incredible band. And while they don't have the catalog or presence that Opeth does, they're approaching excellence in their own right. Check out some of Roman's guitar playthroughs or their live shows. Jinjer is fucking legit.
