The sun came out! This was a lovely afternoon spent strolling the boardwalk, beach and the sidewalks in the town of Long Beach. It’s been many years since we’ve been here, and things have changed a bit, but this little town has kept its beachy charm and is filled with lots of great places to eat, drink, and shop. Once again, Dave let me wander on my own to peek in some windows and record some footage, and talk to the local folks. Like Dan.
I wrote about Dan in one of my community tab posts, but I’ll mention him here as he was a pretty neat ol’ guy. He found me as I was filming, and started telling me his story about how he helped get that statue of Lewis and Clark off the ship. He is a lifetime fan of that heroic duo, and began his adventures at the age of ten on the Missouri River, and has physically traced their route for most of his life. Before I could ask about the claws that draped across his chest, he was gone. As quick as he came out of nowhere…. poof. He disappeared.
Since the sun was shining, we made the most of our day and continued on to explore a little more of Cape Disappointment State Park. We took a short walk to Bell’s Overlook, where there is a nice view of the Long Beach peninsula below, and where a World War II bunker still hides in the earth.
In the evening, we set out to hike up to the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, but my main interest was Deadman’s Cove. A truly breathtaking location, that I had all to myself during the golden glow of evening light. I had a hard time navigating the path, as there is a false trail, but I got there, and had to scale the cliff using a fixed rope someone had affixed to some roots. That was an experience I probably won’t be doing again. Not at my age. Was it worth it? Ohhhhh yes! It was magical, and you’d have to see it in person to know why.
We made our way up to the Cape Disappointment lighthouse, where there is an outstanding view of the gaping maw of the mighty Columbia. Now, this lighthouse, may be looking a little rough around the edges. But she stands, proud and tall, shining out to sea with her fourth-order Fresnel lens intact, installed in 1898. The original lens was moved to the North Head lighthouse, which is the one I have mentioned before, and is on display at the Lewis and Clark visitor center. It is the visitor center you see perched on the cliff near the end of this video.
I have a few more videos from this trip, and I am learning that as much as I love making content, I need to practice the “less is more” approach when filming.😉
Well, this is getting long. Sigh. I do that. Thanks for reading and watching! And by the time you finish reading this, I’ll be off on another camping adventure this weekend. More about that later! Enjoy the coast, and… I’ll catch ya next time!♥️
