Growing out BLACK HAIR DYE time-lapse (1 year & 6 months of hair growth)

  • Hey guys!! :) So in today's video, I'll be sharing a time lapse of me growing out black boxed dye to my natural hair colour! I filmed this over the last year and a half (a little over.. it was about 567 days), and I decided to chop it off once it got into a bob. I'm still shocked to see my virgin hair, as I haven't seen it since I was 5 years old... and tbh I don't even remember it back then. I've been colouring my hair since I was 5/6 years old because my mom's a hairdresser, from blonde highlights, platinum blonde, light brown, red, pink, and then jet black. I dyed my hair jet black first in 2017, and when I tried to change it in 2019, it was really difficult to get the colour out and I was stuck with red hair! Even after I visited my mom in Canada who dyed it light brown, it still always faded back to red... the only real way to get rid of the dye was for me to break the cycle and just grow it out. It was really scary starting the journey because I thought it would take FOREVER... but the year passed by so fast, and the liberty of not worrying about touching up roots or worrying about undertones has been sooo nice. A group called the silver sisters on Instagram was the first time I saw people just letting their gray hair grow, and it really inspired me, so I hope I've done the same to any of you watching, and have inspired you to take the plunge if you've been thinking about it! :)

I come back here every once in a while, because i'm currently in the process of growing out my natural hair color and this helps me stay sane. This is one of the hardest things that i've ever done. I constantly look bald

I dyed mine forever and two years ago i decided I needed to see what my true color was. I had grown it out for over a year and had 1 color correction to blend my natural color with my previous color and it ended up being a beautiful dirty blonde. I wanted it all to be that color so I chopped off all the colored hair and it was ti my shoulders. I HATED it after that and bleached the crap out of it and killed it all within 5 months. I shaved it all off 4 months ago and am regrowing it all back. I love the color it is now lol.

Well I had red hair and bleached it leaving a bit of root that was already grown out of my natural hair
Now I keep up a few hair strands like something between highlights/balayage and do this less and less.
I feel like it’s a really natural looking way of growing out to natural hair
But unfortunately black dye is hard to bleach evenly and nicely (you probably know as hairdresser haha)

When I grew my hair out I waited for 2 months so I’d have roots and then I shaved my head. I couldn’t stand the look of grown out roots on myself, lol. I’m in my mid 20’s and I’ve been greying since I was 8 (yes, seriously) and it gets more noticeable with age so I decided to just let it happen lol.

If Virgin black hair is dyed blonde how long before new hair comes back as black
      Indian man hair
If I don’t do roots for bleaching
How long will blond highlights last
I want to try blond once but want regular black to be ready in a few months

As a person with very dark brown hair I always loved this light brown/blondish colour. It would never suit me but I always swoon when I see this colour on others. And for the people with this hair colour, IT'S NOT BORING, it's gorgeous, it gives me a soft vibe, sultry, I don't know how to explain it. Yeah maybe very dark brown hair it's trendy now as it was platinum blonde for many decades, but don't think that the shades in between these extremes are not beautiful.

I’ve been doing this too, it’s been so hard. For years I wanted to try growing out my natural colour but always got annoyed by my roots cause it made me look so washed out when they’d start growing out, so then I’d dye and start over but last august I committed to just growing it out 🥰 and now I like how my natural colour looks once it’s a bit grown out. I still have a long way to go till the black is gone bc my hair is almost touching my butt, it’s definitely a test of patience sometimes and then seeing old photos with the dark nearly black hair and I miss it, and I worry that I won’t look as good with my natural colour 🥺 watching you grow yours out has helped me stay committed to growing mine out. I won’t do a big chop like you did, I don’t have the face shape for it at all but you look so adorable with it !!!

Thank you! Literally 5 weeks in to this process myself. I'm 44 now and have been dyeing my hair black since I was 18. Unfortunately, my health has gotten so bad, I physically can't deal with dyeing it any more so was going to go and have it corrected in a salon but had a reaction to the dye patch test. So I'm having to do it the long way. And the urge to cave is so strong! I'm a light golden brown that goes lighter in the summer so my roots look flat out blonde against the black. I've bought lots of nice hats and hair accessories to get me through it. My hair is only shoulder length now and I have it trimmed every 8 weeks, it also grows really fast so I'm hoping it won't take too long. But it's really a journey. People around are going to have to get used to it as well as myself lol

Also, I think your natural hair color is beautiful. It has a lot of depth to it. Looking at the color in different lightings might help you to nurture a greater appreciation for your own natural color more. Like there's natural light with direct sunlight and natural light with little sunlight. And virgin hair colors look completely different between them! You start to see the small variations across your own head, and it's really cool! :)

I admire the patience and commitment! I couldn't do it as a natural blonde and ended up coloring my hair red as a "stepping stone" before going back to blonde
I dyed my hair black for years due to having a "Goth" aesthetic until I decided I still wanted to dress the same with my natural color! Blonde roots grown out with hair dyed black gives an unflattering illusion that your hair is thinning or that you're "going bald" so I didn't have the patience

Omg! I’m doing this. I usually do my roots every month. It is constantly fading out to reddish brown and I’m a soft summer with bright blue eyes and olive skin too!! I did black for years! Now in my 30s over the years I’ve gone through level 3/4/5 and I’m naturally a 6 like you. I’m also struggling with all my basics being black, I have lots of black jackets that I don’t feel are me anymore. Like a couple of moto jackets and a trench! I’ll just make sure the under layers are a soft summer colour. Thanks for the inspiration 😊

Oh my god this video was SO helpful in so many ways it’s insane. I’ve been contemplating growing my hair out because I too haven’t seen my natural hair color since i was like 8/9 which is crazy to me, and just like you said I don’t want to start going grey in however many years before ever getting a chance to really know my own hair when it’s natural. I didn’t even think of that so that gave me extra encouragement. I also have been dying my hair black for years, and a bunch of other colors and it’s so expensive and stressful esp with black and trying to not get it on anything every month that i have to dye it. All i have to go off of are old pictures where it looks dirty blonde but mine might come out light brown like yours I’m guessing even though it looks super light on my roots right now. I know this journey is going to be so awkward but I think I’m ready to really do it, thank you for this video it was so nice to see how it’s going to look through the process I’m so scared of feeling absolutely ugly but this looked so doable you still looked gorgeous through all of it and once it grew out a bit you could hardly tell since it was darker, thank you thank you thank you!!!!

You have inspired me to grow my natural hair colour out ! In my case I have bleached blonde hair and my natural hair colour is maybe a tone lighter than yours. Thanks to seeing how gorgeous you look in your natural hair colour I finally decided to just let it grow. I’ve been growing my hair out for exactly 1 year and 2 months. My roots are so long now and I’m in love ! I can’t wait to have it all one colour… Honestly I think that’s the key is to just let it grow without trying to colour match it or correct it. I’ve come back to this video multiple times to keep going. Tip for the girls who have bleached ends like I do : I would recommend you cut your hair to chop of the dyed bits even before your natural hair reaches your desired length. It’ll cause the roots to look longer and it’s a nice effect as well ! I wish everyone good luck on their hair growing journey. Dark blonde hair is also pretty and in my opinion the prettiest I’ve had on me❤

So another, expensive, option is to do what I did but you have to know your natural color. I had box dye black on top of red, blue, purple, splat bleach(I know I know awful!). So I did my research and found a great stylist to do a color correction to as close to my natural color as possible. I went in with realistic expectation but got very lucky that after 1 visit it was extremely close. My natural color is a goldish dark blond/light brown. So from there I just let it grow and it blended great without having to go through the awkward phase. It did get more damage so I ended up cutting it a little shorter after 6 months. I just wanted to say that this is another option because some people work in beauty and stuff and it would be harder for them to go through the growing out stage. Again though it was expensive and it took allll day.

I think your natural hair suits you really well! It makes your skin look so beautiful and makes your eyes pop (they would pop no matter what hair color though let’s be real) I was kind of unhappy with my hair as a whole because I thought it was really dull so I really dove into making sure my scalp was healthy and my hair looks soooo much better now. You said you have some scalp issues so I recommend looking into the innate life scalp treatments and basically all their other products as well as calia naturals for shampoo and conditioner. If you have a healthy scalp, your hair will automatically look brighter and shinier as a result :)

I dont know how i stumbled upon this video, but i have been looking for one since i decided to grow out my natural hair colour! Though i have split dye, blonde and black. Its been a year now and for anyone trying to grow their black out - have patience!
First 7 to 8 months were so slow but after that you could actually start seeing progress :)

Also to mention I have dyed my hair different colours for over 13 years. I want to see my natural hair colour and also get long and healthy hair, since black isnt the easiest colour to get out without damage. Growing it out is the best haha!

I really enjoyed this video. I think what you discovered at the end is really interesting and the older we are the more we learn about ourselves even if it’s small silly things like what our under tones are or what colours look best on us. I think this cut even shapes your body different I know that sounds weird but the short hair shows your figure more.

It made my day I don't know why but the way u looked at the camera was really funny and adorable .I've never dyed my hair but it was interesting to see how hair color can change so many things about how you look and sometimes boring makes u hot 🌞 it really looks good on you with short hair 👍🏻 + Please don't hesitate to talk too much, trust me, we love it (i feel nothing i said make sense but i'm not really good in english)

i have exactly the same thing as you! i started coloring my hair when i was 14 and im 27 now. got all colors under the sun but stayed with black for years now. Bleached it to try make it like my natural color again 2 years ago but it turned out orange and dead. So colored it black again. I also got the exactly the same hair color as you. Look really pale with my black hair and always need some extra make up to look healthy. I really find this video motivating and inspiring! I havent colored my hair now for 8 weeks and i think im gonna stick through it and let it grow out like you did.

I've been growing out my natural hair for SO long now and lately have been just so unhappy with the difference between my ashy, light roots and super warm darker ends. I've started to feel the urge to go to a salon to try and bleach my ends to match my roots, but I just feel like that would be so expensive and probably wouldn't even match them exactly. You inspired me to keep having patience 💗 I've had long hair for most of my life and am scared to chop it off, but you look SO cute with that cut. I'm a fair olive as well!

I obviously regret losing my progress so I'm starting over, and this video gives me strength! I'll revist it when I need a reminder to stick with it. Thanks for posting this ❤

I’m going through a midlife crisis or something and I really want change. I bought a bunch of red hair dye because I was gonna go ginger but now seeing you with black idk what to do. I love the blonde but hate how harsh it is :( and black looks so good on your skin!! I really want to try and maybe save some bucks

I did the same thing. I colored my ash blond hair dark brown/black for years. I did my make up very dramatic because my skin looked so pale and washed out against the dark hair. I actually never wore black because it would just blend in with my hair. I started by accident during COVID lockdown and just continued from there. I had my hair dresser give me lots of high lights in my lengths to help balance it out, we did several sessions during about a years time. I am so glad I did that because like you I wasn’t having fun anymore and I felt like it aged me. I now can wear black again with out feeling like it is swallowing me up lol. I love this thank you for sharing your journey you look beautiful.

Just what I needed to see right now. Born with light brown hair and always wanted dark hair so dyed it dark in my teens. Now I'm 33 and it just feels like too much work to upkeep. My roots have come through and my hubs is like whoa your hair is light but it looks so weird so hats have become my BFF. This inspired me to keep going though. Your natural hair color is so unique and beautiful. Looks like a brown hair color people would ask for when they go to the salon!

I started dying my hair box black when I was 13, because I was a competitive dancer and my coach told me to do it... worst idea ever!
I'm now 20 years old and didn't even remember what my natural hair colour was. I've been growing it out for 3 months now and I can see it is a similar colour to yours, and I also have pale skin.
Honestly, I resonate so so much with your thoughts at the end. I wish I had done it sooner too.

I remember when you were barely growing it out. You did it! It looks great. Yeah I remember how light it was in the beginning. I on the other hand have only dyed it once when I was a kid (not my idea) and have always thought about dying it. But honestly hearing you talk about all the work that goes into it sounds like it's not for me. I love not worrying about my hair lol. I love your natural color tho 👍

I'm just growing out my hair at the moment... I was dying it very dark brown, plum and dark cherry for years! I'm on 9months now and I'm really ready to just go dye it lol... but would un do all the hard work... I have found it horrible as I have so many greys! Just can't wait to start again with some very light natural colours. Thanks for ur video!x

I’m in the process of doing this. Last time I dyed my hair was in April of 2022. It’s been more than 6 months and I hated it in the beginning. The first 2-3 months it looked horrible (my natural hair are way lighter than yours). I did it for the same reason, I was tired of having to maintain the color. Can’t wait to chop it all off! Seeing this was inspiring to keep up, I’m almost there! ❤

This was fun to watch! I’m not sure I could do this! I’ve been doing something to my hair since I was 12 and my mom wouldn’t let me go blonde so I started putting lemon juice on it 😝 Now I’m 41 and I can tell by the roots it’s about 40% gray!

Major inspiration. Dyed my hair black in May of last year, tried growing it out but caved in September. Haven't dyed it since and I'm not committed to growing it out. I've also been dying my hair since a really young age, and it feels extremely dead no matter what I do. This video is so encouraging ahh thank you :))

I made it 8 months growing out my dyed black then caved and had it done professionally red. She did leave my virgin hair untouched though, and I’ve just been using a semi permanent like manic panic on them. So technically I’m still growing out my natural color, just lifted the black out. I’m doing henna all over this week though lol.
I think your natural color is beautiful and it’s so shiny and healthy. Looks amazing on you! Love the cut too!
