Both are superb specimens, exemplified by the wonderful playing. Great job! I hear the presence of the D41 sitting a little further back, with alot of bell like ringing and overtones. Very spacious and rich sounding. The D35 is a bit more in your face and fundamental in tone. It's less rich, but stronger in sound. Horses for courses.
I played a D42 30 years ago that I’ve always regretted not buying, incredible guitar, the one that got away. I have a 69 D35 that’s the best one I’ve ever heard. I added bone saddle, nut and pins, to compensate for the bass from the 3 piece back, it’s an amazing guitar. I’ve got a few others that I love but Martins are still the king of the flattop to me.
Im glad i saw you video brother..the 35 just has that extra RING to it..im getting one tomorrow from a local mom pop shop in Texas tomorrow , I can’t wait! And who says that the big stores can give good prices, they took 12% the list price! I can’t wait! They are a Martin repair center too so im covered..your video helped me decide between a 28 and 35.thank you bro!
I play a somewhat older worn-out Martin D35, but when I put new strings on, it really comes alive. 012's are swell, but let me tell, they sure make that guitar ring. 010's my friend, are easier to bend yet the prettier they sing. I play it in the daytime, I play it in the night, I play it when I'm feelin' blue, it makes me feel alright. I play it when the Sun shines, I play it when it rains. I play when my heart aches and it takes away the pain. I play it in the early morn and in the afternoon, it just does something to me, it really makes me swoon. I play a somewhat older worn-out Martin D35 and I still have no regrets, I play that thing so much these days, I've worn out all the frets. So I went and bought another one, the younger of the two, so now I have two sweethearts and I don't know what to do. The younger is the pretty one, the older is the wise, the older breaks my heart and the younger feeds my eyes.... So tell me Tom, please tell me, what's a soul to do? How dare I play the one and to the other still be true?
I have a 1963 Martin D-28 that my father bought new (In the picture). He's been gone for 42 years, but I can put my ear to that guitar, and still hear him playing.
I have a 2018 Ambertone D41 and it has, what I call, a "shimmer" to the tone that I hear in this D41, as well! It's the special quality that made me purchase that guitar over every other Martin I tried out. Great playing!!
I have the same guitar, a 2018 reimagined. It has that shimmer too. I have four Martins, two of which are vintage, but the D-41 is the best sounding by far. It is so resonant.
Once I pick up and play an American made Martin they all sound good to me. I recently bought a 000-18 and while shopping I played a D41 and a D45. The store didn't have a D-35, so I've never played one of those, but the 000-18 I purchased sounded just as good to me as the D41 and it has a shorter scale length which I really like. They just make great guitars. Now, once you drop down to the Road Series and others that are made in Mexico there is definitely a big difference in sound. There are a few that I can't believe Martin puts their name on, but when it comes to the American made ones they are just unbeatable in my opinion. I've owned Taylor, Blueridge, Epiphone, and Takamine, and they don't stack up to a Martin. I do have an Alvarez that has a wonderful sound, but it's a different sound than my 000-18.
Thanks Phil! Over the weekend, I was 100% preferring the D35 for this piece. But when I came to record it, the 41 felt/played so great, it changed my mind.
Both of those guitars sound really great and your touch really makes them sing. Thanks for posting. Beautiful tune to show those guitars off, and the tempo was perfect! I had to listen several times.
There is a shine to the 41 the 35 just can't touch. Both are beautiful and great sounding instruments though. That 40 series of Martin guitars is special.
I watched a video a few days ago. I think the guy was a Martin employee, but I can't say for sure. I also think that he said that anything above the D-35 had expensive appointments, but was no better constructed for sound. I have owned a D-15, a D-28, and a D-35, and I loved all of them. I loved the D-35 the most. It was easy to play, and the sound was the best of any guitar I have ever owned. The D-28 may have projected better, but I had the guitars almost forty years apart, so I couldn't say for sure.
I've heard the same thing about the higher-numbered models. I've also heard that there might be less 'variability' among the higher ones (i.e. perhaps tighter QA controls?). Either way, I bought the D-41 after playing it in a shop, and regardless of the bling -- it was the nicest sounding, easiest to play acoustic that I've ever touched!
Great video. Nice demo of the tonality. I gave this a like and I'm not in a habit of doing that. The d41 sounds better in every way but in certain rare instances, I feel like I would choose the 35 due to the slightly less "perfect" tone. The high end is no match and that just underscores the amount of definition on the 41 vs the 35. The 41 is also tighter and more elegant. But I can put down money that some people would pay to NOT have elegant tone. Lol. I'm certainly not one of those players but I can understand it. Anyways great video as I've mentioned already.
Thank you! Something that isn't easy to get across in the videos is how *great* both these guitars are to play -- even though they differ in sound, they both feel amazing in the hands.
Both Beautiful sounding instruments, at this level I honestly can't hear the difference. The devil is in the details of which one is better or nicer, both are keepers that's for certain.👍 Thanks for the review, Cheers
Great playing! For the money D35 takes it for me. If I’m spending over 5k on a Martin it’s going to be from the 60s or earlier …….or have the word “Authentic” after the model designation. 😁
If you're playing at a cafe people would say both guitars sound beautiful. But, when you compare the two side by side you can clearly hear that the D41 is a higher quality instrument.
Such an interesting video. I have a 2001 D45, which sounds very much like the D41 here: perhaps even more shimmery. I also have a 1967 Brazilian Rosewood D28. If I A-B that with my D45, the D45 sounds weak... Weird stuff
Both sound great. I suspect the D41 sounds better in the room. The D35 has a more mid forward sound and seems to record better imo. I would take the 41 just for the bling.
Felt like the D35 performance seemed less aggrresive but both are wonderful and the audience would not notice any difference at anyway. Even guitarists don't all agree. Either one is a win
Im ready to order the D35 tomorrow but when I heard this video makes me want the D41, you think the $2k price difference worth it for the D41? I was trying to find the difference and the only difference I can see is just cosmetic, that abalone and neck, is another better difference on construction, that makes this guitar sounds better? Thanks
Been playing D41 and D35 a lot this week - and I love them both! My two feel very similar in the hand, which is one of the reasons I bought the 35, because it plays almost as well as the 41 - in fact the 35's neck is slightly easier for me to get my left thumb round. The sonic differences come from the 35's 3-piece back. If I wanted a strummer, I'd reach for the 35. For single-note melody stuff, the 41's got more sweetness too it. I'm not a huge fan of the 41's 'bling' - but I don't mind it either; if I coulda bought the same guitar plain, without the abalone, I probly woulda.
D-41 is sharper and the D-35 has that nice fuzzy middy mid-range that makes it a joy to sing along with and I think that makes the D-35 popular with singersongwriters. The D-41 is beautifully focused and sharper and if you are a strong singer, you can sing above the guitar while a less powerful singer could probably sound best with the D-35. If basing on just tone and nothing else, the D-41 is a notch sweeter, crisper, purer. I'd take either one.
Both sound great, and if I had not just heard them side by side, I would have bet there'd be no difference. But the D-35 sounded more compressed or almost muted compared to the D-41. Now I'm really GASing for a 41...

That's a very good 35, but I suspect that's an exceptional 41. I've played a bunch of acoustics and not seen any as across the board solid as that one.
Nice playing! Do they both have the same nut width and neck profile? You seemed to hit the notes cleaner on the D41. I think that one has a 1 3/4 nut width. I know I do better on a 1 3/4 vs a 1 11/16. But, nice demo. I really enjoyed it.
I think that once you move into the 3 and 4 series martins, theirs not a lot of difference in the sound. They all sound great. Looks are what your paying for.
Also note both of these are beautiful to play, but the 41 is a *little* better, partly in terms of the high E string on the D35 being a little easy to slip off the neck (which could be fixed by cutting a new nut, but it's fine as long as I remember when I fret it!)
Yeah - the D35 plays a little louder than the 41. Although it's totally possible that when I recorded I played louder, I notice a slight difference in volume when I switch between 'em when practicing

It’s all bullshit. The people that say that a 35 or 41 is for this or that knows “Nothing” ! For me Martin tone is what I’m looking for. You can’t go by the model. Each and every guitar, no matter the number on it sounds different. Find the guitar that has your sound and that’s the best.

This is where your bullshit hits the fan, there is a major difference between the 35 and the 41 (and 28, and 42, and 45) the 35 has 1/4 inch top bracing. And that is THE difference. I do agree that guitars are case by case. I have played many Martin dogs.
A D2r is as good if not better than any Martin made, same specs as the best Martin makes. Why did Martin Discontinue the D2r is because they were buying it over their high priced Martins,D2r Was $950.

Amen!👍
This is where your bullshit hits the fan, there is a major difference between the 35 and the 41 (and 28, and 42, and 45) the 35 has 1/4 inch top bracing. And that is THE difference.
I do agree that guitars are case by case. I have played many Martin dogs.
The D35 sounds brighter while the D41 sounds warmer. The D41 sounds like a well aged guitar.
If you did a blind comparison you couldn't tell any difference. ;)
D41 is way warmer. D35 sounds bright.
We have different definitions of bright and warm. Most would consider the opposite.
both sounds chinese made.....
You are deaf or deluded Mr "Old School."
A D2r is as good if not better than any Martin made, same specs as the best Martin makes. Why did Martin Discontinue the D2r is because they were buying it over their high priced Martins,D2r Was $950.
You are very fortunate to believe that.
