I’d have to go with the Martin in this demo. I still find the Martin projects a thickness and distinct tonal character that I don’t hear from the a lot of competitors. I personally own a 2006 HD-28 that even when compared to a D-45 in my living room the HD-28 had more volume and bottom end. It’s an absolute cannon. However the Boucher did sound fabulous. But may I also add that if I could play guitar like J.P Cormier a plywood guitar would sound great.

The Boucher is much better over all. The Martin has a muddy bottom but that is the "Martin" sound. You get it even more on a D35. Which is my opinion is the best Martin there is. You can make that Boucher sound like the Martin with the right pick but you will never get that Martin to sound like the Boucher.

The strings on the Boucher are supporting each other like voices in a great choir. As a result, the sound is better balanced and rich in stacked overtones. Sometimes the bass strings on the Martin overpower the treble strings, and they don't always sing together.

Thank you JP! Two great guitars! A comparaison that many have waited for. An interesting factor to consider is the age of both guitars. The Boucher seems to be only a few months old. The Martin is at least four years old. The Boucher is still pretty “green” so still a lot of time to open and settle.
    Thank you very much JP!

On full stereo Jvc system I’m hearing a warmer beautifully toned Martin when strumming. The Boucher is slightly more articulate which gives it a colder tone blend when strumming.
Boucher has more punch on the bottom and top in finger style.
Regular picking they seemed pretty even.
I’d have to play them personally if I were to deciding to buy.

Got to clear something up. In the states a Martin D41 is 5000Us at sweetwater. At Sound Pure in North Carolina a Studio goose Torrified Addy Indian rosewood is 5500Us. I will say Martin is ripping you guys up North though for sure but in the States they are pretty close.

I'm not a good player, but have owned martins and played many that weren't that big sounding. but that one is huge. what I get from those recorded (could sound different in the room) is the boucher is more airy and a little more even. the martin has huge mids and bottom. It's a cannon.
I would gladly play either -they're both wonderful.

Boucher, hands down. I totally agree, Martin has the history and nostalgia, but Boucher has the quality of wood and craftsmanship that shines throughout their lineup. Had the privilege of having a great conversation with J.P. at the 12th Fret in Toronto after a great showcasing of a huge variety of Boucher guitars. When you hear them live and play them, you'll know. Thanks for sharing, keep the strumming coming.

  • @CamMacMastermusic

My pick is the Boucher …… Listening through focal speakers my opinion is …. I don’t hear a significant volume ( db ) difference between the two. The Martin seems to have a louder lower tone (which is really only problematic in a studio) but the Boucher is right there with it but with more of an ultra clarity response. If you pick only one string to listen to it’s so easily distinguished from the others. Where as the Martin as awesome as it is doesn’t seem to stay in its own lane at the buffet. Kudos on a great video.

To be fair Martin isn't 'hand voiced' or torrefied like the Boucher. Martin only does VTS(baked/torrefied top) after 2015 and doesn't do them on ALL of their standard guitars. Martin is worth it if u go Custom Shop, used and get the torrefied vts too! Ive got a Custom Shop 000 w/VTS and its well worth it.

If you have a chance to, you HAVE to review the new model ( since 2021) Alvarez MDR70SB. It's a 12 fret, slotted headstock, sloped shoulder, 1 3/4 inch at nut, solid AAA American Sitka top, solid EIR back and sides guitar. I was at Morrell Music in Bristol, Tennessee, and played some high end stuff in the high end room, and saw this guitar hanging there. When I played it for 5 seconds, I knew I had to get this guitar. It sounded better than anything I played in the room. The store has sold 3 of these in 2 days. The moment you play one, you will know why my reaction was what it was.

I highly recommend listening to comparisons with the tv-stereo-headphones and then comparing because the results will change radically.
Listened on the tv (eq'd for live sports) and the Martin sounded louder and brighter/sharper…maybe slightly better and the Boucher sounded more balanced, quieter, silky and less punchy.
Listened with my on ear headphones I use for exercising but they were too bass heavy to tell what was going on.
Listened with some cheap but decent over ear headphones and the Boucher came alive…It sounded as or nearly as loud but sweeter and balanced and the Martin sounded more mid scooped with bright highs and booming bass but also a bit synthetic/metallic compared to the Boucher which sounded more rounded/silky/natural.
Both are fabulous and it's a matter of opinion. If I were to join a bluegrass band I'd probably still choose this particular Martin (having not listened in person) but for everything else I think I'd go with the Boucher.
Once again after listening to the demo 3 different ways and getting very different results. I cannot wait until I can demo a Boucher in Person as I was just about and may still buy a 000-28 because I like the short scale but now I'm hesitant until I play a Boucher OM even tho it'll be 2k more than the 000-28 and full scale.

You hit the nail right on the head. The Martin has a unique sound, it was made for 'Bluegrass'. I own a 1965 J50 and a 1967 J45 Gibson. I play a 1982 Stelling Bellflower. , not that well, lol, I'm a guitar player at heart, but, the Martin sound was made to play along with the banjo, hence 'Bluegrass' sound. I would not part with my Gibson's for either, especially my J45. The Gibson sound is all together different. "My" sound, as is every guitar, that hits some one's heart strings. Like fine wine , 'preference'...Now, I gather the insults will be arriving to me. That's , ok. I love the 'Old' Gibson sound. '"My" heart strings'...Great episode. Love your UA-cam programs...👍

Great video AND absolutely beautiful playing. Thank you! Perhaps this can be said for ANY “high end” guitar, but one thing I know with a high end Martin is that it could actually turn out to be a good “investment” too! Not sure that can be said for most others? (Not that any owner would want to sell such a great guitar, but if they wanted to or had to - they could actually make some money with a good Martin). Regardless, both of these are obviously absolutely amazing guitars. One question about this “showdown”: does the age of each guitar come into play here too? I’ve heard that a good acoustic will sound even better with age, like a fine wine (assuming it’s properly cared for). Anyway, for my part - all things considered - the Martin wins this showdown!

    • @SlimeyGuitarStrings

As an investor/flipper/collector the Martin probably makes more sense. But they're instruments, pick the one that touches your soul when you play. If neither of these did that, keep walking and find a guitar that does. The guitar that makes you want to play is the best investment and if if it makes other people want to play too, they'll want to buy it. :)

    • @howabouthetruth2157

You also have to consider the fact that this Boucher is a much "greener" guitar vs the Martin featured in this video that is at least 3.5 years older........and as you probably already know: great acoustic guitars when bought brand new, need years to "open up" and sound their best. Another thing to consider is the fact that the compression of uploading a video onto youtube does alter the true sound. JP stated that IN THE ROOM, the Boucher is much louder, and with better string to string tonal definition........all in a guitar that is much younger than the Martin. But hey, to each their own.

Great playing and good review. Proud that a fellow Canadian is presenting it so well. I agree the Boucher has better sustains articulate like Collings. But what I don’t buy is that you cannot afford the Martin. At that price range you can easily make up the difference if you really like the guitar. You own several Bouchers and even though they are reasonable price they are still not cheap. Maybe what you’re really saying is that Martin’s are not worth more money than a guitar that in your ear is the best you’ve ever played.

The finger picking demo is not great and kinda muted, thus, did not do these two great guitars justice. I have a d41 and had played bg-52 many times. These are two different guitars acoustically and aesthetically although many people think they sound similar. The Martin sounds earthy and woody while the Boucher sounds a bit warm and crispy. I like the Boucher look but I like the Martin playability. Sound wise it’s a toss up although the Boucher may be a little louder.

Hey JP! I love your channel so much. I just wanted to point out: that comment you made that the only difference between the 41 and 45 is the added pearl, I read a while back on the martin website that the greatest stock of wood that martin has is specifically used on 45s and the custom shop. I think I also read that the top luthiers for Martin also work on the 45s and custom shop. So according to Martin, their best reserves of spruce and rosewood go on the 45s and custom shop guitars. Not sure if it is totally true or a marketing tactic, but I just figured I would leave that here.

  • @1funkybasslady

Wait..in the beginning of this video you said you weren't going to make any commentary until after you play the instruments! Then right off the bat you say the Boucher is the best guitar you have ever played or owned. Then you go on to sing the praises of the Martin and say it is your "dream guitar." ???😁🤔 Now, as for my take..my ears hear a full richness in the Martin that is not there in the Boucher. Also, the Martin sounds more balanced between treble and bass ends of the instrument. The Boucher, to my ear, has a "chimey" sound overall. Since I love full low end in acoustic guitars, I am a huge fan of the Martin. That said, I must confess I own both the D-41 Reimagined and a Custom Shop D-45, so I am truly biased.😁 The Martin in this video truly is superb! Thanks for yet another wonderful video!

As you say, there really is no comparison but it's the Boucher that can't compare to the Martin. John, I have been a sound engineer my entire life, I would not care if the best guitar is a Chinese Vietnamese inbred guitar, What you want is the sound you got out of that Martin. I am so sorry to have to tell you this. I am no "fan" of any brand, just a fan of "the right sound" That Martin is the definition of "acoustic guitar" The Boucher is a good guitar. The Martin is a great Guitar. I suspect you already know this. I too have been in a bad marriage.
Sorry John. I should also mention that the comparison could not have been made without your articulate detailed and nuanced picking, just what is needed for a detailed analysis.

As far as I'm concerned there is an ocean between them (!!!) The Martin D41 sounds so much better to my ears.

Here's the thing...trying to compare acoustic guitar tone on You Tube is futile. I am sure that in person the tone, feel and resonance of the Martin will win hands down. While the Boucher is a very nice guitar, it will not hold it's value the same in the long run...besides Boucher is one of your sponsors...right, so we have to take your word for it...but actually the Martin even sounds better through my headphones.

I have a D-35 and a BG-52-BG. They are both awesome. The Martin is fabulous with sitka spruce. The neck is great. Both are super great. They have very different sounds. Both play like a dream.

A very respectful and fair description of these two extraordinary instruments. I have a Martin D-41 since 1972. Year of construction 70/71? Unfortunately typical neck break, but professionally by Prof. Luthier repaired. Gray original case that now tends into the gray - greenish in excellent condition. Except for the break and the reddish reeling of the guitar ceiling, except for a tiny quirk in almost new condition. Really unbelievable, I know. Tone: indescribable! Thanks for your great video - greetings from Germany - Manfred

Martin sounds good when I'm watching him play, but Boucher sounds better when I'm just listening.

The Mic knows which one is better! And when its recorded more posters have chosen the martin, and I agree. Therefore the boucher is not as you say 2 1/2 times as loud, it just isn't true but it is biased.

I have no horse in the race here, and to my reliable ears I say the Martin has the edge. Then again, we are all biased and don't quite hear the same, whether we know it or not. One of the Boucher choosers in the comments below waxed poetic about its choir-like voices. Me thinks hearing is not an entirely objective experience.

Seriously? The Martin sounds far better than the Boucher at least over a mike…Boucher sounds midrangy to me, the Martin has it all.

JP, you're getting better at this all the time. Great video, and review.
It does look like the Boucher has teensy fret markers. (ha, at least to my aging eyes) Maybe hard to see them in dim stage lighting?

When you drop down to d the boucher won hands down, both sound so similar, but the clarity of the boucher takes the cake.

I haven’t played a Boucher yet, I plan to eventually get my grubby paws on one. I have a very unique and heavily modified or heavily repaired Martin D28 that is featured a few times on my channel. But I also have in my possession a 1978 John Greven guitar made of Brazilian rosewood and some old growth spruce. It’s easily the most powerful guitar I’ve ever heard. But on stage I play Eastman guitars almost exclusively these days because they are much more affordable and easily equipped with a pickup.

I think the martin came through the video better except for the finger style. also, the 41 is sitka which is noted for being quieter than Adi. if you want to pay it forward, i'll test out that martin for a while

    Thank you for the video.
Did both guitars had the same strings?
For my ears the bass on martin had more resonance, a bit richer tone.
The Boucher had a bit more even tone across the strings.
So it’s a matter of taste. I would like to hear them with more hard strumming to hear what happened to the sound of the guitars.
One thing for sure You are a Great guitar player! Thanks again!

Ok. I just bought a Boucher last July and shortly after I had the chance to visit the shop where Robin Boucher (my guitar maker god) and his team make those great guitar. I bought a SG51. Rosewood. I tried many many guitar (Gibson, Martin, Taylor ) in every price range. Didnt matter to me. I focused only on the result , the emotion , the projection of the sound. All sounded good but not as great as Boucher dreadnought or om. It took me 4 years to decide as I wasnt in a hurry (already had a guitar). As a guitar player I do not deserve that instrument. It s only a reward for many years of doing home improvment myself. But what I can tell you is that they do sound better. Here , this will sound strange but, I think the Martin was slightly better. Great video. Thank JP.
Update. The Boucher is better. After listening the video for the third time.

Maybe we all have a certain sound that we gravitate towards. I'm biased towards Martin and thought this d 41 was great as expected. More to my liking. Not muddy but very good projection. The other guitar was also very clear. Admittedly listening on my cell phone is probably not a reliable comparison.
