Could really hear the contrast between them ... the 28 was bright and punchy ... the 35 sounded like the whole band, lead, rhythm, and bass. Really illustrates why the 28 is the quintessential bluegrass axe while the 35 is the quintessential singer-songwriter axe.
Delvin, if I close my eyes I can see and hear Tony in your playing. It sounds wonderful. I would choose either guitar but prefer the mellowness of the D28.
I have an HD28 and a D35, both from the late 90s. The contrast in tones I hear in this vid, are exactly what I hear with mine! Excellent playing on this vid!
I’m a D-28 owner/player for over 5 decades. I’ve owned more than a few of them over the years as I’m a professional singer songwriter as well. Your playing is absolutely incredible and really shows off the great sound of both guitars. Still to my ear, the 28 takes the spotlight. The 35 is a fine instrument but the 28 has the sparkle, bass, and magic that lifts it above the 35 in my opinion and experience.
I came here for a comparison and left a subscriber. Your playing demonstration was superb, so much so that I was listening to the music more than comparing tonal difference. At any rate, wonderful job and I look forward to exploring your channel.
Thanks I appreciate you watching, although I don’t consider myself much of a guitar player. I see so many good players these days, players that I wouldn’t pick a guitar up in front of. I really appreciate the kind words and hopefully I can get another video up soon 👍
I did as well! Just subbed. Btw; A humble man says he doesn’t deserve the praise, but the humble man is often the one who does deserves the praise the most. Thanks Delvin!!
Thanks for watching and subscribing I truly appreciate it, but the truth is I don’t deserve any kind of praise at all. I’m just a man recording myself playing a guitar to try and give someone something they can watch without all the negativity and controversy that goes on in the world and hopefully try to inform some people on guitar if I can at least that’s the intent 👍
Great comparison and really great playing, I read your replies to others where you downplay your guitar skills but I say you truly are a great soulful guitar player that reminds me of the great Tony Rice. I recently purchased a D35 and while it’s a beautiful sounding guitar for a variety of styles and the previous owner had installed an LR Baggs Anthem pickup which sounds as acoustic as any pickup I’ve heard so it’s a great guitar but it doesn’t have as much of the bluegrass voice that the HD28 does so I’m thinking of returning it (to guitar center) to get a D28 or an HD28 instead. And the tones I’m hearing in your video seem to back up my thoughts. You play both guitars great but the HD28 just has that classic Martin sound. Do you still own both? If you only kept one which one? Or if you kept both, which do you find yourself using more? Thanks for any reply/info on that question and just thanks for making a very informative video just through your very musical playing.
Thanks Delvin. It's been years since I've played guitars (however my ears haven't forgot) but from your excellent consistency and picking the tone of the D28 seemed a little crisper from the 35. Having said that it would depend greatly on the music I was going to play on which guitar I picked up. Keep on smiling.
Great playing Devin.... great tone on both...What flat pick and thickness do you use? The HD28 wins this shootout as it has more string to string articulation and clarity and a fuller, richer, dryer sound...Some of that comes from it's age and some from its build and scalloped bracing differences from the D35. The lower string heights on the D35 can be heard with slight string buzzing and less resonance and power on pick attack.
What a great find this video was. Amazing playing, and I loved what you said toward the end (shows you have a ton of heart as well as talent). Thanks man, you earned my subscribe.
Through my headphones, the 35 sounded a little tighter and mellow. Probably the lower action and the fact that the hd28 is well broken in and pushing more air. I think it would be helpful to get your thoughts about what you are hearing in the room, because we can’t possibly hear what you hear listening through tiny speakers. Both guitars sound fabulous, and your picking is fantastic. Loved the sound of that drop D tune on the HD28.
That D-28 sounds like the high action increases the volume, but I couldn't say one sounds better than the other. Both sound fantastic, just different. Beautiful fireplace and background for your videos too! Thousands of dollars worth of guitars and millions of dollars worth of talent. The D-28 has a sound like everyone should back up a step.
Phenomenal playing sir, I just bought the D35, and I as well spent a lot of time playing both the HD 28 and the D35, just liked the tone and playability of the D35, BTW, what is that capo you were using?
GREAT comparison! Thank you! I've been thinking about finally picking up a D-28 (not HD) or D-35 and these comparisons help SO much. Based on videos like this and in-peron testing, to MY ears, they BOTH sound great, but I'm leaning toward the D-28. The D-35's high end seems just a bit more prominent and I think the D-28 is "EQ'd" the slightest bit more to my liking.
I am now deciding to buy the HD-28 or the HD-35. Your presentation helped. I like the clarity and punch of the hd-28. BTW, I surely do like your playing, sir. Thank you.
Hi Delvin, I watch your videos a lot! Amazing playing.. I would love to see how you're holding the pick. I'm struggling a lot with the pick. The whole right hand actually. Do you have a video on your channel where you show it? Looking forward to your reaction. Greetz from Holland!
Very nice. Your skillful playing allows both of these beauties to shine. I think the distinctions between the scalloped 5/16” bracing on the HD-28 and the non-scalloped 1/4” bracing on the D-35 are smaller than that physical feature difference might suggest. In its own way, each guitar digs in to deliver rich bass and resonance. One day I’d like to play an HD-35. For now, I love my HD-28. Thanks for a welcome respite from the day.
The D-35 sounds better to my ears. That's probably influenced by the love of my HD-35 though. I've never owned an HD-28, so I guess I can't speak from an unbiased viewpoint. Loved the picking Delvin. Your playing never disappoints!
I came to my first Martin earlier this year, it’s a 1976 D-35. To my ear, the D-35 has a brighter sound than the HD-28. Your remark about how what folks hear in a video in not what they should expect at the guitar store. Since getting mad-35 I’ve had chance to play other Martin’s, at stores and with acquaintances. The D-28’s and D-35’s I’ve played are all different, some better, but again, to my ear the D-35 has a brighter sound across the range. Interesting comparison of instruments.
Exceptional guitar playing by a humble Man ! Thank you for your video comparing these two Martin guitars. I just played these two models 2 weeks ago. I liked each. Johnny Cash liked the D-35 and the music he made on his D-35 is legendary. His Black signature Martin is $5300.00 I played that guitar too. It all come's down to your individual preference, need, and style on which guitar to choose ? I lean toward the D-35 so far, but I am a rookie player. Thank you for your fine video Sir !
He’s right about having to play each guitar in person ! I was looking for a d28 and so I ended playing two d28’s two d35’s and a d18 at three different guitar shops and one of the d35s just had an amazing voice probably one of the best sounding martins I have heard and played that’s the one I left with cherry picked 😊
Thank you for this eye-opening demonstration. I've owned a few d35's. One from the early 70's. I got that guitar for the booming bass response I wanted at the time. Then in 97, I got one - more balanced -like yours. But then in 2018 I played a hd35 and it opened a new vista of enhanced middles and highs. it is as bright as your 28 but with a deeper bass response. I do like the brightness of your 28. It's quite amazing how dissimilar similar guitars are. My 97 d35 sounds just like yours. But I like your 28 sound more. Thanks again.
I have a friend of mine who has a D 35 that I have played on several occasions and I’ll tell you what I love it. I can definitely tell the difference between the two. 😊
Definitely- I can hear the slightly higher action differences between the the 28 and 35. The HD-28 really kicked some butt on the second tune you played. Both guitars are keepers. What ever the action height/set up is on the HD-28. I like it. Great playing and presentation too. 🎧
I have both guitars the d-35 being four years older. Which one do I like best? The one I'm playing at the time. I've had both set up the same so the action are the same. Both have a purpose. I play at church and gig and use both for either. I also have a Gibson j-45 I ad to the mix. You are so right about all guitars of the same make and models aren't the same. If at all possible play the guitar your self.I know some people don't have that luxury but I will not purchase a guitar I haven't played.
First, MAN you can tear it up! Whew that picking! As for the guitars, it's an easy choice for me. Nothing sings quite like a D35 to my ears, hence why I own one. Keep up the great playing and fantastic videos!
Thanks for the demo. I have a D-35 that I’m really happy with, but just found. D-3R, a rare model, that rivals it tonally. It was an inexpensive, lucky find
Both are beautiful guitars.. I wonder if the 20year age difference has anything to do with it... But the D28 was cleaner, warmer and more balanced on the low end. D35 had power and amplification advantages, maybe due to a tighter/higher action. I also wonder what age the strings have on each guitar, the D35 sounded like newer strings to me.. but I could be wrong there. My general opinion is that the older guitars, cared for properly of course, have a much more balanced and rich tone to them. I also really like Martin D18's probably the best. I have a 2019 D28, and am so grateful to finally have the ability to afford a Martin. It's been a blessing to own these past few years. Thanks for the video!
Great playing and comparison! Happy to be your 900th subscriber! Your playing is very clean and impressive it showed the differences in the two guitars nicely. I recently tried out some 28s and 35s and went with an HD-28 as it suits my needs in performing right now but I will own both one day.
I have an HD28 Adirondack custom and it’s truly the most amazing guitar I’ve ever played and heard. But I have to say this D35 wow. It sounds great. Martin is by far the best guitar out there across the board.
I bet that hd28 sounds great! I just got a d35. They are sweet but different. It's almost hard to control the sound. It can be almost too complex when singing and I have to go easy with the pick to not compete with the guitar. The HD has a bit of a more fundamental sound to me. d18 and hd28 are probably the best for most people but the d35 is a nice also and something a little different.
Some mighty fine playing on both guitars. I had a hard time deciding which I like best. I have a less expensive Martin MMV I purchased about ten years ago and thought about upgrading to a D-35. As you said if you sit down in a room and played both, you may find a totally different sound that you like. Thank you for a wonderful video.
Thanks Delvin for this outstanding comparison of these two beauties. Both are excellent for their own..but on the second tune that HD28 kicked it. Pure musical pleasure. Your skills are awesome. May I ask you what are you considering as high or low action on these guitars (12th fret E-strings)? I'm looking for a HD28 like yours..but I'm not sure about the neck and 1 11/16 nutwidth.🤔 Which neck and nutwidth do you prefer from these two regarding playability? Would appreciate some feedback from you.. Thanks again and best regards from Germany.
Thanks I appreciate you commenting, in terms of action height I wouldn’t know about measurements I just go by feel. To me a low action is the point before they buzz as low as possible before creating problems. Some people can play at a high action with speed and agility I can’t. But then again I can’t play very good at any action. When it comes to nut with I generally like 1 3/4 better but I don’t mind 1 11/16 as long as the string height at the net is low. I know I gave very vague answers to your questions but I appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
@@lucascruzguitar Thanks for your reply Delvin🙏 Your description regarding string height makes sense. For me it's cool to know the measures for what feels good..then I can eventually transfer it to another guitar..or for orders without the possibility to test before..Regarding nutwidth I have to test a standard Martin neck pre low oval with the 1 11/16" nut like your HD-28 anywhere..because 1 11/16" on the mod. low oval neck doesn't feel that good for me... Don't underestimate your playing skills 😉 Keep up the great playing and work 👊
I agree I think he was the best bluegrass rhythm player ever, and I appreciate your confidence in me to make such a video but I’m not good enough to do that, I appreciate you for watching👍
Stellar playing on both guitars and I'm pretty sure you could make a gas- can with strings sing. I just bought an older model HD28, but I've had D35's in the past that I really liked. Both have a place and I really could't choose one over the other.
Lovely playing. Really showcases both guitars very well. For me the HD-28 is a little more articulate with somewhat better note separation but the D-35 is boomier and more mellow, perhaps a better strummer? I'd take the HD-28 first but my preference is marginal. Both sound great and either of them would delight me to own. Great video by the way. I've just subscribed.
I appreciate that compliment, I’m not a very good player or speaker but I try to give a transparent non bias view to guitar comparisons and let the listener decide for themselves. Thanks for watching 👍
@Delvin Lucas. I searched for HD-28 vs D-35 and here I am. Thank you! PS: When I want to hear the difference between two guitars ...I don't want to hear Yngwie Malmsteen playing 32nd Notes and the speed of light. I want to hear what you just played. Thank you bro!
I like "hearing" the chords go by ...they tell the story ...you can "digest" their story. To each their own ...but I think you and I have the same "internal regulator".@@lucascruzguitar
I'm Hoping and praying for the 35,,, I just bought a brand new D-35,, I've got a 28, and 150 yr. Anniversary HD-28, I saw this guitar on Reverb ! It's a Tobbacco sunburst D-35, which is sorta out the ordinary , But the Back two outter sides are almost burly ! The grain is straight as a arrow , until it get to the upper bout and it actually turns almost 90 degrees into the middle piece of the back which is a slight redish tone that the grain leans out to both sides ! it's absolutely gorgeous ! I searched the web and couldn't find one anywhere close to the finish or the character or the price ! I made sure I got the pictures and serial numbers before I ordered it ,,,, Fingers crossed ! Do a Compasrion between a Blueridge BR-160 & a D-28 ! see what ya think !
Great playing man! Stop selling yourself short, I get it, but you’ve got TOO MUCH humility! I’d really like to know the name of that second song, beautiful tune!
Great video and excellent playing as always! I think I preferred the HD28 on this particular comparison. Could I ask which picks and string gauges you normally use? Thanks!!
Nice!! I suspect that you subtly and intuitively adapt your attack to the particular guitar you are playing, so your playing is what really shines through to me.
I had a D45 reimagined and a 1937 authentic D28. Traded them both for a high end gibson electric. I picked up a D35 later and like it better than both the D45 and D28 Authentic 1937.
I just got a d35. I think the sound of the hd28 is more classic and "fundamental" for lack of a better word. The d35 borders on too much going on in the tone. They sound nice flatpicked or fingerpicked. I think technique is especially important with a pick on the 35.
I play a J45 Gibson Custom. I love de midranges from the rosewood, so as on the D35. I think they more responsiv than the J45. So I played a Martin up the 3000€ and yes, the Martin have more „the“ spirit from a very based sound than the Gibsons. I want to sell my J45 to get a D35. Delvin, many thanks for the short Video about the comparing and greez from me in Germany.
So my ears hear a little more of an open quality on the HD-28…which makes sense if it’s an ‘01 model. The D-35 sounds louder and sharper, which I’m confident has more to do with it being brand new as you said and less with its construction (because, aging and whatnot being equal, the D-35 should sound less sharp than the HD in most comparisons). I would suggest revisiting this comparison in a year or two after the D-35 has opened up a bit (if you still own both).
The top board of the D-35 is supported by thin and short bracing bars. Therefore, the top board reflects the pitch of the mid-high range more delicately. The D-28 is supported by thicker and taller bracing, and produces a powerful sound that can handle powerful inputs. Martin is skilled at controlling the sound of acoustic guitars.
What strings and gauge were on each? Were they the same age? Flat pick used? That HD28 sounds more resonant with more bottom end and more open sounding as it should being 20 years older. I believe the HD28 sounds superior here and more suited to bluegrass type music.
Could really hear the contrast between them ... the 28 was bright and punchy ... the 35 sounded like the whole band, lead, rhythm, and bass. Really illustrates why the 28 is the quintessential bluegrass axe while the 35 is the quintessential singer-songwriter axe.
Great playing! You bring out all the many qualities of these two great guitars.
I have an HD-28 and it’s amazing how the tone has mellowed and improved even more in just seven years.
Love your version of ‘I am a pilgrim’
Delvin, if I close my eyes I can see and hear Tony in your playing. It sounds wonderful. I would choose either guitar but prefer the mellowness of
the D28.
What can I say ... Your playing is flawless and You really do these fine guitars justice.
Thank You from another acoustic Geek in Stockholm, Sweden.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate the kind words but I’m not much of a good player at all I just like guitars 👍
I have an HD28 and a D35, both from the late 90s. The contrast in tones I hear in this vid, are exactly what I hear with mine!
Excellent playing on this vid!
Subscribed my friend! Thank you for your excellent playing and clear, clean comparison.
Thank you for the demonstration, Delvin. I’m doing a D28 vs. D35 comparison. Right now, I’m leaning toward a D35, but it’s early in the process.
I’m a D-28 owner/player for over 5 decades. I’ve owned more than a few of them over the years as I’m a professional singer songwriter as well. Spotlight, yes! ...but, the 35 provides a smoother, blending sound. Not criticizing -- I want one (or two) of everything! LOL
I really enjoy listening to you play.
Beautiful pickin!!! Blessings to you and your family!! Bob
@@robertmorales1781 Thanks buddy I truly appreciate that, thanks for watching 👍
35 jumped right out at me, that would be my pick! Both are nice Martins, big boomy guitars! Thank you for sharing your guitars & picking with us!

I agree, they need some time to decide they are guitars and not trees. I also think it takes some years for the finish to cure properly.
Jesus wipes off that dust of everyday life too! Thanks again!
If it wasn’t for Jesus I’d have no will to live, he’s my savior and best friend. Thanks for watching 👍
@@lucascruzguitar praise the Lord Jesus!
@@lucascruzguitarNo will at all? Bro don't say that.
Both sound amazing!
Too much people with an imaginary friend. 🤣
Great playing and comparison! Happy to be your 900th subscriber! Your playing is very clean and impressive it showed the differences in the two guitars nicely. I recently tried out some 28s and 35s and went with an HD-28 as it suits my needs in performing right now but I will own both one day.
Hey I appreciate you and thanks for subscribing 👍
Thanks from Michigan
Thank you! I appreciate you watching 👍
Thank you for watching
I love the sound of both guitars but I like the sound of the D-35 better in my opinion
Don't underestimate your playing skills 😉 Keep up the great playing and work 👊
Man I’d love it if you’d do a video tutorial of Tony’s rhythm style. Everyone knows he can pick but I think his rhythm is often overlooked.
I agree I think he was the best bluegrass rhythm player ever, and I appreciate your confidence in me to make such a video but I’m not good enough to do that, I appreciate you for watching👍
@@lucascruzguitar I get you are humble but man you can play. Not sure who ever told you otherwise. Not get on to that video son!
Terridic video. You let the guitars do the talkin'. Thanks. And BTW, I'm saving thi video to learn some of the licks you played. :)
Stellar playing on both guitars and I'm pretty sure you could make a gas- can with strings sing. I just bought an older model HD28, but I've had D35's in the past that I really liked. Both have a place and I really could't choose one over the other.
I appreciate the compliment but like I’ve said before I’m really not much of a guitar player, I just fake it pretty good. Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it very much 👍
I vote that you do all guitar comparisons.
I appreciate you watching and commenting, it’s a good thing you don’t like lightning fast playing because I can barely play normal 👍
I like "hearing" the chords go by ...they tell the story ...you can "digest" their story. To each their own ...but I think you and I have the same "internal regulator".@@lucascruzguitar
Nice video! Both guitars are the opposite of their tops :). The D-35 is darker, the 28 is brighter.
I think the d35 sounds like so much more than one guitar-beautiful
Wow Delvin! Really enjoyed your picking. It did wipe off some of the dust of everyday life! Thanks!
Cool..from North Alabama...have had each..
Great video and excellent playing as always! I think I preferred the HD28 on this particular comparison. Could I ask which picks and string gauges you normally use? Thanks!!
I use Elixir 12-53 phosphore bronze and a variety of picks usually 1mm
@@lucascruzguitar Thanks for the info. Looking forward to future videos!
Nice!! I suspect that you subtly and intuitively adapt your attack to the particular guitar you are playing, so your playing is what really shines through to me.
I appreciate the kind words Sir, although I’m not a good guitarist just someone who enjoys playing them 👍
@@lucascruzguitar Who says you aren't good?
That’s a hd-35 isn’t it . The title hd-28 Vs d-35 . Great review and super playing. Thanks a lot .
No it’s a regular d35, thanks for watching 👍
Which do you prefer? You obviously can tear both up! The hd28 seems to be bass heavy and the d35 seems more rounded at least to my ears
I had a D45 reimagined and a 1937 authentic D28. Traded them both for a high end gibson electric. I picked up a D35 later and like it better than both the D45 and D28 Authentic 1937.
wow tough call man, if I had to narrow it down to one I think the 35 sounds best, tho that 28 is hard to beat too. great playing man! cheers!
You are a superb guitar player.
Thanks I appreciate the compliment, but I really don’t consider myself a very good player I just like guitars 👍
I traded my D35 for a HD28 1935 Sunburst, and I love the HD28 1935.
The 35 sounds more full and robust. Great playing.
What song are you playing, starting around 3:23?
Amazing playing!
Your fingers liked the setup on the D35 better, easy to see that.
The 28 booms better but the 35 articulates better.
👍
Thanks for watching 👍
Love both but I stay with my d-35 😉. Love Martin guitars ❤️
Both sounded great and one not better than the other, but I'd say the D-35 sounded tighter (newer) with a bit more bass.
Hi I was wondering what best strings for HD 28 and enjoyed ur playing! John
I use elixir phosphor bronze, thanks for watching I appreciate the compliment 👍
D28 is crisp and articulate…but the D35 was just rich in bass and a fuller sound
D-28? It's an HD28, right?
@@peterpulpitpounder Thank you for correcting my mistake.
I was just wondering if I read the description correctly. :) God bless! @@rokumatsu
Wow great pickin...both guitars sound great, slightly different, can't really pick a favorite.
Both Martins. Can’t lose with either one.
Which is darker guitar 28 or 35?
What strings and gauge were on each? Were they the same age? Flat pick used? That HD28 sounds more resonant with more bottom end and more open sounding as it should being 20 years older. I believe the HD28 sounds superior here and more suited to bluegrass type music.
Man I’d love to have the tabs for “I am a Pilgrim”… guess I’ll be using the UA-cam playback speed option and get to work!
Great play! I liked D35 more : )
