The whips are fun to use and helped me out in defeating Malenia. I dual wielded Hoslows petal whips and applied a cold affinity to apply bleed and frost, with bloodhounds step to avoid Malenia’s waterfowl dance. My only issue with the whips is that there is a long open window after attacking with the whip where you are open to getting hit, and if the ground is at an incline/decline against an enemy, your attacks may not hit. Overall though, they are fun to use if you are looking to dual wield 👍🏽
Tbh the incline issue really makes me mis ds3 whips. By two handing whips you'd get much wider lights and your first heavy would become a vertical downward slash that started high and used the full reach of the whip for spacing out bosses which helped negate the long attack recovery. The option to dual wield them is nice and the reach on the guard counter has some potential for more dynamic play but the loss of basically any reason to two hand whips wasn't really worth it. They just feel more one dimensional. They can still be fun and maybe a run with a hammer and off hand whip will win me over like it did in ds3, but as of now something just feels.... Missing.....

My boyfriend started using a whip for his Trevor Belmont build, and that thing is a game changer for crowds and for enemies vulnerable to strike damage! A whip is an amazing supplement if you’re relying on slash or pierce damage otherwise.
A Trevor Belmont build was some of the most fun I've had playing a videogame. Although it made me want a 3D open world style Castlevania game so badly!
0:00 Intro 0:24 Styles of play 2:01 General pros and cons 2:41 Ashes of War to use with whips 3:35 Magma Whip Candlestick 5:58 Giant's Red Braid 8:35 Whip 10:47 Thorned Whip 12:48 Urumi 15:18 Hoslow's Petal Whip
For my own reference: Looks like the options are Candlestick + Fire Urumi, Hoslow's x2 on a future playthrough, or Giant's Red Braid with shield. The fire-based whips would utilize faith, as opposed to Hoslow's which may use Arcane.
I found a really helpful tip regarding flasks! I don't recall who said it so I can't give credit but it's not my idea and it's been super awesome for me. Set the flasks to your left and right buttons on the D pad in your SECOND menu, the one you have to hold Y for (triangle on PS5). It's a lot easier to press Y and hit left for HP or right for mind rather than cycling through the down arrow in menu one. Plus that made me feel more comfortable filling up my down arrow item slots since I don't have to worry about cycling or holding the button down to get back to the first slot and heal.
Its worth it to point out that split damage DOES NOT make the damage worse in every case. It entirely depends on the resistances of the enemy youre fighting. If they have 40% physical resist and 35% elemental resist, you actually deal MORE damage by splitting your damage elements. Instead of your whole damage being negated 40%, half of it is only negated 35% instead, thus increasing damage The part to look out for is you should only split into an element that the enemy resists less, not more, because then half your damage is resisted more
I was not expecting whips to be next in the series lol! I’ve not thought about trying a spell whip before, but I have been intrigued by whips for a long time so it might be time to try it. Thanks as always!
Dual petal whips build with occult affinity and raptor of the mists is so cool. High damage with good blood set up and very good jump attack because of the equipment and talisman. I use Determination on the second hand it's very good with jump attack. And I have a Thorned whip with bloodhound's step to switch the seconde hand if needed.
i feel like using two giants red braid is the best combo for making a kratos build with the blade of chaos it deals fire damage and in GOW it seems to be more on fire the more is upgraded and using fire like moves flame dance is basecly a combo move from GOW and being red you could imagen that it has that red trail that it leaves behind in the GOW games
I hope this series will also cover talismans and staffs. Some kind of overview, with talisman/staff is good/best for a specific group of incantations/speels would be awesome. Next I would love to see some (great)axes, because you always just see some kind of swords.
In pvp it can be good to put urumi in your main hand and use its special charged heavy to poke anyone who charges you. It's range is great and if you time it right it's 2 hits. The talisman that increases damage with successive hits is great for dual whips. I like bleed whips and can actually do well in duels with them which isn't true of all weapons for me. People aren't familiar with the moveset, its easy to proc bleed, and easy to roll catch.
: DDDDD YOU MENTIONED MY SPELL WHIP BUILD! I beat the entire game offline, levelling only strength, with a Heavy Urumi (quickstep), electrify weapon and sacred vow!!!! (also power attack talisman and power attack physick potion) I played virtually the absolute hardest and stupidest build in the game in a vaccuum with no influences or research. I was also a heavy armor med-load user. Faith-Whip-Tank Build! I was utterly passionate about it and in love with it. I actually hated Elden Ring trudging along until I found the Urumi. Im so glad my build existed to someone else! ALTHOUGH, to beat Mohg, at Miquella, I DID RESPEC my 99 STR to 99 DEX and then it was soooooooooo much easier. 808 attack rating at 99 STR _Heavy_ after buffs vs 879 attack rating at 99 DEX _Keen_ after buffs (dont forget to use gravel stone seal for electrify weapon, and the canvas incantation talisman) MY SINGLE COMPLAINT!... The Urumi has no riposte. Im sorry I had to say that, my perfect Urumi, please forgive me... Staggered enemies are meaningless to the Urumi. I found it to be just another pious discipline inflicted upon those who walk the lands between, craven by the Urumi. Instead, staggers are a time to refill stamina and release full bars of power attacks, and that second power attack, is absolute *chefs kiss* when mastered. I think I have loved the Urumi like no other weapon in any game before. I love it even more than power-stanced Pursuer's Ultra's. Adventure Time's Jake: "One Urumi is all that is needed." It... Lives rent-free in my soul for eternity. The Urumi demands perfection and patches-like cunning. The tracking on it can be turned 180 behind you, and back again, every single strike, so multi-directional mobs are a joyous whack-a-mole where even katanas wouldnt keep up. I could go on and on about this absolute vision of perfection, please, someone stop me. The omni-directional flaming whip in the video is for babies. You must feel the death of every enemy individually to have truly tasted their pain. edit: The amount of times I referenced Frank Reynolds: "I'm gonna whip that bitch if she makes a peep!" cannot be counted by mortal means. Forget all other existing weapons. And by the way, an Urumi is what was used to kill Rorouni Kenshin, so. Think about that before you churlishly equip a katana. In closing: It is my badge of honor to have beaten Elden Ring with an Urumi-Faith-Tank build (and all side-quests and optional bosses possible in one playthrough)..... This was my personal culmination of the effort to 100% Demons Souls, DS1, DS2, DS3 and then Elden Ring. The crowning achievment of them all that no other weapon-user will ever know..... And I wont _ever_ do it again. Literally. Im finally satisfied. Im selling my 3070 now that this is finished and quitting gaming. Urumi is life. _and Urumi is death_
I kinda hate the whips in ER cuz the after-swing retraction is way too slow. Like, it retracts to all the way down, every swing, and it feels heavy. I wish you could really whip them around multiple times rather than whip-retract-whip-retract
I think it would be useful if you broke down the standard moveset vs power stance moveset vs two-hand moveset on these weapons in just a *but* more detail. One thing I found with whips is that the dual-wield power stance moveset has a frustrating delay between hit 2 and hit 3 in the combo, which often leaves an opening for enemies to attack you and even stagger you out of your combo. Some insights on effective movesets and combos could definitely help in these videos.
A running R1 is extremely effective to start a multihit R1 combo. Also, increase your poise to 60+ and you will be able to continue hitting. I recommend using occult petals because they frequently bleed and cause a stagger.
Sounds like a good ash for a whip. Blood flame blade can also mess up your crit opportunities because of the continuous bleed buildup and whips aren't so hurt by that.
Fextra you just told me the best information I needed to know because I wanted to see if I could make Giant's whip and Hoslow's Whip work together and I just found out yesterday that diallos appears in liurnia and wondered about if he dropped it and you told me at 17 mins in the video while I was watching this, THANK YOU
I run the thorned whip and the regular whip on my off hand, with regular whip equiped with quick step ash of war with bleed affinity of 104 and thorned whip with bloodhound step with poison to have double bleed and poison, it's strong af
I like the idea of a Castlevania challenge with a whip as a main weapon combined with incantations and throwables to simulate the side weapons like throwing knives and holy pots.
It's a clickbait tactic, does nothing for avoiding arguments. Great in-depth video, but including in the title that each weapon type is OP and best in the game is kind of lame.
Dual thorned whips with raptor of the mists carried me very hard in the end areas of the game when the game came out, it was a really fun way to play to ignore every attack bosses put out, proc bleed super fast and break poise as fast as great sword builds from constantly dual air whipping with the teleport. They did a great job on whips in this game.
I love the whips! One thing to mention, I found that in early game, utilising the 'Strike' damage on the whip and the 'Slash' Damage on the Urumi can really make a difference, also makes the Urumi even more unique as it's the only one with Slashing damage :D
Let me help you out "Whip it Good! : Elden Ring Whip Guide" thought we were going to see more comparisons with other weapons making a case for why they are the best lol. Still a very good guide video on whips. Thanks!
I love these I'm always trying to figure out the best scaling with the none unique weapons. More please. I'll watch one for every weapon type. I want colossal swords and straight swords.
The Magma Whip Candlestick scales more with Faith than the Giant's Red Braid, which leans more towards Strength. Both work pretty well on Incantation builds, but unless you're at like 75-80 Faith I'd stick with the Giant's Seal or Beast Seal instead of the Erdtree Seal.
I had no idea these weapons were even in the game during my first playthrough. They're so unique on there own and I'll have to try Red Braid/Dragon Incantation Build.
I love Dual Wield/Exultation build with Poison infusion on Thorned or Hoslow's. They keep bleed and do absurd poison build up too, so with both Exultation talismans and either white mask or mushroom crown, damage can get nutty with them alone. Claw + Raptor stacks nicely, and so do successive hit buff. I didn't decide to try them until a few NG's in, and was running mostly Dex and Arc, now im finishing +8 with 70 in both as well as Str and they are still carrying when i need to call on them lol BHS definitely recommended, i know the AoW is good on any light builds, but when you mix the ability to get away quickly and safely with the oppressing range of the whip, you've got yourself an oversight lmao Also i've been messing around with Bleeding Shield Crash on Fingerprint Stone Shield, and whip works as a surprising good main hand for that as well. Makes a terrifying close-range build for any humanoid enemy into a pestering long-range build too, plus there aren't that many AoW's you'll be interested in using when it comes to bleed whips outside of BHS.
I’ve been powerstancing occult petals with high arcane and bloodhound step on NG++. I am easily cruising through the game. Enemies are hit and bled before I am in range of their weapons. And the AoE is fantastic. Enemy shields are stripped quickly. Plus, no more boring double seppaku. I do use golden vow and sometimes flame grants me strength. I also use talismans and physics that reward multiple hits. I rarely jump, because I like high poise (60+) which raptor’s feathers does not provide. Consider focussing on lots of stamina and stamina recovery.
Everyone knows that holy damage sucks because of the negations, but fails to recognize that different physical damage type has different negation as well. The whip dealt the highest physical damage may deal less damage in combat because of its damage type-most enemy’s slash damage negation is higher than strike negation.
I used the normal Whip mainly for its damage type in a Dex playthrough… And there’s nothing more satisfying than getting the last hit on a boss with an offhand whip.
If anyone's wondering you don't actually have to kill Diallos to get the Petal Whip, you can follow his quest and he'll drop it at the end, you'll have to get to Volcano Manor but you don't have to fight anything to get there or to get the whip
dex faith whip build is fun, black flame blade on an urumi is op, cast n swap seal to dual whip and goto town, clocked 11k in 1 dual weild sequence chain on the dragon with the weird name in farum. is nice
I fell in love with Hoslows Petal Whips, their pretty much all I have been using since I got the 2nd from Juno, if I need something more powerful I switch to my Rotten Battle Hammer with the Lions Claw ash of war which is very very fun to use, but on my whips I just run bloodhound step with the cold affinity on my main then royal knights resolve as it scales decently with str and dex and with the lightning affinity on it. Let me say idk if it's the affinitys or what but they are stun locking machines, I had a pair as well as my mimic against Malenia and we demolished her, she might have gotten 1 or 2 attacks off the 1st phase and maybe 3 or 4 the 2nd. Overall their just fun and different to use, considering my first playthrough consisted of uchigatana, then moonveil then rivers of blood I try to stay away from those these days and have fun experimenting with the other 100 weapons in the game lol. IMO fromsoft did their best job to date as far as weapon variety, builds and usefulness/impact of each weapon. I mean honestly there's enough ashes/talismans/buffs & spells plus the ability to apply different affinitys to most weapons that you can make almost any weapon "OP" Great job with the series btw, loving it.
Are any of these viable for a int/dex spellblade-type build? Currently using an Estoc/Rapier, but I love whips and would be awesome to use one! Didn't even know they existed in the game, lol.
Out of all of the Weapon types ( across the souls games) - I would say I used Whips the lest until Elden Ring. FormSoft finally made them very appealing.
Thorned whip is not late game. It's been a while, but pretty sure near the Revengers shack site of grace there's a group of fire monks and prelates you can get it from. It's somewhere west of Raya Lucaria along that ridge line

But there isn't vampires in epdem ring is there
Also, they do strike damage. Which is extremely useful against armored enemies. So, it offsets the low damage.
0:00 Intro
0:24 Styles of play
2:01 General pros and cons
2:41 Ashes of War to use with whips
3:35 Magma Whip Candlestick
5:58 Giant's Red Braid
8:35 Whip
10:47 Thorned Whip
12:48 Urumi
15:18 Hoslow's Petal Whip
For my own reference:
Looks like the options are Candlestick + Fire Urumi, Hoslow's x2 on a future playthrough, or Giant's Red Braid with shield.
Instead of your whole damage being negated 40%, half of it is only negated 35% instead, thus increasing damage
The part to look out for is you should only split into an element that the enemy resists less, not more, because then half your damage is resisted more
these game should have a discoverable bestiary in game
I was not expecting whips to be next in the series lol! I’ve not thought about trying a spell whip before, but I have been intrigued by whips for a long time so it might be time to try it. Thanks as always!
Here they are! Best weapons.
Thanks for doing these. Really enjoying these videos.
Love this series, thanks!
Wow you have the most detailed guide i've seen ever. Love it.
Thank you for highlighting them!
Coincidental upload since I've been trying out a Ghost Rider build. Appreciate it.
i feel like using two giants red braid is the best combo for making a kratos build with the blade of chaos
it deals fire damage and in GOW it seems to be more on fire the more is upgraded and using fire like moves
flame dance is basecly a combo move from GOW
and being red you could imagen that it has that red trail that it leaves behind in the GOW games
Looking forward to trying this out for a build! Ty for the guide
I hope this series will also cover talismans and staffs. Some kind of overview, with talisman/staff is good/best for a specific group of incantations/speels would be awesome.
Next I would love to see some (great)axes, because you always just see some kind of swords.
We'll definitely do Staffs and Seals.
@@Fextralife would also be cool to see something around axes, they get such little love in this game but look so cool
Never thought it could happen, but now I'm excited about whips
In pvp it can be good to put urumi in your main hand and use its special charged heavy to poke anyone who charges you. It's range is great and if you time it right it's 2 hits.
The talisman that increases damage with successive hits is great for dual whips.
I like bleed whips and can actually do well in duels with them which isn't true of all weapons for me. People aren't familiar with the moveset, its easy to proc bleed, and easy to roll catch.
I understand that these titles are part of a series, but..... DON'T LIE TO ME FEXTRALIFE!
808 attack rating at 99 STR _Heavy_ after buffs vs 879 attack rating at 99 DEX _Keen_ after buffs (dont forget to use gravel stone seal for electrify weapon, and the canvas incantation talisman)
MY SINGLE COMPLAINT!...
Adventure Time's Jake: "One Urumi is all that is needed."
It...
And I wont
_ever_
do it again.
Literally. Im finally satisfied. Im selling my 3070 now that this is finished and quitting gaming. Urumi is life.
_and Urumi is death_
dual hoslow whips and dragon seal is a fun build to play. used it for the end of my playthough
I’m using it on NG++. Super strong bleed build.
I love watching elden ring content in your channel
Sick move set
Can’t wait too see a video like this with bows and greatbows
I kinda hate the whips in ER cuz the after-swing retraction is way too slow. Like, it retracts to all the way down, every swing, and it feels heavy. I wish you could really whip them around multiple times rather than whip-retract-whip-retract
I like urumi in my off hand. It looks cool and is just fun to pair with my other weapons. I plan to do a dual whip setup eventually.
Every weapon type is the best 😂
Don’t care, these are the best type breakdowns on YT hands down
Going by youtube videos, EVERYTHING in Elden Ring is over-powered.
Exactly haha
Good to see whips get the love they deserve. Even just the plain ol’ whip is good. My gravity/lava mage uses whips and breezes through the game.
You can also apply status effect, like frost or blood flame, with flame of redmane
Sounds like a good ash for a whip. Blood flame blade can also mess up your crit opportunities because of the continuous bleed buildup and whips aren't so hurt by that.
I love these videos! I hope the next one goes over heavy thrusting swords! quite an underrated weapon type in my opinion.
3:20 what I do on my whip build is I keep the misericorde in my second slot so if I DO get to do a crit I can just switch to it real quick
I like how all weapon types can be the Best Weapon in Elden Ring. A smart way to avoid arguments on the comment section.
So true...
Can someone please make a build that uses one of every weapon type, or just as many as you can have in all weapon slots
@@Sletchman fair
It's a clickbait tactic, does nothing for avoiding arguments. Great in-depth video, but including in the title that each weapon type is OP and best in the game is kind of lame.
Been interested in whips.
Cool hwip
Thanks!
definitely gonna try out the candlestick, it looks really good
that's what she said
Cool video nice work , amazing.
I love these I'm always trying to figure out the best scaling with the none unique weapons. More please. I'll watch one for every weapon type. I want colossal swords and straight swords.
One additional point that I think needs mentioning. The urumi deals slash damage while the rest of the whips deal strike damage
Curved swords next PLEASE !!
I hope so. I’m running 2 cold bandits curved swords so I need some knowledge
Please do one for shields and armor sets as well
Im loving dual whips!
Did a whip playthrough with two petal whips and the Hoslow armor named Hoslowlife. Great fun
I had no idea these weapons were even in the game during my first playthrough. They're so unique on there own and I'll have to try Red Braid/Dragon Incantation Build.
I love the Urumi. I've been running it with vyke's dragonbolt just because of how cool it looks
I didn't decide to try them until a few NG's in, and was running mostly Dex and Arc, now im finishing +8 with 70 in both as well as Str and they are still carrying when i need to call on them lol
BHS definitely recommended, i know the AoW is good on any light builds, but when you mix the ability to get away quickly and safely with the oppressing range of the whip, you've got yourself an oversight lmao
Also i've been messing around with Bleeding Shield Crash on Fingerprint Stone Shield, and whip works as a surprising good main hand for that as well.
I'm doing a taunter's tongue playthrough with two whips and a naked dancer charm build. It's fun
I used the normal Whip mainly for its damage type in a Dex playthrough… And there’s nothing more satisfying than getting the last hit on a boss with an offhand whip.
extra pro about giant's red braid: the skill looks cool
Hi. Great review. Any whip build that you suggest? For end game.
If anyone's wondering you don't actually have to kill Diallos to get the Petal Whip, you can follow his quest and he'll drop it at the end, you'll have to get to Volcano Manor but you don't have to fight anything to get there or to get the whip
I'm pleased by how whips got a much needed rework
The braid is great is for fire builds. I run it with my Blasphemous blade fire build as a secondary weapon and switch to it for niche situations.
dex faith whip build is fun, black flame blade on an urumi is op, cast n swap seal to dual whip and goto town, clocked 11k in 1 dual weild sequence chain on the dragon with the weird name in farum. is nice
Are you guys gonna do one on great hammers and stars and maces and or clubs?
They are the most underrated. I got a leather whip early, use it more than any other weapon. Especially good against flying enemies.
"Duel Whipping" seems like a euphemism.
Are any of these viable for a int/dex spellblade-type build? Currently using an Estoc/Rapier, but I love whips and would be awesome to use one! Didn't even know they existed in the game, lol.
i use a hoslow offhand and the urumi main hand ,both with cold infusions
OK FINE ILL TRY A WHIP, DAMN! Think I'll go with the Urumi
The petal whip is so cool
Unpopular opinion, but Bows would be awesome to cover next.
Can you make a video on Curved Greatswords next???
I’m finishing up colossal weapons right now so that’s next
Now watch me whip...
This is why I am maidenless.
I'm definitely going to do a Simon Belmont build if whips are really good in Elder ring
Out of all of the Weapon types ( across the souls games) - I would say I used Whips the lest until Elden Ring.
FormSoft finally made them very appealing.
I discovered the power on my second game. It is great for dogs and low flying enemies that tend to hang out of sword reach
Thorned whip is not late game. It's been a while, but pretty sure near the Revengers shack site of grace there's a group of fire monks and prelates you can get it from. It's somewhere west of Raya Lucaria along that ridge line
Imagine one day this man says this weapon type is garbage, I think the stars would align and world peace would be achieved
Honestly a whip plus longsword off hand build got me through alot of my second playthrough
