In regards to The Owl House, I firmly believe that its first episode and second episode are a stealth two-parter, the first part acting as an introduction for the characters and some essential setup, and the second episode establishing the themes of the show and presenting us with a microcosm of the show's overarching storyline, and Luz's character arc.

    • @jocosejester
      @jocosejester Рік тому +35

Either way, the fact that ideology of Luz breaks so fast or just testified false onto the later seasons makes it look like that Dana had freaking no idea what was the first episode was going to be rather she was just excited to introduce her next characters, *ahem* Amenity and Hunter. Although the Hunter comes to the next season, it is found out from interviews and research work that Dana forcefully added Hunter into the scene which was fine and the Crew liked the idea but she wanted to make him angsty teen-ager of some sort that goes through trauma, the inspiration is probably from the fandom or maybe she thought that up, but other writers wanted to make him an annoying prodigy; you can clearly see this conflict by watching the first episode of the The Owl House season 2 and then watching the 6th episode, The Hunting Pailsman. And also pay attention in this episode as Luz also forgets the lesson she learned at season 1 of episode 2.

@@variedadesonline3926 Season 1 episode 2, in which Luz learns that everything is not as her book told her but rather it is different; instead of just waiting around for a "prophecy" or to be just hoping that you are the chosen one and do nothing, she instead learns to cooperate with the real world in her nerdy style and abandons the book's idealogy; she is still Luz and contains the spirit of her books but she learned not to let the idealogy of books' dictate her lifestyle. However, we see her keep self-sacrificing herself over everything in Season 2B instead of asking for help, and yes I know the Reaching Out episode was Luz suffering from missing her dad, but seriously in that episode she lied and messed up hard so after that I really wanted her to be better but no in episodes 17, 18, 19 and 21 of season 2 you can see her keep self-sacrificing herself which would be fine if the season 1 episode 2 did not existed. This you might consider as a one thing and only one little mistake which would be fine but this constantly happens throughout the series where they establishes such cool ideas and never go along with it. I also really hated when Gus got sidelined, especially in the "through the looking glass ruins", his plot clashes against an almost point Luz and Amenity plot which had just one payoff in the end, yikes.

You put into words a lot of thoughts I just intrinsically knew about these shows. The Owl House is my favorite show, but Amphibia hooked me in a way I don’t think any show has before.
What I would’ve loved from Owl House’s first episode is a hint at Belos. Maybe Wrath walking towards the throne room and cutting to look at him as the door opens. He walks towards the screen and Belos so that we never get a look at Emperor Belos. We only see Wrath try to explain the escaped prisoners when Belos cuts him off to ask about the human.
This would add so much mystery, make the convenience of a human breaking the barrier feel intentional and significant. Most of all, Belos’s disinterest in the conformitorium escapees promises that there are much more ominous plans in motion.

Another thing about The Owl House pilot that was missing was a sense of purpose. Why does Luz want to become a witch so badly? She spent 4 episodes in the Demon Realm not knowing if she can even do magic. Season 3's episode Thanks to Them really helped out showing Luz's Video Diary: The grief she felt from losing her Dad, how she got into her love of The Good Witch Azura and the breaking point with the Book Report Incident.

Luz's actions felt very purposeful to me - her desire to be a witch was kind of fantasy chasing but her primary motivation for staying in the demon realm was clearly because she was feeling beaten down by the human realm - alienation, an at the time apparently unsupportive parent, being sent off to a punitive camp intended to force her to be "normal" (she explicitly called this one out). Early Owl House sits really weird with it's later lore.
The conformatorium imprisoning people for just being "weird", instead of, say, wild witches and dissidents of the empire like later revelations would show.
Eda's limb removal seeming at first to be something that witches in general can do, instead of being exclusive to her curse (granted, we see no other witches doing that)
Absolutely zero apperences from the Golden Guard, despite ample reason to be there (he's not like Phillip, a random human who showed up 300 years ago and no one cares to remember, he's the freakin emperor's right hand)
The light gliph being shown in Eda's light spell, despite gliph magic/titan magic later being shown to be substantially different to witch and demon magic...
Many small inconsistencies which makes me think not that many more specific lore details were planned at the start.

I actually found TOH to be immediately intriguing while it took me time to care about Amphibia.
All of the characters in the Conformitorium make additional appearances - plural - and Tiny Nose's weird conspiracy theory about being the plaything of higher beings turns out to be true.
TOH had constraints put on it that affected the story so I'm sure that's probably part of why the 1st episode is so random and also explains Once Upon a Swap. There were concepts introduced in that first episode that never appeared again, concepts that may not have had the opportunity to be explored with the dramatic shortening of the third season. They not only had to put the third season into three 45 minutes specials, but they also had to change the second half of season 2 to try and get some questions answered and ideas set up that, had they had a full season 3, they would have been able to do then.
As for the barrier, considering Emperor Belos is human, The barrier does make sense. The way they're using it may not, but it's quite possible that he gave a general command and they followed it to the best of their abilities, maybe not completely understanding what he was after. Warden Wrath was also shown to have some of his own issues
Is the first episode of TOH a strong episode? No, I agree with you there. But it was interesting enough to me to grab my attention. So as far as that goes, it may well just be a matter of taste.

I think a big part of this is personal taste - the first episode of The Owl House hooked me within a few minutes, but I could not get into Amphibia despite pushing through what felt like a very cookie cutter first episode and a few more afterwards. If you read it on a technical level, down to the minute details, you can deconstruct it down to the point that it doesn't work, but the first episode just perfectly captures the feeling of being othered and then finding a space where you can be more like yourself, through and through. Even the prisoners in the Conformatorium play a big part here because they form a touchstone for Luz to more explicitly realise that the world (both worlds) will ostracize some groups of people for no reason other than the fact that they're different. And personally while it does flow differently to the later episodes I really liked a lot of the humour in the first episode.
But I also enjoyed the body swap episode, so there is that
Edit: to be fair, I didn't go into TOH blind, and I knew less about Amphibia going in on that side, but I still enjoy re-watching the first episode and I think it only needs a few minor tweaks to make it great, and I still think it's worth saying that Amphibia's first episode isn't objectively better

As I grew to appreciate Luz as the protagonist as the show progresses, she didn't leave a good first impression on me. I don't have a problem with the message itself (being a weirdo isn't a bad thing), if anything, I can relate to that message because I'm an autistic guy who's obsessed with anime, video games, superheroes, and other geeky stuff and I have trouble fitting in with other people, but there's need to be a balance to make the message work and the way Luz behaved in the first episode was very concerning. She causes disturbance and is about to spread chaos at her school when she brought snakes and fireworks, and they tried to paint Luz as sympathetic and expect us to side with her to stay at the boiling isle for summer? I'm sorry but I agreed with Camila's decision to send Luz to Reality Check Summer Camp because she needs to get her act together. It's a really good thing Luz improve through season 1 and takes things more seriously with reality in season 2 because if she stays exactly the same, she probably would be frustrating to sit through.

I disagree - it's made very clear that Luz isn't intentionally causing chaos; to her, she's enthusiastically throwing herself into the activities she enjoys. I get that she was a bit much in most of those examples but to me that doesn't prevent reading her as sympathetic, and the response being sending her to "Reality Check" camp might be heavy handed but makes it very clear that she's unsupported and misunderstood, and personally it took me all the way until the end of S3E1 to forgive Camilla for her response to Luz's eccentricity. Luz is shown as being different in a way that isn't actually bad (2 of the examples of her "acting out" were pretty innocent, and the others were still well intentioned) and the response of most of the humans is trying to force her into the mold of a "normal" person. This all comes up again in S3 when Camilla is processing all of it, and personally I think it pays off quite well by giving the writers an opportunity to develop her as well.

@@bosstowndynamics5488 I didn't say Luz was creating trouble on purpose, what I was trying to say is considering her incidents cause disturbance and harm to those around her, especially bringing her fireworks and live snakes to her school (which I remind you her snakes did attack her classmates and her own principal) while Luz doesn't seem to have a problem with it, it doesn't make me feel sorry for her, it makes me want her to get some help. That's why I agree with the principal and Camila's decision because she needs to get her head straight with reality which thankfully, she did later on.

    • @bosstowndynamics5488
      @bosstowndynamics5488 Рік тому

@@firemaster9293 Have you watched season 3 yet? Luz absolutely had development to do but the show is *extremely* critical of the approach taken by the adult figures in her life. The camp was called "Reality Check", and had the tagline "Think inside the box"with a picture of a child who looks like he was beaten into submission, it's not being even remotely subtle that the "solution" being proposed here is to force Luz to be "normal" rather than working with her to grow and improve in a way that actually works for her. The first episode of season 3 develops this idea a lot further through Camilla's ruminating over the whole thing - the school very much did think she had intent and wanted to punish her differences out of her. Luz goes through a lot of growth through S2 and S3 in particular but she's not even remotely close to the person the school wanted her to be by the end of it.

@@bosstowndynamics5488 I did watch season 3, I'm talking about my first impression of the very first episode. I said in my very first comment that I grew to appreciate Luz as the protagonist as the show progresses, but she didn't leave a good first impression on me when I started watching the show since 2020. Also, this video is meant to analyze how and how not to start off the show with Amphibia and The Owl House, not meant to judge both series as a whole.

idk, I think the big thing for me is the Owl Houses first episode really drew me into the world. The concept was immediately interesting, and the prison break scene left me interesed in the Owl House's government and politics. Which the series delivered on.
Amphibia didn't do that too much for me. It was still interesting, it just didn't draw me in as much until later.

11:00, I thought about that but I already figured it out, it is simply because of Belos, since he was the one to set up his guards, the warden *ahem*, who goes on to make the "prison place" with the help of Belos's tech which is why only a human can enter through it. Although yes you can attribute this to Dana's lazy writing but at the end of day she did later on reveal a human character in the Boiling Isle and I will admit, that lazar thing was not a foreshadow because no way she thought that ahead; although could be possible, either way there you go.

That being said, I feel like it might be more a coincidence than anything else? Pretty sure it’s set up that Belos is a recluse that rarely ever leaves his castle, and the contraband is pretty clearly Warden Wrath’s area of expertise. I can absolutely understand if that was meant to be setup, I just personally don’t see it!

I gotta say the owl house did NOT have the impact of any proper pilots to a show should've had nor did the following few episodes throughout season 1(even in s2 there were some cases of poor pacing but I'm not gonna get into that). Something about the execution just always felt a bit off and that lack of investment just dragged on until the latter half of the first season. I remember constantly rolling my eyes over all the bits of set up being way too cliche or the barely touched upon resolutions. But the humor improved immensely so I guess that was enough to keep me around.
Which at the end of the day, I'm heavenly grateful for
The owl house was surely one of those big hitters and we were fortunate to be graced with its presence

The first season of the owl house really feels like a totally different show than the rest of it and I wonder if that’s due to not having much of a plan.
We know the show was basically rewritten after learning the third season was cut but even then there’s not much within the first season that goes to an eventual endgame.
Meanwhile Amphibia pulls a gravity falls in how much was setup and would later be paid off pretty well from the calamity powers being hinted at so early and of course the whereabouts of Anne’s friends.
It’s all so interesting on a second watch that owl house doesn’t ever seem to get

Am I the only one who dislikes the Owl House series finale for how it kind of invalidates Luz’s overarching arc. Luz learned in WBW that she is not really a chosen one, but she has to make her own destiny. Then WAD makes her a chosen one and has her given powers by the Titan. I would have had Luz die, but King die too in the scene with Titan Belos. This way, King would have not only gotten to meet his dad, but then he could get Titan powers to fight Belos while Luz forges her own path and leads the fight against Belos from the inside. It feels like they just wanted to throw in an anime form for the fans.

He knows Lilith is a traitor from the beginning because of the time travel episode, hunter is well, complicated and kikimora, his closest supporter he despises, he’s rather cut of his arm than trust her.
