- Here’s some examples of using one chord shape area to play over all three chords in a blues.
Listen closely to what you’re playing and stay in one shape at a time for some good practicing.
Of course to expand deeper into these techniques and tailor it to your personal playing style and skill level, please check out guthrietrapp.com for all my four private lesson tiers and immersion experiences.

A lot of people have been contacting me asking where the tip jug link is. Here is the Venmo one -
www.venmo.com/u/GTOinc Thanks so
much for helping to support this channel! Lots more to come and we can not do it without you! GT (PayPal and all other links in the description below all videos)
Killer chops! All staying in the 1,4,5 progression. You’re no slouch, Guthrie. One of the best guitarists in the world.
Oh man. Thanks a bunch. I’m one of the guitarists in the world. Ha
Guthrie is all over the place with his teaching - but if you're already familiar with some of these ideas and shapes, there are many gems to be mined. Great video. Thanks.
All the information holds true throughout though.
@@guthrietrappmusic Totally. It's studded with gems (as I said). Guthrie, I'll be in Nashville second week of July. Will you be playing at The Underdog? Stoked to see you play live of so!
I'm so grateful for these videos!💀 I create notes on my iPhone with time stamps on specific parts throughout the videos to pinpoint things that are specifically helpful for me. Incredibly helpful, thanks so much Guthrie
This is almost like we get to just sit in a room with you and try to absorb some of your musical knowledge. Thanks for doing these!
More to come!
I was going to say it's almost like we get to watch a UA-cam video of you playing guitar.
Looking forward to seeing you at guitar camp in NY . Hopefully some your awesomeness will rub off on me😀
Can't wait!
I like the quick explanation with lots of content. I can replay this video over and over. I also like the different variations of each phrase. It’s an easy way of expanding your vocabulary.
Glad it was helpful!
Man this was great and so much of what we heard but not sure how and where to play...
Thank you brother 🙏✨️
If I understand what you are saying. I take it as a question. Where to begin?
22:21 quote: “Just listen and look at the chord. Try to stay in that shape.” I think that was the E shape A shape and C shape. ( I think that may be an A major 7 shape). Then he shows you to play the scale around each chord shape. These chord shapes come from the CAGED system. Each shape is naturally associated with a position on the neck inside of the associated scale. So, E major scale, A major 7 scale, and C major scale. You could use the E major pentatonic, A major pentatonic, and C major pentatonic if your scales are rusty. Then backfill the major and major 7 full scale notes later. I am just spitballing. I am open to being corrected in any of this if it is incorrect. I don’t know fuck about shit.
It can be a large pill to swallow depending on what your level of knowledge is. For him to present the material to you here would be long and drawn out for a public video. For one he can’t know where you are at. What do you know? Where do you want to go with this material? Etc.. I would make the assertion that this is an intermediate lesson at minimum. Just to be square I am a beginner posing as a beginnermediate. I know the caged system ok in major and minor. I will have to dig out my major 7 chart to open this can. It is my intention to be of assistance on your journey. But as I said I don’t know much to actually help beyond what I shared here. Take any of this with a pinch of salt.
May I suggest Email bookings@guthrietrapp.com to sign up for a lesson. I am a broke ass, so I would really enjoy hearing back on how the lesson goes for you. A few hours with Mr. Trapp should level you up for sure. I mean night becomes day kind of playing experience. Rock on brother 😎
Good God man. You make blues worth listening too!🎉
I appreciate that!
Whether you like it or not you're making me a better guitar player LOL,, thanks for the tasty bits Guthrie
Yeah it's been a minute, so tasty bits. These cats are great

And to others: let’s hit that tip jar!
Thanks again!
1, 4, 5 blues by GT all day, Baby! 🎸👌
This just keeps getting better and better, video after video. Thanks GT!
Glad you enjoy it!
07:31 😂 You r my man! maybe that's y u so good!
Cool hat!
it's awesome watching you share your music knowledge so freely and live your best life.
I appreciate that!
your playing and all your instructional vids you put up on UA-cam, changed the way i approach guitar, things make sense for me now more than ever, i can only say big thank you for sharing all your knowledge, you may be just one guitar player in the world, but you're defenitely my favorite one, that's for sure! so happy i got to know you on your gig in Madrid (Cafe Berlin) hope you come to Barcelona next time, best!
Awesome lesson, Guthrie. Thank you! I think it's so useful to get a sense of (infinite) possibilities in one position, before getting felled in efforts to see various positions all at once. Like trying to build between neighborhoods before really focusing on getting a first house built. Chunk size pieces. If players can see the house in one position, and really get used to how the house goes together, and why it's built that way, it sure can make it easier and faster to see and to hear and to build in other locations. Then, connecting neighborhood parties can really roll from there! Peace. Love. Music.
I love it! Even a guy like me can follow along and start to pick it up.
Thanks Guthrie. You’ve have an endless supply of tasty licks. Top class as always.
Glad you like them!
Wonderful playing and explanation. Great stuff. Jack Pearson is amazing - I hope whatever kept him home is getting better and we see more of him.
Another great lesson, and your right theres no future in getting old.

Great to hear!
VERY good to hear that Jack Pearson is out & about again ! Looking forward to his return to form
Thank You Guthrie !
Thank you for the excellent lesson, showing several different ways to play over the 1,4,5 progression. That variety really accelerates my learning.
Glad it was helpful!
Guthrie - Might be my favorite video so far, got a ton out of it. So many useful / reusable licks and phrases…thank you. I’m still a guitar infant trying to find my voice and these 20-ish minutes went a long way to teaching me to speak! Heading to Nashville in Nov and plan to stop by the Underdog the Monday we are in town. Will say hi if you’re there. Appreciate all you do for us, thanks and all the best!
Glad it was helpful!
Pure Gold once again. GT is pure inspiration.

Weeks ago, I asked GT if most of what he’s playing is made up on-the-spot and “heard” internally just before he plays it. I didn’t get a response and that’s totally ok. But this video made him mortal. He actually learns licks. 😁😆
Not licks. Ideas 😎
@@guthrietrappmusic 🤘🏻Heard.

Nice! I especially like the part when the horn section comes in, and the piano solo right after is cool too. I will borrow heavily from this. Thanks.
Glad you like it!

Hey man would you explain how to go about starting to use your fingers besides the ones holding the pick to pluck notes at the same time? Like which ones should you use etc...
That is one of the best Fathers Day gift. Mom will have the kids, so I can deep dive into the 1-4-5. I have a lesson in a couple weeks, can’t wait!!!

Great advice...
These videos are like panning for Gold. The nuggets are here everywhere you just have to work for them. Thanks Guthrie when are you coming near Boston?
I got something out of that. I already know the chords/shapes but you show me how to not be boring with it.
By the way, that might be your best hat
Thanx mr Trapp god bless Guthrie
Great stuff once again!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you for the lessons where you give me ideas and how you think about the fretboard. It helps immensely with creating new pathways through changes instead of just stumbling around until I accidently land on a chord tone.
Way cool! Greatest Guthrie!
Thanks!
Hey, GT! 💪
Ya got a new head lid! 🤔
Oh, such sweet notes you're puttin' out.
Lovin' it. 😘
When i see it's one of your videos, i always click the "like" (thumbs up) button. Before even listening, cuz of course it's gonna be good!
Yeah, a liesurely drive through the country in TN is awesome!
6:30 Sounds like you walked into a "green room" of All Stars!
Must've been inspiring, if not a bit intimidating...
Pat McCune , says hay to ya Guthrie.
Holy crap Guthrie, in 15 minutes you give me a months worth of studying and practice. Just keep it coming.
Thanks Guthrie!
You so good
Beautiful and inspirational as usual...
Btw i blame you for making me buy a telecaster last week. Also your curriculum is kicking my ass.....playing blues and metal for 30 years isn't the same as country apparently....highly recommend it though for those interested in learning.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks man a nice labyrinth of classy licks
Just brilliant, so grateful passing on your knowledge to us heathens
Wonderful music and insight. Thanks very much Guthrie.
Keep it coming
More to come!
