CONTENT WARNING: Maybe don't watch the first few minutes while eating.
The long-awaited sequel to the 2007 Xbox 260 classic Overlord, Unicorn Overlord is a strange way to take the franchise. It bears a striking dissimilarity to the original and development has been handed off to the Japanese team at Vanillaware. *What? This isn't a sequel to beloved classic Overlord and that game had a sequel in 2009 Overlord II? What? It had two spinoffs? One on the Wii and one on the DS? What? Are you sure? 100%? You're positive? Whelp. You know that explains a lot now that I think about it.

Even though I haven’t gotten around to purchasing UO I like how there are still game devs out there making games for this niche genre.

This game was such an amazing experience. Such and fun and simple story that kept hooked for days and the gameplay was surprisingly deep and challenging without feeling too overpowering (did not try hardest) and the exploration and just fine tuning your troops was so addicting! Hope this game did well so they Vanillaware will do more amazing games such as this

Quite spot on man. I even agree about Dragon's Crown, but I'm not a beat 'em up enjoyer at all, so that was expected. (Haven't played 13 Sentinels).
The music in the UO demo might be what sold me on the game at launch. Sadly I got burnt out before the end. That's probably on me for playing the game too much and trying to do all the side content, but I didn't run into that issue with Triangle Strategy. I have to say, I got a little bored of the pure "weakness exploiting" gameplay, as it felt like the game was designed for you to optimize the fun out of it. When you have unit types that completely negate other unit types, combat starts to feel like where you're just putting the square shape into the square hole to win.
Even if you have to effectively program your units' behavior so that they attack the right targets in the right order, and min-max their stats so they have enough initiative and red/blue action points to do what they gotta do, the problem is that the outcome of every fight ends up being far too pre-determined, simple and predictable. Once your teams become optimal, it feels like the game just plays itself and you're lucky if something ever challenges that. Because of this, I had more fun watching fights play out in Ogre Battle 64, even though all you could really do was choose "focus lowest HP, focus highest HP, or focus leader" and try to manage your alignment. The plot in OB64 also kept me more engaged throughout, though UO has likeable characters.
Despite its flaws (imo), UO is still one of the better games that came out this year and it definitely scratched that Ogre Battle itch. Thanks for the video!

Totally agree with your assessment. Having certain classes have specific foils does limit player expression in how they build their team. But it's mostly the story that kept me from falling head over heels for Unicorn. It might be the de facto 'B+' for me.

I get burnt out on them every couple of years and have to take a break but I'm back baby! Look forward to my Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis review in the somewhat near future. Just finished my first playthrough of it a few minutes ago.

putting a scene of someone vomiting in your video is pretty shitty. My fault for thinking I can relax and eat while I watch a video game review I guess. Was looking forward to this video, too. Aw well. Best of luck to you. I’ll resub later on if I run into your channel again. I loved this channel and I love this game but that’s just slimy and irresponsible.
