I actually like the name. Unicorns are a very underappreciated mythological creature and it's nice to see the name attached to a powerful word like Overlord, rather than keeping any association to unicorns as gentle and demure.
Have you seen Vanillaware's interpretation of a unicorn? It's this giant fucking horseman wearing heavy armor with a big shield and lance. It's pretty fucking badass.
Seems they understand that more cooks doesn't equal better food. Smaller teams usually make better quality products across the board since they can avoid all the growing pains of large, corporate environments. This is why indie games regularly outperform the modern "AAA" gaming industry.
@breakerdawn8429 Ubisoft is also very decentralized across countless studios across the world. So it's a bit misleading. That being said, ubisoft games are awful. But that's also why you get some good ubisoft games like the Mario vs Rabbits
Fun fact it also took them 22 years with 39 employees to finish this unicorn overlord, it took them extra time to come up with a name for the game. In the end the developers daughter walks into the office asking her dad for a unicorn, that's where the name came from.
I’ve been a massive Vanillaware fan for nearly 20 years now and I can tell you, they NEVER dissapoint. They are, with FromSoftware ans Supergiant, the only studio whose games I buy eyes closed because I know they just make bangers after bangers. As for the story of UO we might be surprised of how events turn out, the story of 13 Sentinels, their previous game, was probably the best sci-fi story in any game since Mass Effect.
Apparently Kamitani doesn't have as deep of an involvement as in many of Vanillawares previous games, so I would not assume the story to be on the same level of complexity as 13 Sentinels. But we can't be sure until we see of course.
@@umernaYeah, Kamitani has already been working on his next project after he got done with writing/directing 13 Sentinels. He's barely involved with UO, I feel like a lot of people who only know VW because of 13 Sentinels are gonna be dissapointed because of that. I don't mind though, gameplay looks amazing. I'll be happy as long as the story is at least decent. Vanillaware's New Year's 2024 artwork straight up looks like it could be a tease for Dragon's Crown 2, and I dearly hope that is what Kamitani's next project is.
@@Konfide4043 There are back alley resources to rectify that problem. 🦜 Especially since the official emulation purchases on the Wii e-shop are long gone. It's a bit more simple in those game where you just moving from battle to battle, but the encounters are fantastic. Best start with the final game Ogre Battle 64.

Look... I get why the name sounds cringy but could have been worse and they are showing their confidence the name is just the cover and the content is what will make the name memorable, like in this case the demo has completely sold me.
Glad lots of youtubers are highlighting this game. I didn't think I would like it, but its one of those games that once you play it its really compelling.
Squad based combat like this... The first type I played this was in Ogre Battle 64. It was really fun and no game has really scratched that itch. Unicorn Overlord has hit that nostalgia. Also, this is probably the first time I have heard you praise a game so highly. I look forward to you playing the full game sometime in the future.
Agreed. I've been waiting for some sort of sequel to that, but looks like this game will work for me. The art style looks like a newer version of that.
Regarding the Japanese vs English, as someone who can read the Japanese portrayed: I can see where some of the beef came from. I was definitely not happy with the fact that Chloe berates Lex constantly, when all she really says is stuff like "I'll watch your back", and "I agree with Lex" in Japanese. The English had her say stuff like "I'm of like mind with Lex, what little mind he has." Like, why are you making her so mean, translators? I get that it's a common anime trope for a badass girl and himbo boy to fall in love later, but let the *Japanese* make that trope, not Americans! On the other hand, there was one point, young Alain saying "I'm fine, go on ahead." in Japanese, and "Aren't you going to help Mother?" in English, and the Twitter thread claimed he was acting "accusatory" in English. I didn't read it at all that way upon first playing; it just seemed like a young child who didn't understand the severity of the situation, which is true both in English and Japanese. He thought Josef could help because it was just a little bad guy stirring up trouble. To make it seem like Alain is being mean sounds more like the guy was projecting *wrongness* onto the English before even giving it a chance. So there were definite points I said "You're right, that's a little egregious", but also there were parts where I said "no, that's the same meaning in both English and Japanese. You're just going out of your way to find that it's bad because there's controversy recently." I've translated some things from Japanese, and even I feel like there are points where I've translated something that I feel sounds *right* to the lore, only to find out that the official translation is completely different, and honestly *wrong* . I've had people accusing me of "AI Translation" as a result, so I can see why a lot of these bilingual people are angry and much more scrutinizing of these new translations. But at the end of the day, I think that Unicorn Overlord's translation, while having some weird and awkward moments, does not detract overall from what the story is trying to say. Now, if there's a "Patriarchy" line or overt modern idioms like "yeet" after the 8 hour demo, THEN we can start sharpening our pitchforks.
I didn't preorder it because I want to give people like you a bit of time to dig up potential "patriarchy" or "eating this pie made my face take an unappealing expression" levels of localization. Thank you for your service o7
@@phoenix.8679 I think that that's the best way to determine this stuff. If gameplay is all you really need (and honestly you can skip the story stuff, the game tells you what sort of enemies you'll be encountering in a given fight, so you can learn what's what without the flowery language) then it's easy to just preorder, skip story, and go from there. If you're a story nut, like I am, it's best to hold off just a bit until we figure out how this stuff is going to turn out. Be patient; the game will still be there a few weeks down the line :)
@@benjaminpevzner6261 Oh definitely, it's really an annoying thing that started, from what I remember, with Final Fantasy 12. But I remember the translator for Final Fantasy 12, and he did a really great job with the script. That's why, despite *my* general dislike of it, it's not a deal-breaker for me. It's a sort of way to distinguish it from parlor tricks/"nothing up my sleeve" magic, because wiccans use the CK to say it's "real" magic. Which kinda makes sense in a fantasy world. It just doesn't make sense to call something magick in *our* world. ...(Because Wiccans aren't actually using real magic, fite me nerds :V) Like I said in the other comment though: I fully support people not preordering this game if that's the kind of stuff you dislike. Please wait for others to comb over and check it out first before spending your money if it's popping a red flag for you. I hate preordering anyway, because I've been burned by it once or twice; I never want people to think they should have to because "HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT, BIGOTS!?". All I want is for people to get both sides of the argument and make their own decisions. If their decision is to wait, or even not buy it, I am also in full support of that. :)
@@charlettmoon2693It's not even about that, really. I'll take a wonky AI translation over someone's attempt to "fix" the japanese product and try to shove their ideology down my throat any day. I would've even bought Engage despite it's story and characters. Gameplay and even the character design (pls put away the pitchfork) was good, but I'm just so done with this bs.
I feel like people confuse "simple" with "bad" a lot of the time. Engage has a bad plot, a story that negatively impacts the enjoyment of the game. A simple story executes itself without issue; it may be predictable, but it's still has no underlying writing hiccups, inconsistencies, etc. Engage had All of those issues in spades: inconsistent characterization, convoluted pilot points, an antagonist with constantly shifting goals, unjustified time travel, inconsistent behavior, and inconsistent lore building... The list goes on. When a story is so poorly executed that it fails to contextualize the gameplay, it's bad. Story is literally why the events of the game are happening. If it doesn't make sense, the gameplay has no reason to be there. There is nothing wrong with a simple story. In fact, many of the simplest stories are the most enjoyable because they are executed from start to finish without any issue. If unicorn overlord has half of the competency in its story writing as it does in its visual and gameplay execution, we have nothing to worry about. "Simple" story or not, it'll still be a good game. Simple doesn't have to mean predictable, and simple doesn't have to be boring either. It's really how the story is told.
But still I'm still hoping for a plot twist on UO story once the full version was released. Even if it is confirmed that the writer of UO is not the writer of 13 sentinels (the game that mindblows me because of plot twist), I'm still hoping for plot twist because it's Vanillaware afterall. But yeah I agree with you about what you said on a well executed "simple" story.
This game seems to really scratch an Ogre Battle itch, which is pretty nice. Edit : I feel like Valmore is likely gonna just be mind controlled himself and that's why he's just evil yadda yadda
You know the amount of Valor Points and the speed of the timer are meaningful because you're playing on Expert, on Normal you'd get more Valor Points and have more time on the timer. Almost as if experienced strategy players should try the highest difficulty of a new game first to see if it's manageable :P (also almost all games allow you to turn the difficulty down at any point now in case it's an Awakening Lunatic/3H Maddening situation)
Yeah It's manageable. To rant tho most games nowadays just keep getting easier. Expert mode is like normal mode of older games. I wish it was a little harder but I still love the game so far.
@@XFR18 Yeah, it's also my main gripe with the game so far, I just hope it ramps up after the early game. With everything else gameplaywise not being very comparable I don't think it's necessary to expect that the early game will be the hardest part like in FE either. Worst case there'll probably at least be some challenging postgame/NG+ content, Vanillaware usually does stuff like that
It is possible to make Unicorn Overlord a bit harder on yourself depending on what you do though, when i played the demo I recruited the archer, the mage, the hammer guy and then went straight to the final map of the demo to save scarlet and that map is tough when you don't do a lot of exploration ahead of time but doing maps above your strength level is so fun in this game.
Its pretty much Vanillaware's version of {Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen} with essentially the same type of gameplay. That game was very fun old strategy game and I hope this one will also be the same experience. Anyone interested should search up the old game to have a good feel for this new game.
Yeah. I have a soft spot for the Ogre Franchise. I played Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together on PSP after Final Fantasy Tactics War Lions on the same system. There are 5 games overall without remakes. Ogre Battle on SNES and N64,Tactics Ogre on SNES,then Ogre Battle on a Neo Geo Pocket or some other handheld and Tactics Ogre:Knights of Lodis on GBA which I wished I kept and played to full.
Soul Nomad is another Ogre Battle inspired game that's disappointingly underrated, that no one played. These kind of squad based auto battler rpg games tend to mostly be mobile/online games, like Atlantica Online, Raid Shadow Legend. Where they seem more popular, sadly. Good to see a developer release one of these games as a single player game on console. Last Remnant is the last one of these squad based auto battlers I remember playing on a console, and that was released almost 20 years ago.
@@ZX-Gear NIS has loads of ambition, interesting worlds and ideas. But yeah, shame no one buys anything to make an impact on the company besides Disgaea titles.
Can't wait for Friday for the release of this, I'm gonna snag it at midnight immediately! It's got such heart and soul in it that it is absolutely stunning, gorgeous even. I'm so excited!
5:30 a cool thing about valor is you lose some if you let a unit get wiped out, and if a town you liberate is recaptured you lose that valor and get less when you retake it. Ps sorry i had the game pre-orderer months ago but it was a very good video
I pre-ordered this game months ago, and I'm very much looking forward to it. It's much more inspired by the gameplay of Ogre Battle than Fire Emblem, and that's a good thing in my book. The Vanillaware graphics and charm are the cherry on top!
The lack of permadeath is something I have always liked about tactical RPGs like Shining Force: the player is not afraid to use units as a resource, and the game's difficulty can be tuned around the possibility of units being viewed as "expendable".
The only squad based SRPG combat that's sort of similar to Unicorn Overlord on PC (that I know of) are the VenusBlood games, but those are less polished and have lengthy visual novel sections. Hard difficulties on those games are *chef's kiss* though.
Considering vanillaware is a Japanese dev, and a small one at that, I don’t think they had the time, budget, or experience to do so. Add in they would focus more on graphics and making sure what platforms they were on ran smoothly, as well as their history (none of their games has been on pc)…it’s not reasonable to complain. You are better off requesting the PUBLISHER Atlus for one and then pray they know a good team that vanillaware could trust.
Saw this game out of the blue via a page talking about Ogre Battle which I never got to play. Came to this video. Got the demo. Played til 20 mins left. Got the game. It's a very chill game as far as tactical JRPGs go. Feels like the quality of life and autobattle features just make it a breeze to play. Big fan of gambits and autobattling in this genre, focusing on the management side. Unicorn Overlord feels like a unique take on Fire Emblem where it complexifies everything, but balances it out by making most of that automated and fast-forwardable.
I try not to get hung up on things like unicorns, the color pink, Sailor Moon, My Little Pony, Kirby etc. This just leads to "little man syndrome" lol. I think the title of this game has a "regal" ring to it, (like "Radiant Silvergun" or something!)
Im a huge vanillaware fan and a big srpg fan. Im very excited for this. Preordered months ago. One of the few companies ill do that for. So glad you gave the demo a shot.
Did you know that switch about to turn 7 in Japan on March 3? Crazy how much rpg games we all played for this one small console :D Oohhh so many good memories back in the past ^w^
The stamina system is great. It feels like a less punishing Alignment/Charisma system Ogre Battle had. In Ogre Battle you could have one defensive squad and one overpowered squad steamroll everything. But odds are your OP squad would have a terrible alignment, thus resulting in you being locked to chaotic classes, poor reputation and eventually a bad ending.
The demo felt like bg3 alpha "Shut up and take my whole act 1 in full glory" First time in a long time where skipping battle animation just to play more was painfull, they should have unlock the whole act
The first Vanillaware game I ever played is Muramasa The Demon Blade for the Wii which was an absolute blast to play and every Vanillaware game I played after that was also pretty cool despite them jumping from genre to genre. Unicorn Overlord feels like a game I played called VenusBlood (Frontier, Hollow, and Gaia are translated) but with a much smoother introduction to the game mechanics so it definitely looks right up my alley. I also do recommend the VenusBlood games for anyone looking for something that's turn-based but with gameplay cranked to 11. In VenusBlood Hollow and Gaia, you go from 6 unit squads to 18 units battalions with 3 squads of 6 in each battle.
Agreed on the name! I love it! 😂 Other people hating on it, calling it bad or cringe or whatever. They know not a great name when they see one. Commoners! 😂
Aye the other notable piece of media name after the unicorn. now that I think about it, media that has unicorn in its title, is about as rare as the unicorn itself.
same was sceptical with the name unicorn overlord until i played the game itself. it has the feel of final fantasy tactics, fire emblem, brigandine and valkyrie profile.
From what I have seen the "limitation" on grinding is what you have already seen with Josef. If you are too many lvls higher than the enemy, (I think it is around 3ish) you only will gain 1exp for each unit killed. In fire emblem this could always (at least in the games where you could) be circumvented by the fact that the exp needed to lvl up was always 100, where here it exponentially grows. And with how things have seemed with the game, just being a couple of lvls higher than your opponent won't really be the difference maker, it'll be your tactics and your squad makeup and synergy, and I like that a lot more than how FE games handle it cause it might mean that there won't be an arbitrary difficulty spike cause the devs decided to give the enemy an extra 5+ lvls because they expected you to grind a lot.
I especially enjoy playing around with the skill conditions. You can really hone in on things, some conditions will skip the whole command if not met, others just revert to normal targeting when not applicable. The fact that the right side Condition 2 is the first one processed in battle tripped me up though.
Condition 2 isn't the first processed, Condition 1 is always processed first. This confusion is caused because 2 different SORT ("The skill will override default targeting rules") style conditions are set in a tactic. When the game checks a tactic it will generate a list of viable targets with their order being based on the default targeting rules. Assuming a CHECK style condition (User has less than 100% HP for example) doesn't skip the tactic entirely or a FILTER style condition doesn't wipe out the entire list of viable targets (target flyers against a formation with none of them), the SORT conditions will get a chance to be used. The 1st SORT condition will reorder the targeting order as expected, but then the 2nd SORT condition reorders that list yet again. The end result is that the 1st SORT isn't used for anything other than deciding ties for the 2nd SORT. I experienced this first hand in the fight against Bruno. I had Travis tanking Bruno's 2 Gladiators and a Housecarl formation (4 attacks total), and had his steal Tactic set to highest PP for condition 1 and lowest HP for condition 2. Bruno starts with 2 PP, so you would think Travis would open the combat by striking him and seizing both for himself, but I was wrong. he hit the generic Gladiator next to Bruno instead because he had the lowest HP in the front row, and missing out on that extra PP caused him to get KOed thanks to not having enough PP to protect against the attacks that got through his natural evasion. I reloaded a save from before the fight and swapped the 2 conditions and everything went according to plan that time. Of course I could have simply removed both of those conditions from his steal and got the same results by placing him in front of Bruno too, thanks to the default targeting rules prioritizing the front row over the back row, and then in the case of a tie choosing the nearest target in that row. A good example of the FILTER and SORT type conditions is flyer and prioritize flyer. The former removes all non-flyers from the targeting order, while the latter puts the flyers at the top of the targeting order. There are still problems with the system, like how buffing a particular Infantry unit that isn't the fastest isn't really doable without jumping through hoops. They need to add "Is (Class)", "Uses (Weapon Type)", or even "Not (Unit Type) to fix this up. Buffing the physical attack of a caster should never happen. We also need to be able to force the standby action in the tactics menu. There are some times where launching your attacks in round 2 might help lead to a better outcome thanks to the slower units getting off potent debuffs at the end of round 1.
After playing the demo I kept cteeping your channel to see if you'd talk about it. The music and even some of the menu sounds just give me such fire emblem vibes. Wildly excited for the full release and excited to see whatever content you make for it !
I was able to play the demo for 30 hours by save swimming. (Saving before cutscenes, watching them, then reload and skip. Thank you Vanillaware. You've given me so much time killing for free.
Got to say that when it comes to the localization and translating, the examples shown in this video seem like improvements. The dialogue has a sophisticated fantasy flair to it and the meaning isn't being changed. I also don't see any political messages being jammed in during the translation process. Who here is going to honestly say that they prefer... "You can say that, but...!" to "Perhaps, yet the danger to Scarlett grows with each grain passing through the hourglass." Looks like there's a clear winner to me and if they hadn't been doing it this way we'd be talking about how boring their dialogue is instead.
All I can say about the criticism against localizers taking liberties is just be glad it's not the people from Working Designs in the 90s, they butchered the games they localized with so much dated juvenile humor and topical real world references of the time period.
From what I've seen this looks like the spiritual successor to Ogre Battle that I've been waiting for. Im trying to calm my excitement as I was excited over Triangle Strategy and that turned out to not be so good.
I played the demo for Triangle Strategy and decided against it. Something was missing. Unicorn Overlord, on the other hand, had me pre-order the Monarch Edition as soon as I finished playing the demo for 5-6 hours straight.
I've been playing this game a lot and really like it. Just wish that this Vanillaware wasn't alergic to PC... My Desktop and steam deck yearn for this game
Great video. Old school Vanillaware buffs, however, will attest as to the continuity of “odd” naming trends that follow a uniquely Japanese high fantasy history. 😂
Vanillaware is a sign of quality as far as I'm concerned, I haven't played a single game from them that wasn't at least good, and usually they are beyond just that. So you don't have to convince me!
I watch Mangs for Fire Emblem and you for Ogre stuff, so it's cool that this is the first game that's really interested both communities! The Ogre Battle resurgence is coming.
This game is a day 1 buy from me I grew up on ogre battle. I always end up circling back to mangs we play the same games what can I say? Great content keep up the good work! :)
Each grind spot have level to each of them, and if your character level is more then character you just defeat, it give very little exp. I feel like those grind spot are more for new recruit.
Unicorn: Mythological intrepretation of real life rhinos taking the form of a one-horned celestial horse capable of murdering the wicked, healing most maladies and being only tameable by the most pure hearted. Gamers: Don't know, sounds kinda silly. Why not DrAgoN? I myself may be partial for the mythical creatures of water and darkness, but I can't deny the unicorn is such a exemplar representative of the aspect of light that unicorn overlord very well sounds like a kickass title for a warrior of justice and righteousness like we seem to be following in this story.
Unfortunately, Unicorns aren't exactly known for being tough as rhinos. I'm down for something to redeem its reputation as a savage sin-smiting salvific stallion, though.
>another Mangs scripted vid drops >Its a Unicorn Overlord video and how good it is VERY nice. Agreed about the dumb name, reminds me a little too much of Triangle Strategy's name problems lol. I think the story will be executed well enough in the full game based on Vanillaware's other titles, they have a unique way of doing their own thing regardless of what they decide to do. I'd be surprised if the story ends up being as predictable as it looks right now. (For reference, they have made games stories and settings ranging from the golden age of D&D, 80s sci-fi, Nordic mythology, and old Japanese mythology). As for difficulty... I wouldn't be surprised if there is a difficulty after beating the game, they've had that in other games. (for example, in Muramasa Rebirth, a crazy 2D action game from them, there is an unlocked difficulty that has you playing the game at 1 HP). In terms of the localization controversy, I think that's a fair enough assessment even if I'm more hardline. I think that its a better translation than Fates and Engage, yes, but I don't believe that makes it acceptable (but that's more because I care very much about anything Vanillaware and feel it deserves the most care, they put in a lot of hard work into the game and deserve a faithful translation). I'm glad Fire Emblem and TRPG fans will finally get some good food.
xp gains tanks really fast, the moment you hit 3 levels above the enemy you gain next to nothing. So grinding is only intended to bring your army to even levels. And after seeing the datamine, the amount of xp you need to level up... yeah, only die hards would try to level up needing lets say 20k xp while gaining 1xp per win.
About your worries with the Unicorn Ring(8:37), I think Josef mentioned that some of the people in the Zenoiran Empire are serving willingly. Yes, I do believe the queen and the royal guard will all be fought and playable at some point; however, every other character is up in the air.
Finished my time with the demo and found an amusing softlock. Had a squad with Protag, Clive, and a soldier on the battle where you recruit the witch and I was impatient waiting for the witch to get to the boss so used the knight's valor skill to rush the boss for a little chip damage. Unfortunately I got stuck between the boss and the environment behind them and ended up in an endless battle loop at 0 stamina where neither side could deal net damage, but the knockback never knocked me away. Hopefully that gets patched because after 5-10 minutes and overleveling my units I had to reload my save. Really looking forward to the launch of this game!
13 sentinels took my ass by surprise and made me remember this studios name now this game just speaks to me as someone who loves Tactical RPGs. a year and a few months after Fire emblem engage too
I played the demo and there was no monastery/somniel. After the prologue and tutorial battle (which is not very long) the game is open world with missions and battles that you encounter on a world map.
I recently got burnt out with FE after a Sacred Stones playthrough. After seeing the stream for this game I was a little interested but wasn't sure since, I have plenty of games in my library to play. I got the demo today and it was so much fun to actually play it. I cannot wait to see all they have in store. Figured I would play it alongside your playthrough of the game.
I'm so happy that before the tutorial start with move/prio assignment to characters. When I saw the kills and Conditons. I SHOUTED GAMBIT SYSTEM!!!!! I'm really happy that some devs are appreciating FF XII best gameplay feature.
I thought I wasn't going to like it cause of the real time elements but nah, they did a good job making it super accessible and fun. this is no twitch reflex star craft or whatever. I love it.
9:40 Ok, that's definitely making major creative decisions by the localizers. Even if it's good, which it might in this game with adding more flowery language like that, that is not your job as a localizer. At least they do still have the characters say the same things, but they're still very much overstepping their bounds. That attitude itself is big red flag for that localizer, at least.
It seems like everything I dislike about the writing is from the localization. Localized comment: Alas, it would appear that all my disdain for the words and tales of this game has come not from the pen of the developers, but the hand of one much closer to my own home soil.
Honestly, I actually really like the name. It did look pretty fun but I wasn't positive on the whole combat mechanic, never really liked that format. But watching you play it, it did make it seem more enjoyable than I would have thought. I'll probably be trying it out soon.

Kinda like Triangle Strategy.
I love the name. It's very unique comparatively
You shouldn't sleep over VanillWare's amazing catalogue.
Their games are insanely good.
You can feel the stats in this one
Glad lots of youtubers are highlighting this game. I didn't think I would like it, but its one of those games that once you play it its really compelling.
Squad based combat like this... The first type I played this was in Ogre Battle 64. It was really fun and no game has really scratched that itch. Unicorn Overlord has hit that nostalgia. Also, this is probably the first time I have heard you praise a game so highly. I look forward to you playing the full game sometime in the future.
Agreed. I've been waiting for some sort of sequel to that, but looks like this game will work for me. The art style looks like a newer version of that.
That's exactly what I've been telling people. Unicorn Overlord is the sequel to Ogre Battle 64 I've been wanting for 20 years.
I keep checking every day to see if there is any info on the trophies for this game. As long as it's no crazy online ones, I should be fine with them.
You're just going out of your way to find that it's bad because there's controversy recently."
I've translated some things from Japanese, and even I feel like there are points where I've translated something that I feel sounds *right* to the lore, only to find out that the official translation is completely different, and honestly *wrong* .
The fact the dialog contains the word magick again and again in the english translation is a red flag
It just doesn't make sense to call something magick in *our* world.
...(Because Wiccans aren't actually using real magic, fite me nerds :V)
Like I said in the other comment though: I fully support people not preordering this game if that's the kind of stuff you dislike.
100% agreed, Engage is also cringy af
There could be no story and I'd still love Unicorn Overlord. I don't need a story to play a game.
This! I feel like UO proves that a simple story can be good and not cringe. Engages cringe was just unbearable
But usually most people like to have a story, especially if it's an RPG
But still I'm still hoping for a plot twist on UO story once the full version was released. Even if it is confirmed that the writer of UO is not the writer of 13 sentinels (the game that mindblows me because of plot twist), I'm still hoping for plot twist because it's Vanillaware afterall. But yeah I agree with you about what you said on a well executed "simple" story.
This game seems to really scratch an Ogre Battle itch, which is pretty nice.
Edit : I feel like Valmore is likely gonna just be mind controlled himself and that's why he's just evil yadda yadda
I mean FE does the whole gemic alot if it done well it done well. And UO does it well
INB4 it's revealed that the wizard guy from the prologue turns out to be the main villain lmao
My prediction Valmore is actually our father Star Wars style.

I played black queen the story what story. Now orgre battle 64 and tatic orgre their story are great.
@@henrymapleton Yeah. It is an NIS game that wasn't Disgaea. Such is life.

There's an 8 hour demo if you can't wait
One week away. I’ve played the demo so much and I want more so bad.

Ps sorry i had the game pre-orderer months ago but it was a very good video
the demo lets you play "5" hours but don't count the start and pauses btw. my playtime was about 8 hours to
I pre-ordered this game months ago, and I'm very much looking forward to it. It's much more inspired by the gameplay of Ogre Battle than Fire Emblem, and that's a good thing in my book. The Vanillaware graphics and charm are the cherry on top!
ogre battle..... what a gem that game was. Tactics ogre as well.
The lack of permadeath is something I have always liked about tactical RPGs like Shining Force: the player is not afraid to use units as a resource, and the game's difficulty can be tuned around the possibility of units being viewed as "expendable".
It is a real shame that this game happens to EXCLUDE PC, because I would have loved to get it on Steam if it did get a release there.
They don't want my money, I play it for free. It runs great on my pc. If they release it on steam, I will buy it.
I've heard second hand they're afraid of piracy, hence don't realease it.

The most fun I've had in YEARS. Love this game.
I try not to get hung up on things like unicorns, the color pink, Sailor Moon, My Little Pony, Kirby etc. This just leads to "little man syndrome" lol. I think the title of this game has a "regal" ring to it, (like "Radiant Silvergun" or something!)
Rolf that is a good unit? Oh that’s just Donlot’s God Rolf in his PoR maniac ironman
It is Rold that looks like Cyril from FE3H, who was good archer.

Mangs is against mind control as a plot device, but he’s ok with using it on me to download the demo? These double standards…

The demo got me addicted. Can't wait for the full release this week.
People who are put off by the name don't deserve this beauty.

I've been following this game since I got an email from vanilla ware 2 years ago with only the logo in it.
Unicorn Overlord. Such a badass name!
Agreed on the name! I love it! 😂
Other people hating on it, calling it bad or cringe or whatever. They know not a great name when they see one. Commoners! 😂
After Gundam Unicorn I've learned not to underestimate the Unicorn. It's a beast of possibility.
Aye the other notable piece of media name after the unicorn. now that I think about it, media that has unicorn in its title, is about as rare as the unicorn itself.
It's a Vanillaware game. That alone is reason enough. I really wish 13 Sentinels and this would get pc ports.
Ogre Battle spiritual successor. 'Nuff said.
No way you said "insanely stupid name" in a genre that released "triangle strategy" a while ago 💀
same was sceptical with the name unicorn overlord until i played the game itself. it has the feel of final fantasy tactics, fire emblem, brigandine and valkyrie profile.
I havent been this hyped for a game in a while
From what I have seen the "limitation" on grinding is what you have already seen with Josef.
This comes out before my birthday this is gonna be a nice little present for me thanks manga for introducing me to this little gem
As a Vanillaware fan, and the game coming out my birthday, my only option is playing it.
"You can say that, but...!"
to
"Perhaps, yet the danger to Scarlett grows with each grain passing through the hourglass."
Looks like there's a clear winner to me and if they hadn't been doing it this way we'd be talking about how boring their dialogue is instead.
I remember thinking as I played the demo, "I betcha Mangs will enjoy this."
The game might get harder later on. It's only the first area.
Also, it's made apparent that not every villain is mind controlled.
9:10 the doujins also write themselves with that plotline
It reminds me a lot of Grand Kingdom. The skills the different classes have looks like it’ll be useful

Old school Vanillaware buffs, however, will attest as to the continuity of “odd” naming trends that follow a uniquely Japanese high fantasy history. 😂

Also the Unicorn is a very important figure in this game lore so the name makes a shit ton of sense.
Unfortunately, Unicorns aren't exactly known for being tough as rhinos. I'm down for something to redeem its reputation as a savage sin-smiting salvific stallion, though.
Plus a unicorn's horn is the main ingredient of Panaceas granted at the cost of the Unicorn's life.

VERY nice.
Would love to. But it doesn't release for PC.
Thanks for coverint this Mangs, Would look into this game
I’m convinced!
Definitely going to get this game. I saw a lot of good things during your demo playthrough. :)
As a fire emblem and an ogre battle fan.... yes. All the yes.
About your worries with the Unicorn Ring(8:37), I think Josef mentioned that some of the people in the Zenoiran Empire are serving willingly. Yes, I do believe the queen and the royal guard will all be fought and playable at some point; however, every other character is up in the air.
I played the demo of this game and instantly fell in love with it
Finished my time with the demo and found an amusing softlock.
13 sentinels took my ass by surprise and made me remember this studios name now this game just speaks to me as someone who loves Tactical RPGs. a year and a few months after Fire emblem engage too
Is there any kind of somniel/monastery ? Is it possible to go straight into action ?
I played the demo and there was no monastery/somniel. After the prologue and tutorial battle (which is not very long) the game is open world with missions and battles that you encounter on a world map.
@@Alliclare Good news, I hope the "open world" is not mandatory.

Looks interesting, Scarlett has big bazookas, I'll check it out
Honestly, I actually really like the name. It did look pretty fun but I wasn't positive on the whole combat mechanic, never really liked that format. But watching you play it, it did make it seem more enjoyable than I would have thought. I'll probably be trying it out soon.

It doesn't scratch the FE itch, it scratches the Ogre Battle itch

I haven't enjoyed a strategy game like this since Symphony of War.
