No I'm sorry he didn't it had nothing to do with Johnny Wilkinson... Robert Wilkinson produced the first detailed maps of New south Wales, Australia in 1794 and was one of the first people to map the newly colonized country along with large parts of Asia ... that's why he called it Wilkinson Land .

When a teacher teaches using comedy it sticks. You retain it, it becomes a memory.
We ALL remember that teacher and what they taught us. The days with them don't merge into one long day.
Peru was where Paddington Bear came from. His name came from the Railway Station which was his final destination. Al used to be a History teacher before moving to comedy, a loss to the teaching profession.
Technically still is because he's still very knowledgeable guy.

Another great thing about Al Murray is his interaction with the audience at the beginning of his shows. He remembers the names and things about them so he can use them later on..

Good Reaction, as usual, Guys.The "II8Der" Indian joke was that the Phone Line "118118" was the British Line that we called for general information based in Newcastle( called The Geordies) and they asked for too much money to continue their Government Contract and so the Business went to Indian, where they, probably, paid 1/10th of the price for the Indian people to give us general information. The Brits insult those they love the most*** and if we do not insult you on a personal or National basis then that is negative. lol(

The character that he plays is a pub landlord. As a kid in the 60's most all of the pub landlords would, especially as the night wore on and they'd had a few drinks, start lecturing the patrons on all manner of subjects and opinions. They seemed to love nothing more than having an audience. Often outrageous with their stories, more often wrong on facts, they were nevertheless highly entertaining. The following morning they'd be grumpy as the inevitable hangover kicked in. Almost all had a great love for king/queen and country and the armed forces, many of them were ex-servicemen. Often you'd see them wearing a blazer and tie in their regimental colours and with the badge sewn onto the breast pocket. The only difference between Al's character and the real life landlords of old is that Al knows what he is talking about, especially on history. Glad you enjoyed it, all his stand ups seem to be part comedy and part a lesson you didn't know you wanted to learn :D

This is a great routine from Al Murray and you can see that his passion for history really comes through.
His routine about the British never losing a war is really funny.

The galapagos Islands where we the British invented evolution was a reference to the British man Charles Darwin who came out with the theory of evolution after studying the animals on the islands in the 1800s

The squirrels bit is a hark back to his TV series Time Gentleman Please. The Pub Landlord has an ongoing vendetta against the squirrels who keep nicking the customers crisps and peanuts and leaving them around the beer garden.

Peru - He was referring to the story of "Paddington Bear"
He had already spoken with the audience before this part of the show, that’s how he knew some of their names, where they are from and what they did for a living.
Wizard was a band and they had a Christmas song called, I wish it could be Christmas everyday 😆
one of the great things about Al Murray is no matter how many times u see his clips or shows u can watch them again and not only laugh to the point of crying but also pick up the odd salient fact u mighta missed the first time around or have gleaned some information that makes u understand a quip he comes out with that didnt hit the previous time
you have to remember (or know f you have not been told) he is a character, its a role. He is playing the role of a Stereotype, who see's the world in Stereotypes.
The Stereotype he is playing is a proud nationalistic type English dude that you tend to meet in Pubs in the UK (mainly England) that has a certain level of Education that is quite high, but is also somewhat warped by a totally overly patriotic lens so a lot of that factual information is warped into a Stereotype. The genius of it is, the more he takes the piss out of everyone else, he is in fact taking the piss out of the English, and there is another layer, because his character is a Stereotype he is also taking the piss out of the audience. So its like a 3 level irony thing, but full of observational wit. The character is full enough of fact to believe, but warped enough that its actually propaganda, if you break it down. I think some of the levels of this are even missed by some UK folks.
To be fair its almost impossible to get all the jokes fully if you are not from the UK. You have to have encountered the people his character has borrowed from, and also understand that this is a stereotype of those guys which is both taking the piss out of those characters bit also the stereotype itself, even though its somewhat true. All the Stereotypes that Al utters, are also semi based in reality but also completely either over the top exaggerations, or faulty logic that is exposed when things are not just taken at face value.
Finally there is a more direct commentary on Imperialist Britain, and its a double edge thing because it is a positive framing from the character, but a more negative framing by the performer.
I am sure you have the same thing (just in a slightly different manifestation of it) in the US with people who are too patriotic, but know just enough fact to prop it up in a semi convincing package, but with further probing it falls apart.
In a way South Park performs a similar function in the US , at least in regards to the angle it is viewing things through, basically several layers of irony, even if the way it does that is completely different.
He has a history degree it's why he knows so much.
He refers to Australia as 'Wilkinsonland'. Australia hosted the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup. The final was between Australia and England, which England went on to win with a memorable drop goal from Johnny Wilkinson.

The country’s he missed come under the term “ the Womble country’s” which is one of those inside jokes. Referring to the wonbles of Wimbledon, an old children’s program. 😂😂🇬🇧🙏🏻

Not quite right. One of the characters in the Wombles TV show was called "Uncle Bulgaria". Hence the reference to Hungary , Romania, Bulgaria as "the Womble countries".

Great Uncle Bulgaria as you stated was what Al was referring to suggesting that the Balkan states all sound like wombles names although no other wombles were named from around that region... just incase anyone is interested.......there was Orinoco ( river) , Tobermory ( Hebrides) , Great aunt Thessaly ( greece) , Great , Great uncle Hohenzollern ( near Stuttgart in Germany) , Hoboken ( Belgium) Stepney ( London) Alderney ( channel islands) ..... there are more but I can't remember off the top of my head right now .
He described the Swiss as, "Plucky" and it got bleeped out.
Plucky: having or showing determined courage in the face of difficulties.
I think he was referring to the fact they remained 'neutral', refused to fight and were custodians of millions of pounds worth of German gold and treasures they looted. The Swiss were never, ever seen as 'plucky', merely as collaborateurs.

The Wombles reference is from a children's TV programme in the 1970s - 'The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we'. India & 118 refers to the call centres that moved from the UK to India in the early 2000s.

I'm chuckling away at these two, both with a cluless smile on their faces as the point of the joke goes right over their heads. I appreciate that they don't understand the competitive infrastructural nature of the four British nations as it is historic and can be quite subtle, somewhat akin to American states, e.g. southern states, the billy-bobs of the south, as the Irish are to the English, hence, digging the roads. Actually the Irish were instrumental in helping to build the British infrastructure, i.e. roads, canels etc., known as navvy's. (navigators) large contigencies of Irish moved around the three countries, many settling perminently. The Irish are strong, brave, and likable people.
I love the fact that you pride yourselves in having freedom of speech but thought Al had possibly stepped over the line a few times ironically enough. He's one of our tamer comedians material wise.

Freedom of speech is what allows discrimination in our country. In the uk they have freedom of expression, aka laws that allow freedom but protect people who can be discriminated against for disability, age, religion, sexuality, race etc. us needs to do that @@BoringReviews
Most of these jokes would be understood by a UK audience. For somebody outside the UK about 40% would go over your head.
Well done guys......I take my hat off to you, having to cope with strange British accents, humour and localised facts or urban myths that you may never have come across before. Keep up the good work and if you get the chance, check out the "Secretary" sketch by Al.....one of my favourites.
Thanks for your reaction. However, one simply has to be British to appreciate all the cultural references in his act. There are numerous subtle 'digs' at stereo types and historical events that can only be fully understood if one is a native Brit. But props for trying..

He hasn't done too badly with his historical knowledge around the world after his History Degree from Oxford University. He knows a thing or three.

Silly question: do Americans know that many of their cities and towns are named after places in the UK. Al mentioned just a few there in his sketch. As an example, The village I live in is also a name of a place is Texas. My village is over 1000 years old.
Not a silly question at all. But the answer is sadly...NO. I know the following was made for fun and the people shown were cherry picked for his tv show...but do a search on here for Jay Leno's clips on testing students and young people on the streets in America, he does one segment specifically about students and geography...again cherry picked so only showed the 'dunces'...but they were still students we are talking our version of college education level. Jay himself is stunned. I've no doubt a similar pop vox clips segment could be done with our students...lol. Have a look. I would argue many English students know the answers.

Al Murray (pronounced Murry) spends time before his shows talking to members of the audience, so he has an idea how far he can go when singling out people in the audience during the show.
His character as the "Landlord" is a xenophobic bigot, this seems to be observational comedy. I love it.
I believe he studied Modern history at Oxford, he has also made documentaries.
I am lucky enough to have seen him live a couple of times

Good reaction. Please at some point watch some more of his stuff. His take on national anthems is superb as is his piece named All jobs are terrible. A much under reacted to video by Al is What every parent must know. I do hope you get round to viewing all three of those.

A large percentage of the troops who fought on the Government side were Scots.
Flodden would have been a better example when the English kicked our arse.

118dia is a reference to company call centres, that you call if you have a problem. They used to be mostly in the UK and a lot of them were in the Newcastle area where 'Geordies' hail from. But as is always the case with companies these days, most call centres have been relocated to India on the grounds of cost. The upshot of this is that the line quality is poor making it difficult to hear and be heard, and you end up talking to someone whose first language isn't English, and who can't really understand the problem you've got and are trying to explain to them - resulting in getting zero satisfaction and a fraught stressful experience.
I work for one in Gateshead.
Moved from Newcastle, though.
Every British person would get every reference.
To use cricket terms, in regards the flirting vs harrasment, he got a fine edge on the ball before it hit the pads.
I think Al was saying America got out of hand because the Brits wanted to tax them and get rich but the Americans fought and won their independence, really starting the demise of the British empire (which a lot of Brits in hindsight recognise had to happen, sooner or later).
Get a grip, mate. Al is playing a character, a xenophobic British landlord, who we have all met, but most of us wish we hadn't. He's taking the piss out of the British. 1776 the end of the British Empire? Really??? REALLY??? FFS. The colonists were not taxed for profit, but to pay, only in part, for their defence against the French, who were hell bent on eradicating them and establishing their own colonies. Once the French had been seen off, the colonists decided not to contribute to the cost of their own defence. Charming. Funnily enough, after independence, which was won solely due to French intervention, America refused to recompense the French the huge amount they had spent as well. You must be so proud.

You didn't get the 118 India joke, (but why would you?). You would need to know that India has been used to outsource a lot of call centre work. When we phone large companies for customer service, we are often transferred to a call centre in India as it's cheaper to run it there than in England.
118 is a service that replaced our telephone directory enquiries, by dialling 118 118. A big TV campaign was made at the time, and the calls sent to India.

As an Aussie it still hurts, even people who weren't born then know about it.

I was too young to be in a pub then but I was in HK watching the 2015 cup, the Brits were gutted being knocked out of the pool. Don't blame them. The final I went into pretty well expecting NZ to obliterate the Wallabies and well, it was fun and everyone enjoyed the match and too many beers were poured at an hour that felt so wrong.
