There was another video that mentioned this, but it's worth bringing up here. In an Xfinity race, at 5 PM with 3 to go, Elliott Sadler was spun to put the race into overtime. By 5 'till 6 he was BATTLING FOR THE LEAD. It took them an hour to run the final laps because of unlimited overtime attempts.
What they really need to do is go back to single file restarts for overtime. The biggest problem here is having too many cars bunched up together and that's what causes wreck after wreck after wreck.
I'm firmly in the 1 OT attmpt camp, and I have been before this stupid race. If the best drivers in the country can't behave themselves for one restart, then that's on them for being sloppy. Also, I hate calling it overtime. Can we please bring back Green-White-Checkered? It sounded way better for a racing series
Call me crazy, but, we limit the attempts to 3, however. After the 3rd attempt, we use the overtime line, but the line is at the 75% maker on the track so theres still a chance to get the race finished. Only one attempt to get to the overtime line, gives 4 attempts, and still a chance to finish the race if we need it. Which most the times hopefully we only need 2 OTs
The current point system was the biggest factor to that finish. There was way to many drivers in that points don’t matter mindset risking it staying out low on fuel. Limiting the OT attempts would just lead to more controversy because we know nascar has a hard time being consistent.
Here is a hot shot idea. Unlimited restarts, however after the third OT caution- the whole field comes in to pit (no position changes) and every consecutive third OT restart is a mandatory pit. All drivers will have the best equipment chance & enough fuel to race to the end.
Safety Cars breed Safety Cars. If we want to decide a race winner and/or a season champion by the best driver and team combo, then we stop at scheduled distance. If we wanna play bumper cars and decide a champion like it was done in the Wild West, then have unlimited overtimes And if we want complete insanity, how about at the start of every overtime we role a 6 sided die. If its a 1, we go racing as normal. If its a 2, every driver must change all 4 tyres. If its a 3, we do a standing start. If its a 4 we do the final two laps backwards. If its a 5, we run sprinklers to wet the entire track on any track. If it’s a 6, the winner of the race is whoever crosses the finish line in 10th
A friend of mine suggested they do overtime in terms of miles and not laps. Let's say we have only 1 overtime at every track but its 5 miles. So at Daytona it'll be 2 laps, Bristol it'll be 10 laps, Charlotte it'll be 7 or 8 laps. You can still have a caution and a restart during some of these tracks but you're not extending more than you already have. Scenario would be at Bristol, 3 laps to go caution, restart the race with 10 go go, caution with 7 to go, restart at 3 to go, caution with 2 to go, ends race under yellow.
Ok, here's an alternate idea: Unlimited overtime restarts, but all overtime restarts are now mandated as single-file (no choose cone). There's still the possibility of multiple OT restarts, but the hungry drivers aren't packed together and tempted to ship it 4 wide into turn 1.
I think 3 overtimes is actually a good system, NASCAR has those long finishes that keeps popularity and teams won’t lose *as much* money as they would with 5, it’s a win win
Another good idea is not counting caution laps once they reach 10 to go, because if there's a caution with like 5 or 6 to go, it doesn't just become a 2 lap shootout where everybody drives overly aggressive
I like one overtime of around 5-10 laps. They can restart as many times in between with cautions but it won't run more than 10 extra laps period. Laps run to clean up or reorganize the cars into position do not count towards the 10 lap limit as they must be 10 full speed laps. Then if there is a caution on the final overtime lap then the field is frozen at the point of crash and the officials can go back and declare winners.
I agree it should be 3. This race was kind of an anomaly and it usually only takes them 1 or 2 restarts even at places like Daytona or Dega. 3 max we would still get a green flag finish 95+% of the time but would hopefully eliminate the dumpster fire we saw yesterday.
I think we should go to the schedule distance. Yes it’s less dramatic but it’s bad for the sport to see the best drivers in the world crashing at every restart attempt and I want the most deserving drivers to win that’s also why I don’t like stage racing.
Gonna throw something a little different out. Rather than a set number of overtime attempts, have a countdown timer once you hit the scheduled distance. The time could vary based on the track, but imagine only having 20 minutes to figure it out regardless of how many overtime attempts they have it has to be done in that time window. If the timer runs out under caution then whomever is ahead is the winner. But then, I also think they should impose the rule that every short track I know of does where if you spin someone out and it causes a caution you go to the rear.
Unlimited overtime opportunities under the same format, BUT at the end of regulation, the field is hard frozen, and everyone gets a free pit stop, similar to the Clash halftime stop (no one can change position during the free stop, if a second stop is made, then so be it).
Yeah Harvick was VERY smart with that rule. It was a broken rule and also the Chase format that's still being used today is VERY broken so yeah the best driver all season was about to be eliminated and he took advantage of the rule.
I would be happy with one shot at overtime but with the caveat of there being strategically placed faux finish lines around the track that whenever the leader makes it to that line, that is when the yellow comes out and freezes the field. And I do not even mean that far apart. Maybe, every 1/2 mile on 1.5 mile tracks and bigger and every 1/4 mile on tracks smaller, have a white line across the track. This would allow for some sort of finish and for safety crews to get to drivers quickly.
Same here, most races wouldn't have a good finish without a green-white-checkers, and I wouldn't feel robbed of a possible exciting finish if a race where William Byron had a 5 second lead ends under yellow.
And have the toxic Elliott narcissists pelt the winner with trash because he was ahead with 5 laps to go? Not a good way to showcase the sport, esoecially after Jeff Gordon living through that scenario
Its fine the way it is. NASCAR overreacting to rare occurrences is usually what people complain about. Same people wanting 0 OTs are the same that complained when NASCAR overreacted to Watkins Glen last year and the stage cautions returned. I guess its okay to overreact if the result is something that is "gOiNg BaCk To ThE gOoD oLe DaYs" to this braindead fanbase.
It was not nascars fault people stayed out when they knew they are probably not going to make it and teams shouldn't have the information that it cant go 2 GWC past the race length.
I think it should be time limited based on how many miles. 299> 2.5 hours max, 300-399 3.5 hours, 400-499 4 hours max, 500 miles, 4.5 hours. The 600 max of 5 hours. Plus 60-90 minutes extra due to rain after stage 2
Last week we were discussing how drivers and teams should've been allowed to self police themselves with Wet or Slick tires. Now this week we discuss whether NASCAR should police the drivers on Overtime finishes. Make it make sense.
I would say keep it unlimited with the exception that after a certain amount of attempts to do single file restarts Single file restarts after 1-3 attempts would limit the chaos while still given a higher chance to complete the race under green.
Quintuple overtime: an event so rare that it has never happened until now. Yet, some whine like they have had to endure the end of the world and others celebrate the rare and entertaining treat that the chaos provided. I wouldn't change a thing unless we went even further on the unlimited overtimes with the addition of it being required to finish under green.
I highly disagree with the opening statement. Unlimited overtimes add drama. Considering how bad passing was. And the fuel strategies used. Caused the chaos at the end. Which isn't a bad thing
Right?! The most chaos came from guys running out of gas! The strategy play was crazy and wild to see it all work out. The only way you could have avoided that much chaos is to of told the drivers and teams they HAD to pit. Short of that there was nothing to be done and that's not even a discussion worst having lol.
Overtime in NASCAR has become as outdated as the payphone. I said it should be the scheduled distance on Sunday, and I'm sticking to that. People need to understand that NASCAR isn't a stick & ball sport. In sports like baseball, football, hockey, and basketball, we have overtime in the event that there's a tie between the teams after 9 innings/4 quarters/3 periods of play. In NASCAR, we never have that problem.
@@PaperBanjo64 Especially since NASCAR emphasized about how they're trying to help save teams money and help them make more money with the charter system. If people haven't figured out by now, neither of which are happening.
I will get hated on for making this idea but hear this one out. Instead of doing an Overtime like we've been doing or doing a schedule only thing. How about this. In Iracing, The Street Stock series (C class) on short tracks does this thing where if a yellow comes out, all laps are not counted until the race is resumed. So my thinking is this, why not do it in the cup series (Or really all 3) once you get to 10 to go, and it counts down per yellow flag? So once the leaders cross the line it'll count. BUT, laps during the pacing do NOT count. This will improve strategy and make the teams have to be calculated as to not make any mistakes per Restart and have to be civilized. Now, here is where people will get testy here. How will 3 to go work? Same, but here's the catch. Once you cross 2 to go. It keeps going until last lap. Now here is where it gets interesting, once last lap is thrown and a caution is thrown out. It CANNOT go over that. You HAVE to cross the line no matter what. So this would be treated like a Overtime but you only get 1 lap to do it once the green is thrown. (Green White) So if you have idiots crashing, here is what it would happen once you're in a Green White phase. NASCAR itself will penalize ANY driver who wrecks anyone or deliberatly tried to cause a crash during this phase. You get sent to the rear or parked. No exeptions, and they have to see what happened. If you're wrecked out or you wreck someone else out, you pay minor fines for causing big ones when you should of been more careful during this phase of the race. (This would encourage teams to make sure their drivers just take it home and not just bin people or themselves out of a race) Mechanical damaged cars that throw a caution due to themselves wrecking out will never be penalized, everyone just sets up and resets. (However if you just get in peoples way when you cause a crash or a pile up, a heavy fine will be applied to that driver of that team) I know this is a odd ball idea, but I figure this would probably promote a good racing product vs what we got as options by NASCAR right now in it's current state vs the old ways. If you don't like it, comment why. If you think it's a cool idea, same thing. Pin this if you legit think it's a amazing idea that should be discussed as a solution.
The race was a mess? I think you mean drama-filled? Logano endured to the end. It was crazy that he was able to save fuel for that long. This is an outlier finish. A closer has to be able to win in any circumstance. Sometimes the race is rain-shortened, sometimes it's a green white checker finish, sometimes your setup is bad out of the gate and you have to adjust it like crazy to get it to be a winning car, sometimes you get spun out and have to come back, etc. Chaos is good if it's fair chaos.
Penalize intentional wrecks or cautions, but these are best of tge best; they don't need their hands held. Maybe limit the overtime in trucks and xfinity, but not cup.
None. Seriously. No overtimes. Why bother when it could also end under yellow during OT? Race the scheduled distance. So what if it ends under yellow. Oh, and thanks a lot, Cindric!
I believe that NASCAR should keep OT's attempts unlimited still. It would be a big risk to limit the amount of OT's especially down in the lower series. More mistakes, inexperienced, and dumb driving are in the lower series. I believe as all fans, we want to see the race to end in excitement no matter what.
It's interesting cause in europe majority of persons hate how F1, WEC and other GT series can finish under caution. Majority of people founded the race amazing 😅
3 overtimes is definitely the most default one. But here's honestly what I'd do with overtime. 2 attempts First attempt is Double file But if we don't get to the white then the Second attempt will be Single file. It'll really be a way to show the drivers that they need to race with respect especially in overtime.
Rules should not change based on outliers, especially at a track the size of Nashville. If every superspeedway race ended with five overtimes, then okay, let's look at the rule. Smaller tracks never come close to what we saw at Nashville 2024. Keep it as is, and if overtimes start becoming increasingly more chaotic and running as deep as they were, then okay. It's like baseball adding in the "ghost runner" on second base in extra innings. What they should have done was change the rule to where that runner doesn't come into play until the 13th inning, or something like that.
I think there should be 3 attempts like in 2010, I don’t think we’d ever go back to schedule district ending it or one attempt, but it’s clear unlimited attempts are too much. Also kind of related to this, I think they should race back to the line, but only on the last lap.
Honestly, set a time limit, like F1 has (with limits two hours of on-track action, and 3 hours [counting red flags] from the start of the formation lap). F1 had the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix take 4 hours to finish, and something was done about it. I can't see why NASCAR couldn't do it.
How many attempts at OT do you think NASCAR should allow?

Call me crazy, but, we limit the attempts to 3, however. After the 3rd attempt, we use the overtime line, but the line is at the 75% maker on the track so theres still a chance to get the race finished. Only one attempt to get to the overtime line, gives 4 attempts, and still a chance to finish the race if we need it. Which most the times hopefully we only need 2 OTs
This is actually a good hybrid idea
The current point system was the biggest factor to that finish. There was way to many drivers in that points don’t matter mindset risking it staying out low on fuel. Limiting the OT attempts would just lead to more controversy because we know nascar has a hard time being consistent.
Here is a hot shot idea. Unlimited restarts, however after the third OT caution- the whole field comes in to pit (no position changes) and every consecutive third OT restart is a mandatory pit. All drivers will have the best equipment chance & enough fuel to race to the end.
I think just 3 attempts, no more. Like the “3 Strikes, You’re Out” rule/lyric
Safety Cars breed Safety Cars. If we want to decide a race winner and/or a season champion by the best driver and team combo, then we stop at scheduled distance. If we wanna play bumper cars and decide a champion like it was done in the Wild West, then have unlimited overtimes
And if we want complete insanity, how about at the start of every overtime we role a 6 sided die.
1 attempt is enough because Unlimited attempts at Overtime are an absolute buzzkill and sad that it took 5 OTs to finish the race yesterday
As many as it takes. And I say that even though I don’t care for the winner.
Short answer: Unlimited!!!!!!!
I think NASCAR needs to not call a caution unless its ACTUALLY NEEDED
Ok, here's an alternate idea: Unlimited overtime restarts, but all overtime restarts are now mandated as single-file (no choose cone). There's still the possibility of multiple OT restarts, but the hungry drivers aren't packed together and tempted to ship it 4 wide into turn 1.
One shot overtime with no double file restart to the advertised distance
1 Green White Checkered attempt with a single file restart. This will help limit the chaos and give a better chance at a green flag finish.
One overtime was great. I wouldn't be stuck watching for an extra hour after the race should've ended.
I favor two overtimes. 1st overtime: Green, White, Checkered. If it goes to a 2nd overtime, have a one lap shootout: Green/White, Checkered. 👍🏁
Yep system fixed.
1 and done, or none at all. That's it
The fact people are saying that Unlimited OT's are a great way to end a race, proves they're not real racefans
You people seem to think that way but unlimited restarts don't normally go over 3. So I don't get it.
@Lowlife-jc8us Does last years Trucks Series finale ring a bell??
The overtime was the only entertaining part of that snooze fest.
Unlimited overtime opportunities under the same format, BUT at the end of regulation, the field is hard frozen, and everyone gets a free pit stop, similar to the Clash halftime stop (no one can change position during the free stop, if a second stop is made, then so be it).
Three max, but don't do the one GWC overtime
Remember - Fall Talladega 2015 race proved that was broken
It wasn’t the 1 attempt rule’s fault, it was NASCAR’s fault
Yeah Harvick was VERY smart with that rule. It was a broken rule and also the Chase format that's still being used today is VERY broken so yeah the best driver all season was about to be eliminated and he took advantage of the rule.
I initially assumed you were going to speak about the #8 driving in reverse in NASCAR
1 Attempt.
Dude it was an amazing race/end to the race yesterday, enjoy this racing it is extremely entertaining and competitive
New video series... "Who win's the Championship if OT did not exist or if there was only 1 OT"
I’ve been morbidly curious about that statistic, how many drivers would have won if races just went race distance but lost the win to overtime.
3 in history seemed to do fine because it at least puts a limit on it. Ain't no one gonna want 5 or more restarts tbh.
My preference is no gimmicks. Scheduled distance and that’s it
Same here, most races wouldn't have a good finish without a green-white-checkers, and I wouldn't feel robbed of a possible exciting finish if a race where William Byron had a 5 second lead ends under yellow.
Shouldn't be any overtime. Not racing. One of the things i agree with the f1 people about.
AS MANY AS IT TAKES!!!!!
Hell no, the race should run to the advertised distance and NO FURTHER
My first choice is "Caution laps don't count within the last 10 laps of a race." 2nd choice is 2 Green-White-Checker
Short answer: 0
And have the toxic Elliott narcissists pelt the winner with trash because he was ahead with 5 laps to go? Not a good way to showcase the sport, esoecially after Jeff Gordon living through that scenario
You would be okay with races ending in yellow?
@MCC-fo1oe yes, that's how most motorsports are
One race with tons of overtimes and here we go with fans wanting NASCAR to change their rules again. 🙄
Go back to the old way: within 5 laps it’s official
1 overtime if you crash the race is over
Its fine the way it is.
I would say keep it unlimited with the exception that after a certain amount of attempts to do single file restarts
Single file restarts after 1-3 attempts would limit the chaos while still given a higher chance to complete the race under green.
3 is enough I think. No matter what happens on 3rd OT, it is final
I’ve always been race to scheduled distance or one attempt at a GWC finish
It’s manufactured, phony drama. If that’s what you want, go watch an opera.
Yes to all points! Teams owners should start complaining it costs money and to get rid of it.
@@PaperBanjo64 Especially since NASCAR emphasized about how they're trying to help save teams money and help them make more money with the charter system. If people haven't figured out by now, neither of which are happening.
@@nascarfanatic2425 and these new cars are way more expensive than it was building the old cars in house.
(Green White)
So if you have idiots crashing, here is what it would happen once you're in a Green White phase. (However if you just get in peoples way when you cause a crash or a pile up, a heavy fine will be applied to that driver of that team)
I know this is a odd ball idea, but I figure this would probably promote a good racing product vs what we got as options by NASCAR right now in it's current state vs the old ways.
I believe as all fans, we want to see the race to end in excitement no matter what.
we should definitely go back to 3 overtime’s
It's interesting cause in europe majority of persons hate how F1, WEC and other GT series can finish under caution. Majority of people founded the race amazing 😅
I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way it is now
3 overtimes is definitely the most default one. But here's honestly what I'd do with overtime.
2 attempts
First attempt is Double file
But if we don't get to the white then the Second attempt will be Single file.
How about time? An extra 5-10 minutes. That fits well with networks, and at the end of that time the next flag ends it
I think there should be 3 attempts like in 2010, I don’t think we’d ever go back to schedule district ending it or one attempt, but it’s clear unlimited attempts are too much. Also kind of related to this, I think they should race back to the line, but only on the last lap.
Zero overtimes. Make it like the old days where the race can end under caution. Sorry Dale Jr fans.
Go to the schedule race distance. If it ends in under caution, so be it.
None. If it’s a 300 mile race, end it at 300.
