You look like Starsky of Starsky and Hutch, the 1970s detective show. Paul Michael Glaser.
I have heard that before. When I was in my residency years ago, I would periodically have several women over the course of a week or two tell me that. Figured that one of the TV stations (pre-600 digital channels) was running reruns. Ha!

Great presentation on psyllium’s protection on heart health, and removal of toxins thru regular easy well-formed stools. I have begun using it daily for one month. I have never felt better! I wish somehow I’d heard about this years before!!! It should be recommended by family practitioners, especially for diabetic patients.
Thank you for your caring post❤
Thanks, Jennie. Yep, I for sure know when I am using it consistently. I just feel better. But thanks for the feedback!
I've been in the alternative supplements industry for 25 years. I'm personally not a fan of Psyllium. The reason is the ratio of water consumption needed to the amount Psyllium consumed by the Average American is typically never followed. The average American will read that it helps with constipation and not consume psyllium along with adequate water intake. When water consumption is ignored the individual tends to be laying "cement" and getting the opposite biological response than originally intended. For this reason I find that Freshly ground flax seeds are more beneficial for improved bowel health. Would be great to see you do a 2 week experiment using fresh ground flax seed (Golden Flax more specifically because of the higher fiber content) and do a video on your discovery. Thanks for your support of integrated medicine and the dedication to share your perspectives and educate the public. Take care ...
I always consume 20 oz of water with psyillium husk. But I’m not the average american.
That's a good, point, andI agree that most adults in our country are deficient in... well, you name it. I do like the flax, and it has the benefits of the omega-3 fats as well. Point taken. Thanks for your input!
I appreciate this comment. Point taken. Drink plenty of water.
True be careful with psyllium husk not only it needs lots of water it can take away efficacy of certain medications.
I drink 1 gallon of water a day. Is that enough for taking psyllium daily?
Keep the videos pumping! Thank you.
Thanks, Athaion. I've had to take a break for a few months, but I'm getting set to restart posting. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi Scott, Loved this video! Thank you for telling us the importance of taking psyllium. Tess Rogers
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for all your videos! I've learned a lot from them. Here where I live it's difficult and expensive to get access to medical advice like this, so I appreciate so much your effort in sharing your knowledge with us. I hope that you could go back and keep on doing the videos. Have a nice day!
Camila, thanks so much for your comment. I am going to restart the videos shortly, like in a few weeks. I am actually in the process of developing a process by which people like you can access functional thinking in an easy and at-home environment. As a MD, I realized that 90% of what I was doing with my functional medicine patients, did not require a DEA license. I've also developed a new, systematic , simplified way that our biology fits together. It's medicine 'deconstructed' with a functional bent, and the teaching, access and functional process will be completely identical to what I did with my patients.
The whole point is to make this thinking and approach to medicine available using the same tests, supplements and protocols I used. I can simplify the process, keep the costs way down, and walk people through the steps needed to really get healthy in a short period of time with measurable results.
Anyhow, I'm excited to gear all of this up, and your comment reminded me that it is people like you who I am hoping to reach. Hey, I'm opening up Calendly slots for a few days to meet with people, learn about what has been challenging around finding good, progressive healthcare, and offer some medical observations if they'd like. If this interests you, track me down on Facebook. Cheers and be well.

I just bought some today because of your video. I was hoping this would help me with a bit of constipation from iron supplements. Thank you so so much.
You are so welcome. I'd add some magnesium citrate-- 3-4 capsules daily unless you have kidney issues, and that will get things moving. LMK!
Thanks for this great video, just started using psyllium, so its great to know the benefits.
I am glad I could help you. Single most important "supplement" IMO.
@@ScottResnickMD Yes it is; for the first time in my life I am actually seeing the scale go down. Hell yeah, this is better than ozempic!
I add a teaspoon or two to my daily protein powder smoothie or sometimes add it to my low carb pancake batter and have been very regular daily now and sometimes twice a day too. I did not know about the other benefits but good to know there are other benefits too. Thanks.
Indeed! Almost my identical regimen-- added to a spot of pineapple juice, water and protein powder-- ideally after working out. And yes, so many benefits!!
Thanks Scott, I've been using it for a year. As for the dosage, it varies depending on the quality of the product. I was using 10 grams daily. But I found that it works. But it wasn't complete. Now, after I saw your video, I realized I needed to go up to two tablespoons.
Glad I could help. I like that you're tunig in to your body and its needs. I need about 10 grams daily, and then I'm great! Cheers.
Thanks for this information, I just bought Psyllium Husk today and that I will be adding to my daily smoothie. I am working on getting a better gut health and decrease inflammation due to being diagnose with Ulcerative Colitis 15 years ago. It was under control for 10 years taking Salofalk but last 5 years have been difficult. Anyway, will adding this supplement to diet/smoothie along with my intermittent fasting during the week. Cheers
Strong work, Anthony. This is about the least expensive, easiest and safest way to help your gut biome. Just be sure to "start low and go slow". That way you will avoid the bloating that some people get out of the gates.
Just remember to consume plenty of water!!
Dr. Resnick. Thank you for being who you are, you obviously care. I am a retired airline Capt. flew international routes for years. My digestion got compromised in the process. I have found psyllium to be my answer. I am up into higher dosage, 1 1/2 to two table spoons a day. It has regulated my BMs. It is pleasure to see a MD validate a "Home Remedy". It works.
A note of importance however.
There is a lab that tests nutritional products, I do not know if I am allowed to mention names. They found that most psyllium products are exceeding the allowable amounts of lead. There were a couple of products that passed, most did not do well.
If it is OK to name the lab and products, plz let me know, I'd like to pass the info. Thank You Scott.
I appreciate the comment, and am glad to hear that this helped you. I was not aware of the lead in psyllium but I'm not surprised as it is such a global product, and really who knows where it was grown, and the quality of the air and water that the plant was exposed to. I'd love to know what lab you are referring to. I'm sure you can mention it here. But yes, that would be a concern if the exposure got high.
I have NEVER tried this before, shall see where it goes !
Good luck! It's easy, safe and inexpensive.
Best explanation! How many times a day do you recommend? Thanks!
Once daily. It's my after-workout drink. It makes such a big difference in my bowel habits and patterns. Let me know how you do.
How much do you think it can lower cholesterol? In percentage terms? Fibre is supposed to remove cholesterol but how much, roughly, can two desertspoonfuls remove? Thank you in advance. Betsy.
Thank u doctor, one tip i can give please make your video’s short and to the point as dr berg does, i appreciate your kindness and hope to see more of you in the future !
Hamid, thanks. I am gearing up to make more, and am planning on making them shorter and more ot the point. See you there! Thanks for the input.
Is this good for hemorrhoids not caused my constipation? Any other suggestions for healing hemorrhoids naturally? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I would have to say yes. But first, let me pass along my best wishes for a challenging problem. Nothing to lose, that's for sure! I'd give it 4-6 months. Inexpensive. Easy. And at very least there are all of the other health benefits.
Great video!! Is there such thing as “bad” psyllium? The one I get is an Indian brand called “sat-isabgol” very cheap from my local Indian grocery story (~$3-4)
I'd look for organic if possible. It is a big commercial product, and I am sure that vast fields are being sprayed with pesticides around the world.
I started using a tablespoon of psyllium mixed with orange juice 2 to 3 times a day. and I started to remove old rubberized waste that was stuck in me from years of constipation I did this for about 6 weeks and I eliminated this every day
That's great!
Lovely!!
Hi Dr Resnick, I have found your video very informative and coincidentally I have just started my journey with psyllium husk powder for weight loss as well as lowering my cholesterol. What I have started doing is I have a tablespoon of psyllium husk powder two cups of water in the morning before I go to work. It's been working pretty good for me so far. My bowel movements are definitely easier. I suffer from high blood pressure and I am on enalipril and hydro microthiazide. The psyllium husk has not interacted with my medications as I take my water pill at about 10:30 when I'm at work and my blood pressure pill at 9:00 p.m. in the evening. I drink lots of water during the day so it's been beneficial. What I'd like to know is can I take another tablespoon of psyllium husk powder after lunch?
Yes! Sounds like you are doing great, and smart to divide the dose around your hypertensive meds. For sure take more, and reap more benefits. it also helps with satiety, and if taken before lunch can help you to eat a bit less. Cheers!
So is 2 tablespoons the maximum amount to have? I easily take 2 tablespoons. I am wondering if I can take more safely. I’m planning on doing it on fasting days.
No, but it's a good ampount that's well tolerated and will unlkely cause discomfort or bloating if you work up to it.
So if I have a psyllium husk drink before or after dinner, will it absorb some of protein or other nutrients? Could that be used as a strategy to stuff the junk food into psyllium gel to prevent calorie absorption, but still feel full?
That's a good question. I don't believe that we will lose any protein or essential nutrients with the use of psylliium. There's a reason that our gut has so much surface area. As human's tendency over time was to have less, as opposed to more food, we have needed to be efficient with nutrients. None to waste.
But regarding early satiety, there are some studies that psyllium's use before a meal does make one feel fuller sooner. And as a no-calorie supplement, that's good to lower our overall calorie intake.
So all the nutrients, still feeling sated, and all the microbial benefits. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Would a capsule form be ok? And if so, how many mg would be good to start with?
Capsules are OK. I just weighed out my typical daily dose (1-2 tbs) of psyllium and saw that it weighed... 8+ grams. So if you are taking capsules that would be, gulp, 16 of the 500 mg caps. And the expense of the caps outweighs the benefit as well IMHO.
Hi Doctor
I started getting pebble shaped stools after some food allergy. Can I start taking psyllium husk to improve bowels.
Thanks
I'd sure try it. It wont hurt. Hopefully you figured out the food that was affecting you and quit it. Most common culprits: eggs, dairy and gluten-- and ehatever you have eaten daily for years.. good luck!
Is there any downside to taking the phyllium in capsules rather than the power form?
Expense. Add up the milligrams. About 5-7 grams of the husk, which is what I typically use in about 1 tbs plus of the raw goods, would be 14 500 mg capsules. I've done the math. Whole foods, organic psyllium- a container will last you 3 months and costs $12
I bought this just now, i am constipated recently after failed ivf
First, my sympathies for the failed IVF. My (only) daughter is IVF and I am familiar with the emotional and physical challenges of the process. I'll send out a big, virtual hug. This will help you to get going again, and I'd probably add another 4-5 capsules of a good magnesium product. I like the Thorne Citramate. If you can't find it locally, my access code for Thorne is HCP 1042770. This will get things moving, I promise you.
Can I mix it with a sparkling flavored water beverage? e.g., Walmart's Clear American Cherry Limeade
Never tried it with sparkling waters. So I'd say yes.. and let me know how it goes.
I have a question Doctor I just bought “Now Psyllium Husk Caps” 700 mg , I was wondering when to take it since I have take my blood pressure medication around 30 min before breakfast , When will be the best time to take it since it’s two capsules per dose advised according to the suggested dosage in the back of the container
Smart question. I'd separate the psyllium from the hypertensive meds. I'd still recommend using the powdered form as it is much more economical and easier to get several-gram dosing.
Dr. Scott, I take probiotic supplement daily. When I added psyillium husk to my daily diet, should I stop taking probiotic or I can consume both probiotic and psyillium husk (with 2-3 hours in between) ? Thank you
I'd say you can consume both. In fact, the metabolites of fiber, known as short chain fatty acids, actually support the more healthful probiotic bacteria. Pretty cool! Just make sure you are spending your money on a good probiotic.
@@ScottResnickMD great then. Thank you so much for your reply
Thoughts on pill form ?
Thanks!🎉
Works great, but you have to take a lot of pills and it will cost you a bunch more than the non-pill form. I have had several patients who simply prefer the pills!
Hello and thank you for this video. I have purchased the psyllium husk today but wondering if it is safe to get it while i am on birth control pill and other hormonal medication. Thank you
Good question. Yes, it is safe to use on OCPs, however I would take them remotely from one another. There is a very small chance the psyllium could influence the absorption of the medication. So if you take your pill in the morning, (like when you brush your teeth- a common way not to forget), and use the psyllium in the afternoon, you'll be fine. Be well!

@@nuranajafarova4191 Very welcome. Be well.
@@nuranajafarova4191 You sre welcome. Be well.
Do you have any recommendations for supplements that can benefit people who have AFIB
Luis, Funny you should ask, as I have a close friend who is dealing with this. There are so many factors that can contribute. Common factors are anemia and stress. But most men are not anemic. With women it is a different stroy as they can lose blood over time through their monthly menses. As for stress, there are so many stressors in today's world, COVID notwithstanding. Supplements: iron (if needed), and adaptogenic herbs (I like Rhodiola and have been using this myself for some time with great benefit. But be sure to geta good product, likeThorne.)
Sleep is a big issue, so if a person is not sleeping well, this can contribute to cardiac irritability. Valerian root may help some with sleeping, although the literature doesn't really support its use. Melatonin may help some, and magnesium.
Anatomic factors can precipitate AF, and can be diagnosed by an electrophysiologist-- a cardiologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of these abnormal electrical pathways.
Finally, I'd consider the use of magnesium. It is an ion that has the ability to "balance out" some of these electrical charges across the nerve membranes. But first, I'd measure. Be sure to have your doc (or find it on line) measure a Red Blood Cell magnesium NOT only serum. And I'd supplement to keep your level in the upper 50% of the range. You'll need to take more caps than you'd expect to raise the level. Our bodies really need magnesium. I think I have a video on that-- so check it out.
Hope that helps!
When’s the best time to take this so that it doesn’t interfere with nutrient absorption? If I take it with my ACV, will I still have the benefit of the vinegar?
Pamela, a good question. I would avoid taking it around any medicines with high consequences, like blood thinners or immune suppressing drugs. Theoretically it could potentially lower absorption of minerals like magnesium. It shouldn't influence ACV.
I personally use mine daily when I rehydrate after a workout in the afternoon. This gives me a window of time before dinner. Also if there's a time you snack daily and wish you didn't, this has been studied as a appetite suppressant, so you might get double duty here!
@@ScottResnickMD thanks so much! I have looked all over the place on the Internet for an answer to this. The closest I could get was not to take it with supplements or medication. This was very helpful.
How does the use of Psyillium (husks or powder) affect lowering of our LDL and the use of statin drugs? I’m a 57 year old male T2D w/ a 5.5 - 6% A1c (uncontrolled, w/ no medications currently scripted) maintained with the Ketogenic diet, exercise and intermittent fasting I’ve had three (3) stants implanted after suffering an MI at the gym of all places. I’m just really curious how I can make absolute sure that there’s absolutely no possibility of the Stants becoming blocked again. Will the short chain fatty acids (SCT’s) help to keep healthy blood flow and lower HbA1C as well as aid in ketone production and the other healthy benefits. Thanks Doc for taking the time to educate and inform! This goes far beyond the “Standard of Care” we generally receive these days! Thanks 🙏
Yes, in a nutshell, you are corerct. The short chain fats help to positively program our immune system across the dendritic cells in the gut. This lowers inflammation. Oxidized lipids (AKA lipid peroxides, AKA inflamed lipids) are the real culprit as they promote all of the downstream inflammatory effects. These include the ICAM molecules which make our vessels more sticky, and the production of calcium beneath the liniing of the blood vessels. You know this as atherosclerosis. Keeping stents patent is a multipronged approach. Don't think the SCFAs influence ketone production, at least not directly.
Brilliant question and answer. Thank you both.
Would this help in getting rid of your mucoid plaque?
Not sure I know exactly what this is, but I do believe that the fiber almost works like a mini-abrasive, scraping off potential badness from the lining of the gut-- and supplying all the goodness to balance the bacteria and support the immune cells.
FYI- Nutritionist Rheo H. Blair, who was the actual brain behind the nutritional programs for about half of the bodybuilding champions from around 1952-1980, had a psyllium product called Softone. The ingredients stated it was "pure blond psyllium husks". He had the guys use it because his high protein high fat diet did not contain much fiber. BTW- a lot of those guys, notably Larry Scott and Frank Zane were using Blair's program while doing endorsements for Joe Weider's products. Anyway, Blair recommended psyllium for anyone on his program, which was similar to Atkins.
Soooo much data to support the benefits of fiber in the human gut. In some sense, a "paleo" style diet, with plenty of veggies and psyllium, may be the "cat's meow".
The planet cannot cope with so many meat eaters. It's super selfish to be too meat-greedy.
Thank you for the video on this topic. Couple of questions
1. Will taking 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk interfere with fasting when taken in the fasting window ?
2. Will bowel movement become dependent on this, if we take it daily ? Thanks !
I don't think that it would constitute breaking a fast. It has no calories as we can't digest it. also, it oculd help to give a feeling of satiety- fullness- that might help.
Greatttt questions!
The only way you would become dependent on it is the same way as if you are a bowl of lentils everyday for good bowel movements and then suddenly stopped them. If that makes sense. It’s just fiber .
Can thyroid people can take this to reduce weight
I've been using psyllium for years during water fasts. I can confirm that because psyllium is not a food but pure fibre it does not stop a fast. In fact it's one of the best things to take during a fast as it helps to clear out the toxins that accumulate in your'e intestines during a fast.
Remember to check the ingredients 😊 some manufacturers use rice flour instead of pure psyllium husk.
I didn't know that! Thanks for adding this information. I only use the WholeFoods brand that only says psyllium husk on the label.
What about other fibers? Inulin, methylcellulose, etc.? Also how do you split up your doses throughout the day? Is there a time of day which is NOT appropriate to take psyllium? What could I add to plain psyllium drink to improve the taste a bit? Thanks!
GMT, that's a good question. All of these are indigestible fibers (to us), but can be "digested" by different bacteria in our gut. I dose after my runs or workouts in the afternoon. I'm horrible at drinking water, and this forces me to rehydrate at least 12-16 oz. As for time, your call-- but fiber has been studied to suppress appetite a bit, so for patients who are wanting to shed a few pounds, I recommend using it when they tend to snack.
@@ScottResnickMD Thanks!
Are capsules as effective?
Yes, but they tend to be more expensive and you have to take a lot of them.
Thanks for the video I had a bad experience with it but now I realized it’s because I overdosed and Omg i had chills, sweat and almost felt like throwing up and of course bowel movement.
Thanks for the video
For sure, Patty! My mantra is to start low, and go slow. Hope you're doing better now!
I have a question 🤔
Would it cause problems with beneficial bacteria becoming less?
No, if fact, this will in fact help to support the more beneficial bacteria.
@@ScottResnickMD thank you for the response Doctor. 🙂
What about glucomannan? Helpful too?
I think it may be. Thanks for making this observation!
If I use psyllium in my Almond flour daily bread, will it be useful for weightloss? Also, I am a longtime vegetarian, (I do eat dairy), does psyllium have any added benefits to the vegetarian diet? Thank you ☮❤🕉
You, know, Sharon, that's a good question. I'd surmise that your vegetarian diet fares better than a meat-eater who consumes psyllium. I bet there's some advantage to the microbes that come with the soil. So I'd say if you are having two smooth poops a day, you're doing well.
Doctor, thank you. Great advice. Can I use 1 TABLESPOON of psyllium husk POWDER (not merely the husk version) before each meal or is that too much? If so, what do you suggest? I am 260lbs & would like to lose 60 lbs. This is my main reason for getting onboard. Thank you for your input.

Such good advice.
Since you have a long experience with psyllium husk it seems you would explain how you use or consume it.
Dennis, look through this thread. I am sure that I have outlined this several times in the past!
Hi Dr May I know what is the safe dose and when do I consume before or after breakfast…. More details on consumption please
Lynda, If using plain psylllium husk, I'll use 1-2 tbs daily. This is totally safe, and represents probably 8-12 grams of fiber. Some people can feel a little bloated when they start, so I'll recommend 'start low and go slow." Bottom line, all the new data is showing that increasd fiber helps the gut biome, which helps the brain, the heart, the belly, the immune system.... No toxic dose to my knowledge.
Feels like 8 - 12 lbs of fibre rn, not grams. 😅
Can this help in diverticulitis?
Angelo, sorry to hear that you're struggling with diverticulitis, if you're writing about yourself. I think that psyllium may help. The benefit would likely come through the way that the breakdown products, namely butyrate, modulate the immune system. I looked for studies regarding this but coouldn't find any good ones. But I can say if I was struggling with diverticulitis, andfrom what I know of the science, I would personally use it . But be sure to start low, and go really slowly as you advance the dosing. Good luck!
How do you feel about Meta mucil? I've been taking it for 10 years!
Hi. I personally don't use it, but believe it is better than not using fiber at all. I don't like the fact that it is processed, colored, flavored. I like the plain stuff from Whole Foods.

Any time. First, I avoid the jelly at all costs! So I shake it well and pound it down. Next, I like to use it after my workouts with a little protein powder. I love the taste, and it reminds me to hydrate regularly. Finally, if there's a time when you find yourself eating unnecessarily or excessivelyt during the day-- maybe it's mid morning before lunch-- try it then. Mix in liquid and drink immediately. 👌
Whoah, such differennt advice here in the uk on the packet. It says: mix it with a glass of warm water and wait 20 mins. I mix it with hot water (recently boiled) and wait 10 mins. If you did not allow it to swell in this way, it would surely sequester/leech fluid from the rest of your gut and you would get super thirsty. You'd feel like you swallowed liqid cement!? I find i have zero side effects and also that it helps the gut if is chewed first; surround it with saliva?
Hi…What’s your opinion about this helping IBS-D?
I believe that it can help. However I always recommend that for people with IBS, C or D, that they start more slowly, and ramp up slowly over time. Give it a try, and let me know how you do. It's safe, and is an absolute fundamental part of a healthy gut!
@@ScottResnickMD Thank you. I have some arriving from Amazon today. I definitely have to start low and slow. My system is highly sensitive to all medications and supplements of any kind.
To reiterate, "start low and go slow". You'll do great!
@@ScottResnickMD I’m pretty sure it worked quite well, producing number 4’s on the stool chart😅
LMK how you do! But perhaps reframe: this isn't a medicine or supplement but a something that comes in every food we eat. based on my understanding of the gut-immune-brain system, this will help you in time. Be well!
I was going to ask for ways that you incorporate your psyllium husk powder in your daily calories.
Here's my recipe. I start with about 2 ounces of pineapple juice. I add another 6 ounces of water, a scoop of protein powder and then lastly the fiber into a Bell jar. Shake it well and drink quickly, as the psyllium can tend to get clumpy if you wait too long. This is my post-workout drink, and I look forward to it.
@@ScottResnickMD thanks for the idea I've heard of using orange juice pineapple juice is another great option how much of the powder do you add. I know you use between one and two tablespoons a day; do you just add a teaspoon to that 2 oz or how do you end up getting 1-2 TBLS?
@Melissa Conway HI Melissa! I use about 2 oz juice and another 6 of water. I then add about a half-scoop of a vegetable-based protein powder I'm using- vanilla- and the psyllium. I use about 2 TBS of the raw psyllium husk daily, but I'd start with one teaspoon daily and work up as tolerated over time. Over time I can almost guarantee you will lose some belly fat and normalize bowel function. Cheers!
I make pudding every day - 1 tbs psyllium, 1 tbs chia and almond milk. I put vegan protein sometimes vanilla sometimes cocoa and some of flavoring drops. It is delicious healthy dessert.
Yes I’m going to be taking this every day I only took it one time and it helped me tremendously I always make sure I drink plenty of water it helps you have a better bowel movement and use less toilet paper🤣💕👍
I never considered the economic benefits of using psyllium! 😅 Glad you're doing well.
So true 😅
Can I take psyllium husk daily??is it safe to take daily??or I need to stop??
I recommend taking it daily. I try to.
Hey Scott, thanks for the vid, one of the better and clearer ones out there for Psyllium. I just got that same can from whole foods, the serving size on the back suggests 2 tbl spoons, in your vid you suggest that you take a high dosage 1.5 - 2 and recommend starting smaller and moving up. I just took 2 tbl spoons, I have been experiencing very strong stomach pains, after almost every meal...and the Psyllium completely dissolved the pain. I am convinced I have leaky gut and I am on the protocol, lectin free, probiotics, etc...
My question is, can Psyllium be overdosed? If I start my day early with 2 tbl Psyllium, have some lemon and ACV, go about my day...Is it possible to have psyllium later on through out the day, or is 2 tbl the daily max? Especially if I start to feel discomfort, could I take more?
This is not a longterm strategy, but my biome is without question out of whack, and I need to really "plug the leak" so to speak, some days I can't leave the house because of the pain. It's getting better, as I removed the lectins, but I still get diarrhea here and there, and also in a "lectin free" meal...I sometimes still experience indigestion, gas, irritability. I follow Dr Gundry, just following my "gut" he seems to be spearheading Gut health, and it's only been 5 days on his protocol, but I could use some help cause I still get bedridden from having a mystery ingredient in a meal which I didn't know would spark the sensitivity.
Psyllium has been the first thing to offer relief, so I'm very intrigued and would like to take it responsibly.
Thanks for any help you can offer ( I asked alot in here, please don't feel you need to answer everything, I'm mainly inquiring about the psyllium)
Wow, you made my day to hear that it helped. I don't know if there is a max, but I sure haven't seen any research that would seggest that one can overdose.
Basically, we have moved from consuming primarily large amounts of "gathered" food to large amounts of processed and high-carb foods. And our biome has suffered. Andit has suffered big-time, with a diminution of the health bacteria, and an increase of the thess healthy ones.
I have never needed to go beyond 2 tbs daily. That's whatworks for me. It's been at least 10 yeas, and when my gut starts feeling a bit "wonky" I often look back and recall that I may have been a little remiss in staying on my dosing.
One of my "top 4" supplements, for sure. Along with Magnesium, Vitamin D and Omega 3 fats. Cheers!
@@ScottResnickMD excellent, this is very helpful. I am taking the other 3 supplements that you mentioned, there’s so many varieties of magnesium and vitamin D forms, what are your thoughts on the preferred ones.
@@NoamBA82 For vitamin D, I personally use about 5000 iu daily when I remember. I have measured this vitamin (hormone) in patients thousands of time and have never seen a toxic level. Magnesium is a bit more tricky, as the dosage of most supplements on the bottle represents the magnesium plus the salt. So a 500 mg tablet of Mag citrate is really about 100 mg magnesium, and 400 mg citrate. When I get it together to make another video, I shoud do one on how to dose magnesium, and recommended forms. Different salts may have different effects on the body. Citrate, for example. mag citrate is one of the formulations used for a colonoscopy bowel prep cause it makes you...go. So not my favorite if I am really trying to push a patient's magnesium level. I like the Malate, taurate and for eneric use, oxide salts.
@@ScottResnickMD Is vitamin D3 okay to take?
Thanks for the video! I generally have 1tbs twice a day (each with a bout a pint of water) without issue. I wonder though, is there any risk to consuming like 6tbs/day or more? Other than potential regular side effects and some extra visits to the restroom. Just considering as a short term "cleanse" or maybe as an appetite suppression boost when starting a calorie restricted diet. I understand any opinions wouldn't be medical advice but I'm curious about your thoughts.
That's a good question. You are already at 4 Tbs daily, so I'd say titrate up. That probably already pushing 20 gms of fiber. If you are getting dietary fiber in your food as well, I bet you are getting plenty.
I used it one time , I will try it to lose weight.
I used it in keto burger buns I didn't like the taste.
But drinking it would work better.
What, like a colon cleanse?
Hi Dr when's the best time to take it?
Hi, Ira. Personally I like a shake after running, with a touch of pineapple juice, water and a little protein powder. Some people use it before a "snack time" to suppress appetite. It really doesn't matter.
I take it before food so i eat less, feel more full for longer and give it something to chew on.
But bloating is bad does it go away after multiple uses
Kimberly, keep the faith! I'd recommend cutting the dose significantly to where the bloating stops, and then resume low and slow.
I eat two meals a day, and I follow each one with 2 tbsp, and things are great
I am so glad to hear that. Yes, the diverse effects are pretty remarkable. Not the least of which is a consistent bowel pattern.
@@ScottResnickMD Still waiting for the weight loss, I have come to the conclusion that excess weight consists 100% of toxins.
1. With the standard processed American diet, we overwhelm our livers with toxins. Those toxins are blended with the average environmental toxins, and force our livers to store those toxins close to it for future processing, until we pile more onto the liver, causing it to store even more, adding mass to our gut and butt.
2. The processed food has very little if any roughage, causing our bowels to become less efficient when it comes to eliminating waste. This leads to toxins from our waste sitting too long in the colon, and leeching into our bloodstream, and being reprocessed by the liver, and stored in the gut and butt.
3. The liver would store a lower volume of toxins in our gut and butt if we were pushing the waste through, stopping the leeching, and sending signals to the liver to push out more toxins.
4. This is why healthy diets are always promoted, because the toxins are greatly reduced, and why exercise is promoted because sweat is nothing more than a toxic soup. Healthy diets include lots of fiber which promotes a more active colon.
5. A semi-healthy diet with a solid psyllium regimen will ultimately lead to weight loss, and exercise further accelerates the process. Psyllium attracts toxins and pulls them out of the body. The body is a machine, the more waste that can be eliminated, the harder the liver will work to eliminate it, as long as "all clear" signals are being sent to the liver, telling it that it is safe to flood the colon with more waste.
Is it okay to consume psyllium every day as part of a healthy lifestyle and weight maintenance?
Because there are places on the internet that state that it is forbidden to consume psyllium for more than 7 days and I am confused... I don't know...
I put 20 grams of baked psyllium on 5 rolls that I get... the question is if it is normal to consume 2 such rolls every day?
Or are rolls with psyllium not allowed every day?
Or is it forbidden to consume psyllium for more than 7 days as stated on the internet?
Really confused.. because it is written that it is a laxative and it is forbidden for more than 7 days, it damages the intestines.. I would appreciate an answer..
I have used psyllium, initially recommend to me by a med school surgeon buddy, for about 25 years. I almost uuse it daily. Hope that answers your question!
@@ScottResnickMD
Ok thanks for the answer.
I just checked on the internet.. some write that it is not allowed for more than 7 days. Can cause deficiencies or interact with medications. On the other hand, it really satisfies me that I make 5 lentil bread with 20 grams of psyllium and consume 1-2 bread a day. And it's really satisfying .. you say there is no problem consuming 10-15 grams of psyllium per day that comes through baked goods ..
And it's also a great substitute for gluten. Because I have a non-Cialic gluten sensitivity but it really makes me bloated
Thank for your video! Hi, doc. Can you please help me. Why is my belly boating since I consume psyillium husk? Am I taking too much dose? (1 1/2 tea spoon morning and before going to bed). Should I reduce the intake? What is your recommendation? Having bloated belly everyday is not a pleasant experience.
PS. New to this. Started to consume psyillium husk for 2 weeks. (It said raw psyillium husk, not powder). It tastes quite granulated though
I really hope you will reply my concerns. Thank you
Yes. You are right on. I tell people to start low and go slow. Bloating is common for new starts. So dial it back, start at 1 tsp until it is well tolerated and dial it up slowly. Good luck!
You should specify whether your dosage pertains to psyllium husk or powder. The difference in dosage is big between the two.
Joe, that's an excellent comment. I am referring to the husk here. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be sure to clarify in future videos.
Is it true that it contains lead ?
That's a good question. I guess if it was grown in contaminated soils, it could potentially contain lead, or if it was watered with leaded well water. I try to use organic everything when possible, including psyllium for the additional $2 per container. But that's a good thought!
I'm a question that might be stupid. If you use the husk regularly will you be able to have bowel movements naturally if you stop or will you start to have trouble with that? I'm going to start using the husk to Aid in weight loss. So my main benefit in buying it was to feel Fuller
Good question. I find that when I stop I notice a difference. So I take it as a reminder, and start up again.
Is there a best time of day to take it? Morning, afternoon, night?
I like taking my psyllium with some protein powder after a workout, which forme is usually late afternoon. But anytime is good. It helps with satiety, so if there's a time of day or night when you tend to needlessly graze, this will help you to feel more sated.
1 teaspoon three times a day. Take 30 mins before meals.
Thank you for the video. I have a question. Would I be able to use psyllium powder instead of husks?
Absolutely!
I took this and now I am serious constipated what to do now pls help
Carmen, sorry to hear that. I can honestly say that this is uncommon. I'd recommend lots of water intake. Recall psyllium is used commercially as a food "thickener." So stop using, for sure, and hydrate. I wish you the best. No harm done.
It’s probably that first layer of poop is really hard from sitting in the colon for so long .. drink some
Hot tea .. I use kelvita probiotic and go instantly
Commenting for other's benefit. This happened to me too. I just drank 2-3 glasses of water when it happened and that did the trick.
I've been diagnosed with IBS-C, and yes, my first few days of taking psyllium I was even more constipated than usual. I just kept on the water and after about a week of use things started moving really well. Grateful for this product, it's a serious savior. 🙏
Do you see the hummingbird?
Ha, I didn't! Good eye. No psyllium there, pure sucrose!
Do you take the psyllium after eating or before please ?
Excellent question. I take mine daily after my workout as this is when I remember to do so, and it forces me to drink a big glass of water.
If someone is wanting to lose a bit of weight, I recommend taking it before meals, for sure. It has been studied to promote some satiety-- meaning that when we fill our bellies a bit with the calorie-free psyllium, we tend to eat less. Hope that helps!
@@ScottResnickMD Thank you 🙂
I started my wife with 1 tsp a day with her protein shake with proboitics. Im trying to help her to loose weight. Can she loose weight by drinking psyllium husk with her shake once a day?
Primo, I'd have to say absolutely. At least, there's no safer supplement to use period. I used this for weight loss with my patients, and have seen some women lose 5 pounds in a few weeks. Start low, and go slow as you are doing. Shoot for a tbs daily by two weeks. Send me a note in a few weeks and let me know how she does. Also, is it is taken before meals, it can induce some satiety (se we eat less). I'm off to take my daily fiber now. Thanks for the reminder!

Right? When I stay on my 2-3 tbs a day, and drink plenty of water, I can practically set my watch by the timing of my poops. I eat a pretty vetable heavy diet, so that helps for sure as well. So good.

Azteca, psyllium will help. Start low and go slow with dosing. I like use about 2 TBS daily; I'd start with a teaspoon in some juice daily, shake it up and gobble it down. You can work up from thereI have seen patients lose a bit of weight, and belly circumference, with just this. You might add a few capsules of magnesium citrate daily, which should help to clean things out. Godd luck!!
Can my 4 year old kid take this too?
Absolutely. I'd recommend smaller doses, and good luck getting him/her to use it. I"d probably stick between 1-2 tsp a day. And here's what's cool. You may be decreasing your child's risk of later stuff like obesity and autoimnunity. Never seen a study on that, but 'd bet a dollar, for sure.
What do you mix it with because it turns everything into repulsive slime.
I agree! I mix about 2 oz pineapple juice, 8 oz cold water, stir it in quickly and gulp it down before it becomes yukky.
TBS means TABEL SPOON or TEA SPOON....?
Tbs is tablespoon, teaspoon is tsp
I am very careful to read the instruction for Psyllium husk; the instructions say: 1 TEASPOON per meal or three times a day; That is it. And, it works great for weight loss. And, I drink enough water a good 8 oz;
Sounds good. I recommend similar dosages, only it is easier for me to do it at once. Glad to hear it helps you.
Thx doc
