  • This is my sixth year up here in the mountains and I've learned to manage my circumstances during th hot summers. Balancing activities and following the movement of the sun and the heat of the day have made my summers a lot more productive and less difficult than in the past.

    You're not alone, lady. Our AC broke deades ago and we just never bothered to replace it. We do pretty much what you do but use smaller appliances, like an air fryer, and a toaster oven, instead of the big oven. It gets hot and humid for a few months where we live but it's manageable.

      @m.y.o.b.724 I totally get it. I also have quite a few small appliances. I didn't have a stove here for years so I had to figure it out with the small appliances which I still use. Strangely enough, knowing how to manage in the heat and cold without power is a good skill and a practice.

    Back in the Depression, I guess they took a clean sheet and wet it down and hung in a doorway so the breeze and the moisture created evaporative cooling. I might have to try that if my central AC ever quits! Rt now, I keep it between 75-80*F on those really hot days...it's enough to keep me very comfortable between that and one oscillating fan. Oh and I keep my dog shaved super short in summer and put a frozen Gatorade bottle (small sz) in her water dish to keep it cold.

      I love everything you are doing, especially for your dog. The wet sheet in the doorway is brilliant.

      @@MyMountainHomeandKitchen Thx! I got the idea about the Gatorade bottle from a friend who puts a frozen bottle in her rabbit cages. The rabbit plays with it and lays down next to it to keep cool. Just have to make sure the label is taken off or the rabbit will eat it...The Gatorade bottles are thicker than the average water bottle so they last longer too. Thx so much for the video-always looking for new ideas!

      Hi Annalee: you have been on my mind! I was just in SoCal this last week. But closer to the coast so it was around 75-80. 105 is awful. Anything over 90 is ridiculous and over 100 is pure insanity. Hugs to you and the family ❤

      I know you do! We are definitely on the same page with most everything. Same situation in winter, just working with the sun and whichever rooms retain heat the best.

    good morning! sounds like a good plan. i run fans in 3 areas and have ceiling fans. the little portable ac unit i purchased helps here but it's a new addition. not looking forward to our mid (our electric co) bill arriving. the delta breezes help out a lot but they are usually late in the day. it's going to hot hot hot here next week. i hope you get some cooling breezes as they really are a blessing. have a good day

      We;ll, good morning. Got up a 4:30 am and just finished my morning Costco mocha cappuccino. Have all the doors open and am hoping to get a head start on a hot day here. The portable AC unit sounds like a good idea. I'll be going to Walmart this evening and might look for one. Yes, we have a hard week coming with the heat.

    Oh my goodness. No AC!? I can’t even imagine. Although we just have window units and when it reaches 106 or higher the house usually miserable. Like 88-90 degree’s. Do you ever look to see how hot your house is inside? After the sun goes down it does seem to cool down fairly fast. But I’m dreading next week. Our ac units just can’t keep up when it’s that hot.

      Right now at 9 am Sunday morning it is about 80 and going up. We did go down last night into the 50's which is so helpful, I sleep better and the house cools down. But the rest of the day - challenging. We had those 120 degree days two years ago and that was crazy

    I turn my air conditioning window unit on when it gets about 88 in my living room i don't have air conditioning in the rest of the house it will kind of cool the front of the house and that's it. I think if you get used to your body stand a little hotter It's Okay, but if you're in air conditioning all the time and then you get hot it's really hard.. I don't get out and do a lot of extra work in the other rooms of the house.. I do have ceiling fans are rotating fans the other rooms of the house that certainly helps.. You have some wonderful creative ways Tuesday cool!!

      @MyMountainHomeandKitchen  3 місяці тому

      If you can get at least one room cool in the summer (or one room warm in the winter), I think you are OK. I agree that our bodies start to accomodate. I was always so cold in the winter here for the first few years, not nearly as bad nowadays and we have had some really cold winters. This upcoming week is going to be a challenge for all of us. Evidently PGE might be turning off the power up here on Tuesday to bring down the fire danger. Hoping we all stay safe everywhere. BTW so good to talk to you today! Sorry I was a little hysterical - OMG what a week is coming up.

    I worry about you with not some type of cooling system in your home. Can you look into a portable air conditioner or a swamp cooler. I don't think it gets humid where you are, not like my area. A swamp cooler might be something to try. They have little mini ones.
    I just had my HVAC replaced. It took them four times to get it right! That was not a fun couple of months, lol. I do have two window units in my home in case of emergency. I keep backup fans in case my fans go down. There are always fans on, including ceiling. Summer is the time I do splurge on cooling my home. My husband has to work out in the heat. It is not his friend. He gets dehydrated quickly and kidney issues. A cool home is a must to keep him safe. Today's heat index in my area is 110 degrees with 70 dew point. That is tough. I took my dogs out around five a.m.. It was beautiful, windy and just lovely. Stood out there for five minutes and could feel the humidity ramping up. Took them out at eight for their playtime and the humidity was brutal.

      Thank you so much - I should look at Walmart, I guess I just don't feel I need one. I got a lot of work done this morning today, now in the middle of the day I'm doing quiet stuff. It seems to work out. If I had children here or people who were older or who were sick, I'd be a little more proactive about the cooling, but this seems to be working out. It cools off quite a bit at night here so I am able to cool the house down
