    The University of Michigan Marching Band was the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy and recognized as the top marching band in the nation by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. You can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so the school that wins it first is the most highly regarded, and that's the University of Michigan. lol
    It was John Philip Sousa himself that proclaimed that "The Victors", Michigan's famous fight song, was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was composed in 1898 by a University of Michigan student, Louis Elbel. "The Victors" was first performed publicly by Sousa's famous band with John Philip Sousa himself as conductor. So don't be jealous! We don't give a crap about other marching bands, because our band has the pedigree and accolades to back its superiority.

      Yes, the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, is considered the Heisman Trophy of band awards, and Michigan was the very 1st college marching band to be awarded the prestigious trophy. Also John Philip Sousa himself proclaimed that "The Victors" was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was also first performed publicly by Sousa & his famous band.

      I can definitely appreciate this as well, but being a band geek, I’m messed up. I was raised in a Purdue house and I dearly love the All-American marching band, but I am going to go to Ohio State which is not only TBDBITL but the best in the universe. But I appreciate this because my high school is in Notre Dame territory and has become the best combination of Notre Dame and Michigan ever... Blue and Gold.,.

      @@will5412 It was like a sucker punch in the gut just as you enter the ring for a fight. How could you prevent it? The cut move being signaled by the director, not the drumline or drum major, was put in place long ago. Even well-trained musicians make mistakes. Those that cut too soon clearly heard the drumline's error, at, :30. The emotional effect of the error can be heard in the crowd and seen in the band's performance in the remainder of the vid.

    The average person who is not in band would rarely notice the mess up in the beginning....I didn't until it was pointed out. For 95% of the fans it's about the fight song itself and the M formation moving across the field as the instruments boom. This sends chills through me everytime I watch this or witness it live. The march and fight song rule regardless of mess ups...and that is all that matters to most people who view this.

    I was in the MMB flag corps 75-77. I remember well the sweeps on Elbel Field until your feet were burning. Practicing the 212 beat per minute entry was a major rush. All worth it to hear the Maize and Blue faithful roar when we exited the tunnel, each weekend. I've seen countless marching and corps bands,overall the MMB is right up there with the best. I dig the changes the band has made. The lock step toward the north endzone is very impressive. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work!

The drum major at 1:30 is obviously trying to be better than all other drum majors by touching his head, however, he is falling on his head and knees more than anything else. At 2:30 they must think they are Wisconsin or something. They only made a letter M and marched back and forth a bunch. 1:56 WTF? They didnt sound good

    We don't play it twice, that's the way the song goes, it goes into an interlude and back into it for one more verse. When you have the best fight song in the land, why stray from it. Look up Temptation and the Hawaiian War Chant, we play those throughout the game as well. We have a sick tradition with Temptation.

    I love the band, but this must have been the first game of the season, because the band members up at the base of the "M" were unsure of when to move to form the quadruple lines. Cody Martin from Plano was superior in his performance. Overall, how could you not like it? Michigan and Auburn currently have the two most emotionally charged entrances for bands. This is unbiased as I am not an alumnus of either.

    Anyone who matters agrees with me..Your band is a good, top tier band .. However it doesn't sound any better, doesn't march any better and doesn't dress any better.. You blend in quite well.. It takes more than that.. There is a reason the FTAB has been requested by the President for parades in the capital, and were invited to march the streets of Dublin, Ireland.. There is a reason that NUMEROUS former members have had their ashes spread on the PRACTICE field.. Swallow that blue pride buddy..

  • @allpeeps4me

    Well unfortunately for you not only does this band have equal peers but is not even the class of the midwest, that goes to Norte Dame. Not to mention, this might hurt, Ohio state's band is more impressive than this. But if you want marching royalty you might consider having a look at The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band. Ask OSU's or Michigan's band director and they wont deny that the FTAB is superior. I enjoy Michigan's band and would have silently but I saw your comment and thought I'd enlighten you

    ok... sorry, but UW Wisconsin Madison's Marching band is MUCH better. The beginning was sloppy, and the just go back and forth in an 'M'. Not to difficult to follow someone when the ENTIRE band is doing it! Thew drum major isn't that great either, UW Madison's drum major kicks the butt out of this one. Also, everyone gets excited when they do like 3 measures of high stepping, Wisconsin's Band does ALL high stepping! LOL... this band is good, but they don't even compare to Wisconsin! lol

  • @xHaterofHatersx

    @Brett11996 but what i can't understand is the fact that the "little brother" thing gets coined, and coincidentally michigan hasn't beaten msu since then. but to those ignorant fans, our wins "shouldn't count" (direct quote from an idiot guy i know) because of 3 reasons:
    1. 3 years of rich rod
    2. 1 year where one msu player goes rogue, and suddenly our entire team "plays dirty"
    3. all time records
    and i doubt any other rivalry uses the same term, mike hart did coin it 4 years back, didn't he?

  • @lolbuster01

    You say everyone attends to watch the game, they you should have visited out team. More people were there to watch and DANCE with our band. How do I know? Almost everyone left at halftime and said good job to our band director. This year and last year we get e-mails from people who claimed they cried and were moved by our marching show. If you listen, you can even hear the crowd get quiet when Frank Starts singing.

  • @xHaterofHatersx
    @xHaterofHatersx 12 років тому

    @kruegertown89 both of you aren't worth my time... it was statistically an upset, but when one team is as overranked as michigan, (your coach said it himself), i hardly consider it an upset.
    all of your arguments really don't matter at all, because we have the most important statistic, the head to head on michigan.
    and our win over wisconsin may have been a fluke, but msu dominated the well over half the game, wisconsin had a late run to tie it, so we had to resort to a hail mary.

  • @camellane33
    @camellane33 13 років тому

    Both Moo U regular season losses were blow-outs unlike those for Michigan. lol Please, MSU got lucky. It's great to see their luck end. How did Moo U get Wisky at home 2 years in a row? That game should've been played in Madison & would've been a blow-out, & MSU's win on a deflected Hail, Mary pass in Lansing was a fluke. MSU was also lucky to play OSU without its suspended players. MSU was also lucky to have 2 weeks to prepare for Michigan at home. It was also lucky to escape Minn. at home.

  • @camellane33
    @camellane33 13 років тому

    @kruegertown89 The Moo U win over Ohio State was also a fluke. Moo U faced an undermanned OSU team lacking all of its suspended players, whereas Michigan beat an OSU team at full strength. Moo U nearly lost to Minnesota at home as well. When you consider the full body of work as all voters should, the 2 loss Michigan team is better than the 3 loss,15th ranked Moo U team. It was a very fair final BCS ranking. It should've been Mich, against Wisky in the title game as well, the 2 best B10 teams.

  • @kruegertown89
    @kruegertown89 13 років тому

    @xHaterofHatersx It was an upset! Even at the time the game was played, it was considered an upset, whereas the ND win over Moo U was so much of a blow out, that hardly anyone consider that game an upset. One game does not an entire season make. NO, just because you upset Michigan after having 2 weeks to prepare & the home advantage, doesn't mean you're good enough to beat Nebraska or Notre Dame. Moo U is clearly not ready for big time college football, & your win over Wisconsin was a fluke.

  • @xHaterofHatersx
    @xHaterofHatersx 13 років тому

    @pagliacci567 lol i'm not denying that msu had three losses, but that was after playing an extra game... a game the michigan wasn't prestigious enough to play. and the fact that you think that our "fluke" win over wisconsin should be disregarded is comical and not worthy of a response.
    next time, bring up an argument that i haven't heard 5 times and can't be debunked through a simple look at statistics beyond the record.

  • @anonymousowa1
    @anonymousowa1 13 років тому

    @killerbees312 I never generalized that almost everyone attends a football game to see the band. I said that in my school district there are some schools whose bands are the central attraction. Honestly, the attention span of some of you critical, highly hostile commenters would make a goldfish laugh. It may be beyond your comprehension, but yes, in some schools, the band's popularity is on par with the football team's, and sometimes even better.

  • @sorryimcortney
    @sorryimcortney 13 років тому

    @anonymousowa1 im still in high school. i'm only a sophomore and im not the only one who sees this. we play our show during every half time at every home football game and no one watches or applauds. we work harder than most of the sports teams and no one gives a damn. the football parents yell at us when we're on OUR SECTION of the stands when we play our pep tunes or stands music, whatever you wanna call it. trust me no one in our school cares.

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @MichiganFan39 Yes they do, and as a Michigan fan, I take pride in respecting my team's traditions as well as those of the other schools. I enjoy the sport so much more when I take the time to see the bigger picture. I think that the OSU and UM marching bands are both distinguished, so I can't possibly or intelligently deem one as better. I subscribe to the art of appreciating each band, as opposed to comparing them. It's about music and tradition, performance and precision. GO BLUE!

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @RebelFlagHoistedHigh My point has always been that UM and OSU are amongst many distinguished marching bands. I repeat MANY. To state one as superior is not only hard, but impossible. You even stated that yourself. If you are going to nickname your band TBDBITL, expect others to take issue. It is an ignorant statement because it arises from a subjective point of view. Not an educated one. All I was saying is that OSU was not the only gig in town when it came to marching bands.

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @Rockmangoes It's irrelevant mentioning how they "raised" the bar when the arbitrarily lowered that very same bar. As bad as going 1-9 is, having to relinquish a season's worth of victories is far worse. Losing to your greatest rival is not a crime, but violating the rules of conduct is. It has been said that "all glory is fleeting". While I don't know the outcome of this year's version of The Game, I can tell you that Michigan will not be the pushover it has been the last few years.

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @RebelFlagHoistedHigh More objectivity from Buckeye Nation. Fans of every college team think that their band is the best. I am sorry, but there is no such thing as the The Best Damn Band In The Land....It's pure subjectivity and nothing more. When one considers how many great, and I do mean great marching bands there are, it is arrogant and unfounded to deem any band as being superior to all. I can respect fanfare and pride, but not ignorance. Seems to be widespread in Buckeye Nation. GO BLUE!

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @Rockmangoes Wrong, wrong, wrong.....If you remember correctly, Lloyd Carr retired. He wasn't forced out due to lack of performance. He resigned because he felt it was in his best interest, as well as that of the program. What gets lost in the vitriol is how OSU and UM have each pushed one another to excel. What makes this rivalry so dynamic, is what has made these programs so great. The intense desire to achieve, and the indomitable will to win.

  • @AAndrews1968
    @AAndrews1968 13 років тому

    @sportcardcollector9 Why did you take the time to watch this video? The reason for your hatred of UM is quite simple. Certain OSU fans feel a sense of entitlement. As to why, who knows. Your animosity stems from the simple fact that historically, UM has has had the better of Ohio State. Woody Hayes had a losing record against UM, and you hate us for it. UM laid to waste many a Buckeye dream. I guess what they say is true. Envy begets hate, and this couldn't be more applicable than to Ohio State.

  • @ThoseWhoStayUofM
    @ThoseWhoStayUofM 13 років тому

    @smb333 "and the fact that you have no linguistic merit in your argument"
    I seriously lol'd. Are you trying to be ironic? Linguistic Merit?... in an argument? I'm sorry but your logic is so fundamentally flawed that it is self-defeating. You're done. My argument was that Michigan's band is not rated ever, so they can not possibly be overrated. Linguistics never even factor into the argument. My comment is entirely readable. Perhaps your reading comprehension needs work.

  • @ThoseWhoStayUofM
    @ThoseWhoStayUofM 13 років тому

    @smb333 "the general perception by the public is that they are one of the best in the country"
    Uh... firstly, nobody says that. Michigan isn't the one that is self-proclaimed TBDBITL. If anybody says that Michigan's band is the best in the country, it surely isn't Michigan saying it. If other people want to say it, then there is nothing the band or the school can do about it. But of course, Michigan is the arrogant ones right? How do I know they study? Because it's Michigan. That's how.

  • @smb333
    @smb333 13 років тому

    @ThoseWhoStayUofM@ lol..I did not mean "rated" as in the result of a competition, I just meant that the general perception by the public is that they are one of the best in the country, and they just aren't....and how do you know they all study??? Did you take a survey? It's a Big Ten University, of course they study...so do I....and the fact that you have no linguistic merit in your argument, (seriously, it's barely readable..), and that you called me retarded, discredits your entire comment...

    @KMW52 what? They kept something simple so OSU could do something more complex?? They didn't invent anything, they just did what big ten bands still so today. I guess you can keep clinging to that if you think it means Michigan's band is better. That really has no meaning, there is no metric. If you think prancing onto the field is somehow better than a band with military precision then good for you. BTW, no one can hear clarinets in a 110,000 seat stadium. All brass is so much better.

    @KMW52 Do you know what Script Ohio is??? It is not a standing diagonal spelling of Ohio in cursive. Home bands honor the opposing school by making their logo or school name while playing their fight song. That was all they did. That is not Script Ohio. Script Ohio is a ROUTINE, starting from the 'O' block, uncoiling, continuing with the drum major writing 'Ohio' and, of course, ending with the dotting of the 'i'. The Best Damn Band in the Land > the scUM marching band.

  • @KMW52
    @KMW52 13 років тому

    @xHaterofHatersx Yeah, it's true, Michigan did the script Ohio 1st. OSU came to the Big House without their band, being a 2nd rate university. So the Michigan Band, feeling sorry for them did the script Ohio. Ohio St., never able to come up with anything original, adopted the script Ohio pretending it is all their own. Their latest borrow from Michigan came when they started the ridiculous tradition of putting a "thee" before their name. More Wolverine envy complex! :D

    @nick5man5 1. There was a new director this year. 2. There were 110,000 screaming fans that made it a hell of a lot more difficult to hear the percussion cadence command. 3. There was probably some confusion within the percussion section. 4. This is probably the only time this has ever happened, and it has most certainly not happened since. 5. The rest of the pregame show went swimmingly. Just listen to those trombones at 2:33! Stellar.

    Just so everyone knows the history of Script Ohio, it is very simple. Yes, Michigan's Marching Band did perform it first, however, it is not the same as how The Ohio State Marching Band peforms it now. They did it diagonally across the field, in script, to the tune of Fight The Team. It looked similar to the common end to a Michigan field show where they spell "The End". Ohio State does script Ohio to the tune of Le Regiment. Ohio Sta"e created Script Ohio as it is known, Michigan simply spelled

    @GoHard1102 actually HBCUs come from University of michigan. this is the first college marching band america has ever seen back when college football got started. then after them came the greatest HBCU band that ever marched and that would be FAMU marching 100. all of the first band directors of an HBCU band graduated from this school because this was the only school at that time that had music as a major and a marching band as well

    As an Ohio State fan, I respect Michigan. I honestly don't see any reason for me to root against UM every single week because if Michigan wins, so does the Big Ten. I'm not saying I like Michigan (Well, I don't.) , but I defiently respect them and wish them the best in the coming year not only in football, but in other sports too. Defiently can't wait until the big showdown in football this year -- hopefully two top ten teams battleing it out for a BCS/National Champ. birth. Good luck to y'all!

    @RandomSpewBros: My high school band director was UM's drum major for three years in the late 70's. His first game against Northwestern, the field was soaked. When he broke through the block M, he slipped an slid fifteen yards. The crowd was laughinhg their as*es off. Even in the early 90's, he'd hear someone say at least five times each year they once saw UM's drum major once slide 15-20 on his ass.

    @tonybologna31 ha! way to change the subject! we suck right now, u can't be at the top forever, but we'll be back so enjoy ur 2 wins in a row. even then, we'll occasionally lose to msu. it happens, footbal is unpredictable, but the Michigan Marching Band will always be better, face it, it's basically because we have a great tradition nd msu doesn't, plain and simple.
    oh, we always sucked at basketball lol

    @mike0n0jake0inc Michigan was 3rd in scoring, last in turnovers and 7th in total yards per game. So you are completely wrong. Tressel packed it in and ran for 251 yards all over you guys. Who cares about brandon graham? who cares if the patriots draft him. Who cares about mel kiper or playing to the whistle? He did nothing against ohio state. Stop bringing up the NFL. it doesn't prove anything. Our pros are still better.

  • @Nugent4Heisman
    @Nugent4Heisman 14 років тому

    @mike0n0jake0inc actually the report i saw had OSU #2. but again irrelevant, our team is so stacked from the year before, you lose top recruits because they wont start for 2 years now. It's a 3 year cycle. 2 great years, then a mediocre year. It's that way with all top schools. You have to wait for the starters to all leave so that there can be a chance for a top recruit to play. Look at our roster. Our second team could beat Michigan tomorrow. really.

  • @Nugent4Heisman
    @Nugent4Heisman 14 років тому

    @mike0n0jake0inc apparently spelling is YOUR weakness. Buckeye fans respect what bo schembechler brought to the rivalry. Woody Hayes was a far greater coach but it was a sad day when he left UofM and died. You don't have enough respect to admit when your numbers and players can't compare anymore. Brag about most wins ever and I'll tell you that since 1919, we have more than you. We were miserable for 20 years. We know that

  • @Nugent4Heisman

    @mike0n0jake0inc ok? one person? Michigan produced 1. Henne is not the starter yet. You're talking about one player in Michigan's history. Name a good linebacker, safety, running back, wide reciever. Manningham? Edwards? Are you kidding me? You're talking about the NFL when its about college. Clarrett was thrown out of OSU for being an idiot. Tell me michigan's never had that happen...

    @PedroahTheDestroah you are right. they won the first sudler trophy which was picked by journalists. Ohio State won the first one picked by College Band directors. One person called it "one of the greatest marches". congrats. The michigan band is weak. heard em, seen em, even conducted them for a few concerts. nowhere near the quality of the other 2 thought their school of music is far superior. your football team is better than your band anymore..

    @dmyerz7: It makes me sad to see someone representing a Big Ten school bashing other schools in such an immature way. I know there's a rivalry, but seriously, we're not seven years old. Both Michigan and Ohio State have excellent band traditions. Both order their batons from the same manufacturer (as do some other schools). And the backbend without the hat still requires a lot of flexibility and control. Your comments are unnecessary.

    just in case osu fans didnt know this script ohio is a lie it was FIRST Performed by Michigan in the 1930's dnt believe me look it up i am so tired of hearing osu fans say how great script ohio is to be honest it takes forever and it's not all the interesting to look at unless your a tradition kind of person now i dnt want to hear ppl talk shit to me so beforee they call me a liar plz look it up

    ok i watched the michigan and the ohio state marchign band performances and i have to say that both of them are good BUT i have to give it to michigan cause there is actually energy the crowd and they are singing the fight song people are clapping and it's not a long and painful to watch with osu it's you know waiting five minutes just for it to finish and then dotting the i and it makes you want to say hurry up but both of them are very good

    Spats. . . capelets. . . hesitation steps. . . back-bending drum major. . .sigh. . . for decades, I've enjoyed the half-times of college games more than most of the games themselves. Few things stir the blood as does a strutting drum major/majorette, leaning backward upon the wind of his/her passage, prancing down the band divide while music shivers the very air. . .

    @Brett11996 i respectfully disagree. while there are the classy and respectful fans, if you were in the shoes of a born and raised msu fan, i think you would find that a shocking majority of the uofm fanbase carries at least an inkling of that false superior attitude, and the whole "little brother" thing proves it...

    and keep bringing up irrelevant non-conference notre dame who michigan could only beat because of the biggest fourth quarter meltdown of the entire year.

    @camellane33 exactly, they're glamorous, with their large fanbase and ridiculous amounts of money, but beyond that is a shitty football team reaping the rewards of the broken system that is the bcs. i'd rather have a good football team with no recognition than an overrated one with too much recognition, but that's just me :)
