I've been trying for weeks to figure out what this part is and how to replace it! Thank you so much for this informative video, I'll be able to use my tub again
This is brilliant. Wicked simple step-by-step, and detailed enough that I've got no questions or worries about getting it done for our tenants. Thank you!!
Incredibly helpful. Focused on the problem at hand - how to replace the Temptrol Diverter/Volume Control Lever Handle. Best I've found on YT. Pleasant/relaxed presentation style, explains every step, shows every step and was as brief as necessary. Thanks a lot! Three suggestions: (1) Change title to replacing the diverter valve Handle. You should have 1000 likes but some may be frustrated because you only cover the handle replacement (not the the entire valve replacement). (2) Consider adding plumbers putty or a similar sealant to the back top of the face plate before screwing it back in. That little bit of putty will keep water from dripping down the wall or from the shower head and potentially getting behind the face plate and into the wall. (3) The video starts out of focus and not centered, but the rest of it is perfect. That start may keep some viewers from watching the rest. Too bad because the rest of it was great!
I have the new tri star handle version of that so the cap is on the bottom so when I take the cap off there’s something else also do I take the hot and cold water off around The Who,e house in order to do this
very good instruction but I had a problem putting the cover back on while trying to line up the the diverter shaft. The clip holding it to the cover is getting in the way. I assume I'm doing something wrong but I also noticed there was no clip on the old diverter, which could be why it broke. Suggestions?
@@EricDIY Thanks for your quick response. I'm not sure I'm getting what all the way on the cover means. I tried both fitting it over the outer cover with the logo etc. and fitting it under outer cover and on the round flange of the inner The problem is the clip sticks out and against the cover to the cartridge over the spindle and I can't lever it the cover into position. There was no existing clip so I had no way to see how it should look.. At the moment I don't have any cover on at all but the diverter works with the clip in place. not sure what to try next. I probably need to replace the whole assembly since the diverter doesn't divert all the water no matter whether its letting water into the tub or shower.
I just looked at your video again and realized I put the cover over the spindle on before I tried to put the larger cover on first. That should make a real difference. I'll try it a little later when I have the time.
Try to spray some vinegar in there to get rid of calcium/buildup. Then try getting it out again. If not, spray some WD40 and try to grab onto it carefully with pliers and try pulling it out
If I ever have to replace the valve (which I did at my old house) I will be glad to post it as it is a pain if you don't know how to do it especially seeing that it takes a special tool to unseat it.
I would like to see how the actual diverter valve is replaced as it looks like it's part of the soldered unit. The gaskets are squeaky and freezing up with time.
You need to use them every now and then or else the rubber seals and washers dry out. You can put Vaseline in then when you install them to help with this.
Thanx Eric, but your video only replaces the diverter handle ... how does the plastic diverter come out to be lubricated? That would be a great vid. I use the shower daily and it's getting tighter and squeaker to divert from tub/shower settings, I'm afraid the plastic handle will snap soon.
@@karlellison5094 You would need to get the special tool (sell it in official parts stores) and tank it out. You can also use a screw in bolt and then pliers to pry it out. You would do better to replace it as you wear on some parts when taking it out with the special tool
What? ... are you from Hollywood where everything works magically? ... I've worked on a half dozen of these and the screw which you effortlessly removed NEVER comes out like that in real life! ... What's the magic secret???

My diverter valve going 180’ Does that mean it broke? It was kind of loose to begin with when I put in new trim.
Video is great and super helpful thank you. Best I’ve found

You can if you want. There might be a hot and cold shutoff near the shower right behind the supply pipes (usually behind a small door or in a closet)
Ok thank you 😊

The clip should go all the way on the cover before you put it back on.

Excellent demonstration. My only question is why didn't you clean up the pieces before re-installing them?
No need to
Thanks for the video.

Why did you have to replace that piece? Was the diverter leaking?
No, it was broken
Do you need to shut off the water in the home to replace this part?
No, if you were replacing the actual valve then yes
Did you have to turn off the water valve before replacing the diverter valve?
No
Eric DIY I’m doing one of these today. So as long as I leave the water in the off position I don’t have to shut off the water?
You don't have to...turn it off if it makes you feel better
Eric DIY did the repair this morning. Didn’t shut off the water. Worked out fine
Eric DIY thanks for the info
I can’t get the broken piece of the old diverter out of the hole
Try to spray some vinegar in there to get rid of calcium/buildup. Then try getting it out again. If not, spray some WD40 and try to grab onto it carefully with pliers and try pulling it out
Only the diverter valve handle was replaced, not the valve.

Is that the valve or the lever replacement.

You just changed handle, not valve.
This is not the diverter valve. That is the control arm
Please have a second person hold the camera as you work. The video shakes or loses focus.
Eric where can I buy that same switch you put in on the shower control? You said you paid $8 for I need one ! Hook me up !
Look at Ebay
If you want to pay retail Home Depot or Lowe's should have it
What do you call the switch part ?
Diverter handle
I just need that part cause it has a lot of play most likely worn out it’s the original one

There's no secret but I'm also in the Boston area.

Very helpful... thank you!
