I'm also a brown girl, and I've contemplated going red but would personally not risk the damage since I love having long hair. However, I do highlight my black hair to a dark brown - it brightens up my skin nicely and there's less damage. If you're unsure, you could always do something similar and see how you like it! Some people like making big changes at once, and others prefer baby steps. Nothing wrong with either option :)

I feel you except I'm not brown but I always felt much darker than I really was... I am half Greek half Austrian and have pretty dark hair but pale skin ( my mom always used to think that my skin is darker which it was compared to her skin because she is very very pale) and I always thought nothing else but brown and black would suit me.... Now I know that it's not the case... But going to a hairdresser and doing color as well is too expensive for me so. I stick to my natural color 😅🙈

I like this comment. I think it's so important. I'm 20 at the moment but it's so frustrating and damaging to constantly hear things like "anti-ageing", "she looks young for 30", "she looks older than she is"! It's almost exhausting even. Like just let humans be humans. We get old, we get wrinkles, yolo. Men are allowed to age but women are expected to look 25 until they die.

Sam Rao I agree with you. We definitely life in a world that profits off of making people feel insecure, and anti-aging products/procedures and even casual conversation play into that. It’s sad that we always give backhanded comments towards “older” people about “looking good for their age”. Just tell people they look pretty/beautiful/gorgeous/handsome/whatever other positive synonym and leave it at that, dammit!
H B I agree, and a lot of it unfortunately plays into the narrative that a woman’s best attribute is her looks, which is TOTAL BS. It’s sick IMO to make people feel insecure for aging just so you can profit when they want anti-aging creams or more invasive methods like plastic surgery. People should be allowed to age without feeling guilty.

Honestly , I've done it, i loved it and it looked amazing BUT the pigment is so hard to get rid off without damage, so I'm never doing that again! Also the roots will start showing so quickly you'll be sick of it
As someone with black hair (I love it, it’s so dark and beautiful), we do get bored of it at some point and want to add some flavor to it through color if not styling. I recently went for blonde highlights with a rusty hair color as an undertone. So my black is still there as the base, but with a pop and change. I love it 😍😍🥰 Also as a South Asian “brown girl” myself, we often feel like many hair colors won’t suit or go well with our complexion, so finding something flattering and it not looking bad is SO exciting. I feel like a new person.
And I did not go to my roots, just a bit away from my scalp to spare some protection for my hair.
