This is the best version of this song I've ever heard. Tom sounded great here. This is special and I'm glad it was recorded for us all to see all these years later.
RIP Tom Petty. I was there in the crowd. Bonnaroo 2006 was like living in another world; it was a very special moment in my life and I'll never forget it.
A buddy and I were lost trying to find our group with a head full of acid. I saw some random guy hitting a bowl, and walked up to him to ask if he could help us out. He called our friends and pointed us in the right direction. Everybody who was there in that moment in time has a story to tell.
This performance was incredible. I knew it was back in 2006, but now that I’m watching this video in 2022, I realize how truly incredible it was. We didn’t have smart phones back then so I’m glad I found this video. RIP Tom Petty
This has to be one of the greatest live performances ever. Just listen closely to his guitar… the musical arrangements etc, absolutely perfect, and then his vocals.
I attended Bonnaroo in 2006 and got to see this live. Looking back, I feel truly blessed to have experienced this magical performance before his passing. Awesome for Bonnaroo to have posted this here so we can enjoy it and appreciate the gift Tom Petty gave to the world with his music.
I was in a car accident in 2001 and my sister played this song next to my hospital bed. She said I was moving my feet to it which I don't remember because I was in a medically-induced coma. Every time I hear it I get choked up.
When you see almost the entire arc of someone's life and career and see all the joy they brought into our lives it can really break your heart. Thank you so much Tom. You will never be forgotten.
I remember being here and calling my mom to let her listen to this masterpiece. First concert i ever went to was TP for my 14th bday with my mom. Our bond was TP & HB. RIP mom. Hope ur hanging with dad and TP in the great beyond.
I was there. 70,000+ singing. good times. back when bonnaroo was fun. haven't been since 2008. have another lineup like 2006 and I would be back in a heart beat.
Tom Petty was such an amazing, talented musician! I don't know what it is about this particular performance of Tom singing "Learning To Fly," but the tears flowthe most whenever I watch this video from Bonaroo! Tom sings this poignant song so beautifully always! But there's something special about this performance. For me, it's partly because that large outdoor crowd is silent, hanging onto his every word, and witnessing his brilliant light. And as the song comes to the end, the tears really flow because, I know that none of us will ever witness that man and his stirring voice LiVE again! :-( So thankful for this video, and all the videos that exist for all of us to feel Tom's spirit through his music. We miss you and love you Tom. ♡
This version made me cry, about he part saying "looking down on the world below" thought of my mama who passed in 2011 :-( Mr Petty, thank you for a wonderful song, R.I.P
Had Sirius Tom Petty channel 31 on in my car as I finished parking it. Song came on. Kept radio on. Automatically eventually the tears again came. ................
Tom Freaking Petty wrote songs like this for all of us to enjoy for a million years, because God gets bored and shows off sometimes in creating people like him. Absolutely Evergreen! We miss him, but will never be without his genius.
If I had to pick my personal Mount Rushmore of great American songwriters, it would be, (in no particular order), Chuck Berry, Smoky Robinson, Bob Dylan and, my absolute favorite, Tom Petty. I have listened to his music, dissected his songwriting and admired him as a person my entire life. He wrote and sang songs about real people, real life and situations that we can all relate to, while never losing his wide eyed wonder at the joy of making a living playing in a rock ‘n’ roll band. Your contribution to my life is immeasurable and I will miss you for the rest of my days. Rest In Peace, Mr. Petty as you fly up over your troubles and over your worries and thank you for everything.
Well, maybe not Rushmore, but if there's an american who deserves a granite statue, it sure is Tom Petty. If there'll be people 500 years from now, I'm sure they'll want to know how the immortal poet looked like.
The live version of this song was the first thing I thought of when I heard of Petty's passing. Was no cooler moment than just staring at the stars and singing along to this. Thank You, Tom.
The best part of his concerts was when you got to sing Learning to Fly with him. It was literally electric in the arena...They were amazing to see live and probably the BEST live band out there.
I did it too at Hyde Park and it was simply awesome. It instantly became my new most favourite Petty song and his late live versions (and this one in particular) are just faultless and perfection personified ❤
His Passing has hit me harder than ever ! Last Friday would have been his 67th Birthday ! I count myself as very fortunate to have seen him 3 times ! The last time was in July in Hyde Park ! I had tickets to see U2 on the same day , but as soon as I knew Tom & Stevie were coming I sold the U2 tickets ! To be honest it was Stevie I wanted to see as I had never seen her solo ! But to see them on the same bill was incredible ! Since his death I have been on here watching his Concerts Videos & interviews . I expect he will now be Knocking on Heavens Door with some of his friends like George Harrison & Roy Orbison ! RIP Tom !
This song, and specifically this version from Bonnaroo live, became my anthem in 2016-17 when I was walking through the dark days of cancer. Still raw emotion to this day when I hear it. Beautiful, epic, and when the crowd begins, it sounds like a chorus of angels. Saw Tom at his final concert at Red Rocks May 30, 2017, and after all I had been through, when he played this song and the crowd chimed in, I cried my eyes out with gratitude. Tom was gone just 4 months later. RIP TP, and I know you finally learned the true meaning of learning to fly ❤
Somewhere in this chorus of 70,000 people at the 3:20 mark is my voice. RIP Tom. You got them wings Tom....Goodbye and thank you!!! Today this made me cry. RIP Tom Petty.
This was an amazing show, thank you for posting this. I was there with a dear friend and we’d try to see Petty a few years before but the show was cancelled due to a tornado and we got stuck in a cow pasture trying to leave… it felt so amazing to finally see him and sing with everyone
This is such an Amazing Song. I’m 46 now, and I get what this song truly means. Hope you’re RIP Buddy. Look Forward to seeing you again someday. Thanks for the Wonderful Music.😢
Still miss him. Still listen to his music at least once a week. Every road trip I’ve taken in my life has started and ended with Tom Petty! Including driving almost 300 miles to see them perform in Colorado when I was in high school.
Seen this band live eight times. There is no better live band out there today. 2.5 hours repeatedly of all his hits with virtually no dead spots. The last show was in Montreal at the Belle Center. Even for the Frenchies, every opening guitar bars of each songs would bring the crowd to its feet roaring. The entire crowd sang the refrains from "Free Falling" and "Learning to Fly" with Tom telling everybody, such do a fantastic job. Do not miss this band if they are coming near to your town or city.
I'm sorry for you, too :(. I just can't seem to get over the sadness. Some of it may have to do with what I'm personally experiencing in my life at the moment.....and it'll forever remind me of Tom's passing now, for the rest of my life.....but some of it is just plain real regret. I'm watching footage of all these live concerts and living vicariously through them. All I can do for now.
I was there, but must've been too dinged up to remember this. RIP Tom Petty. The countless good memories I have had at your shows or listening to your music while growing up will never fade!
What a mix of emotions. I feel so human when I listen to this song. Thank you Tom. I'll look into your eyes and thank you someday. 'I guess I'll know when I get there...' :)

Today I was moved to tears by this. I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. RIP Tom Petty, wish I had seen you live brother.

I just listened to this 5 times on the way home from work off a CD I have and now another 5 or 10 times on here. Almost gets better every time. I rolled the windows down in the car to share it with the world.
Listening in February 2024 ❤
That electric mandolin may be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Wrong - Meredith. He will ALWAYS be with "us."
