Happy new year guys! Hope you enjoy this unusual repair! Drop any ideas for future vids you like to see in the comments and I'll have a think!
Happy new year sir!!
Have a think for your other channel on your nutrition regarding your training. Protein, BCAA, creatine...on what you use for supplements. Love that channel as well.
I wish you a very happy, healthy, safe, and prosperous New Year 😊😊🎉🎉🍾🍾
Buona sera e buon anno
Come mai ha utilizzato così questo tipo di chiodi?
Non si utilizzano così!
Have you ever done any race car driver shoe repairs?
Very well Done Dan, I knew you could do it.
Love your videos, and man do I hate to rain on your parade. But I'm fairly sure you put in the cleats wrong. They're supposed to be nailed up through the welt with the 'leaf' part of the cleat facing out on the side. They have the long nail so you can then fold the part sticking out back down and tuck it under the leaf part. Google 'gebirgjager boots' to see for yourself.. Sorry! Or if this was at the request of the customer, disregard and good video as always. And happy new year!
Damn, yeah, I think you're right.
I googled ww1 mountaineering boots and I see what you mean damn I wonder what happens now
Agree, it would make more sense the studs would be on the bottom similar to what he’s calling the “hob nails”. But in his defense it seems like the drawing shows both placed around the perimeter, fins as well as studs.
Oh jesus!
I googled for pictures of such boots and yes, it would seem you are correct!
Those cleats seem to be upside down.
Interesting, did he re set the studs in another video or ever address this?
Heinrich Harrer, Austrian mountaneer and adventurer wore mountaineering boots just like the pair you recreated. Harrer and four other German climbers left Germany for India on an expedition to climb Nanga Parabat. Harrer was in India with a four man team scouting the Diamir Face for a way to the summit of Nanga Parbat when war broke out in 1939. The team of German climbers were arrested by the British and interned in a detention camp in India. The boots you recreated appear on the feet of our intrepid climbers in the movie, Seven Years in Tibet. Maybe you recall the film about this? Harrer was the man American Actor, Brad Pitt, was cast to portray in the film. British actor, David Thewlis, portrays the expedition leader, Peter Aufschnaiter.
Two of the other escapees were Rolf Magener and Heins von Have. They successfully traveled 2,400Km across India and Burma disquised as both English officers and Swiss businessmen, before reaching Japanese lines. Along the way they dined at British officers clubs, had taylored uniforms made, traveled as officers on trains and frequented restaurants/hotels where the British and Americans stayed.
After convincing the Japanese they were'nt spies, they were then flown to Japan and spent the rest of the war as Honorary Consuls at the German Embassy in Tokyo. They were then repatriated in 1947, with Rolf Magnerer being imprisoned by the Americans on his returne to Germany. This tale is worthy of a movie by itself
The irony was, if they had not escaped the camp in 1944, they would have returned home to Germany several years earlier with the rest of the internees from Dehradun.
Magener's memoir, Prisoner's Bluff, details their adventure and is well worth a read.
@@InspectorGadget1976 Those times were filled with great stories about escaping and avoiding capture. I have to admit I'd really like to see a film about these guys. Thanks
This was a cool pair of boots. Thanks for making the time to share with us all Dan 👍
I went and enjoyed some peace and nature in a rainforest with some visiting family, it was very therapeutic 😌 I hope everyone has had a great Christmas break and had a great New Year's Eve xxx I hope we all enjoy 2023! 💜🤞
Always enjoy seeing the final product on the heavy duty stuff. Thanks for throwing together another video. Hope you have a banner year at the shop!
Steve is such a good dude sharing his knowledge with the community! Awesome work with these boots!
It's cool how Steve helped you out on this one. 2 successful cobblers that may not even have known each other if it wasn't for their channels. Both doing the best they can and learn new things.
12:11 I knew there was something wrong when I noticed as he’s hammering one of the edge cleats in, another one popped off. Another guy in the comments mentioned those are supposed to be inserted vertically not horizontally LOOL. And he seems to be right when you google gebirgsjager boots.
I could not figure how those spikes were to give better grip the way it was mounted to these particular boots. You are right, your mentioned picture search made immediate sense; they are to be directed head down from bottom of the sole. Well, cant get everything perfect. The drawing was not very detailed and theres not many icy mountains to climb in his urban area, just a few neighbourly hills... :)) He makes beautiful works else in general. I wish I had anyone near his skills in my neighbourhood. All I have here is dubiously incompetent and uber greedy guys with a motorized polish machine making no better result than what I can polish by hand, they carry a small selection of shoe laces (end of story yet they call themselves "Cobblers"), and can make double copies of simpler models of existing keys...
Those are a masterpiece. They truly do look li like the real thing. Good job, Dan! ☺️
Happy new year Dan !
Best way to start the year with another shoe repair video.
Looking at period boots. It looks like the side studs you had should've been nailed into the bottom of the sole and the excess stud clinched over the welt after coming through the welt. The "wings" that you have on the bottom should be on the side with the more "stud" shape on the bottom.
You're correct. I have an original pair (found years ago at a Polish flea market - they look gruesome and the bent over nails just add to the effect) which are exactly as you describe - and the 'wings' overlap.
yeah after googling mountaineering boots, I have noticed its nailed on the wrong side 😬
Yep. The boots in the vid look Blake Stitched, and the outsole edges pretty close to the upper. Probably need something with a pukka Norwegian Welt to make it work.
You'd think a UA-cam channel that features fixing shoes and boots could've done the same research a commenter could do to make those mountain boots more period correct. I'd rather watch a video of the commenter making the boots.
Spot on and how uneven were they anyway?? No symmetry, no measuring, not even close to being the same side to side and never mind how uneven the hobnails were too, sheesh, amateur hour... The least one could do would be to measure it all out...
Wow... That's impressive ! 😲 Happy New Year Dan ! All the best for 2023.
Amazing work, again.
Happy New Year Dan. Wishing you all the very best for 2023. Another great video. No problem too small for you to sort out. Professional as always. Xx
great content as usual Dan!
You are a good tradesman. Your work is high quality. Well done mate
Whenever I need to relax and take my mind of things I’ve always come here. I just love these videos. I remember back when you were 30-40k subs. Insane how you’ve grown. Just an amazing job all round. Keep up the videos, much love from Sweden. Ps I’m hoping I’ll be able to send/pop in with a pair of shoes one day.
Love Volbeat!!! Thats amazing that you went to that venue as well!!
Wow! Those were amazing videos as always!
Happy new year, Dan! I spent mine visiting my grandparents. Would love to catch up with Beefy in a future video ! 🐈 😊
Hope the new year will be wonderful for you. This was a fun bit of kit (for me, I didn't have to do anything but watch!🤣). Thanks so much, Dan.
Wow, how labour intensive was that! Methinks you practice in extraordinary fashion a dying art . Fascinating, thank you!
Happy New Year Dan, all the best... loved the finished result on the boots, looked awesome. keep up the good work. :)
Glad to see “A Typical Ride Out” back, relaxing track for these vids

Happy New Year Dan!
Dan, love your channel. Keep up the good work.
I like catching a glimpse through the shop window of what's going on outside.
Happy New Year! This is one where I wish we got to see the customer's reaction. Very cool modification.
Happy new year, mate! Keep up your great work!
Happy New Year! I look forward to your new videos.
Happy new year. This is definitely a unique job!
Mate ,I'm always amazed at the products you provide 🙌 👌
from what I've seen about mountain boots from the period, the cleats you hammered through the side of the boot are suposed to go up through the sole and get hammered around like a hook with the thin sides to the side of the boot.
This, i was like "wtf why" during all the making process
These can be easily seen mounted properly on swiss boots
Yes exactly I was cringing when he put them on wrong
Happy New Year Dan. This must be your most unusual job on here to date. Cracking work.
Happy new years and great fix!
Hi Dan, Happy New Year, looking forward to seeing what you will be doing in 2023👞👠
Happy New Year!
Another shoe sole repair, something we don't see very often in Japan!
Shoe soles are rarely found in Japan!
I have stopped repairing shoes.
I will watch your channel again this year!
That was a very different type of bespoke repair but really enjoyed it Dan 👍 happy new year have a great year

Amazing
I like it boots. Good job 👍.
Happy new year mate. And those hobnails at the start had me dying lol.
Hell yeah Volbeat crew 🤘🔥
I have an idea for future repair but am on holidays…when I get back will email you photos,
…thanks for all the fascinating repairs…I was motivated to buy some of the products, but can’t do miracles like you!
I found your channel through the Tasmanian hobnail boot vid. Absolutely loved those and these are no exception. Something about those chunky teeth just scream awesome. Beautiful work as always, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who especially loves the hobnail vids. Each one feels like it's own uniquely beautiful brute of a boot.
the "teeth" remind me of goth boots, makes me wonder if thats how they originated
Happy New Year’s Dan! So lucky! I’ve wanted to see Volbeat for a long time! Great job on the replica build. It turned out amazing!
Year.
Very nice.
They do look pretty cool.
A bit late, but Happy New Year! You certainly put some interesting stuff on your channel.
The nails are called ‘Tricouni’. Search for Tricouni images to see how they are fitted. The nails go up through the sole and are bent over after cutting to length to prevent them pulling out when using the edge of the boot when climbing on rock.
when u mentioned volbeat i got hyped, saw them a bit ago they are killer
Happy New Year!
Just dropped a quick order online, new year = new shoe care products and as luck would have it I was completely out of Saphir polish. Hope everyone has a safe and productive 2023.
Hey Dan, I ❤️ your channel.
Nice new tattoo on your right arm. Happy new year Dan.
Can we get a clear pic of the ink
Heavy metal boots Great job
Happy New Year, Dan.
I bet the old football hooligan
"Boot Boys" would've just loved those backing the 70s - 80s! Lol.
Romper Stompers! Happy New Year!
Bardzo fajnie to wyszło.
Happy New Year sir.
Beste Grüße aus Deutschland 👍 und frohes neues Jahr
I quite like a bit of Volbeat. I found out about them when they had Neil Fallon as a guest vocalist.
Happy to start the new year with a new video! Replica crap! 🤣🤣🤣
Buona sera e buon anno a tutti.
Happy new year, can’t believe how much I love these videos. My wife is laughing at me😂, by the way, I live in Ipswich Massachusetts, founded in the honor of Ipswich England.
Hi Dan Happy New Year, great video , I would think it made the boots fairly heavy ,
I thought the butterfly metalwork went on the sides of the soles unflattened, with cleat ridges under the soles? Like Gebirgsjager ww2 mountain boots
Excellent.Think i might send my Iron Rangers down to have that done :) All the best for the New Year Dan........Bet all his mates in the re-enactment society want theirs doing now LOL
Happy New Years mate. When can I get some meal plans for hard gainers? I imagine being in the shop like me being I. The office needs proper planning.
Happy New Year, Dan.... excellent job as expected. is that a new tattoo?....hehe Ben in SW Florida
Another excellent video with a very interesting pair of boots. Given that the replica boots were not of the best quality have you ever worked on a pair of boots from William Lennon? They have an almost unique construction method and have been making replica ammunition boots for many years. Happy new year Dan and keep up the good work.
Might be a good idea to send some spares for such a rugged hobnail like that. If the customer is going to use them for what they were intended, he/she will no doubt lose some along the way regardless if you welded them on. According to doctrine, most mountain companies of the period had someone trained to replace the nails as they got lost, during normal usage on the ice. They weren’t trained cobblers, by any stretch, just trained in the most minor repair such as hobnail replacement.
Awesome video. Love historical items. Please show us the new tattoo. And what are those boots you are wearing in this video?
Oh hell yeah, Happy new year Dan.
Edit: Would you be able to fit arch support into a pair of trainers?
