DC's most TWISTED Black Label story! | ROGUES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
- Ten years ago, the Rogues disbanded and went their separate ways. But time hasn’t been kind to the former blue-collar super-criminals. Caught in an endless cycle of prison, rehab, dead-end jobs, broken relationships, probation, and endless restitution fees, the Rogues-Captain Cold, Magenta, Trickster, Golden Glider, Bronze Tiger, and Mirror Master-are sick of paying for their crimes. Luckily, Captain Cold has a plan. One last job that will leave them all richer than their wildest dreams and free from their past...if they can survive. Easier said than done when the job takes them to Gorilla City-with a version of Gorilla Grodd unlike anything you’ve ever seen waiting for them. Following decades plaguing the Flash as some of the most enduring antagonists in all of comics, these are the Rogues as you’ve never seen them before, reimagined by the incredible talents of master storytellers Leomacs (Basketful of Heads) and Joshua Williamson (Batman, The Flash, Infinite Frontier). Rogues is a neo-noir heist that will make your blood run cold. Never miss an episode by subscribing today! bit.ly/2WYvgkt #comicpop

12:30 it’s more 50-50
While Leonard snart, eobard thawne, Sam scudder and James Jesse, Roy bivalo are more universally bizarre.
Names like George harkness, mick Rory, roscoe Dillon, David Hersch, and Neil borman at least have a slim chance to be real and unintentional.
Also the cold gun vs freeze gun, the freeze gun is more chemical in nature like how refrigerator and ac coolants work, where as the cold gun slows down molecules to either lethal or non-lethal levels with the ice just being a side effect.
@@changvasejarik62I'd say that Geroge likes to be called Digger to the point half the wiki pages that refer to him exclusively refer to him as Digger.
Just ordered it, very excited to read this and I’m not watching the video until I read it
Already ordered! Great stuff!
I still find it weird that 10 years equals 40 in this universe.
Where else can you go to get hot takes like "there is definitively human sex workers in Gorilla City, that's canon."
Captain Cold's gun actually slows down the kinetic energy of the atoms to the point of freezing. It isn't an ice gun, it is a cold gun. Essentially he can make stuff drop to absolute zero (when all atomic motion stops). Cold's gun works on anything as far as I know. It just doesn't make ice. Mr. Freeze's gun freezes the moisture in the air to make ice. Also sometimes just fires ice etc.
Schooled 💪
Yeah, it's why it works on the Flash. And theoretically could work on anybody because everybody needs to move
It would probably be very painful for energy-based characters, As he's essentially stopping the very thing that gives them their powers.
@@WannabeWryter I like how he explains it in one book. It slows movement and the ice is just a result due to moisture in the air.
Dope explanation will use if I ever get into this argument
A book like this shows the potential of Black Label. A team can just tell the story they want to tell. No continuity, no return to status quo. Just telling a story.
Definely feel like DC should attempt to do the Black label again with a new push of books like this where it's random off the wall concepts using DC characters
Which would have been better if event comics like Dark Nights Metal or Death Metal were released as Black Labels where you could just read them as two parters and no need to worry about it influencing continuity.
@@tjjordan4207 i liked that death metal influenced continuity tho, in the idea of ending the new 52.
@@AnarchicArachnid if u want off the wall concepts of black label books, there are already are those things already in the label like strange adventures, aquaman andromeda, rorschach, human target, danger street, wonder woman dead earth, wonder woman historia, and the question: many deaths of vic sage. but then for being so off the wall, writers get backlash for it.
@@johnthai6188 I thought New 52 technically ended with something else. Or do you mean it really did end this time with Death Metal?
"Detective Chimp is a member of the great ape family. He is not a gorilla."
I very much appreciate that reference.
I remember meeting Joshua Williamson when he was signing for Superman #1 and asked him to sign my Rogues issues. He seemed so genuinely happy and thanked me for buying them. Hope it gets more attention over the next few years.
I'm a little disappointed no one described Grod as the Top Banana of Gorilla City.
I loved this book but DC killed it by not advertising at all. I ended up not buying the last issue until 6 months later because I didn’t even know it had released.
Yeah, there is a kernel of truth to them saying "Black Label is all batman because books like this failed, should've fuckin bought this," but like DC hasn't advertised any of the non-Batman or Joker Black Label titles. Some of them have been so good, and DC just fucking let's them die off. How the hell are people supposed to know about these books if DC wont tell people about these books?
This is the first I’ve heard of it and I’m a complete lorewhore (if it hasn’t been coined already this is where it came from) for the flash. I assume everything got buried beneath the weight of Batman’s cock
@@t-vann48the Tom king books sold well
They did advertise it. They sent comic stores big posters with Rogues on it. No one cared.
I absolutely, I didn’t know this book existed until watching this video.
Bronze Tiger joining the team was so left field but also intriguing because he is a Central City native. I love how Williamson used a minor connection to the Flash for this.
they were also on the Suicide Squad together
I love Bronze Tiger, but I didn't know that.
@@joeparrigen4982 yeah he’s one of my favs
@@kaldur11yea kinda weird because he isn't even a villain
Bronze Tiger has a lot of sick adaptational appearances on teams such as Suicide Squad, like Michael Jai White played him in the 70s Kung Fu ensemble movie Batman Soul of the Dragon.
I'm surprised that Snart killing people didn't have a bigger part to play. The Rogues are known for not taking lives despite being villains
True enough, but at the same time after ten years of being wash up with a day job he hates , I can believe he lost some scruples.
I was more surprised his last words was a pun you read flash you know his disdain for puns.
TO BE FAIR, the cops were going to murder them
@@changvasejarik62Maybe that's exactly why he punctuated his life with a pun. Because in the end there's nothing he hates more than himself.
Really appreciated Bens genuine “good for him” when sal said mirror master checked themselves into rehab❤
I would have assumed Boomerang and Weather Wizard died on a Suicide Squad mission since Boomerang is kind of a staple Squad member now and Weather Wizard could actually be a useful member for Waller to exploit
Boomer 1000% died as a memeb of the Suicide Squad! Or Tim Drake's father 😂 Bummed they killed of Weather Wizard, always a staple for The Rogues imo but he and Mirror Master are such powerhouses!
Love Sal’s reaction to his own “Fruitopia” joke.
When does he do it?
I'm surprised he didn't call it a banana republic.
DC where’s my War of Jokes and Tricks?
I love how Snart is indirectly responsible for everyone's deaths. If he didn't force Magenta to get every bar of gold then everyone would have made it safely home.
I almost spit my water out when I saw Vader do the Griddy.
I cannot believe you forgot about Roy G. Bivowski, aka the Rainbow Raider! That name is absolutely ludicrous.
That literally was what I was thinking too!
At the time,
When Rogues was coming out, I heard Sal and others say all the time “buy it”. And I had a full wishlist and Rogues was on it but close to the bottom and then I kept hearing it again and again so I bought the hardcover out of anger (not at the book, just mildly annoyed that I was being hyped at a moment when I could only buy some books, plus the covers are awesome) and I read it all in one go the night it was delivered, and closed the book and I said “fine it is that good but I’m not happy about it”. 😂
It’s a keeper, people.
Would love a solo Rogues series in the current continuity! Their stories are always my favorite and Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Weather Wizard are some of the most powerful villains but with morals, codes and rules!
Literally just listened to the episode of All Stars where Josh said that he loved seeing people bring this book up to him. My fiance was in the room, heard it and asked me about it. So I was explaining how like this book doesn't come up to him to get signed often. Flash forward to see the notification for this today I'm like. Oh, that makes a lot of sense
The reason Leonard Snart didn’t show wang… too much shrinkage, a set back to being Captain COLD lol
The Apes-As-Automatic-Sales-Bump myth is my favorite bit of obscure comic book history.
LOL at Ethan thinking ‘…and this is different how??’
Literally got the hardcover an hour ago. Cant wait to check this out after reading!
"Were gonna be awesome "-Ben.
Rolling a chapstick loudly is a power move. Amazing episode guys!
"There are only four rules you need to remember: make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan. Follow my lead and you’ll be fine."
I'd say the gold is being put to use. It was used for Flash's Retirement Plan. Because he is set for the rest of his life, now.
Hey man! It's been awhile since we met How's the mustache?
@@nickypool415 Good! Thank you for asking! And you?
@@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache alright.....Just went to a mental asylum after reading trouble. I thought it would be just a cute romance comic, I was wrong
@@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache I am still wondering about "Should I start going to therapy now or should I wait for the nightmares to settle in?"
54:17
Guy Gardner: What happens when a guy comes at you with a stick?!
Alan Scott: Same thing to you when it's painted yellow!
Also out of continuity because the Rogues don’t kill. It’s why the Flash respects them. Because while they are criminals they do not kill at all.
In the case of Captain Cold tech vs Mr Freeze tech, I always thought of it as Freeze being more “chemistry” based, like he’s spraying some sort of super liquid nitrogen, vs Cold with a “physics” based approach, where he slows the movement of molecules to super cool things instantly, which would kind go in line with the speed theme of, and a reason he’s effective as, a flash villain.
WOW I’ve never heard of this story before and loved
This episode! Always wanted a good ol Supervillain heist with a bunch of colorful silver age villains.
Just like with FF Full Circle, you guys have convinced me to go get this book immediately
The new script visuals are a pretty fun idea. It’s a small change but a welcome one!
I'd love to watch Josh Williamson watching this episode or at least hear him respond (especially Ethan's characterizing it as Ocean's 11 with monkeys, and Gorilla City as "Hill Valley after Biff takes over").
Love when they bring sick books I never heard of
When this video posted I literally went to my comic shop and bought it. I was eye balling it for weeks now. This was just my sign to do it. And oh my God, what a stunning, violent, awesome rogues story
This story is badass and the art looks awesome- I wish this episode hadn't been the first time I'd heard of it because it seems like it really deserved to do a lot better, but I am glad that you covered it because I intend to check it out
Thank you guys so much for getting me through 1 1/2 hours of the last 2 1/2 hours of my shift. It went by so fast I forgot to take my last break. Now I don’t even need it. Thanks for the awesome episode!
I just read Rogues this afternoon to get ready for this episode....it was honestly the best book I've read in a long time. I'm not a big flash fan so I never would've thought to read it. Thanks...this is why I love comic pop.
Yo i listened to this video up until the end and stopped it before yall told the ending then went to my local and bought it. Art is so sick and story is dope asl so far. Thanks CP! 📈📈✊✊
That reveal of Captain Cold would be hilarious. Like, guess we got to see the ol icicle and cubes.....😂
The shorts you posted around this series give some great buildup for this video.
Well-done.
Exactly, I was so excited for this episode because of the shorts
Leomacs is the best name ever inveted by man.
So I bought this mini series and I fricken loved it! It was such a fun heist story.
I almost bought this book several months ago. It's great that Sal decided to make an episode on it!! 👽👍🏼
I can't imagine what numbers this would do but would love for you guys to cover the IDW Ghostbusters books!
So would we!
I saw literally NO ADVERTISING for this!
I freaking love this book (most likely because I’m a big flash fan) so happy that you’re talking about it!
Yes! Very fun. I’m glad you guys covered this book after the previous interviews with Williamson. Always a good time with comic pop!
This was honestly an awesome story and a very fun episode! I definitely want to check this book out for myself
Please pretty please do more flash related books, hell I’ll send mine in if that’s what it takes
Loved this episode. I hope it does well so we get more like this.
I doubt anyone but me would be excited for it, but my dream back issues would be the Quasar arc Cosmos in Collision. Hell, that whole series was full of fun crazy ideas
Wow, this book sounds wild. Hadn't even heard of it until this episode. Might pick it up now.
Sam sounds like he took the relationship in King Kong way too seriously
I just bought this today for my birthday at one of the comic shops I go to. Can't wait to Read it
Anyone else wonder how Snart doesn't just die of heat stroke? At least Mr Freeze is wearing a suit that keeps him cold, Snart is running around in a jacket in the middle of summer. It's been 100f in lots of places this year, how is he not just miserable?
Or does his...chilly... personality keep him cool?😂
Man, I didn't even know this book existed until this video.
Yay! Rogues was one of my favorite comics from last year and one of the best things Joshua Williamson has written. Great episode
Ok, THIS should have been a movie!
I feel like this would kill as an animated movie ngl
on the topic of Flash villain names, Rainbow Raider's name is Roy G. Bivalo
also I think the main difference between Cold and Freeze's weapons is that Cold's is way less instantly fatal than Freeze's
Wow I literally went to my book store and bought this the other day and am reading it… what a coincidence
the fact the suicide squad game is kevin conroys last credit playing batman is so sad and upsetting, and thats even before you factor in the fact your trying to kill him in the game
I’m glad your covering this it was a fantastic run that got overshadowed.
Im glad youre covering this, it was one of my favorite books of the year!
Ah, so I see Grodd's view on children is the same as that of angels in Good Omens - some of your children? It's ok, we'll just give you new ones!
My favorite fact about Snart's sister, is for the CW Flash show, they clearly didn't know how to make the skates work. So instead they gave her, her own version of Snart's cold gun, it turned things into gold. A gold gun if you will.
I have to give them props for the pun if nothing else
0:02 that’s not entirely true Sal the last book by Josh Williamson you guys did was Batman/Superman and that was a good video
Love diving into these comics with you guys!
36:39 those structures in Gorilla City are based on the Supertrees found in the country of Singapore, also known as the Lion City.
1:19:42 studio execs when the strike works and their paycheck drops by 50 million dollars
The thrist for Grodd is wild yall.
really loved this story!! one of the best y’all have done in recent memory :D
Couple of observations about this book.
1. It says something about The Rogues that even though they aren't particularly deep, they can play off each other well enough to have Williamson give them their own book to carry, and they pull it off well enough.
2. Snart clearly forgot some of his big rules he set up for the rogues after 10 years. Keep it to the job, don't kill cops or children. Draws too much attention to do otherwise. I think all that anger made Captain Cold lazy and impatient. Poor play Lenard.
3. The difference between Captain Cold and Mr. Freeze's weaponry is the difference between firing a liquid which freezes as it comes out of his gun, and slowing down the molecules in the direction of the gun towards absolute zero. It's one of the reasons Snart's victims can come out in better condition. They're essentally placed in suspended animation so long as nothing else happens to them. While Victor's victims are frozen from the outside in, which gives all the regular problems you have when your body temperature plunges due to outside circumstances.
4. That last line from condiment king is a little sad. That Captain Cold made the rogues to function well together, but in the end he never could see that they could be a family together in solidarity rather than just "the crew".
5. That bit about Cold's greed doing him in at the end? Rather poignant overall about how villains are never fully satisfied.
6. You all were on point with your humor this episode. Bravo.
Great work everyone. Even if this video will never does batman numbers (probably), I'm glad you chose to make it.
That Dry Cleaner joke Ben made at 5:01 is so clever with how fast he came up with it.
I know Golden Glider is useless as a villain and she was technically a villain example of being a fridged woman just to give her brother man pain but she's my favorite Flash rogue. Mainly because I like thinking she's the team mom of the group.
That I love that she's basically the most violent out of The Rogues.
Also in the stupid names gallery: Roy G. Bivolo
To build off my own head canon (though related to Tiff's Lobo Endless thing) all that Gorilla Gold ends up in Despair's rat room. (Making the connection between Mirror Master entering the Mirror Realm of Despair, like some unwanted ant.)
My theory on the difference between the freeze gun and the cold gun was that the freeze gun projects a blast of ice or like sub-zero liquid, and the cold gun actually stops molecules from vibrating or moving which results in freezing. I think this works better for Snart, because Mr freezers technology is baised on maintaining his body really cold temperatures, and just stopping his molecules from moving and instant freezing would probably kill him
A really cool Rogues story (that I hope is done on Back Issues one day) is The Flash: Rogues Reloaded.
It’s about the Rogues pulling one last big heist in Central City before leaving town for good, while having awesome fights with The Flash. I get major Ocean’s 11 vibes from it.
The chapstick 😂
It sucks to hear that the non-Batman Black Label books sell like shit because those have been some of my favorite minis to come from this imprint so far.
This, Suicide Squad: Blaze, Catwoman: Lonely City, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, Swamp Thing: Green Hell, and Aquaman: Andromeda were all bangers that more people should have been reading for sure.
I love this story so much. I love that it’s basically just Heat meets Usual Suspects but with the Rogues and talking gorillas. I love how hard it commits to the tragic yet classic noir tone. I love the fact that it might be the best thing Joshua Williamson has ever written, and quite possibly the best thing Leomacs has ever drawn. I love it all, and I’m so glad you’re covering it here.
The main difference between Mr.Freeze's and Capt. Cold's gun is Victor's freeze things to a very low temperature. While Len's gun can make things turn to absolute zero, making even the fastest man stop moving. It why Snart is supposed to be the antithesis to the flash.
THE MORE YOU KNOW ===*
I stopped at 30 minutes, now i have read the book and I'm ready to see the rest of the episode, already laughing at 29:00 knowing the future
What a great story.
Great episode, this was really fun. Wish I knew this was a thing when it was out, but grabbing it now.
Sal was spot on with the Wild Bunch comparison but this book also really reminded me of Smokin’ Aces. The Vegas-like setting, crazy unique blend of characters, and. How bleak the endings are
I loved this so much by far the best heist story, in my opinion, and the humor had me rolling
I am relativity sure that that Central City mural was inspired by the Diego Rivera's "Detroit Industry" Mural at the D.I.A.
It is pretty impressive, and worth a Google to any who have not seen it,
Pumped for this! Honestly havent read it yet but I did buy it when it came out and now I have a great reason to catch up on some reading.
Great episode guys. Best one in a while
The real takeaway from the ending: Snowflame’s life as a villain is ruined!
Another top tier episode! I am a huge flash fan, but I’ve fallen off the weekly comic train since the death of Comixology. Hadn’t heard of this, but I love it. Gonna have to pick it up sometime.
Ive been watching you guys since 2015, love commentaries you guys give 😂
Great reading of a great story!
Great episode!!
We finally know what that movie was about in Another Nail.
Had to pause this one after 20 mins because I was getting too invested. Love when that happens with a back issues! Will return after I purchase and read it 💪
