This lady knows what she is talking about! The key to Lo Mein is the Dark Soy sauce flavored with Mushrooms. It's incredibly awesome! I've used chicken stock to loosen the sauce up before but I prefer water. Chicken Stock or Chicken broth, for me anyway, is way too much sodium when mixed with soy sauce and oyster sauce.

@@dianabernardo-mendez2705 yeah, I've kinda moved beyond using chicken broth or even water. I don't add either anymore. Personally it gives the Lo Mein a chicken noodle soup type of base flavor. You'd think it wouldn't be noticeable with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil and Dark soy sauce but I can taste the difference.

I've made it three times and it was wonderful every time. 16 ounces of lo mein noodles make two large meals for us. It microwaves well, too. We use four cloves of fresh garlic, the white of three green onions, some green cabbage, and matchstick cuts of carrots and celery. Stick with the sauce recipe even if it means a trip to the Chinese market. We serve with egg rolls and/or orange chicken. Thank you for sharing this easy, fantastic recipe, Tess!

Great receipe. Mmmmmm 5 star !!
*I changed order slightly for my preference* , I like dark noodles but light coloured veg
Stir fried veg in garlic ginger oil. Removed to plate.
Stir fried noodles with extra oil and lo-mein sauce THEN mixed so noodles coated THEN added cooked veg back.
Quick mix, so veg not dark looking...mix was amazing just like takeaway !!
(Optional) added big pinch of sugar and mixed as garnish....really adds a sweet note for dish to be extra special.
    The lo-mein sauce is perfect...
*THIS IS THE RECEIPE TO KEEP FOR LIFE !!!*

I like making the whole bag of noodles at once. I make lo mein in the evening for dinner, then for a quick snack the next day, I mix the noodles with some thai peanut sauce and a wee bit of soy sauce, tahini and sesame oil and pop that in the fridge to thicken. A little cold veg on top and it's darn near identical to my local Chinese restaurant's "Cold Sesame Noodles"

I know this is an old post but for those reading through the comments (it's not far down in the comment section) there is a solution to not having dark soy sauce available or on hand at any given time. Just need to use a couple ingredients you probably already have on hand. Regular soy sauce, brown sugar, or regular sugar, molasses, etc. There are plenty of recipes online to make your own dark soy sauce, I've done it many times with different combinations of ingredients. They have all worked. They may not get the sauce as dark but they do get the taste and thickness of dark soy which is the most important thing about dark soy sauce. :)

I just made this lo mein recipe and it was delicious! Thank you! (Well, actually, I watched all your lo mein videos and the links you provided and did an amalgam.)
I’ve made lo mein plenty of times and it never came out quite as good as this time around. I’m in Copenhagen, and I’ve not been able to find the Pearl River brand dark mushroom soy here (much to my dismay, because I love it!). So I substituted a mixture of plain dark soy with the lighter, thinner, Thai mushroom soy and was able to achieve that smokey flavor. I doubled the recipe (cooking in batches, with a clean wok every time), and I somehow used just a bit too much ginger for my taste buds, but everyone else loved it, and I know that this will be my go-to lo mein recipe from now on.
(As a tip for anyone watching in Europe: I think that, generally, the type of ginger they sell most at the Asian markets and grocery stores here has a markedly stronger acidic flavor than what we typically get in U.S. markets. So to achieve the flavors of many American-Chinese recipes, it may be a good idea to reduce the ratio of ginger to garlic? The smaller ginger roots in Europe are often quite pungent. For all I know, this is true in the U.S., too, but...)
Again, thank you, Tess! Love it! This was a great vid. And I subscribed.

Starving because I'm nursing a monster! I just made the recipe. Delicious! Was a tad salty for me because I'm not used to it, but with a little more water and mmmmmm! Quick fix. Everything about it was delicious, thank you for your recipe!!

I live in a really small town and we dont have an Asian market. I would use spaghetti or linguine but to me there's a big difference between those and the lo mein noodles. Guess I'm going to Amazon lol
