Kalashnikov-USA KR9 500 rd Review: Did The Saiga-9 Wannabe Go The Distance?

  • Its here finally folks, our full length review of the new KR-9 Carbine from Kalashnikov-USA. Actually, this is only Part 1 of 2.
    We begin with a brief history of the PP19 Bizon and Vityaz-SN SMGs used in Russia, as well as Izhmash's semi-auto Saiga-9 carbine.
    Then we compare the KR9 with two Izhmash imports, the SGL31-94 and SGL12-94 to see how close K-USA got to an authentic clone.
    On to the main event, we run 500 rounds through the new carbine at the range, trying several ammo brands and 5 OEM mags.
    And to finish up we return to the table for disassembling and a look inside; plus some final thoughts on today's results.
    Part #2 will be a 'Discussion At The Range' episode where we both pit the KR9 against the Romanian Nova PAK9 and NAK9.
    So stay tuned for that and more.

    It looks great but that 16 inch beral ruined it if there is one gun you should SBR it it's this one . Stupid law just to collect more money from you. Greetings from sunny Slovenia it is almost spring here hope weather is going to be as nice as it is no more winter please hehe

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 5 років тому +12

      Actually, it has nothing to do with money. It is about control. Truth is the gov't spends more than the $200 tax cost to actually run and issue the SBR stamp...Yeah only a gov't could manage that but there it is.

    • @timewave02012
      @timewave02012 5 років тому +2

      When the 1934 NFA was passed, $200 was intended to be prohibitively expensive. These days it's more of a nuisance. There's a lot of talk about "common sense gun law" from the other side, but they never acknowledge how ridiculous it is that attaching a stock to a pistol (making it less concealable) is illegal. As for the weather, I live in Illinois where winter is moderately oppressive, but in two weeks I'm going to Arizona, where the temperature should be ideal.

    • @alexandruianu8432

      Definitive Arms had a better solution on their AKX-9 - they had the threads at the sight tower and had a long extension with a similar outward diameter as the barrel. It had flash hider slots at the end so it didn't look too goofy. Given that it was attached by a small weld, you could easily remove it after SBRing.

    @BenBelkin 5 років тому +4

    “They have done what US Manufacturers should do”. My friend, I could not agree more. The design of the system coupled with KUSA’s execution makes for an awesome product for us. If there was no NFA, would you go for the shorty or stick with the carbine?

    • @giantpune
      @giantpune 5 років тому +1

      No reason for anybody to prefer 16" barrel in 9mm if it wasn't for the NFA. On this gun you don't get a longer sight radius. And 9mm only gains like 20-50fps when you go from 9 to 16", depending on the load. In the real world, that difference is negligible.
      The only benefits for the longer barrel on this gun are it makes it easier to find in the dark and its a longer stick in case you need to swing it at somebody.

    • @MishacoOBA
      @MishacoOBA  5 років тому +5

      With no nfa, the short barrel is the no brainer. We ended up with the rifle in part because of a availability, but also because it already has the right stock and hardware. If Misha ever decided to SBR, it's a simple matter of cutting and crowning the barrel. That said,the rifle version is really darn close in appearance to the Saiga 9 carbine. - Jay

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 5 років тому +2

      Actually? I kind of like what Izhmash did with the Saiga-9...a 13" or 14" barrel seems about right for this one.

    • @MK12MOD_POOR
      @MK12MOD_POOR 5 років тому +1

      I asked about them making 7.62 and 5.45 guns in the future and they said they are working on them and will announce them closer to their release date. They didn’t say if it was any time soon. They did have the 7.62 guns listed in their website for a while but took them down before Shot Show. I’m hoping, with the new management, that they start turning out guns within a year or so.

  • @jamesjanssen2378
    @jamesjanssen2378 5 років тому +5

    I never believed K-USA would produce anything worth considering , guess I was wrong(happily!) . The fact that it has not failed ( with various ammo) in 500 rds looks to be a really good sign . I have posted earlier that 1000+ rds without fail means .... its a capable home defense weapon. The same standard I use for 9mm carry pistols. So far , from your tests ,it looks promising . To be honest , I am not a fan of the 9mm AK but ,,, it holds out hope for , maybe , a quality 100% American 7.62--5.45 . One that does not self destruct . . Good video and looking forward to more on this KR-9. Thanks !!!!!!

      Thank you for these videos Misha! I live in California where anything over 10 rounds is a felony, any weapon under 16 inches is a felony… same with automatics, folding stocks, semi auto machine guns, silencers, the list goes on. Luckily they make a CA model of this. In July, our state, has mandated an additional 11% tax for all purchases on top of the federal 11% and standard taxes. We also have background checks and fees for ammo. Because of your videos, I am able to make the best decisions for robust weapons that will last. A lot of Californians that are currently stuck here, are worried about our border issues with rising crime and the state government closing in on our 2nd amendment rights. Aka the weapon collecting and door knocking. Thank you for the informed videos!

      I bought about 300 rounds from WM back when the aluminum case just came to market years ago. These 3 AKs were the only thing we've been able to get it to cycle. Every other gun, Glocks, Scorpion Evo 3, numerous Walthers, POF and MKE MP5 (K and full size), Ruger PC9, even an Uzi Pro ended with a stuck case and often had to be tapped out with a cleaning rod. It's possible they've improved the design on the ammo or this was a bad lot - or you've "Mr. Glass"-ed all my ammo luck from me :). - Jay

      Maybe we're just tired of shorty 'pistols' with armbraces? but we like how the KR9 looks too. The barrel really deson't seem too out of place. I think if it were 14" or so, it would look just about perfect....so maybe 1 day I'll cut it down and P+W the muzzle brake on? We'll see.

      It’s a 5.5 mm pin. Several sellers have the factory triangle stock for sale. You can also buy AR15 brace adapters made in Russia that will still fully fold flat with the side of the receiver. They also fit the Saiga 9, which is what they are made for in Russia. I just ordered one from IvanTactical, it will probably take another month to show up in the mail.

      signs I suppose so, but I buy 5.45 in the 1000 round crates for roughly $230 shipped. Slightly more than some 7.62x39 and steel case .223, but the 5.45 for just a little more gives you allot more punch and wound potential. Not that it matters a whole lot in close quarters, getting shot sucks.

      @@Genevasuggestions1 Part of the issue is that there aren't a whole lot of countries left making 5.45 so it is going to get more expensive over time. I think only Bulgaria and Romania make it in any significant quantities and they've been selling it all to Ukraine and Syria
