- Join us as we try and figure out why a customer's semi-auto AK type rifle isn't working, and then try and find an effective fix.
The exact rifle in this video is a Polish WBP Fox AKM Sporter, but really this can happen with any AK and the steps and possible resolutions are exactly the same for virtually all of them.
Also featured here is a misbehaving Chinese Polytech AK47/S "legend", along with a second WBP Fox.

Please consider taking your channel content more in this direction. I'm a "hobby gunsmith" (I live in IL and the governor made it cost prohibitive to get my 07. He signed the bill a week before my first ATF interview was scheduled. So back to working on just mine and family rifles for free and fun). These types of videos are fascinating and very enjoyable to watch. There is all sorts of build vids of varying quality available, but your wealth of historical knowledge plus gunsmith knowledge plus teaching background plus good video presentation is pretty unique. AK files are helpful, but video is worth 1000 words I guess. And finally what motivated me to write this novel LOL is your comment about ComBloc manufacturing style's. Most of the classes I've taken are very obliviously an AR15 armor who's familiar with the Kalashnikov family of rifles, but has little or no knowledge of the design philosophy that goes into them. Instead it's "So this is how we'd do it with an AR but with an AK blah blah blah. Anyway sorry for the long comment. Keep up the good work!
I learned a few things today. Persistence pays is one of them... Thanks Mishaco.
Misha
I lift my hat to you
A true scholar and a gentleman
Witch is really really rare these days
Thanks but keep your hat...i don't wear hats usually, as you might have noticed...which is funny as my dad loves hats....and also now he's bauld.
A worthwhile video. Been around the AK for many years ( never a problem) and would never have guessed it would be a top cover .
Thanks , always learning !!!!
First time I took my Saiga from Arms of America to the range it wouldn't cycle. Ended up being a misaligned trigger spring that I fixed. Just goes to show that high end guns can malfunction too.
Apologize to you guys, I should watch the whole video before commenting...you both are ahead of the power curve on handling the situation. Another really good video post...thanks for sharing this on this AK-47. Good information.
I've owned about 8 ak variants over the years and have probably fired a combined 20,000 rounds out of all of them, and I've had 2 malfunctions, both to hollowpoint tula ammo

Sar 1-3

Mak 90

Weird that such a high end ak had such a strange problem
I've found that the raised style bullet guide found in more modern aks works better with odd bullets like soft points and Hollow points, than the more flat style of older akm style bullet guides
@Eugene Stoner it's not 2007 anymore mr boomer, but nice stale meme tho

Thanks Misha and Jay! My Fox has been doing the same thing and I couldn’t figure it out. Its been at the bottom of the go to list unfortunately because I couldn’t trust it. After watching this video, I now know the issue. Thank you very much!!!
I am troubleshooting a Romy G it doesn’t throw the old one out so I’m starting from scratch. Thanks for the slow me down simple approach to troubleshooting. Thanks Misha and Jay
I had recoil spring binding in the carrier cause similar issues. Twisted the spring a bit and oiled it
Wow, what tenacity! I was starting to get frustrated.
Never quit!
Invaluable information for beginners.
My adult kids bought me an early bday present. A WASR 10 this is my entry into the AK platform.watched a ton of your videos and learned alot.maybe go this weekend and put a few hundred rounds through it.thanks
That bolt hold open mag made me think it was still malfing for a second lol
Same - it gets me every time. - Jay
You and me both
This seemed to be an appropriate thing to watch while I fit the mag catch on my AIMS-74 kit build.
Thanks for the very useful information!
Thanks. Quite educational.
I’ve seen out of spec combloc recoil assemblies that are too tall at the rear trunnion and cause the same malfunction.
Sometimes you can bend the rear receiver tabs to allow the recoil spring to not jump out of the rails. Worked on my md63 romanian and now it runs flawlessly.
Riveting, I think the single cat hair adhered to the cover was causing the malfunction.
I think one of Kalashnikov's tests was to dump an entire cat into the action and then try and run his rifle.
@@misha5670 LOL!
Good video y’all
Great video Misha. Thanks for all of the very useful info. My “go to” channel for AK type info. Also, Thank you James from TFB for pointing out Misha a while ago.
Thanks much for watching...and speaking of James, he's been quiet lately, hope all is ok.
Just got my Fox from Atlantic about a week ago. Man I hope I don’t have any surprise headaches. Polish rifles were never on my radar before but after a little research and AK Operators Union I took the bait. I chose this over an Arsenal I hope I won’t regret it.
Highly unlikely you'll have any issues! The Fox is my go-to AK and has been 100% after a few hundred rounds, right out of the box. - Jay
Another awesome video that I enjoyed thoroughly! Thanks Misha!
Any tips on how to lower my love for AK variants? Safes are getting too full and wallet is getting more spacious.
Move to a ban state or england or something idk. - Jay
Buy a VSKA or I.O.
@@misha5670 Ha!
Love this kind of info.
Good stuff, the project was actually pretty fun. There's just not much that can go wrong on an AK that you can't fix. Well unless its the trunnion or barrel, and if in that case, you have to decide if its worth the trouble to replace or just scrap the gun for parts (often times it is), cheers.
Start with running it without a top cover...notice any those 'that ain't right' problems, but wear eye protection and diagnose the problem. Usually it is something on the simple side, but usually things can be out of spec. Just saying.
BLYAT! Learned a lot from this
Great video. Logical and methodical evaluation process, but have you ever heard of Occam's Razor?
I'm pretty sure I had an issue with tight chamber on my new (well, unissued) Yugo SKS. It would cycle brass cased without a hitch but it wouldn't cycle Tula at all. I wound up using it as a bolt action. I send it to Murray's who did the Throat and Neck reaming (making the chamber bigger) and that fixed it. Now it cycles anything.
I had the same problem with a PSA gen 2.
I noticed that too lol
Very interesting Misha! Thank you.
Rich.
It all comes down to who built your AK and how much pride they took.
Honestly, no, exactly the opposite. Kalashnikov specifically designed the thing to be assembled by unskilled (non-gunsmith) workers on a big assembly line. It has many generous tolerances and doesn't require laser precision to get right. If someone follows the original Russian plans, they'll end up with a good, reliable AK. Thing is these days, American consumers have turned most of this on its head; valuing cosmetics and fit+finish over ....well over just being an AK.
36:36 And even then, there are glitches which aren't intended by the developers. People have got quite a bit unrealistic with their expectations for like the past 5 years with everything.
Amen, here-here!
Thanks!
Love you too!
My AK is ejecting straight back into the receiver, instead of out the side. Any thoughts?
LB Dickson Higher strength spring and or change the extractor.
This Guy Maybe it is the spring...it ejects just fine when I manually cycle the action.
for all those people who wanted a bolt hold open feature on an AK.
Hello Misha, I have a question about purchasing AKM magazines in bulk. Would you be able to help me find a seller of bulk AKM magazines?
sure, shoot me an e-mail: ozarkbeararms@gmail.com (youtube, i am sure he's only wanting mags of 30 rds or less!)
This guy is great!
Nice 👍👍
How do I know if my ak is pregnant?
... pee on it? Is that how that works? I don't know I don't have children. -Jay
@@MishacoOBA I will try and report back. I love you guys haha!
Are fox rifles still being imported?
Matt Morrison no
Technically yes but a batch has not come in in a few months
Ok.i was going to ask what happened. Thanks guys
I would have first checked the dust cover.

What is the name of your business, love your channel
Nice little mystery, there. :)
Thought the internet might enjoy it *shrug* we had the video footage already, so might as well use it for something.
@@misha5670 REALLY glad to hear something's being done about that stock!
With a little hammer work, the tight cover should be a quick fix itself.
Woot woot 🇺🇸🍾
Mag problem
How do you feel about the korean AK mags??
The black ones work fine but are made out of thinner gauge steel and have smaller welds than com bloc mags, avoid the grey ones as they are full of issues
Junk buy romy surplus instead
May the fourth be with you sir
Don't shoot me, but the last couple years? I hate this but I am kind of over Star Wars. Not sure if has been the fans, Disney, or Lucas Films but for whatever reason; the IP has just lost its magic for me. Its no longer 'fun' know what I mean? And this, something i grew up with too. I was too young to see the orig trilogy in theeatres (well i could ahve but back then, parents didn't take 2-3 year olds to them), but my brother recorded them for me on tape from HBO (yep admitting to a 35+ year old crime lol) and i watched them til the tapes wore out! I did go see them in theatres in '97 with friends and it was a great, fun time. Luckily by then we (ok they) could drive so it was kind of a big thing, and we even all had dates believe it or not lol.
Misha haha just got the they could drive the hits just keep on coming.
Misha, do you have any vision or are you totally blind or "just legally" blind? You amaze me on how well you handle your firearms.
Totally blind....i do talk a bit more about it over on my personal channel (misha) if you relaly don't find the subject boring? lol
My step-great grandfather was totally blind (diabetes related) and his hobbies were belt making (leather work) & he couldn’t read Braille but coukd feel money and tell you the denominations. It was totally strange to me and I find it interesting and fascinating both that firearms aren’t just your hobby but in fact are your life! I am in awe of you, man! Keep on doing what you love
I've seen people cus their guns screaming crying throwing absolute fits change mags fixed anything I trouble shoot try the simple things first
If we'd tried the dustcover first, then that wouldn't have been much of a video now would it? The customer was convinced it was the FCG and at first Jay & I thought it was just a bad recoil spring; which would have been simple.
