Generating fast ball is at the heart of any All Blacks attack. In this video we outline and illustrate the effective use of All Blacks fast-ball generation tactics in the face of resolute defence.
Simple in nature and name, it's the clarity of thought, execution, fitness and total trust in team systems which shines through.

strangely similar to barcelona, keeping possession and doing basics right to work field position and work a man advantage, then move it fast to the magic man (carter/messi) to finally unlock the door. That possession and constant recycling of ball moves opposition around, fatigueing them mentally and physically until a crack opens and then clinical to slip through. A real machine like team with every individuals decision making and skillset exceptional- developed so early it becomes instinctive. The NZ/ Barca blueprint produces trophies and beautiful sport
I would say the magic man Carter/Xavi and Iniesta
I was just thinking that too! Barca is the best at it. If you watch American Football, you see similarities in some of it. Some teams run the ball repeatedly, maintaining possession, wearing down their opponents and getting them focused on the slower, brute running, either straight ahead or around. The defense gets tired, lazy or stacks up against the run, creating overloads in the backfield so then the offense throws the ball to the faster receivers for big gains. There's a lot of differences, but there's a lot strategic overlap between the 3 sports.
This was when they didnt have Aaron smith and didnt have as fast a ball as compared to now.
+zephanish good point. they have changed things a lot since those ponderous days.
Nothing against Weepu, but i thought his service is slow by 2015 RWC standards. And of course Aaron is the best 9 currently
Robert Mc Farlane Murray hasn't played enough at that level to be considered world class. Still good player though. Wouldn't be surprised if he reaches that soon though.
Robert Mc Farlane agains the all blacks all i saw was very good kicking and 2 cheats.
I feel Murray is a cross between Smith and Perenera but just a step lower in consistent skills; Smith box kicking and fast ball, Perena's support play and aggressiveness.
1st time i heard you say his name with the ball. nek minute try
that was just beautifull, seriously
+Jordan Watson. Such great structure! They so drilled they like a well oiled machine preforming at its best
fantastic video, and channel. thanks for sharing
Youre so cool! I dont suppose Ive watch something like this before. So good to seek out any person with some original ideas on this subject. realy thank you for starting this up. this video is something that is wanted on the net, someone with a little originality. useful job for bringing something new to the internet!
well done coaching staff
Great channel!!
Who else thought they were buffering at first?
Welcome Bonus: When the footage is sped it's easier to ignore the moronic, whining of the australian commentators.
Don't know about the whining - I thought they sounded pretty fair and impartial.
PS I'm NZ, in case you get the wrong idea about *my* fairness and impartiality...
Australian commentators are the most biased and arrogant on the planet. So arrogant in fact they'd gloat about being the most arrogant.
Kearns especially.
That was amazing
learnt how all blacks achieve a high ball retention rate by preventing counter rucking at the break down by lying all over the contest zone in the name of rucking
Kori Munuhe dickwad
Kori Munuhe lol
Is it illegal though?
Mackem Slinger yes
+Evan Tyrell
Nope. Lying over the tackle zone and making the opponents lose their footing is not illegal at all.
So simple yet so hard to stop
This is a great video
Great Analysis!!.
This is how they burnout every team...
Nice one
Looks like Joe Schmidt's attack style to me. Please feel free to add any thoughts as I am no rugby expert, but always love to learn the nuances of the game. Thanks for the upload
Such discipline
my opinion is if you look at the australian defensive line they always have forwards clogging not just 1 or 2 but 3 channels thats how wide they play so what the allblacks are doing is working around the middle of the park keeping these forwards working if you look to the wing its only 2 or 3 backs on the edges therefore a back always has a chance to beat a forward
nonu trys to. its just a waiting game they dont have the quick ball that arron smith provides other wise the try would have happened 1 hundred phases ago
mesmerising to watch...its like they did it at will
Looking back, I dont think weepu was nz's quickest serving 9(His service is so slow). But he was accurate, could kick goals and was incredibly consistent.
Ta - most interesting. Yes, I would agree the comment below that Smith has made a difference.
Thorn was a beast
They don't do this as much anymore. They like to use the ball and try to break the line or get to the edge off set piece. You don't see them setting a ruck up midfield as often. When the do bring in runner off set piece, it's usually the blindside winger and they always have the option of dropping the ball back to the 10 to go wide.
Analyse and adapt that's why they're the best, keep looking for gaps and they will come
Props to Australia for the defense though 👍
when u say "fast ball" we are talking about speed the ball is taken into the ruck and worked to the back of the ruck so the defensive line hasn't had a chance to set themselves and the attacking backs can expose gaps correct?? like getting a roll on in league.. not how fast weepu's pass is or how many phases it took to score a try...good analysis, where's the monkey lion thing come from, do ABs use it??
The elephants play or the pod is an old technique and the pick and roll the monkeys is a basic forward activity. This is basically keeeping the game tight with forwards running one off the breakdown so you can get over the gain line quicker and easier and you have the support of the other forwards. PLayign this good to drw the ther teams forwards and maybe the half back nd 1st center to create a natural overlap from the next phase - It is usually good to get wide ball quickly so it usually means a miss 1 route which is fly half to the 2nd centre (missing the 1st centre then you have your full back then winger on the overlap - long passes create space on the outside and negate a drift defense. PAss it through all hands and all the opposition do is keep drifting s the last man the winger gets hit by load pr people with no space. The reason why teams hit up the middle is tontie in outside backs to create and overlap to exploit and have less players in the line to attack. Simple stuff and performed well
works well if the opposition arent counter rucking ...if they are all ..well well
I appreciate the work that went into this video, but this is not fast ball. It is ponderous Northern hemisphere technique. I say this as an England supporter!
27 phases holy shit 😂
Ah the good day when the wallabies actually stood a chance and could compete against the all blacks
I cringe when I see the forwards pick and go these days cause we're not good enough to get through multiple phases
looks a lot like Blue Bulls rugby
Blue Bulls kind of sounds like Blue Balls
Highland was here
My name chef
Brilliant analysis. Thank you very much
Who won this game though? I just noticed the score ..boo🤣
The New Zealand Pacific island selection (NZPIS) is the best multinational rugby team to have ever existed
Peace for All I agree. Australian Pacific Island Selection is the worse multinational rugby team to have ever existed.
ouch!!!
The English Pacific Islander team is pretty good too
We aren’t ashamed to say that we regard all our citizens as New Zealanders. I think our last World Cup squad had one player born outside of NZ and that was Melbourne
Hm, NZ has the largest Pacific Island community in the world, I think. Not many imports. Most of them were born here or moved here at a young age as their parents were looking for work. There are a number of young player who have been 'poached' from elsewhere, granted, but not as many as the sour grapes contingent would have us believe.
it's a well worked try, but if it takes 26 phases I wouldn't call it fast ball
you dont know what fast ball means then, has nothing to do with how many phases
69
worst explanation of their method...
