I am so glad you talked about this! I WAS taking a PPI & a H2 blocker for my erosive esophagitis. I have been diagnosed with L.A.Grade B(Endoscopy 12/2023). I read enough literature from The Kidney Foundation, Mayo,Cleveland Clinic & many other reputable Hospitals about PPI's.I fought taking the PPI for months.I already have stage 2 Kidney disease ( I hover between 2 & 3A) for 6 years.I ended up taking 20 mg for awhile than for about a month, maybe 2, taking 20mg 2x's a day.I had a Basic Metabolic Panel done in May,( which I had to beg for from my PCP which she refused and a different doctor put the order in). My Creatinine & eGFR was horrible! I did had a BMP done 12/2023 & it was pretty good. In the 5 months I took PPI & H2 blocker it affected my numbers, I went OFF everything.!!! I was so mad at myself and my Doctor. ~I have had 2 BMP's since May 2024 & there has been improvement with my creatinine & my eGFR. FYI, I asked Kidney Clinic a question ( I will be seeing them in November 2024) My question was, Have you ever had patients who had AKI, CKD or Kidney failure from PPI use.The answer was yes. FROM GOOGLE: As of July 2024, 18,668 people in the U.S. have filed lawsuits against PPI manufacturers after developing renal problems. Of these cases, 12,769 are still active as the settlement process is underway.~ Any Doctor prescribing a PPI should mandatory first put in a lab order for a BMP to determine Kidney function. But they don't. Any Patient who is taking a PPI should have blood work done periodically to gauge Kidney function. Most doctors tell you it takes a year for Kidney damage but that is not the case for some. So I want to thank you for discussing this topic. Have a great day.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and research. I am so glad to hear that your changes have really made a difference in your health. This is why I wanted to make this video, to encourage everyone to ask questions and to be informed. 😀

Such an important point that medications can be necessary for health, but can also cause new, unintended problems in other parts of the body. Nice video.

This was a valuable video. A reminder that we have to talk with all the medical professionals we encounter to learn what we need to know to help them help us. A few months back I almost had a surgery cancelled because recent labs showed an elevated potassium levels. It was an easy fix but required touching base with my nephrologist and getting back in touch with the anaesthesiologist. Then I went for a ct with contrast and learned that there is a minimum gfr level for doing scans with contrast. I took my poor little kidneys for granted for the first 5-6 decades of my life because they just sat there quietly working without complaint. There's an awful lot to know about keeping our kidneys healthy and happy.

So true! We do our best to know everything about our patients but always want patients to feel comfortable to advocate for themselves!

So...why arent medication producers and doctors being held accountable?

knowledge is power - thanks - i stopped taking NSAIDs about 2 years ago because of my BP. I was taking them for a knee injury, but my DR. said i would be sorry if i kept using them. ( I knew there was chocolate in that pantry somewhere.) 😁😋

I take Farxgia for CKD. Farxiga has increased my GFR from 25 to over 50, decreased my Creatinine and BUN to normal levels, and decreased my A1C from 6 to 5.3.

I think the "water pill" hurt kidneys. My bladder doesn't have pain, but it does make my bladder ache!

Had a stomach ulcer, didnt know and was taking nsaid (ibuprofen) for the pain and would feel okay until uncomfortable nausea and bleeding occured. May possibly need ppi when go back to gi but would rather try dieting to cure first because syptoms are hit or miss nowadays. Fiber rich meals help a good bit.

I think that sounds great. Definitely try making a few tweaks to your diet and see. I am glad that fiber is helping as well. Take care and thanks so much for commenting.

I know the doc hears this a lot, but I wish I had a physician like him in Chicago! I'm pretty much sure I have CKD, but have yet to be diagnosed. I also fear it is late stage from everything I've seen. I'm just so fearful to even make the appointment. Also, I don't know if this is unethical, but it would be helpful if we could get doctor recommendations for various areas of the country. But, I'm sure the doctor doesn't know that many doctors. Lol.

My Dr kidneys waiting for me to become sick so I can be on dialysis but I wasn't asking for dialysis because I still fighting and finding something without getting allergic reaction and improve my kidneys function.
