      I feel like this team (whom I love deeply) is that team we ALL root for in the movie. The one that breaks the mold, “shouldn’t” win; with the zany coach all teary eyed, and the picks people could quite believe (looking Manu’s way) and going for it in 4th and it NOT working, but doing it again anyway! And everybody’s loosing their mind.
      We are watching a once in a lifetime sorta thing here. It’s not just that they are going to win a Super Bowl and blow everyone’s minds, it’s how they’re gonna do it. With fucking heart❤
      When they make a movie about this team, it’s gonna be amazing.

      @@kingtony3420 fair point. NFL rosters are way bigger but you still make an interesting point.
      The Pistons weren’t superstars, but each player on that starting five had a superpower and when they played together they were unbeatable.
      Sheed was the best help side defender in the league and instantly made them a force, Ben was the best rebounder in the league bar none, Tayshaun was the best defender, Rip had the best mid range game in the league, and Chauncey was the most clutch dude at the end of big games when huge shots were needed.
      They leaned on their strengths and played for each other to produce the world’s only known five game sweep.

    67 year old fan here. The "Goffense" has a fundamental element of misdirection as a built in component for OC Ben Johnson. They actually run that interior fake blocker who slips underneath as a receiver for TEs, WRs, RBs and tackle eligibles. 👀 I make the distinction because they will run that same play with pretty mich anyone, as its the same forrmation that scored a TD for Brock Wright vs the Jets in '😢22. BJ gives you a lot of eye candy to look at, and something later but different out of rhe same formation. Their bunch formation is deadly because they will run or throw out of the same formation! This offense scored 31 vs Tampa, then another 31 vs 49ers. One was a loss, the other was a win. Its' an offense designed to score pts in rhe modern NFL. If they really have fixed their secondary, then this team becomes very hard to beat. Also, to your point abiut Sewell-notice the physicality and edge with which he and the entire offense play. Offensively, they play a unique violent form of football. The motto is "No block-No rock!" , which is why you get the kind of blocking downfield that you pointed out. Great job and detail oriented breakdown. 🎙👍🏾Nice video editing as well! 🎬AND YES, THAT WAS TOTALLY A FACE MASK!!💯👀🙄🤣👍🏾👍🏾

      @@AlexandtheNFL The Baltimore game, while bad for the rest of the team, was an eye opening game for Gibbs. David Montgomery was out with and injury and while the team was down big it gave him an opportunity to get into a flow in the game without being subbed out for Montgomery's usual touches. The next game against LV was Gibbs breakout game and from them on just BALLED OUT.

    That first pass to Amon Ra was a slant pass. What I like about Ben Johnson is that he makes simple plays tough for the defense to recognize and react to. He reminds me of Mike Martz, the longtime Rams Coach. The play by Sam LaPorta on clip 11 is called a pull, TE's and DL's will both do it on certain plays. #OnePride

  • @johnlawson1167

    So about the whole people hating. drafting a RB too early thing:
    It comes down to people putting the cart before the horse.
    Basically every team is restrained to a 53 man roster and a cap of how much they can pay.
    So the goal is to get as much talent as you can, as cheaply as possible so you can afford more good players.
    Players drafted automatically get put on cheap contracts under team control that cant be altered for the first 3 years.
    And so there is a conception that its better to draft positions that would normally cost the team alot more.
    But in realitly, and this is what messes fans up, the draft is a crapshoot...
    Nobody is 100% going to make it. So its far better to draft based on talent and likelyhood of making an impact rather than restricting your team to drafting specific positions.
    Very few people watch enough college football tape to tell the difference between prospects, so when the only thing they know about a prospect is their position and a 2min highlight reel, they care alot more about position than they should.

      Agree with Alexanderr. Great breakdown. Wanted to add the high level name call of blocking for the running game. This is a duo concept trying to stress the front side LB. Lions also run a lot of power, dart (with Sewell pulling), and some zone blocking and counter techniques thrown in. They really try to throw a lot of concepts at the defense unlike a Dolphins or 49ers scheme that is going to perfect inside/outside zone.
      The Weekly Sprial website has a good overview of different run concepts and their naming convention that may be helpful.

    if you wanna see some awesome blocking aside from this game, watch the lions vs the rams. how they dealt with aaron donald was something special. something also quite cool to notice about the lions offense is the timing with the receivers, when they break their routes its almost all at the same time, its very hard to read what the play is until it happens.

    Try to find some of "Baldy's Breakdowns" breaking down the Lions blocking schemes. Watch how well coached the Lion's right ends are in the blocking game. Laporta and Brock Wright pulling in tandem are formidable. It's one reason why the Lion's jumped to resign Wright in free agency.

  • @tal7342

    23:02 I believe is a counter pull. Cause the Linebackers read in a triangle. Both Guards to the RB. So when you use a false pull or counter pull it’s using their Defensive Keys against them. The Lions scheme really really well using the keys

  • @blatty2646
    @blatty2646 4 місяці тому

    The play at 3:55 is commonly called a zone play. Front side Guard and the Center are combo blocking up to the LB. They then makes the decision on who is blocking the LB by where the LB flows to. If he over pursues and flows over the time, the center would take the block on the down lineman and the guard would go to the LB. If the LB under pursues like he did on this play, the center makes the block and the guard stays. The Lions have an extremely diverse run game. Lots of pulls, traps, zone blocking and man schemes. This play is a great example of a well blocked zone scheme

    The one thing you have to know is that they can't block that early because it's considered a pass play. It would be penalized as illegal blocking downfield and the play would be nullified. They have to wait until the pad is out of the QBs hand before the OLs can go upfield. The runner is then on his own except for maybe the WOs blocking.

    Funny story about the 75 yd TD run by Montgomery that you breakdown at 16:40 - On his podcast, Amon-Ra St. Brown mentioned that they'd never run that particular run play out of that formation. There was actually a mistake in the play call, so most of the O-line/receivers were ad libbing in real time to figure out blocking assignments. Hats-off to the Lions offense for figuring that out on the fly. My favorite part of that play is Jameson Williams's little "c'mon! follow me!" wave to Montgomery Jamo passes him to setup the final block to ensure the TD. 😂

    Well done brother!! I've been a Lion's fan almost a half century now, and I've been waiting for this my whole life. It's so refreshing to see them relevant, and I absolutely love everything about this team, from the management, ownership, and coaching, all the wall down to each and every player on the team. Buckle up, cuz I think the next 5+ years are going to be one helluva ride.

      @AlexVenuse Keep doing what you're doing, brother. Love it. I played football from pee-wee, thru high school, Div. 1 college, semi-pro, up to professional in Europe for 6 years, and I'd rather watch the way you break down a game tape, then most of these "X's and O's" type of breakdowns. It's more relatable for anyone whether they played or not. One thing I wanted to point out when you were talking about Jameson William's speed (which I believe the NFL still doesn't know just how fast that kid is). On the screen play you broke down, maybe 5 or 6 clips in, look how far down the field he is, in a matter of 2-3 seconds. I mean, he's like 30-40 yards down field before Gibbs catches the ball, getting ready to run that screen play. I truly believe this will be a breakout season for him. I bet you he's gonna be a 1,100-1,400 yard receiver, with 8-12 tds. I think Gibbs could have 2k all-purpose yards, with 12-15 tds. He'll also lead the league in 20+ yard plays. LaPorta will have similar stats this year with another 10+ tds, and Goff will lead the league in passing yards, tds, and QBR. You can keep this post, and we'll look back at it in February. Best of luck with everything, and keep doing what you're doing. Cheers mate!

      I appreciate this so much man. I have tried these videos in the past and stopped recording them because I’d beat myself up for not knowing the exact terminology of a particular thing within a play. Thought to produce a video like this I had to have all the answers, so your feedback is very much appreciated and encouraging.
      I also think you guys are in for a mega year this year. Gibbs was one of my favourite players to watch last year and I don’t doubt it’ll be the same this year. Would love to see this for Jameson too!

    @23:45 the pulling guard/TE across the offensive line blocking the opposite direction is called a counter scheme. The guys blocking left are getting angles to seal their assignments off and the two guys pulling would be lead blockers

    My personal pet peeve: the claim that there is zero pressure on the QB. Of course, there is. ... When a D rushes three and drops everyone else into coverage, the D intends to disrupt the pass play with coverage, NOT a pressure.

    • @AlexandtheNFL
      @AlexandtheNFL  4 місяці тому +2

      That is completely fair. I should say ‘clean pocket’ rather than no pressure. Totally get what you mean

    • @TheAlienAbides
      @TheAlienAbides 4 місяці тому +1

      Seriously?? It's relative isn't it? One can claim no pressure if there is in fact a clean pocket compared to a blitzing defense with defenders behind the line of scrimmage. I say continue to say it, most of us are stable enough to not get upset about a properly used term.

    • @LDVTennis
      @LDVTennis 4 місяці тому

      @@TheAlienAbides It is NOT relative. The "no pressure claim" is often used to discredit what the QB does from a clean pocket. Commentators frequently say this about about Goff because they wrongly assume that every clean pocket must mean that Goff has it easy and is just a game manager. The truth is that both sacks and clean pockets are a QB stat. The better QB's control the pressure with their time to throw. Goff's time to throw last year was 2.52 seconds on average. On 46% of dropbacks, it was 1.88s. All conventional dropbacks take 2.5s to execute. 2.5s is the threshold for a pass block win. What that means is that Goff is as much a part of the pass pro as the linemen. Therefore, saying that Goff has a clean pocket is meaningless. It's not defined by its opposite a blitz/pressure. It's defined by the QB's time to throw. All you have managed to demonstrate is that you don't have a "stable" understanding of the concept of a clean pocket.

      @@LDVTennisAdding to what you said, the WR running a crisp, perfect route and getting open to the space they need to be while beating the defense, and the play call setting the stage to let the offense succeed are also critical parts of passing game success. It truly is a team sport.

    I've never seen a tackle, live or on tape, who can move like Sewell. It's play after play after play, too. Honestly, if you watch enough tape you see they use him as an offensive weapon and circle a lot around him. Sewell's second-level blocking is a thing of destructive path-clearing beauty

    Gibbs was good between the tackles at GT before he transferred to Alabama.
    Gibbs is very good.
    But Montgomery is pretty good, too, and you don't want to burn out a great back like Gibbs. They're a great 1-2 punch. Montgomery goes in to pummel the defense and soften them up, and Gibbs comes in and blows by everybody.
