  • Looking for the best hikes near Chicago? It can be tough to find if you like getting outside if you live around the Chicago area. Luckily there are places to go if you like hiking near Chicago. One of my favorite places to go hiking near Chicago is located on the Hoffman Estates/Elgin boarder. The paved path is great for riding your bike or going for a run...but it can get busy on nice days. If you are looking for more seclusion find some of the dirt trails and go wander the woods.
I've always called this area "Poplar Creek Forest Preserve" but it's really a series of different preserves all joined together. The main paved trial is called Poplar Creek Trail.
This entire area is really called Arthur Janura Forest Preserve! I've been coming here for over 20 years and have been calling it the wrong name! This is one of the best hikes near Chicago because of the variety of landscapes and different trail options.
Here is a link to the entire area.

If you are ever able to get farther south, you definitely should try to visit Shawnee. I know it's a good probably 5-6 hour drive from the Chicagoland area. It's 4 hours for me from Bloomington. But anywhere you go in Shawnee is going to be great. Can't go wrong with any destination in Shawnee you choose. Only down side, just like in northern Illinois can be crowds. Subbed.

I’ve been and it’s great! I’d love to go back and make a video...maybe in the fall. Thx for commenting!

If you're willing to drive a few hours west, it's hard to beat White Pines Forest State Park in Mount Morris, IL. Great trails and camping just watch out if you're a light sleeper. There's an hourly train that runs most of the night with a loud horn.

Thanks for pointing this park out! I looked it up and did some research...it’s definitely on my list to go this year. Maybe a spring trip. Thanks again.

It is illegal to operate a drone from within any Cook county forest preserve. You can fly a drone over a forest preserve if you are standing outside of it.
Anyway, I agree Poplar Creek trail is a good trail. The nearby Paul Douglas Preserve is also not bad. Of course, there is also Busse Woods trail nearby as well.

What’s the reason they don’t allow drones on trails?
