My 9-year-old son and I were sitting next to Matt Guitar Murphy on a plane from Miami to New York last month. He told us he was in the movie "Blues Brothers", but I didn't know until I googled him, that he was so well known. He is a really nice guy.
i like this version a lot; a slower tempo version w/ M.Slim, W.Dixon & B. Stepney was on my irst blues record purchase (40 years ago), BLUES JAM, still one of my all time favorite albums (JOYS 177)
@drboogie8 your guess is right, I happen to have this recording on a special dvd an the credits for this recording are the following: Matt's Guitar Boogie (1963) Memphis Slim: Piano Matt "Guitar" Murphy: Guitar Bill Stepney: Drums Regards :)
I think he was from Chicago. I heard him in the early '70's & he blew everyone away. There was an even better clip that was on youtube but was taken off for estate reasons.
I hate to correct you SunnyRhoades9 but the song is in the Key of G. He's using blues scales and some chromatic approaches. Check it out with your guitar and hear the chords are G-C-D7 or all 7ths/9th chords can be played as well.
That's Gibson ES 345 for sure. You can tell it's Gibson because Epi at this time wouldn't have standard PAF humbuckers but those mini humbuckers or p90s. Dot have dot position marks on fretboard thus the name Dot. This one got those fancy ones separated in middle, that means it's 345, more expensive version of 335. I hope this helps, cheers!
It's funny to see that even at this time, they made several takes. Note that at 1'38 the microphone on the drums is not at the same place that on the top view (1'47)...
@geobluesman Matt's brother Floyd was a pretty good player in his own right, check out some of Little Junior Parker's early Sun(the original 'Mystery Train) and Duke recordings

I watched this twice just to make sure... Did you notice, kids? NO BASS. It was all the piano player's left hand... and on acoustic yet. Awesome.
Smooooth man, he doesn't let up !..Thank you for posting this..
got to open for him at the Frontier Room in Athens Ohio [O.U.] in 1982with the Premium Slugs Band...right after his success with the Blues Brothers...
Wow, this guy rocks.
This is awesome!
I wish there was a recording of this without the guitar. It would have been an awesome piano boogie.

Absolutely awesome. I'm going to get the At the Gate of Horn CD.
Fantastic clip of pure talent!
Never heard of him as many time as B.B. King and many others which clearly means that He is underrated compared to rest of them.
It's a Gibson ES-345. Matt is a very underrated player...I remember seeing him at BLUES ETCETERA in Chigago -and being thoroughly impressed
oh my good,is very cooooolllll.não se faz mais gente assim neste mundo.
ele é um fabuloso guitarrista mesmo. Nunca vi alguém com uma técnica tão sublime

@bazookajoemo -saw him in Syracuse in late 70's - rocked the house! wish he'd tour more now.
Who ever he is he is bloody good!
Is it not Freddy Below? Stunning either way!
This is pretty awesome
Damn.. sooo awesome!!
Is that a gibson or an epiphone he's playing?
Looks like an ES-335, but it could be a Dot.
I think that's a gibson es 335. Can you do a lesson on this?

These were stereo guitars by default. But many were made (more sensibly) as factory-monaural.

VERY underrated guitar player.
