  • OTB Thinker. We are starting a new project. My Ridgid Oscillating belt/drum sander needs some enhancements and jigs. This is the first episode for making these improvements. Watch to see all the ideas we are going to make for this already great machine. We will be refering this machine as (Ridgid Oscillating Belt Sander) "Robs"

Thanks for sharing these ideas. They certainly show up’s improve the performance and or your enjoyment in using the tool.
I like to tinker and upgrade things too but my knowledge of electronics is limited. I’m looking forward to watching the various follow-up videos.
I think I saw Sue’s video recently. It certainly seems to get good results.
    Thanks,
    Paul in Japan

Russ, I look forward to the jigs and improvements. I also have an oscillating sander and by looking at yours I have some things I need to do. Like you I had problems clamping to the honeycomb bottom of the table. It never occurred to me to add a wooden frame around it. Unfortunately, I do not have the OTB creativity that you have, that's why I watch your videos! Thanks for posting.

Hi Russ. I've had my Ridgid since they went orange. Had to replace the power switch - seems to be a common problem.
I cursed the honey combed table for clamping until I glued blocks of wood into the cells to create a bottom surface. Your table rim is a better idea that I wish I thought of.
The oscillating occurs inside the sealed motor so not much we can do about that. Agreed that the dust collection is poor.
Heads up. 95 percent of my sanding is with the belt - seldom use the drums. You cant leave the belt sander in place for 5 or 10 years and expect it to come right off when you need the drums. Mine got seized to the motor shaft and I had a devil of time getting it off - almost wrecking the machine. Happened to me - could happen to others. Remove the belt sander couple times a year and keep the shaft oiled.

Another good video Russ! I worked at a company that had two of these sanders. They are really powerful, we did a lot of work on those sanders. I am keeping my eye on the used market - maybe some day :-) Love your modifications!

I can't believe it still works. I have used this thing a lot ( . . . A LOT :>). I imagine a used one will be hard to find. Good luck :>). Oh, and thanks for the input, Steve.

Verry interesting Russ, it looks like we may have a jointer with this tool, prob one of the cheapest avail today. The long side would make a good planer since its a bit longer. You really got my mind wondering and I went to check the ladies out as well, and I am honestly impressed. Good work.

Hey Russ, good ideas literally all around
How do you store your sanding sleeves?
Have you or someone else inserted a cutout switch in the wiring of the belt sander oscillator? Is that a solution or is the oscillator more direct?
I got a used Ridgid that doesn't have the belt sander stop. Will using meter gauges eliminate the need for that stop?
So, do you like shoulder height for the work surface? What do you think about putting the Ridgid on top of another tool (I'm think my table saw - cut and then sand.)

    • @russveinot5754
      @russveinot5754  Місяць тому

      Thanks for the compliment.
I store my sleeves in a small container, just thrown in there.
The oscillator mechanism is integrated with the spinning mechanism and can't be controlled or separated.
I haven't used the stop in years. The miter gauge works better.
I do like the height of the machine at shoulder height. I used to store the unit under the bench and get it out when needed but I found that being so light, it would move around when using so now it is bolted in place. I find on a rolling cart is best for me. I'm always shifting things around the shop all the time.
